Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent restaurant! We had a fabulous evening. The food was amazing and the wait staff extremely professional. No better place for outdoor dining!"

  • "Malaga is one of our favorites even after moving from its intimate location on the square in downtown McKinney a block away into larger space. Love so many options on the menu."

  • "Cafe Malaga is a unique dining experience with a wide variety of dishes. By ordering many moderately priced Tapas dishes you can sample many creations. We always love this place! I can't wait for the Texas heat to subside enough to dine on their patio / garden which is a unique atmosphere here in North Texas."

  • "The service was slow. My friends tea was empty for over 30 min. and they ran out of sangria. Food was good when we could order it."

  • "We loved magala when it opened on McKinney square. So it's been awhile since we were there. We sat outside which perhaps was our bad but the flies were impressive, not a good thing. The service was fine but gruff (the server seemed to be preoccupied with something else, scanning the other tables or parking lot while serving us.). The food was above average bar food but seemed to have faltered perhaps to serve more people. The two items that stood out as sub-par where the bacon wrapped dates which I'm pretty sure were cooked in advance - dry, overcooked, and the flavor had all melded together, like leftovers.). And the lamb pops were gamey and basically just bad. It's a good place. But for $100 for 2, i expect more"

  • "great good and great atmosphere. The outdoor dining with live music is awesome. This restaurant is great to go to with a group and have a drink outside before eating."

  • "We ate outside with our friends who have never been there. Food was great but flies were so bad! We were embarrassed and told our friends when we have eaten outside before flies had not been a problem. It was also my b-day and beside the flies being a pest we had a great time."

  • "We were so looking forward to eating here but the mixed reviews were spot on. The service was incredibly slow, even though the restaurant was less than half full. The waiter took 10 minutes to take our drink order and then forgot some of the items we ordered and brought duplicates of others. To top it off, the chicken skewers we got were completely RAW. Not just a little pink but 100% raw inside. We were so disgusted that we stopped the rest of our order and walked down the street to another restaurant."

  • "Food was good and the environment was great. They should work on their process for how they handle getting drinks and such to the tables outside. The server would have to walk all the way into the house and then all the way back out to us when there was a bar that they could use has a service bar for the outside guest."

  • "I am so sad because Cafe Malaga is the place I met my fiancé, but now we probably won't go back for a romantic time again and be able to reminisce over our first date together. A few months ago we went and had not a great experience, but it wasn't that a big deal. We were sitting at the bar while waiting for a table and the bartender spit in the trashcan right in front of us and then fixed our drinks. The service we noticed had declined also but we decided to go and give it another try. But this time it was worse. The food is still amazing, just wonderful. But it took 20-30 minutes each time we ordered a drink. We ended up just having to go get our own drinks at the bar. The food took forever and a day and the bathrooms were really filthy."

  • "This restaurant presents dining with a Spainish flair, more Mediterranean than Mexican. We ordered the Pecan Ribeye and it was so flavorful, I consider it one of the best I've had. We were seated outdoors under a lovely canope of trees, which made our experience very cozy and romantic. We intend to come back, but this time with our friends! Superb."

  • "Cafe Malaga has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Perfect for fun, romantic, small or large groups (my sister had her wedding rehearsal dinner here!) The food has NEVER disappointed! There are so many great options, each with their own explosion of flavor. Highly recommend chicken piri piri and the steak empanadas! My favorite times to go are when there is a band playing, because the patio is truly an awesome outdoor dining experience. The only issue with this last visit was an issue with drinks taking too long- it was crowded and all, but 20+ minutes for a cocktail is a bit extreme... Otherwise it's a heavy favorite, especially if you want to step outside of the every-day food and dining experience."

  • "I had heard about Cafe Malaga while travelling. The restaurant was noted for their tapas and because I had a friend that lives in Allen, TX, I thought I'd ask to go there while visiting last weekend. What a fantastic place! My friend is VERY picky and I was worried that she would not like anything on the menu. Boy was I wrong! She, her husband, and her son, loved the restaurant. I had the Solomillo, the Don Piquillo, and the Gambas al ajillo and enjoyed them all tremendously! The waitstaff was very attentive and friendly and willing to answer any and all questions that we had. Next time I visit in the fall, I will definately eat outside as the ambience is awesome and sometimes they have live music!"

  • "This place had yummy good and great ambiance. It also. Had slow service that seems to consistently be overburdened. Could be a wonderful place...just wish they could hire more people to help on weekends!!"

