Diner Reviews
  • "Charming little cafe. Friendly waiter, fantastic food, reasonable prices. The decor and music make you think you are in Paris."

  • "Cafe Massilia is a neighborhood gem. The menu offers authentic French cuisine that is expertly prepared. Once you walk through the door you are transported France."

  • "Our meal was exquisitly prepared. Not a hitch in the meal. We did the fixed price 3 course dinner and weren't disappointed. We ordered the French Onion soup for our starter. It arrived piping hot with ooey gooey cheese floating on the baguette. It is honestly the best soup of its kind in the city, perfect balance of sweet from the onion, acid from the wine and just the right amount of thyme herbaciousness. For the Main she had a salmon fillet in a wine reduction sauce with fried potatoe and garlic sauteed green beens. Not a complaint. I had the peppered beef fillet with a peppercorn/shallot cream sauce that was just the best thing I've had in ages. Same sides were included. Dessert and wine came to $84 with tip."

  • "Indulgent staff. Small but varied menu. Just the right amount of attention. Especially terrific for weekend brunch and a nice walk afterward. In the middle of Old Town Monrovia."

  • "Special Menu for Valentine's Day, which I usually avoid. In this case the menu was good, love the intimate atmosphere. Our server had NO wine experience but tried."

  • "Masilla only has a dozen tables so reservations for dinner are a must. Owner makes you feel special. Limited wine list with very reasonable prices. Desserts are wonderful. Main courses are just average last visit."

  • "Lack of professionalism. Does not honor reservation."

  • "I've dined at Café Massilia a few times and the food is good and the staff delightful. However, this time they were out of crepes at 9:30 on a Sunday morning. Our waiter was very nice and apologetic. I think perhaps they were a little understaffed that morning. I'll go back and try the crepes another time. I had the eggs benedict and they were deliciously perfect."

  • "Well presented plates, tastes of northern France and congenial staff. The facility is small with a table or two on the sidewalk."

  • "Rack if lamb was dry. Over done. Creme brûlée was cold. Tasted like it was made a few days earlier and placed in the fridge. Overpriced for the quality of food."

  • "We had the fixed price dinner that included appetizer, entreé and dessert because the price was very reasonable. The French onion soup was lightly flavored and the pâté was delicate to the taste. Our meals of the poisson du jour and pate fruit de mer were delicious and cooked perfectly. The creme brûlée was a tad sweet and the profiteroles were light and refreshing. We were seated and served by Phillippe himself who made us feel so very welcome. He was attentive but not overly bearing and made interesting conversation with us. I want to return on a Thursday when the special of the day is boeuf bourguignon."

  • "We enjoyed Christmas dinner at Cafe Massilia. The host/owner was charming. The ling cod with espelette sauce was divine. Thanks and Merry Christmas for a lovely evening."

  • "This will be the last time we come. Crept tasted like sticky paper. Latte was not as good as that of starbugs."

  • "Made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner at Cafe Massilia based on reviews and we had a great experience... It's a lovely place, very casual and cozy, and the food was excellent. The prix fixe menu included appetizers, entrees and dessert. Our party sampled the winter salad, pumpkin soup w/ creme fraische, and escargot; all were excellent. For entrees, we had the prime rib and turkey roulade. Both were excellent, and the roulade was probably the best turkey dish I've ever had. We all had the raspberry creme brûlée of dessert; really exceptional. They featured a Cote de Gascogne (?) red wine at $15 a bottle, a fine accompaniment at a good price. We plan to return the next time we're in the LA area to try Care Masillia for brunch."

  • "Went to nearby Krikorian theater, 70' screen the best! Saw this French cafe on Open Table. Excellent little spot. Loved it and enjoy Monrovia every time we go. Friendly place, good food, couldn't be better."

  • "This tiny Provençal bistro in Monrovia is a real hidden gem. Tucked away on a side street, it cannot have more than 25 tables, including the two outside but it is utterly charming.. The wine list is extraordinary.. The standard was a turkey roulade stuffed with a spinach filling. The prime rib was stellar, as was the grilled salmon. Desserts were a delicious pumpkin plum pie, a dense semi-sweet chocolate pie and a fabulous raspberry creme brûlée. Portions were ample--the desserts were more than enough for sharing. Service was delightful and swift. All in all, this is a jewel of a restaurant and we all cannot wait to ret"

  • "This small French bistro was dropped from the Parisian skies onto a small side street in the lovely burg of old Monrovia. The owners do not seem to promote the restaurant so we were surprised to find it. If they did promote it, guests would line up around the corner. The menu is just so French and the owners are just so French and charming, and everything that came out of the kitchen was fresh, delicious amazingly flavorful. We cannot wait to go back and become regulars of this outstanding restaurant that we were so lucky to find!"

  • "Café Massilia offers excellent food, service and ambience in a cozy setting just off Myrtle Ave in Monrovia. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The menu has a nice variety of choices and the food is always delicious. We highly recommended the "bottomless" mimosas for brunch."

  • "Cafe Massilia is our favourite neighbourhood restaurant. This visit was specifically for the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau, and it did not disappoint! The wine was the perfect complement to our brunch: I ordered the Oeufs Scandinave with the salad, and my accomplice had the Oeufs Benedicte with the breakfast potatoes. These were some of the best poached eggs we have ever had. They were perfect! We completed our meal with double espressos and shared the strawberry and oranges crepes. They were light, delicate and simply terrific! Merci Phillipe!"

  • "Wonderful resto, lovely owner, caring waitstaff! Onion soup was superb! Prices were incredibly reasonable!"

  • "This is our second visit. It has slightly different decor after renovation though no major change noted. The dinner menus is slightly different from the brunch menu we had last time. We had lamb rack and rabbit that were cooked perfectly. Dessert is not quite worth mentioning unfortunately. It is a relatively inexpensive french restaurant."

  • "It took them 20 mins. to take our order. They said everyone came at the same time. But, we had a reservation. The food wasn't worth the money. They charged me $2.95 for one simple scoop of ice cream. I ordered the special of the day and they were out, by 6:45! I expected authentic French and I feel like it wasn't very authentic."
