A word from Cafe Panache
Cafe Panache, located in downtown Ramsey, NJ, has been a top-rated BYO and "culinary mecca" since it opened in 1985. For almost 30 years Chef Kevin Kohler has been tantalizing his clientele with signature dishes - House Made Filet Mignon Ravioli Truffle Butter and Crispy Roast Duckling in Port Wine Sauce. Kohler's menu changes almost daily with seasonal ingredients - producing specials like Lobster in Vanilla Sauce, Artichoke Lasagna, Panko-crusted Soft Shell Crab. Service is "seamless" in an "elegant" "newly-renovated" dining room. Rated Top Restaurant in New Jersey by Jersey Monthly Magazine.

Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious! Always consistent! Great service! Will definitely go back!"

  • "All six of us enjoyed our meals. It all started with those great rolls and went up from there."

  • "Based on this restaurant's reputation, I was so looking forward to our meal but was less than thrilled with the reality. Overall quality of food was good, but prep not wonderful. They were heavy handed with salt on a number of dishes, and i would have liked more descriptive info included in menu. Disconcerting to have to ask what everything is served with, but that's important to know. Coffee was excellent, though, and that's not always the case with other high-end places."

  • "The food was so good I almost cried. The sides that came with our entrees were not an afterthought, but complimented the main protein. The service was outstanding and friendly. The atmosphere was relaxing -- a totally enjoyable dining experience. We will be returning to try other menu items."

  • "Maybe it was just a bad night, but my wife and I - who were really looking forward to finally dining at Panache - had a bad experience. Burnt swordfish on my end and strangely prepared lobster in goopy lobster sauce on hers. Our server also seemed puzzled at the food that was served to us and encouraged us to change: I swapped my swordfish for a very lobstery dish of lobster ravioli in a heavy lobstery lobster sauce and my wife's was stripped of its goopy sauce and reserved simply: by then, as you might imagine, the thrill was gone. Complimentary dessert was mediocre. An expensively deflating dinner."

  • " I was a little disappointed in the food for the first time at Cafe Panache ( it was my sixth visit over the years). The lobster/mussell soup should take the lobster out of the name as it had not a single piece of lobster. Also, my pork chop was undercooked. I have always heard that pink pork was dangerous but trusted that Kevin the chef knew better than me and cooked it this way intentionally.... However, my girlfriend fond her duck entree absolutely delicious and everything else about the place is top notch."

  • "As a regular diner at Cafe Panache since it opened decades ago I am always astounded how Chef Kohler and the staff maintain the consistency year after year. It never gets old, and regular dinners at Cafe Panache will be one of the things we'll miss the most as we move south to Florida."

  • "My wife and I have dined at Café Panache many times. It is consistently very good with a small menu."

  • "Chef is always on top of his game. Enticing appetizers and very satisfying entrees are always changing so that the diner has a choice even when dining here repeatedly. Fresh produce and inspired recipes (well maybe not recipes) but rather, culinary skills (that's better, right Chef?) keep us coming back for more. This is a special restaurant that never fails to deliver."

  • "I have been to Cafe Panache many times and I have never come away disappointed. The service is exceptionable and the food is amazing. I went with four friends from the office and every one at the table could not stop raving about the food. I had the halibut on the menu, was a bit concerned about the wasabi, as I am not a fan of too much spice, but as advised, it was just perfect. The lamb was also ordered and was cooked just right, which can be tricky. The desserts, if you have room, are to die for! Still remains on the top of my list in Bergen County!!"

  • "Hadn't dined here in several years. The menu had great selection and interesting specials. Everything came out fresh, hot and delish. we cant wait to go back again. 5 stars!!"

  • "As always, Kevin Kohler and his staff prepared an amazing meal using wonderful fresh ingredients. We will be back soon!"

  • "Never had a bad meal - everything is fresh which is very, very important. It's nice that the menu is limited. When there are too many choices on the menu, like other restaurants, the food can't be all that fresh."

  • "Went to Cafe Panache for our 31st Anniversary and it was simply delicious!! We are lucky enough to have this restaurant in the neighborhood! We started and shared a seafood salad which was seasoned perfectly and the portion was split into 2! I had the Filet Mignon with sauteed vegetables and mashed potatoes and my husband had the homemade pasta with braised meat... Both dishes were delicious!! Cafe Panache is the kind of restaurant where you do not have to "ask" for anything! Water, bread and whatever your need, are are simply met by a very experienced wait staff, giving the patron space to enjoy it all!! I have eaten here many times and the food has always been exceptional.... You will not be disappointed!!!"

  • "We had a very Good Friday night dinner. Started with a very tasty vegetable soup and a mushroom salad. We both had the soft shell crabs which were a special that night. The crabs were very good with a slightly spicy sauce. Really enjoyed them. Only dessert we had was the lemon tart which was very good and with excellent lemon taste. All in all a very nice dinner. Recommended"

  • "Cafe Panache remains as a staple of the finer dining restaurants we regularly patronize. They make some of the best duck and short ribs dishes (preparation changes every so often, but they are uniformly stellar). Break out that fine bottle of wine you have been saving for a special occasion. "

  • "The food and service was good; however, not outstanding. We would not return again. The soup was non-descript and muddy (what was it?). Swordfish and salmon were good, but nothing to write home about. I did not appreciate the chef appearing in the dining room in shorts and filthy sneakers. This was a Sunday prix fix and they automatically added a 20% gratuity to the bill - really?"