  • "We really like the food and atmosphere of the restaurant, the only thing that would be nicer would to have kids cups with lids. Having two little grandchildren, its a must. Kelley"

  • "We went for Father's Day and had a wonderful time. Everything was delicious and the service was perfect. We sat inside and it was peaceful and cool. Our tapas and appetizers were brought at a nice pace giving us time to enjoy everything while it was fresh. The server was attentive but unobtrusive. We has appetizer portions of the crispy, spicy Mini Beef Empanadas(excellent); cheesy, meaty, yummy Don Pequillo Peppers (our favorite)and Chicken Kebabs (delicious and juicy) as well as tapas size Patatas Bravas (I love these things!), Sweet Red Peppers (good), and Gambas al Ajillo (crazy good!). I had a nice Margarita (thought it was weak, but it hit me later!) and we had some delightfully fresh and creamy Tiramisu for dessert. It was wonderful!"

  • "I'm sorry to say that there was no table ready when we got there. They didn't have see the reservation and we had to wait for an hour. After an hour we got a table and the food and service was great but I wish they would have worked closer with Open table."

  • "Wonderful food, wonderful band, love the outdoor seating and inside is nice too. The service could be improved. Had to wait way to long for a appetizer. Asked where it was. Ended up not having all that was supposed to be on the appetizer tray. So reduced the price. But still took time to bring to us. Salads were brought out. And immediately our entrees arrived. And had even asked seeing our appetizer took so long, that our meal not come out so soon."

  • "The last meal I ate before leaving McKinney for two and a half weeks was at Cafe Malaga, and so was the first meal I ate when I got back. Absolutely love this place!!! This is a place you go to spend a couple of hours or more with great company and excellent food. Reservations are recommended, but if you find yourself at the square on a whim, give the bartop a shot you won't regret it! The staff is friendly and accommodating. The wine isn't horribly overpriced. And did I mention the good is amazing!!!"

  • "Best place for a great evening of excellent food and nice music. No rush service and wonderful outdoor seating. This is Tapas dining at its best. Try the lamb chops! Best in Town! If new to tapas dining ask your server to explain how it works. This is not a normal quick table turn experience. "

  • "We went with a group of friends. We ended up being a party of eight. There was no problem accommodating us. I made reservations the day before and changed them. We were outside on the patio overlooking the grounds. There was a band playing but it wasn't intrusive like bands can be. It was like really good background music. The food, where to begin. We always ask our waiter to help us select what to order. his recommendations were spot on. We had a beef dish with potatoes, piquilla pepers, stuffed peppers, chicken, hummus, and a few other dishes that were all as good or better than the last."

  • "Cafe Malaga is always - ALWAYS - fantastic! Hidden away on a side street off the main square in old downtown McKinney, it would be easy to miss, but what a mistake. We always take guests, social and work, there and, without fail, it's been a winner. Food is unique and wonderful and the environment is memorable."

  • "Cafe Malaga was the IDEAL place for the romantic dinner spot I was looking for to impress a lady I just started dating. She is very into different cultures and is quite the foodie. This place was perfect for that! The service was OUTSTANDING! Our wine glasses were never empty. The ambiance was amazing. The food was top notch. The only thing that was slightly negative was the live music was a little loud. The band wasn't bad, but didn't quite fit with the theme. This is going to be one of our favorite places!"

  • "Food & patio are excellent, but the service is always dreadfully slow. This was our 4th time dining here and the waitstaff has been inattentive and forgetful each time. "

  • "We went for Mother's Day with our two teenage kids. Restaurant was about half-full and it took 40 min just to get 3 tapas. Another 20 min to get ribeyes so fatty and tough we barely are them, and another 20 min to get daughters salad, after everyone else had finished. Definitely not going back. "

  • "This was our second time eating here (brunch both times). The first was not a fluke, this place is really really good. On both occasions we ordered about a dozen items, there were 9 and 7 in our groups during our two visits. Nearly without exception every item was great. We ordered app sized portions of each. Actually we did not even have an entree, rather all small plates we could share. Lamb chops=greatness. Great backyard atmosphere. "

  • "I took my wife, parents and inlaws here for an early Mother's Day celebration. I am a foodie, and I have eaten all over the U.S. I can honestly say that I may have eaten at places with a little better ambience or view, but I can't think of a place where I have had better food. "

  • "We went to Cafe Malaga to see if it would be a place we would consider having our son's rehearsal dinner this summer. After an amazing night of delicious food and good sangria served by an attentive, knowledgeable staff on the charming patio, it was decided this was the perfect place to host our party! Order the bacon wrapped figs, a glass of sangria, and enjoy the live music! You won't be disappointed!"
