  • "Cafe Malta was highly recommended by a friend. As an appetizer I ordered the lamb stuffed squid that was the special . Taste and quality poor. Took a long time to come out and when it did it was cold. My husband ordered the chicken which was served raw in th middle. The waitress finally came by and my husband told her the chicken was not cooked. She said sorry took our plates and came back with desert menus. We were taken back that she did not offer to bring another chicken plate or something else so we just asked for the check. To top it off she charged us for the raw chicken that my husband did not eat. We told her we would not be paying for that plate. Owner came over and apologized and made adjustment. Won't go back."

  • "This place always has good food. The biggest problem is the ticket time. When my Wife and I are the only ones in the restaurant and they still have a 35 minute ticket time there is a problem. We love this place for the quality of the food and the prices are great. But when we come in at 11:00 AM and are the only guests in the restaurant and we order a Medium Rare Malta Burger and the Linguini and it talks 35 minutes there is a problem. (Not to mention) the burger was "well done" & the frits were half cooked at best. Great food, Great atmosphere. But if your have a short lunch this is not the place for you. My only question is what happens when they have several guest in at one time? 1 hour ticket time?? We will probably go back."

  • "not my cup of tea. strange fogettable food. very salty. loud. This was my 3rd and final time to try this restaurant. I really want to like it because I know the owner."

  • "Cafe Malta cooks excellent Mediterranean dishes from all over the Mediterranean region at affordable prices. I especially like their creative Tour de Forks where they focus on a four course meal from one specific region or city on the Mediterranean sea."

  • "We were not expecting much when we drove up-it is in a very non-distinct shopping center. LOVED the Hummus! It tasted like it was fresh ground just before it came to our table. The Eggs Malta were wonderful with crispy pancetta and a hearty biscuit. My daughter had the Gnocci and the cream garlic sauce was divine. We will be back."

  • "This neighborhood gem never disappoints. My husband and I have been patrons for quite some time and have brought a number of couples with us. Each one has gone back on their own because the food and service are always great and the menu is appealing. The wine prices are also reasonable, as is the food. I only wish it was closer to me. We will return!"

  • "Very good experience at Cafe Malta. Reserved table was ready on time despite the place being packed. It is vibrant and fun. Excellent, knowlegable waiter who was able to recommend off menu items to accomodate my daughter's finicky palate. The food was good, but not exceptional. With a bit of tweeking on the menu, they could really do well. I'll be back (sans kiddos) for date night or with friends when we can hang out longer and try some other menu items."

  • "My husband and I have been choosing one restaurant per month to try in Austin; kids are getting older, so husband and I are taking turns choosing a place to dine. A family member lives down the street from Cafe Malta and recommended the charming place. Therefore, it was my pick this month, we went and loved the restaurant......we'll definitely return....."

  • "We had an 08:00 pm reservation. We were finally seated about 08:40. They were out of several of the dishes we wanted by the time we were able to order. The food we were able to get was not the best--salad was a bit limp, and the bread for the appetizer was burnt. It was a busy Friday night. Maybe they were off their best effort. Be a while before we go back."

  • "Everything about the experience was excellent. We had a reservation and a table was set for us. From beginning to end, we enjoyed our meal, especially the frilled peaches at the end. But then the waiter told us another party had a reservation and we had to leave. We had only finished paying a few minutes earlier! We're not the type to linger for an unusual amount of time. Perhaps the restaurant will want to space out their reservations a bit more to make this a perfect place to dine."

  • "My wife and I have been to Café Malta 3 times: once for lunch, and twice at the cafe's First Tuesday Tours de Fork, in which the theme of the dinner is a country or area within the Mediterranean region. The lunch was delicious, though not exceptional. But the Tours de Fork WERE exceptional. The Tours take the form of a $25 prix-fixe menu of 2 choices for each of the first 3 courses, plus a dessert. The focus on a country or area enables the chef to choose items that characterize the area but are not necessarily familiar to Americans. So far we've thoroughly enjoyed all 14 menu items at our 2 Tours. We plan to be regular First Tuesday diners from now on. The wines are mostly from the Mediterannean region; we've liked all our choices."

  • "I had heard great things about Café Malta and I was excited to finally try it myself. So I was really disappointed when the food was just so so. I ordered the appetizer of the day which was sausage stuffed mushrooms and they were dry and just not special in any way. I then had the Halibut served on a bed of something with the texture of watery hummus - grainy and runny at the same time. The fish was cooked perfectly, but the texture of the stuff it was served on was yuck and the presentation was off putting. There was apple and Prosciutto in the mush which gave it some flavor but really it was the color of clay. My dessert mousse with candied pecans was delightful. Service was fine, noise level got pretty loud, just not special."

  • "Café Malta is a hidden gem on William Cannon in SW Austin. The nightly specials are excellent; get there early before they're all gone! I had an exquisite swordfish dish with polenta and my friend had another fish dish that was also very tasty. Nice by the glass wine selection. Reasonable prices for such quality food."

  • "I usually find the food to be creative and very enjoyable. However, on my recent visit for dinner, the porcini pasta was so salty that I could only eat a little."

  • "Second time I've been. The first time was later (9:00 p.m.) and on a Tuesday and, as a result, the ambiance was very nice. This time, however (Friday 8:00 p.m.) it was so noisy that my date and I were yelling at each other. Not only that, but the patrons on either side of us were doing the same, to the point that we overheard their entire conversation, and they ours. It looked like both couplers were attempting a romantic dinner date, as were we, so the atmosphere left a lot to be desired in that regard. Were I supreme ruler of Malta, I'd work like hell to get some stuff in there to deaden the sound. I liked the food very much but I doubt I will return because of the deafening roar."