  • "The food was very good. However, the service was slow due to back up in the kitchen."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. There were 6 of us and we had everything from oysters to the filet mignon raviolis. The service was terrific. 5 stars all the way. "

  • "I have not been to cafe panache in 1 year. I had cold seafood salad as an appetizer. It had no flavor and the cucumbers were soggy as if it was prepared the day before. The portion on all if our meals were smaller than they were in the past. We all felt that the food was not what it used to be. "

  • "We went here for our 15th anniversary and booked the reservations on OpenTable. The server seemed unhappy, the delivery of our dishes were very long in between and not even a "happy anniversary" out of anyone. We had been here about 10 years ago and weren't thrilled with it then either; we thought we should give it another shot. Sorry we spent our anniversary here and we won't be back."

  • "We have been coming to CP for over 25 years and every time we come we say the same thing...what a great dinner! We usually try to order something we haven't had before and no matter what it is, one of their specials or part of the regular menu, the food always tastes great. If you want a great meal and enjoy bringing your own bottle of wine, there aren't many places that you'll enjoy more than Cafe Panache."

  • "Café Panache hits a home run-superb food, highly professional service , and very comfortable and welcoming ambiance, with tables not too close together. I recommend it highly."

  • "Used to be a favorite of mine back in the day over a decade or more. Sunday dinner was limited - foie was over cooked steak felt like it was previously frozen. Boar ragu was chunky and chewy n lacked freshness. Tuna special was the best. "

  • "It was insanely good. Every bite was perfect. It got slightly noisy at the end but the food made it worth it. It truly was one the best meals I have ever had."

  • "Wonderful Wednesday night romantic dinner for our anniversary- the Asparagus soup, Lobster with Curry sauce, and Coconut cake/coconut sorbet/creme brulee were all oustanding and memorable. Service was smooth, attentive, and friendly. Highly recommended for a relaxing and rewarding upscale dining experience at a very reasonable price point. This is a BYO restaurant, which allowed us to enjoy our favorite wine with our meal. We will certainly be back. "

  • "My wife and I have made multiple visits to CP and always come away very happy and satisfied. This past Sunday we took another couple there (for professional reasons) and once again CP didn't disappoint. Our waiter, whose name regrettably I have forgotten, was terrific. Engaging, amusing but a total pro. You simply can't go wrong here."

  • "Great dinner! Thanks Cafe Panache. I casually mentioned we were going to share plates and the waiter arranged for the mains to be served separately and split. Also bought out appetizers out one at a time so we could share. Really added to the experience. Also, food was cooked and plated to perfection. Will return! "

  • "Pulled Cafe Panache off the internet after I searhed for "Best restaurant in Bergen County". Excellent food, Excellent service. Perfect night out."

  • "Panache is one of my favorite restaurants. The limited menu changes often and always involves interesting (but not outlandish) preparation of traditional standards like filet, lobster, chicken, duck, pasta or fish and I often have a tough time deciding which to order as so many sound interesting. The food quality is uniformly outstanding. Prices are high ($15 appetizer, $35 entree) but not unreasonable for the quality. BYO results in total cost being only upper moderate. Ambiance is very nice and restaurant is bright during daylight hours (which I personally don't like). Service is professional and very friendly."

  • "The food and service were outstanding .Had been their prior and had I been a bit disappointed because I had heard great things about it.Glad I went back"

  • "I have dined here several times and never has there been one misstep in food or service at all. Their bright room (windows all about) was such an uplift after the grey days of winter, and we had our requested corner table. We enjoyed our waiter and his exemplary service. The food was perfect as well, sauce and accompaniments. We dined on Bass and Salmon done to perfection. My dessert was a vanilla mouse which was something like a cloud, a delicious cloud too! All in all, for either lunch or dinner you can not go wrong dining here. One of my favorite Bergen County spots."

  • "Went to Cafe Panache for a business lunch and food was excellent, only complaint - we both wanted the Salmon on the regular menu and at 12:30PM, they had not gotten any salmon in for the day yet."

  • "A most treasured place for a fantastic meal. This restaurant never fails to impress with amazing, creative food. If you are looking for a winner every time, please come here for a meal that will be a delightful memory! The service and ambiance are all part of the experience that makes this place such a gem!"

  • "My husband and I have been going to Café Panache for the past 25 years for delicious food and impeccable service. This is a BYO restaurant which results in a 5 star dining experience in my book. On our last visit we selected the Tuna entrée and the Lamb dish, both were wonderfully prepared (nicely presented with delicious sides of vegetable and starch). I highly recommend this place for those that appreciate fine food and a beautiful ambiance."

  • "Prior experience here was much better than this visit. Dishes ordered were filet mignon, sirloin steak, and tuna. Filet and steak were delicious, but we were not overly impressed by the tuna. They sat us at the table near the front entrance, and there was a cold draft at times when the door opened. What really made the experience poor was the waitress. She was not very friendly, was rather grumpy, and she seemed really annoyed when we did not want to order dessert or coffee. She added in her own tip for a party of 5 people. I have never heard of this for a party of 5, and it does not say it anywhere on the menu either."

  • "Our Birthday Lunch at Cafe P was elegant but not stuffy. Sal was a superb waiter with a smile. The chef's creations were fresh and interesting. I like the artwork and decor, too. I would definitely go back and bring more friends."
