Diner Reviews
  • "Food is outstanding with artististically presented delicious gems. We tried the scallops, lamb, and tuna -all excellent. Desserts were fine, but not unusual. Service was attentive and very friendly. Ambience was low keyed with attractive decor based on Matisse theme paintings and colors. A bit pricey, but worth it."

  • "We've been here six or seven times. Always an interesting taste experience, with great service and the feel of a European dinner out. On the expensive side, but worth it."

  • "Cafe Matisse is one of our favorite restaurants. The food is unique and delicious. The service if professional yet friendly. The atmosphere is playful yet sophisticated. We love sitting outside in the beautiful patio when weather permits. We use to go to Cafe Matisse for special occasions. Now, we go there to make every occasion special.."

  • "From the second we walked in, we were treated like fiends. The ambience is wonderful! It's warm, cozy and beautiful art to admire. The presentation of the food was spot on! And the taste - SPECTACULAR!!! I had the lobster satay, short ribs, grilled shrimp with crab risotto cake and cheesecake for dessert. Each plate was perfect! A night at Cafe Matisse is well worth the price! I'm looking forward to going back again on another special occassion!"

  • "It took me 3 months to get a Saturday night reservation but it was well worth it. Both couples had the 3 course meal. The portions were small but absolutely fabulous. We each had 2 dinner selections and then dessert. Shrimp wrapped in ham and the short rib entree were great. The the desserts were outrageous. The raspberry parfait and the Banana creme pie were the best ever. The total bill was $185 a couple including a 20% tip which was a little high but the food was the best. Well worth it. Highly recommended! We will definitely be back"

  • "Both he service and the food are excellent. The food presentation was only surpassed by the amazing taste combinations. The courses are not large but ample and satisfying. We savored each dish and left feeling completely satisfied. The chef is top class. All of our needs were taken care of. Elegant surroundings. Wonderful ambiance. A little noisy when full but that didn't tarnish the pleasing dining experience. Highly recommended particularly for a special occasion."

  • "Been going here for many years for special occasions and when the occasional desire for a truly great night dining arises. Cafe Matisse puts together the most amazing combinations of flavors and ingredients into each dish, leaving you wanting more and more with each course. You'll soon find yourself literally wanting to lick the plate - it's that good."

  • "Cafe Matisse is a class act. From the moment you walk in, you are in an intimate dining room surrounded by luxurious banquettes and a view of a well lit garden fountain area. There is no longer bread service but the olives made up for the carbs. We had four courses all together and were fully satisfied. Forget the naysayers talking about lack of bread service and portions. The experience all works out. Come with an open mind and full appetite. You won't be sorry: truly a four-star experience!"

  • "Seating was awful, 10 inches separating us from dinners next to us, quantity of food was embarresing for the price we paid. The wait staff was overbearing and the lack of bread and ice for our water left a lot to be desired. We would not recommend the restaurant to friends and strongly feel that Lu Nello's and Nicola's provide comparable food at greater value."

  • "Exceptional restaurant. Easily one of the best in the state. The food and service rival the finest restaurants in NYC. My wife and I done out all the time and we love this place."

  • "enjoyed our dishes, though don't come with a ravenous appetite. portions are small. dining room is small and there were several obnoxious people present. definitely ruined the experience and we were looking for the check early to get out of dodge."

  • "One issue that turns me off immediately is sitting inches away from other guests. We were so close to the couple next to us it's as if we were all in the same party. Given the prices I would expect some room and not have to whisper to my wife during dinner. The food was interesting and for the most part very good. The portion sizes were small and our waiter warned us as we asked menu item questions that they would be. Rutherford isn't Manhattan. I would suggest the owners focus on finding a larger location where more people can enjoy their unique menu and fine service."

  • "Inventive menu and creative dishes. However, very small portions and somewhat over elaborate sauces and combinations of foods. Not for purists."

  • "The food service and ambiance always make a dinner at Cafe Matisse a special night. The new week night a la carte menu was a surprising change that worked out very nicely. We've been coming here for special occasions for many years and have never been dissappointed"

  • "My wife and I were pleasantly suprised to find this true gem of a high end restaurant right in our backyard. We went for our Valentine's first date anniversary and our fifteenth anniversary of being together and could not have been happier with the pampering service and wonderfly eclectic and delicious menu options. We wished we had found it sooner and now have an ace in the hole for getting away from it all together while still not being far from home. Great people and incredible food! Cant wait to go back again!"

  • "The food was deliouse we ordered a few dishes everything was amazing ! The service was good very friendly. The place is cute and intamite. I can't wait to go back in summer to sit outside. The only negative is it is small potions but it is French food and the flavors of everything make up for it. I will definitely be back."

  • "Lovely environment, small but romantic, creative cuisine, pricey ($68 for 3 course tasting menu), noisy and somewhat crowded. the owner was very attentive and gracious. Likewise, the wait staff was very friendly and helpful. Great for special occasions and if you want to impress. BYOB. Would definitely go back."

  • "First and last time for Cafe Matisse for us. Recently went on a Saturday night hoping for a nice meal based of the other reviews. However, we were completely disappointed with the tastes of the savory courses and dessert. There was absolutely no balance to the favors. Had a hard time eating each dish. Very disappointed with the main attraction of any restaurant, the FOOD. The one positive I can say about Cafe Matisse was the beautiful ambiance of the dinner room and decorations outside. To finish the night off, we thought Cafe Matisse was extremely over priced for the quality of product that they are producing ($170 for 2 people). We will definitely not be going back and would not recommend it to anyone."

  • "I have been to Cafe Matisse several times over the years, it is not local for me otherwise I'd be there all the time! The food is always outstanding, the service isn't stuffy, the atmosphere is intimate . . we were there last weekend and the view of the garden out back covered in snow with the trees, lights and ornaments was stunning. I always feel like I am eating a fabulous meal in a jewelbox of a space, love it!!"

  • "If you have dietary preferences or restrictions, it is best to call ahead to confirm the menu selections. For instance, on a recent Sunday evening, only one seafood selection was offered among the second courses and it contained meat. Those with dairy restrictions may have difficulty, also. Aside from that, the food at Café Matisse lives up to its reputation: creative and flavorful with high quality ingredients. Note: bread was not served with the a la carte menu."

  • "The Sunday menu at Matisse was like a gourmet tapas. A great variety of offerings , each prepared and presented like jewel made to be consumed. Prices are reasonable to get 2 of each and share . Don't miss any of the great presentations."

  • "Great spot for a special occassion. Food was beyong excellent. Service was perfect. Went with another couple and we had the best time. The hummus appy was great as was the swordfish. Crab cakes were outstanding. Looking forward to going back."

  • "Went to Cafe Matisse for our tenth anniversary dinner. We both had the 4 course tasting menu (there is no a la carte on the weekend). The staff was energetic, funny, and professional. The food was spot-on. Creative, delicious, extremely satisfying. One of the best meals we ever had - if not THE best. Highly recommended!"

  • "This restaurant will not disappoint no matter what you order! Quite possibly some of the best food I've ever had. I recommend the crab cake and burger Matisse- both incredible! Finish with the hazelnut latte and you'll be in heaven!"

  • "Cafe Matisse is very eye appealing and the service was adequate. The portions are tasty & very smal ... And not cheap!! Went on a Sunday and had the " smal plate" menue." That is all that is offered on Sundays. Know that the first course and second course are the same size. The kitchen decided to switch our course choices without asking. Not sure why. Having said all this we will go back to eat in their garden area. Very very nice looking. I've had enough food to eat but you big eaters..... Have a snack first."
