A word from Cafe Luxembourg
In 1983, Café Luxembourg opened its doors to become the quintessential neighborhood bistro of the Upper West Side. The dining room of this charming 90 seat restaurant glows in the warm light of the Jean Perzel fixtures and antique mirrors.

Located on 70th Street just west of Broadway, Café Luxembourg entertains New Yorkers and celebrities alike. The full service bar is home to many regulars. The lively buzz of the dining room is inviting and intimate. The frequency of dining customers is testament to the sincere efforts by the entire Café Luxembourg staff.

The menu changes seasonally as well as offering daily specials. The classic menu dishes maintain a level of cooking on par with the city’s best restaurants. Café Luxembourg offers beautifully prepared food with professional, yet unpretentious service at reasonable prices.

  • "Been to this restaurant about 5 times. The wine list is awful and the food is average at best and the menu has not changed at all in a year! Atmosphere is cozy and lively but otherwise nothing special unless they change the menu and put decent wine on the list."

  • "Even though it has been around for many years, it still remains a top notch bistro."

  • "Took a friend for his birthday and it was, as usual , a very specal experience Good food and service and it is always a delight to return there."

  • "Not the greatest ambiance, a little dull, in fact, but the food was very good. It was also a little pricey."

  • "We went there 30 years ago for brunch when it first opened, and now 30 years later, the experience was even better. For a NYC restaurant that's an extraordinary accomplishment."

  • "We have been going there for over 25 years since they opened & they are always excellent. More recently we always go for breakfast / brunch & they are consistently on the mark. Service is great & the food is excellent. Worth a visit during the week if you have time to beat the week-end."

  • "Other restaurants come and go, but Cafe Luxembourg endures, and deservedly. When I started going there at the turn of the century, it was an oasis in the UWS food desert; fourteen years later, there are lots of good restaurants in the area, yet CL remains the best, at least for European cuisine. Not only is the food great but the service is friendly and professional, the drinks are strong and the wine list is excellent. Be sure to order the chicken and the steak frites--but really, you can't go wrong. Beyond the food, drink and service, I love the ambience--it's an idealized version of Paris."

  • "We eat at Cafe Luxembourg once in a while and usually for special occasions. We ate there last Sunday for my wife's birthday. It was amazing and we came away committed to visit more often. Great food, service, cocktails, wine, atmosphere. What more could you want!!"

  • "Love their omlettes. Always perfect. The rest of the food is delicious."

  • "They do it really well here. Really good French bistro food, good service, French ambiance and not too loud when you're early (we eat at 6:00 before concerts.)..... Many of the service staff are themselves musicians, and the restaurant is really convenient to Lincoln Center. Combined with a prix fixe price for early dining, what more could you ask?"

  • "Cafe Luxembourg is a crown jewel of the Upper West Side. Restaurants come and go; Cafe Lux is here to stay. And thank heaven for that!"

  • "Just a wonderful experience every time. This should be a stop on anyone's trip to New York. The country salad alone is worth the trip."

  • "I live right around the corner and want to like this restaurant. It is so convenient and popular. I was there for brunch last weekend and ordered the poached tuna in olive oil, which I thought had promise and was a good and low fat alternative to traditional egg dishes. It had a strange taste with little garnish beyond a hard boiled egg and lettuce. I would not recommend. My companion had eggs benedict, which he liked. When I have dined here in the past it has been the service that has been uneven, not the food. This time it was the other way around."

  • "-Order was taken incorrectly - was given appitizer size of steak tartare. While their effort to correct via "comping" the french fries that were supposed to accompany the entree size was great - they were soggy and cold - you would think this restaurat would know how to cook frites based on its pedegree -Asked twice for bottle of wine - received 40 minutes after first request"

  • "The food was fine -- not great, but fine. But the restaurant was almost entirely empty, and yet we were sat at a table right next to the service station and the entrance to the bathrooms, so there was a constant parade of people walking behind my chair, carrying glasses, plates, heading to the restroom. And over the courst of a 2-hour lunch we apparently had three different servers, all of whom had to be introduced to us, all of whom wanted to come by and ask if we wanted water, more bread, another drink, dessert, was everything ok, how were we doing, were we enjoying lunch, was there anything we needed and on and on and on. Nothing terrible, but quite a lot less professional than I would have expected from a restaurant like this."

