Diner Reviews
  • "This was my third visit to Cafe Matisse. I took a dear friend who was visiting, and we had a fabulous time. The waitstaff is always professional and attentive, but the experience is inconsistent (some particularly chatty, some a little distant, some just right). I like it when a waiter can "read" the table and adjust accordingly. But that's a small critique. Otherwise, the whole experience was just what I hoped to share with my friend. The food is inventive, beautifully curated and downright delicious. My friends described it as a little "o" in your mouth. It's BYO, so don't forget a bottle (or two) of wine to complement the courses."

  • "The size of portions was for the kid's menu. Three courses together were equal to appetizer. The service & atmosphere are good but what is the use when you eat "dinner" & go home and eat "dinner". Very overpriced. Food portions extremely small. You are paying for the "style of serving"."

  • "If you have a special occasion and want to try something different this is the place. Who would think such a find in Rutherford, NJ. Portions are small but not about size it is more about the infusion of flavors. With the grazing menu you get to choose several dishes."

  • "I've been here countless times & Cafe Matisse remains my hands down favorite restaurant! It does so for a reason as everything about it is always impeccable - food, service, atmosphere. Can't say enough good things about this place, Chef Peter, Larry, & the rest of their top-notch staff..."

  • "Amazing food and service and beautiful restaurant. It feels like u escape jersey and enter a whole new majical place. Really the decor is very unique and mystical. And the waiters are very knowledgable about the food and actually can give on point suggestions. Our favorite spot restaurant!"

  • "Great place for that special occasion. Pricey but worth it every once in a while. Food and presentation are fantastic. Service is wonderful...Adrian is very charming and attentive and will cater to your every whim...some could find it a touch overbearing at times. We had a 5pm reservation on a Saturday. Had requested the outdoor patio but was told it was booked. We didn't leave until 7pm...that patio remained completely empty the entire time which was a bit baffling and disapointing. Overall, still a great experience!"

  • "We were told it is a "grazing" menu - food portions bigger than an appetizer but samller than a dinne - WRONG! Very little food on the plate - I had the halibut and it looked like 2 little tater tots! You have to order the price fixe - $68 for 3 choices, $88 for 4 choices and $108 for 5 choices. This is a BYOB, so liquor was not part of the check! Included in 1 of these choices is dessert whether you want it or not. They will deduct $6 if you don't have a dessert. I found it to be extremely expensive with little to eat - I came home and had an English muffin and a Cup Of Noodles! Staff was very nice, but I won't go back."

  • "The food is amazing, - and my hubby is a CIA grad. Cafe Matisse chef is also owner and with a flair for creating unique food. It's a real taste delight :) And Larry is as always the gracious host. The ambiance is romantic, and the staff is friendly, fun, foodie knowledgeable, and very professional. We come here for every special occasion like birthday and anniversary. Highly recommend!!"

  • "There are many good restaurants but only a few great ones. Cafe Matisse stands among the best. Chef Peter's dishes are imaginative and unforgettable. Service is friendly and attentive. Our favorite restaurant for any occasion, but especially the special ones."

  • "Our first visit was on Friday evening to celebrate a birthday. It was great! We were seated in the garden outside at a great table in the back where we could soak in the whole atmosphere. It was still light and comfortably warm making it the perfect evening to dine al fresco. The entire staff was friendly, helpful, and witty. The menu was a 3, 4, or 5-course meal each at a fixed price. There were 14 small plates to choose from plus dessert. Everything sounded great that it was hard to choose. We were snacking on the delicious marinated olives during the short wait before our first course. The food was presented creatively and was very delicious. It was worth the money for a memorable dining experience."

  • "Loved the choices and the food we selected. The service was excellent. Minor issue, wish they would replace the dead light bulbs in the chandeliers."

  • "In the garden, the ambiance can't be beat. Every single dish was a fantastic creation. The spicy stuffed oysters were amazing, and the Mediterranean tuna was a novel take on tuna tartare, and it worked so well. Desserts were unbelievably good. I would just ask that there were a few more nut free options. But the single one available (a parfait) was excellent. Love it, as always."

  • "Have not been to Matisse in a long time. Read the Open Table reviews. The phony ones are obvious, especially the ones touting another restaurant. So lets cut to the chase about the rest of the complainers. The place is a BYO. They have no liquor license. They can only pay the bills off profit from the food. The portions are small. The prices are high. The food quality is exceptional. Don't like this, go to a NJ red sauce (gravy) joint and stuff yourselves. That said, my only complaint was the kitchen service was a little slow, especially for a Sunday night. Everything else was fine. Wish there was a place like this near where I live."

  • "I have been going to Cafe Matisse for the past several years, and it never disappoints! The food is outstanding and something that you honestly cannot get anywhere else. I also love the tasting menu, since that means I get to sample more dishes than I normally would during a meal out. Cafe Matisse is always my "go to" place for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays because it's truly special dining."

  • "The backyard garden is magical, the food is superb and the overall ambience is casual pampering. Add on the BYOB and you've got a delicious, enjoyable dinner - perfect for a special occasion or just spoiling yourself on a fantastic experience."

  • "We have been to Cafe Matisse about ten times and we are always thrilled with the food and service. The combinations of ingredients always works. The three of us had a total of 9 plates and we were all purring with delight."

  • "I've been here a number of times and the food is consistently very good and the service is attentive. The restaurant looks like a Matisse painting, and the outside garden is very pretty. You select 3-5 courses at different price points, one always being dessert. The portions are closer to appetizer rather than main dish size. They no longer offer bread with the meal (they need to correct this). I enjoy the way the chef combines different ingredients into a great tasting, harmonius dish. The food presentation is attractive. For a Bergen County restaurant, I think its one of the best. "

The combination of food is unique and delicious. There is no other restaurant even close to the level that Cafe has risen to. "

  • "we did enjoyed the tasting menu, but I wasn't aware of the small portions, which I didn't mind, but one of us should have gotten the 4 choice menu, while there other,(not a foodie), got the 3 menu and shared from the wonderful selections."

  • "Food is outstanding with artististically presented delicious gems. We tried the scallops, lamb, and tuna -all excellent. Desserts were fine, but not unusual. Service was attentive and very friendly. Ambience was low keyed with attractive decor based on Matisse theme paintings and colors. A bit pricey, but worth it."

  • "It took me 3 months to get a Saturday night reservation but it was well worth it. Both couples had the 3 course meal. The portions were small but absolutely fabulous. We each had 2 dinner selections and then dessert. Shrimp wrapped in ham and the short rib entree were great. The the desserts were outrageous. The raspberry parfait and the Banana creme pie were the best ever. The total bill was $185 a couple including a 20% tip which was a little high but the food was the best. Well worth it. Highly recommended! We will definitely be back"

  • "From the second we walked in, we were treated like fiends. The ambience is wonderful! It's warm, cozy and beautiful art to admire. The presentation of the food was spot on! And the taste - SPECTACULAR!!! I had the lobster satay, short ribs, grilled shrimp with crab risotto cake and cheesecake for dessert. Each plate was perfect! A night at Cafe Matisse is well worth the price! I'm looking forward to going back again on another special occassion!"
