A word from Cafe Luna - San Diego
An Evening at Cafe Luna has best been described as "A Celestial Dining Experience"
Each and every item on our menu, including our savory nightly specials, are hand-crafted to order with you, our guest, in mind. According to owner, Susan Haywood, "Our word-of-mouth reputation brings in new customers but it's the food that keeps them coming back." Café Luna was named "San Diego's Best Kept Secret" from San Diego Home & Garden readers. In addition Café Luna has been awarded 1st place for "Best Italian Food" on the channel 10 A-List. Some of Café Luna's signature dishes are our Tornadoes Gorgonzola, our Fusilli Umbriaco and our highly requested Rosetta - a homemade pasta sheet rolled with ham and Swiss cheese that's sliced and baked with a Parmesan cream sauce. In addition to exceptional food & service, Café Luna also has an extensive wine list and a full bar. The atmosphere is romantic yet comfortable. We also offer off site catering, ask for our General Manager, Jamie Wimmer.Continued

  • "Could not have had better service from Tory! We had a reservation for six at 7:45 and when I called to let them know we would be late, Tory answered the phone, reassured me they would hold our table and when we arrived greeted us and never once made us feel rushed or hurried. She was knowledgeable about the menu and easily accommodated a few diners with special needs. Thanks for providing us with a wonderful evening!"

  • "Fantastic Food - service was spot on and server knew the menu. The hostess was adorable. I'm from NJ and found the recommendation on my hotel website and hoped my co-workers from LA and Northern Cal were OK with the choice. I chose it because it was close and the website looked great - Boy are we happy we did. When I get back to my office in SanDiego - this is where I would come back to eat! Well Done Cafe Luna."

  • "This is such a great, dependable gem of a restaurant. Dishes are prepared with care, flair and savoir faire. The service is always pleasant, informative and attentive. Great bar for small-group happy hour meetings. The ambience is great - the Tuscan theme is tasteful and not overbearing. I have been back again and again and would certainly recommend this as a highlight of the Sabre Springs area."

  • "We love Café Luna and have been going there with Mom's Night Out since 1999 because the atmosphere is great, the prices are reasonable and the wait staff make you feel like you're their only table."

  • "This is one of the best restaurants in the area. Has been for about 20 years. Top chef, fine service, always accommodating. The specials are always a nice surprise. Always get some Fuscili Umbriaco as a side dish. Love the lamb, the osso bucco, fruit d'mares (shellfish pasta). Salads are amazing - fresh, light, flavorful. Little pricey but I always feel very satisfied with the experience. Always make a reservation."

  • "Authentic, rich Italian food. Everything is cooked to perfection. My favorite restaurant ever."

  • "The locals know this is a standout restaurant. The dishes are relatively complex that it is an a shame this exceptional restaurant is across the parking lot from the Olive Garden. If you want a fantastic meal but don't have time to drive to the Gaslamp, La Jolla or Del Mar, stop by Café Luna. You will be impressed."

  • "We moved nearby in December and needed a place to eat one night. We accidentally stumbled into Cafe Luna. We found a gem! They serve delicate beautifully crafted dishes. We returned with family in February and mmmm was heard throughout the meal. The top starter was the Elk Carpaccio and we also enjoyed the fresh dungeness Crab Cake with apple fennel slaw. The "special" Golden Beet Salad was the favorite salad full of so many tasty parts. The Osso Buco melted in your mouth. Thumbs up, Tornadoes Gorganzola. I shared tastes of my Vitello Limone (veal piccata) and everyone gave a "mmmmm" followed by that might be the best entree! The fresh pasta dishes rival any. I don't think you would be disappointed with any choice from this wonderful menu!"

  • "We have been dining here for over 10 years and always have a fantastic meal! Never once disappointed- and enjoy the convenience of fine dining in our own neighborhood! I always recommend Cafe Luna as a special occasion or romantic place to dine out. Bon appetit!"

  • "The wine list was way, way, way over priced. That said we did get a nice house red for $8 a glass. The place has a great ambience and is very convenient. Service was excellent. It got very busy and loud around 7pm on Friday. It was also very stuffy, as if there's not enough fresh air flowing in the place."

  • "Another wonderful evening at Cafe Luna! The food was delicious as always! I highly recommend the Tornadoes of Beef and, of course, the Rosetta."

