  • "The restaurant is in what used to be a general store built in 1850. Wonderful ambiance with brick walls and exposed beams. Bathrooms are located outside in a building made of river rock..(with all of the amenities)."

The only disappointing thing is that they didn't offer any Zinfandel on the menu and the location of the restaurant. This restaurant is a gem, but a word of caution, drive extremely slow on 49 to hwy 50. Many deer all around and darting out in hwy 49."

  • "It is a bit a trip to get to the small town of Lotus in the historical CA gold country but Mahjaic was well worth the trip. The service and food were terrific. Both the wife and I went with the 4 course menu,( at $28 a steal) which was just the right amount of everything. The shrimp appetizer, ceasar, filet and chocolate decadence were all above expectation and the waitress was friendly but not too friendly and very knowledgable. The wine list was limited but had good selections that again were a great value. The old historic building was well done and nice and airy. A unique experience we will go again."

  • "We went to Cafe Mahjaic for our anniversary and opted for the prix fixed menu. It was a great deal and each course was delicious. I had the prawn and it was perfect. My husband had the fish special and he loved it. The Barbera that we had was reasonably priced and was a favorite for sure. My creme brûlée was a wonderful ending to our dinner. Would definitely go back again! The server was very sweet and helpful."

Loved the fact that they have a price fix menu too. You get four courses of smaller portions so you can sample more of the menu."

  • "The name Cafe Mahjaic is misleading, supposedly it is because the owner loved magic. The food is magical. Unfortunately the brick walls, wood floors and high ceilings while providing appeal, do nothing to tamper the noise. The restaurant sounds as though there are twice as many patrons, it is difficult to have a conversation. That said, I would still go back because the food is just that good. Service was great and we had a very enjoyable evening."

  • "We went to celebrate our anniversary and were not disappointed. The Prix Fixe menu allowed us to sample many items, including the night's specials. From the grilled prawn and bruschetta appetizers to the nightly swordfish and halibut specials, everything was superbly prepared with fresh and unique ingredients. This quaint restaurant is not to be missed. It is our favorite "go to" restaurant."

  • "We showed up 10 minutes early for our reservation and we're quickly told to sit for 15 minutes even though the table was already ready. We could not order an appetizer without ordering our entire meal off the full menu. Very rudely told this and when questioned the older hostess/manager/owner (probably) stated "that's the way we do it here!" I've been coming here for a number of years, have personally spent thousands of dollars and recommended much more to all my family and friends in the area. I've never been treated this way on my worldwide travels and have never been instructed so irrationally and rudely anywhere. The chef here is phenomenal, but we took our bottle of wine to go and went down to the Sierra Nevada House."

Not only were we surprised to find this small place filled to the max on a very rainy night, but also what great dining we were in for. The absolute best meal we have had in a very long time. Each plate is a work of art. . It was amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection. The Appetizer was so good. I would recommend this place to all that visit the Coloma area. Not a dress up place, its whatever you want. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We are local residents, and they now have new customers. Thanks Cafe Mahjiac....."

  • "We have ate at this restaurant about 5 times. This last experience, we noticed the food wasn't quite as good as it was in the past. The portion size seems smaller and quality just wasn't as good. We were disappointed, don't know if they got a different chef or what. But for the expensive price of the food it should be fabulous, but it wasn't. Probably won't go back for a long time."

The historic building adds a lot of charm, and the menu is always evolving, making each visit an exciting surprise. I am never disappointed. Very friendly service staff, who met us at the door and very helpful with the menu entree's and the wine list. The fixed price menu included many of the daily specials and came with generous portions. The paella and halbut were very well done and presented nicely. Overall, I would recommend the drive and certainly would use your open table reservation system as it is busy on the weekends with limited seating."

  • "A very beautiful yet simple decor. The staff was accommodating and friendly - very sincere and helpful. Our second time to the restaurant - our first was on our wedding day and this time was one year later - we were once again impressed by the variety of choices on the menu. My wife had the lamb - cooked to perfection (medium-rare as recommended by our wait person) and I had the Chili Relleno. Both were well presented as if the chef had a master's degree in sculpture. The combination of mole and cilantro sauces on the relleno were aesthetic and delicious. The lamb was done with a pomegranate and a vinegar reduction... so good. The wine-by-the glass choices were "excellent" according to my bride and resident expert. We'll be back :)"

  • "Every thing had excellent flavor. Even the decaf coffee was fabulous, which is a rare find. The home baked bread is excellent. The fixed price menu for $28 is a very good deal, coming with four moderately sized courses. I still took home enough entree for lunch, but bigger eaters could comfortably finish their plates. There are several options offered for each course."
