The quality of food is exceptional. Service is generally good, and depending on your server, exceptional. I have had some of the absolute best waiters ever there, and then some that are fine, but un-exceptional. Other than that uncertainty, everything else is top notch!

It has the ambience of a genuine Parisian bistro with a suitably U.S.-adapted menu. What it does not have is the sometimes indifferent -- and at other times, downright hostile -- service of a Parisian bistro. The staff seems to be specially selected for servers who are friendly, funny, and helpful. On top of that, the food is delicious without being pretentious. It is the perfect place for a late breakfast/early lunch; for pre- and post-theater (Lincoln Center is a mere five-minutes' walk away); and for everything in between. It's been around since the early 80s but still feels pleasantly trendy without being snooty. The staff is professional, friendly, helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable about the wine list and of course the menu itself. Oysters on the half shell is one of the best reasons to go, and we were not disappointed in the Belons we ordered, although they are pricy at $24 for a half dozen. The frites are hot, crispy, and salty. Traditional duck a l'orange is very good also.
