  • "Second time is not the charm. After a great visit,we were eager to return. Service (Natalie) was outstanding. Food was good-but was not hot when it arrived at the table. The special was halibut-pretty expensive but just an average piece of fish-dry and a little overcooked and not very hot. Cioppino was also not very hot. This is not an inexpensive dinner so we expect better. We will return (thanks to Natalie) with high expectations."

  • "Liked the ambiance but thought the food was not outstanding for as fine a restaurant we expected this to be. The vegan pasta dish was quite heavy with oil and the tomato broth of the seafood stew was a bit salty. However, my flat iron steak was cooked perfectly and the watermelon gazpacho was good too. One of our group of three friends said they would go back. The service was good without being overly intrusive. Even though the ratings I gave were favorable I would not recommend to a friend because the prices were not reflected in the quality."

  • "I've dine a number of times here and I have always been very happy with the restaurant, food, service however this particular night it lacked all those wonderful qualities. The service was extremely slow, my fish entrée was 1/3 less the size of those at my table who order the same entrée, the food was like warm & the legumes served with the enter were hard & tough, & I was not the only one with slow service I was in the restroom at 7:20 and a woman was going to the same show and still did not have her dinner."

Pleasant atmosphere, we had great service; the noise level was not loud so we were able to enjoy conversation with each other without raising our voices. The building itself has great architectural features that are not found in many restaurants today. Highly recommend Cafe Navarre for a relaxing evening with delicious food and comfortable atmosphere."

  • "I have dined at Cafe Navarre on many occasions and have mostly been pleased. However, on this most recent visit I was very disappointed in the service and the food was not quite up to their usual standards. I know it was restaurant week, but I don't feel that is an excuse for poor service and sub-par food. We were there to celebrate my niece's 16th birthday and, being a teenager, she is pretty picky about her food. In the past when I've dined with her there we've been able to get the burger, which is on the lunch menu, for dinner and have always been accommodated. On this occasion, the waitress responded with an emphatic "Absolutely not! It's restaurant week, there's just no way." I was very turned off by her reaction. The meal was just ok."

  • "We have eaten there several times and consider it one of best in area. However this last visit was a disaster. We were seated next to a foursome of which one gentleman was a salesman who talked non-stop pitching a guy across from him such that it was like he was sitting at our table. Drinks were great, the French Onion soup was excellent, but then our entrees were served before we got a salad. Both salads arrived and they were actually warm not cool/crispy. We both ordered a flank steak and it was almost raw, a bit chewy and instead of traditional sliced appearance was shriveled up and gnarly in appearance. Other than snafu with salads the waitress was wonderful. We just asked for the bill at that point but they comped it all."

  • "We have been to Cafe Navarre a number of times, but were somewhat disappointed with our recent visit. We had reservations, which they were unable to bring up when we got there. I'm assuming because they could not find our reservation, they seated us at a two top banquette near the back of the restaurant. (It was early and there were many booths and other tables available.) During our meal our server came out to dust the other end of our banquette, as well as the ledge above it, leaving us to wonder what we might be sitting in. It was downtown restaurant week, but the menu did not have anything new or seasonal on it. I guess we have come to expect much more from Cafe Navarre because previous visits have been much more satisfying."

  • "I Dine and lunch at Navarre frequently because I am local. Generally, I enjoy the experience but this was surprisingly boring food with startlingly poor service. From the wait, to the tasteless sandwich/salad and on to the old cold coffee it was all rather sad and by the end our service person....who could remember nothing we said....became laughable. It was inexpensive but in the end I could have gotten much better food and service almost anywhere."

  • "Visited specifically for one dish on the menu. When ordered at 7, was told they might be out as they had a large group before us. Waiter checked and luckily he was able to put a hold on one. He also had to check on the second menu item to see if there was any left, which there was. Ordered extra bread, which never was delivered. When explained one person was paying bill for two couples, he took checks to make into one bill. When he returned, he only had check for one couple. He was relieved when we told him the bill was incomplete."

A few more choices on the menu may have been nice but I have never had a bad meal or compromised service at this restaurant. Without a doubt the best choice in downtown South Bend to dine!"

  • "Loved having lunch here with my aunt. We used to know this place when it was a bank, and we could catch the bus home on the south side of the building. Liked the transformation very much and noted the use of the offices above for a more private dining experience. Big windows let in light during the day and "city light" at night. Food and service were fantastic. Wine list is good with the usual national wine selections. Could be updated with more regional choices (Northern California, Oregon, Washington, NY (Long Island) on a trial basis to see if customers are interested in more choices. Good bartenders; helpful hostess. We will definitely return."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our 30th anniversary and were looking for a unique spot to enjoy a nice quiet meal. We knew of Cafe Navarre, but had never been there as we don't get downtown often. Our dining experience was exceptional. I ventured out of my eating norms and tried the lamb and my wife had a mixed seafood dish. We finished our meal with cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake, and we both were quite pleased. Our food server, Jordan, was very good and helped guide us through our dinner and dessert questions. We will be back, and would recommend Cafe Navarre to anybody for any occasion."