  • "We took my parents to Cafe Malta for the Tour de Forks and had a wonderful time! I had never been to one of their tours, and our "trip" to Turkey did not disappoint. The food was perfect, as always. My only criticism would be that it was so loud by the time we left, we could hardly hear each other. My dad, who is losing his hearing, wasn't able to talk much toward the end because he couldn't hear the conversation. Otherwise, it was a lovely evening!"

  • "Our dinner was great , as it always is at Cafe Malta. WE go regularly because the menu is always fantastic. It is noisy but we put up with the din, and enjoy our din-din."

  • "We arrived around 8:00 and it was so loud, we could barely hear each other. Since we stayed until abut 9:30, it was much emptier and very pleasant. The food and service were wonderful! I hope they will invest in some sound attenuation measures."

  • "My husband and I have visited Cafe Malta twice. The 1st time I ordered the Chicken Pot Pie. It was just OK & I wouldn't order it again. My husband ordered the special, a fish dish & it was amazing. On our 2nd visit , I ordered the Filete Andaluza. The fish was so tough, had to cut it with a knife & the Risotto was bland and tasteless. My husband ordered the Bistro steak which had a good flavor but was very stringy. When the waiter asked how we liked our meals (he could see I hadn't eaten but a few bites) We told him the fish was tough and his response was simply that it was probably a kitchen error. When we got the bill, we were charged full price. On a positive note: the chocolate cayenne creme brule was amazing."

  • "We (my family and friends) love Cafe Malta from the 1st time we dined there. The specialty is their friendly courteous staff, I can recommend this place to anyone, you cannot be disappointed. The food is always good. My family celebrated their 35th anniversary and it was truly made "special"..."

  • "Not just another strip mall hole-in-the-wall. Seasonal menus, well considered selections, fresh ingredients. (They don't even have a freezer.)"

  • "This is the 2nd time we ordered the Paella: a repeat treat! The seafood is cooked to retain the correct texture and flavor (I usually avoid paella due to the fact that some or all of the seafood is traditionally over-cooked) and the infusion of real bomba rice makes this selection stellar. Also ordered was the Fettucini Porcini, still another god-like dish combining the pairing of pasta and a pesto of porcini and pistachios (wow, the 4 Ps). The Maltese Chicken also alighted on our table, another paean to our clucking friend...this proves that chicken really can be prepared to exude juiciness and chickeny-harmony. Cafe Malta is truly a gustatory trek through the viands of Mediterranean/North Africa."

  • "The overall ambiance of the restaurant was nice, however I did not like the fact that the seating is very close together. Knowing it was Mother's Day the restaurant was understaffed, therefore it took a while for the water, food and ticket to arrive. The flank steak was very chewy/stringy and the risotto was a bit undercooked. Mentioned the chewy steak to the waiter and he just nodded his head and brought the check...probably will not be returning."

  • "Celebrated Mother's Day with family. Great meal starting with mussels that are the best in Austin. Eggs Malta were excellent. Bloody Mary's were very good and they have Spanish beer (Estrella) which is great. Can be very crowded and noisy, but the food and the service were absolutely fantastic. A great little neighborhood restaurant that we enjoy."

  • "A real neighborhood gem in the truest sense of the word. Not usually the place you find in a shopping complex but entering takes you to a Mediterranean locale not out of place in the Riviera. The service is great, the ambience is very nice considering the locale, but the food this particular trip was just not up to usual standards. The tagine pot pie was fine but uninspiring and the half chicken was straightforward but nothing more. Still very good, just not great. Won't stop us from going back next time. "

  • "I was frankly not thrilled with my dish. The menu listed beurre blanc sauce on the fish, which is why I ordered it, but it was hard to identify where the sauce was and the fish didn't have much flavor. The risotto was very good. The wine was fairly priced. The chocolate chili dessert was okay. The restaurant was crowded, so there must be dishes that are tastier. We took my son and his girlfriend out for his birthday, so I was rather disappointed. "

  • "I was a little let down with the brisket ravioli. Great flavor but the pasta was undercooked and chewy. The hummus could have had a bit more flavor but we still enjoyed it. Water table side was warm. Didn't quite understand that."

  • "Love that one can pop into this SW Austin strip mall and find a little gem in Cafe Malta. The menu is foodie ambitious, but can be hit or miss on some dishes. We are willing to overlook that due to location convenience, ambiance (once inside:) and gourmet fresh ingredients."

  • "We definitely recommend Café Malta. It is a cozy place that offers very decent quality dishes at reasonable prices. Their menu covers a big part of the Mediterranean spectrum. They also have a good wine list. All in all, I would define the experience at Café Malta as interesting besides tasty."

  • "I like the house menu, but was severely disappointed with the guest chef's paella. Rice was not fully cooked, seasoning very bland, and one serving was missing much needed seafood. There was not much accountability regarding the paella, I felt that we were dealing with the "emperors new clothes" and no one wanted to deal with the possibility that this particular experiment was a dud. I have had paella and this was a dim shadow. "

  • "My husband and I try to get to Malta at least once a month. I'm a foodie, he's a meat, and potatoes man. There is always something on the menu for each of us. High quality food at a reasonable price. Great cocktails too. The staff is friendly, and the owner always comes over to say hi if he is there. "
