Diner Reviews
  • "So lucky this gem is just down the street. So lucky its in our county. Try to visit every other week--sometimes every week. I get everything I want on fixed price menu. Consistent, thoughtfully prepared meals, elegant dining experience. See you next week!"

  • "The restaurant is in what used to be a general store built in 1850. Wonderful ambiance with brick walls and exposed beams. Bathrooms are located outside in a building made of river rock..(with all of the amenities)."

  • "This has become our favorite dinner date. The prix fixe is very nice because the portions are smaller. The ala carte menu is also outstanding. The decaf coffee is very good."

  • "The setting is special the room calm and romantic. The service is attentive and food always flavorful and gourmet. I would suggest the wine menu be expanded to include more Zinfindels. I think some of the outstanding local wines should be also included."

  • "From the moment we walked in we were greeted in a very lovely manner and the night continued with great food. The only disappointing thing is that they didn't offer any Zinfandel on the menu and the location of the restaurant. This restaurant is a gem, but a word of caution, drive extremely slow on 49 to hwy 50. Many deer all around and darting out in hwy 49."

  • "It is a bit a trip to get to the small town of Lotus in the historical CA gold country but Mahjaic was well worth the trip. The service and food were terrific. Both the wife and I went with the 4 course menu,( at $28 a steal) which was just the right amount of everything. The shrimp appetizer, ceasar, filet and chocolate decadence were all above expectation and the waitress was friendly but not too friendly and very knowledgable. The wine list was limited but had good selections that again were a great value. The old historic building was well done and nice and airy. A unique experience we will go again."

  • "Wonderful destination for a memorable evening. Enjoy a bottle of wine while you wait for a scrumptious homemade made-to-order meal. I love the saganaki, and tonight I followed it with the seared Ahi! Mmmm... For dessert, the chocolate decadence cake is a favorite."

  • "We had heard about this spot for about year and finally made a reservation and went this past week. It lived up to its reputation. The tasting menu was superb and the service was excellent. Will definitely return and bring our food loving friends."

  • "We went to Cafe Mahjaic for our anniversary and opted for the prix fixed menu. It was a great deal and each course was delicious. I had the prawn and it was perfect. My husband had the fish special and he loved it. The Barbera that we had was reasonably priced and was a favorite for sure. My creme brûlée was a wonderful ending to our dinner. Would definitely go back again! The server was very sweet and helpful."

  • "Love the ambience of this restaurant...always accommodating, we had to add people to our table last minute and they did that without hesitation. Food was great as always! Loved the fact that they have a price fix menu too. You get four courses of smaller portions so you can sample more of the menu."

  • "Our first visit and our party of four truly enjoyed. Good menu with many options. Price fixe is a great deal. Really enjoyed the scallops special and chocolate decadence. Very friendly servers. Nice, old 1855 building. We will be back!"

  • "The name Cafe Mahjaic is misleading, supposedly it is because the owner loved magic. The food is magical. Unfortunately the brick walls, wood floors and high ceilings while providing appeal, do nothing to tamper the noise. The restaurant sounds as though there are twice as many patrons, it is difficult to have a conversation. That said, I would still go back because the food is just that good. Service was great and we had a very enjoyable evening."

  • "We went to celebrate our anniversary and were not disappointed. The Prix Fixe menu allowed us to sample many items, including the night's specials. From the grilled prawn and bruschetta appetizers to the nightly swordfish and halibut specials, everything was superbly prepared with fresh and unique ingredients. This quaint restaurant is not to be missed. It is our favorite "go to" restaurant."

  • "Arrive while it is still light to enjoy your beautiful drive and the very pretty local views from inside the lots of years old building. Come with patience in your belly and lightness in your spirit and company that you enjoy. The food is simply wonderful and simultaneously complex. Artistic and well composed in presentation. Cafe Mahjaic is fine dining Magic!"

  • "The prix fixée menu is a bargain for four courses. Every course was artfully presented and memorably delicious. I was told the restaurant was in it's ninth year. Why hadn't I been here before? I'm definitely going back."

  • "What a wonderful and relaxing dining experience. It started with a scenic drive in the Gold Country to this unique restaurant. We enjoyed the Wild California Yellow Tail with mango and cashew coating. Everything was very tasty. We enjoyed a wine selection with the help of our server. Thank you for this experience."