  • "It is so popular and so good and so crowded! We have learned through the many years to avoid peak dinner times - too many people in tight seating and close tables, too much noisy conversation, everyone getting bumped.. We like the late leisurely lunches and very early dinners. The food is delicious and the professional service attentive and pleasant."

  • "As the Cafe touts itself as having French cuisine, I came with great expectations that were dashed severely. I ordered the signature French soup, onion; the onion and some of the cheese was burnt destroying the soup. I ordered liver and onions, another typically good French dish, but this liver had not been trimmed of its fat and had not been merely dusted with flour but wore it like a heavy winter's top coat! I might have reported this to my server, but he disappeared after taking my order and it was the bus-man who brought me the, dare I call it such, food. A New York friend of mine agreed that the cuisine there is hit and miss, and that the hit was consistently in the burger and fries. I shan't return to find out."

  • "we are therefore my favorite icecream. its heavy for sure, but unforgetable. But find the clam good too, and the calve liver, the smell is so good. will back someday to try other dishes."

  • "We have been to the cafe 7 times , one dinner and all the rest lunch, brunch or breakfast. Because it had always been enjoyable we were excited and looking forward to dinner. What a disappointment my husband ordered the pork dish and thinks it is probably the worst he has had. I had steak and was not very impressed. I would not return there for dinner or recommend it to a friend. Lunch, brunch and breakfast have always been fine and I hope they continue to be. Since the cafe has such good reviews I am wondering if the chef had changed"

  • "Have been going here for a long time. Especially nice for brunch as it is one of the few UWS haunts that takes a reservation. No waiting outside like one would at Barney Greengrass or other "famous" city breakfast places. Is the food as good? Well, it is different and in my opinion, perhaps not as good as some, but it is definitely tasty and just fine and being able to sit in a comfortable, nice environment with good, albeit not great, food with good to great service is worth the visit."

  • "I eat here regularly & am never disappointed. They have been constantly turning out excellent food since the 1970's. Whether I have their of omelettes, steak tartar, great fish, salads of all types regardless of what any of my friends order everyone loves their choice."

  • "With red leather banquettes and wicker seats, very strange décor. Our salmons both had a good crispy top but the inside temperatures were off. One was raw and the other was well done. My burger was equally ill-prepared, it was ordered medium rare and it was overcooked, dry and borderline flavorless; bacon was very salty, I did like the Gruyere. The frites were very good. If we had the time (we were catching a concert) all of the entrees would probably have been returned to the kitchen. The server was very good, she knew the menu was helpful and professional. The other staff was challenged. They could all use a bit of retraining. Café Luxembourg is a diner trying to serve French cuisine."

    Dined on 7/8/2014
  • "In a city where 10% of the restaurants go out of business every year, it is significant that Cafe Luxembourg is still excellent and crowded after thirty years. The staff is friendly and accommodating, service is fast and attentive, and food is excellent. Even the prices, for an established Manhattan restaurant near the Beacon Theater and Lincoln Center, are attractive. And while the room can get a bit noisy when filled, it isn't impossible to have a conversation. All in all, a reliable go-to destination."
    Dined on 7/8/2014
  • "The entrees are quite good (although one person's salmon was overcooked); but, a little expensive for what you get."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "The "Cafe Luxembourg" is unfortunately relying upon an Upper West Side location to enhance the reputation of what looks to be an old 50's diner that is serving casual French cuisine. Red high backed booths with old tile and tables with wicker seats fill the space. Tables had to be physically moved aside to allow my wife, who is very petite, access to her seat (same again upon departure - the table of regulars next to us clearly used to the table shuffle). Fine dining this is not. Devoted locals say what they may, this restaurant is in need of a serious update. Myself -Tuna Crudo (flavorless), followed by a thankfully well prepared Pork Duo as the main My wife -Mixed Greens, followed by a less than thrilling Yellowfin Tuna Burger"
