A word from Cafe Luxembourg
In 1983, Café Luxembourg opened its doors to become the quintessential neighborhood bistro of the Upper West Side. The dining room of this charming 90 seat restaurant glows in the warm light of the Jean Perzel fixtures and antique mirrors.

Located on 70th Street just west of Broadway, Café Luxembourg entertains New Yorkers and celebrities alike. The full service bar is home to many regulars. The lively buzz of the dining room is inviting and intimate. The frequency of dining customers is testament to the sincere efforts by the entire Café Luxembourg staff.

The menu changes seasonally as well as offering daily specials. The classic menu dishes maintain a level of cooking on par with the city’s best restaurants. Café Luxembourg offers beautifully prepared food with professional, yet unpretentious service at reasonable prices.

Been going here for over a decade and it always delivers. Great food, great service, great ambiance. Open late enough that you can avoid the onslaught of small children that has taken over Manhattan. Never had a bad meal. The meat dishes and fries are always the best things on the menu. Pastas tend to be lacking, should just take them off the menu.

We had a 5 o'clock dinner in order to get to a show at 7:30. The restaurant was celebrating 31 years in business ( ! In New York!) and they offered a free cocktail or wine. The food was fine, not spectacular, the service was just right (attentive but not hovering), lovely flowers about, and a good neighborhood vibe. Profiteroles for dessert and we had plenty of time to walk leisurely to the Roundabout Theater on 54th.

Visited two-nights-in-a-row while in THE city on business. Dining alone at the bar the first night, made two new friends who made me vow to let them know when I'd be back to meet at Cafe L. again. Second night, a friend who's a true New Yorker insisted on Cafe L., but things got messy. A diner seated too close gave us a bump as he rose to greet friends, spilling an untouched vodka soda. The Cafe L. Brigade had us dried off with a new drink within a minute or two. (Who's with me here, shouldn't the j..k who caused the commotion have bought me another drink? Nope. Not even another apology as we departed.) I love the neighborhood feel, you might catch a celeb. Food, prices and ambience are worth a visit. Seating is tight.

It had been several years since we last frequented Cafe Luxembourg, but it is still consistently good. The steak tartare was sublime, as were the oysters. The steak in the steak frites wasn't exactly the "blue" I requested, but it was still good and the frites were ... well .... amazing as always. We were treated well by everyone from the front door, to the handsome Argentine maitre with a killer smile, and the great waitstaff. Makes me want to return to Manhattan soon. Thanks for a great evening.

My wife and I live in the West Village so we don't get to the upper west side a lot. But, when we do I always make a reservation for Cafe Luxembourg. We love the atmosphere and until this visit the food has always been good. I ordered the calves liver rare. My wife ordered steak frites. My liver had the skin still on so it was like trying to cut into a piece of leather. I peeled off the skin and the piece was so thick I couldn't cut it with a steak knife. I NEVER send my dinner back but this was inedible. I will go back because I love the place and i'm chalking it up to a bad night.

Been eating here for years and it never fails. The menu is simple but well executed, and the room is cozy without being cramped. Not sure what the postcard with the naked ladies is about, but they have been using them for years when the bill is delivered. The tuna crudo app was as good as sashimi in the best Japanese place and my chicken was cooked perfectly. The mango and peach (apricot? can't recall now) tartin was smooth and fruity with a firm piece of "cake" in there. The steak frite has not crossed the $40 boundary, which made it especially delicious. One of the most reliable and tastiest places to eat in the Lincoln Center area.

Been to this restaurant about 5 times. The wine list is awful and the food is average at best and the menu has not changed at all in a year! Atmosphere is cozy and lively but otherwise nothing special unless they change the menu and put decent wine on the list.

Other restaurants come and go, but Cafe Luxembourg endures, and deservedly. When I started going there at the turn of the century, it was an oasis in the UWS food desert; fourteen years later, there are lots of good restaurants in the area, yet CL remains the best, at least for European cuisine. Not only is the food great but the service is friendly and professional, the drinks are strong and the wine list is excellent. Be sure to order the chicken and the steak frites--but really, you can't go wrong. Beyond the food, drink and service, I love the ambience--it's an idealized version of Paris.

They do it really well here. Really good French bistro food, good service, French ambiance and not too loud when you're early (we eat at 6:00 before concerts.)..... Many of the service staff are themselves musicians, and the restaurant is really convenient to Lincoln Center. Combined with a prix fixe price for early dining, what more could you ask?

I live right around the corner and want to like this restaurant. It is so convenient and popular. I was there for brunch last weekend and ordered the poached tuna in olive oil, which I thought had promise and was a good and low fat alternative to traditional egg dishes. It had a strange taste with little garnish beyond a hard boiled egg and lettuce. I would not recommend. My companion had eggs benedict, which he liked. When I have dined here in the past it has been the service that has been uneven, not the food. This time it was the other way around.

The food was fine -- not great, but fine. But the restaurant was almost entirely empty, and yet we were sat at a table right next to the service station and the entrance to the bathrooms, so there was a constant parade of people walking behind my chair, carrying glasses, plates, heading to the restroom. And over the courst of a 2-hour lunch we apparently had three different servers, all of whom had to be introduced to us, all of whom wanted to come by and ask if we wanted water, more bread, another drink, dessert, was everything ok, how were we doing, were we enjoying lunch, was there anything we needed and on and on and on. Nothing terrible, but quite a lot less professional than I would have expected from a restaurant like this.

It is so popular and so good and so crowded! We have learned through the many years to avoid peak dinner times - too many people in tight seating and close tables, too much noisy conversation, everyone getting bumped.. As the Cafe touts itself as having French cuisine, I came with great expectations that were dashed severely. I ordered the signature French soup, onion; the onion and some of the cheese was burnt destroying the soup. I ordered liver and onions, another typically good French dish, but this liver had not been trimmed of its fat and had not been merely dusted with flour but wore it like a heavy winter's top coat! I might have reported this to my server, but he disappeared after taking my order and it was the bus-man who brought me the, dare I call it such, food. A New York friend of mine agreed that the cuisine there is hit and miss, and that the hit was consistently in the burger and fries. I shan't return to find out.

We have been to the cafe 7 times , one dinner and all the rest lunch, brunch or breakfast. Because it had always been enjoyable we were excited and looking forward to dinner. What a disappointment my husband ordered the pork dish and thinks it is probably the worst he has had. I had steak and was not very impressed. I would not return there for dinner or recommend it to a friend. Lunch, brunch and breakfast have always been fine and I hope they continue to be. Since the cafe has such good reviews I am wondering if the chef had changed

Have been going here for a long time. Especially nice for brunch as it is one of the few UWS haunts that takes a reservation. No waiting outside like one would at Barney Greengrass or other "famous" city breakfast places. Is the food as good? Well, it is different and in my opinion, perhaps not as good as some, but it is definitely tasty and just fine and being able to sit in a comfortable, nice environment with good, albeit not great, food with good to great service is worth the visit.