  • "We showed up 10 minutes early for our reservation and we're quickly told to sit for 15 minutes even though the table was already ready. We could not order an appetizer without ordering our entire meal off the full menu. Very rudely told this and when questioned the older hostess/manager/owner (probably) stated "that's the way we do it here!" I've been coming here for a number of years, have personally spent thousands of dollars and recommended much more to all my family and friends in the area. I've never been treated this way on my worldwide travels and have never been instructed so irrationally and rudely anywhere. The chef here is phenomenal, but we took our bottle of wine to go and went down to the Sierra Nevada House."

  • "Great restaurant, consistent wonderful food. Was a little disappointed with the wait between courses, but it was Valentines Day. Maybe book a few less reservation to maintain the excellent service we know and appreciate."

  • "This is the place to now for special occasions. The service and food are excellent, and the fixed price menu is very reasonable for a fine dining experience. The wait staff are very good. Best decaf I have ever had in a restaurant."

  • "Wife's experience was all she expected. I was not prepared for the select menu only and was not pleased with the halibut - too much sauce, too little rice. For me, the best was the dessert and the company of my wife."

  • "Valentines day with another couple, great time. Great special menu all of us enjoyed our dish. Atmosphere and service also very good. Brought our own wine, menu was not familiar at all. Have been wanting to go there for years, glad we finally did will be returning for sure. Pleasant experience, no down side that I can think of. Well done!"

  • "Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable of tje food and wine selection. We dined off of a fixed cost menu for all courses. The portions were a little on Tue small side but everything was delicious. Overall a great experience."

  • "Its been a while since my husband and myself have fine dined. We received a gift certificate from a business associate in thanks of business thru the year to Cafe Mahjiac. Not only were we surprised to find this small place filled to the max on a very rainy night, but also what great dining we were in for. The absolute best meal we have had in a very long time. Each plate is a work of art. . It was amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection. The Appetizer was so good. I would recommend this place to all that visit the Coloma area. Not a dress up place, its whatever you want. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We are local residents, and they now have new customers. Thanks Cafe Mahjiac....."

  • "This is the very nicest restaurant -- whether for a special occasion or a nice dinner with a friend. The food is absolutely delicious and beautifully presented and served; the service is tops; and the location is very special -- a hidden gem. This is our very favorite restaurant in every way. THANK YOU, Cafe Mahjaic!"

  • "We have ate at this restaurant about 5 times. This last experience, we noticed the food wasn't quite as good as it was in the past. The portion size seems smaller and quality just wasn't as good. We were disappointed, don't know if they got a different chef or what. But for the expensive price of the food it should be fabulous, but it wasn't. Probably won't go back for a long time."

  • "We love dining here! The food is always delicious, and each plate is displayed with the love that goes into the wonderful meals served here. It is a friendly, inviting experience, with the textures of the old brick building making you feel a part of the Gold Country that you are in. We find it the type of place where you want to go back to on a regular basis, and each time you do, you are glad you did!"

  • "If you live in the country, away from the City's Restaurants, you expect to sacrifice excellent cuisine. Not so. Mahjaic is a great restaurant by any standard. The historic building adds a lot of charm, and the menu is always evolving, making each visit an exciting surprise. I am never disappointed. I guess the only issue is getting in...I got shut out on NYE, bummer."

  • "Very rustic cafe, which has been nicely remodeled without losing the feel of the past. Very friendly service staff, who met us at the door and very helpful with the menu entree's and the wine list. The fixed price menu included many of the daily specials and came with generous portions. The paella and halbut were very well done and presented nicely. Overall, I would recommend the drive and certainly would use your open table reservation system as it is busy on the weekends with limited seating."

  • "We had heard how good this restaurant was and when our food finally came. It took almost an hour after we were seated for the appetizers to arrive. They had to have been short staffed in the kitchen. We will give them another in the future."

  • "A very beautiful yet simple decor. The staff was accommodating and friendly - very sincere and helpful. Our second time to the restaurant - our first was on our wedding day and this time was one year later - we were once again impressed by the variety of choices on the menu. My wife had the lamb - cooked to perfection (medium-rare as recommended by our wait person) and I had the Chili Relleno. Both were well presented as if the chef had a master's degree in sculpture. The combination of mole and cilantro sauces on the relleno were aesthetic and delicious. The lamb was done with a pomegranate and a vinegar reduction... so good. The wine-by-the glass choices were "excellent" according to my bride and resident expert. We'll be back :)"

  • "Every thing had excellent flavor. Even the decaf coffee was fabulous, which is a rare find. The home baked bread is excellent. The fixed price menu for $28 is a very good deal, coming with four moderately sized courses. I still took home enough entree for lunch, but bigger eaters could comfortably finish their plates. There are several options offered for each course."