  • "We have been to Cafe Luna several times and always find it to be a pleasant experience. However, we were disappointed to discover that they no longer accept the Passport card. Had we known this at the beginning of the meal, we might have ordered differently. We were surprised that they would change their acceptance of it midstream. My cappellini was nice but not quite as tasty as I had hoped. My husband loved his lasagna and our two salads were very good. It's a pricey restaurant; especially if one likes wine but good for a special occasion."

  • "This little restaurant is hidden in Carmel Mtn Ranch. It has an Italian baroque decor, quiet and calming. We were so impressed with the food! Homemade pasta Bolognese, Chicken marsala and dreamy chocolate mousse. It's nice to find a restaurant that serves high quality food and has a quiet atmosphere."

  • "Noisy place that serves bad food, extremely overpriced. We took the fish special of the day, described as "sea bass on bed of spinach" with couscous. What arrived was a chunk of overcooked, tasteless fish in heavily sweetened sauce on a pile of grain and corn, with a couple of sprigs of kale. Salad dressing, too, overly sweet, bread spongy tasteless all-American white, wine list pretentious. The cook appears to know nothing about authentic Italian cuisine."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants, as well as my 10 year old daughter's. We both had the Umbriaco sauce but with different pastas. I love the bucatini, she loves the penne and they were both cooked to perfection, al dente. The dipping sauce is also amazing. We were there for lunch and salad is served with your lunch. It was a simple, yet deliciously light and refreshing salad. We try to have dinner or lunch here often and the food and service have always been consistently fantastic."

  • "We needed a place that had good tasting food and was close to the office for a quick after business meeting dinner. Cafe Luna was the first place that came to mind. It has been a while since I had dined here and they did not disappoint. The three of us were seated quickly and service was quick, efficient and unobtrusive."

  • "This was our first dining experience at Cafe Luna. I have nothing but praise for the food. The wine list was adequate but could be more imaginative. My complaint had to do with the training that the wait staff have been given. We were still sitting down ......literally......when the waiter was handing us the menu's. The waiters were all very attentive and caring about our experience, but they are either inexperienced or lacked training. Waiters need to remove anything they can from the small table before food is brought. There was a lot of fumbling when our entre was brought ...... things were moved around and the bread and dip were removed. So the dining experience was interrupted helping the waiter so we could continue our mean."

  • "We had been to Cafe Luna several years ago and found it very good. This visit was even better! Sunday night they have half-price bottles of wine, adding to the fun. We started by sharing a lovely prosciutto salad with our $15.00 bottle of Zenuto Pinot Grigio. Our main courses were a tasty sea bass (a little salty for our taste, but very good nonetheless) over risotto and chicken stuffed with pancetta and gorgonzola over house-made fettuccini with a yummy light cream sauce. We finished it off with a lemon tart and cannoli. Our server was a delight, giving us just the right amount of attention. This is a little hidden gem in a strip mall behind a Carl's Junior!"

  • "Wonderful Saturday Dinner featuring outstanding food and service. The poached Pear Salad was really fresh and layered in flavors - a perfect beginning. Wife had one of the evenings Specials which she loved and my Rosetta was wonderful. The house Cabernet was served a bit chilled, but was very good. We love Cafe Luna, our only real complaint is how close the tables are to each other. Service was outstanding, nothing was overlooked and given how busy it was that level of personalized service is hard to pull off, really great job."

  • "Have enjoyed great service and consistently great food here. Perfect for girls lunch, or casual dinner. This is a small neighborhood gem I ordered the grilled chicken salad with fig balsamic salad dressing...perfectly cooked and perfectly flavored. Love the fresh bread and olive oil dip...yummmm!"

  • "I've known that Cafe Luna is in Carmel Mtn Ranch, I knew where it was located, but I didn't realize how extraordinary it is! The food was absolutely delicious. I could have taken a whole kettle of the pumpkin spice soup and eaten it all! Everything was fresh, made to order. The waitstaff and there backups were very attentive, even coming to constantly refill my water. We will definitely go back!"

  • "This was my third lunch dining experience at Chelsea's Café Luna and it was wonderful! The food, ambience, service was outstanding. I had the special of the day, blackened shrimp on a bed of lovely greens and would order it again and again. Great restaurant. Just wish it was closer to where we live. It was a :45 drive but worth it!"

  • "After a vacation trip to Hawaii we ate here on our last night before flying home. It was so delicious and enjoyable. I had a fantastic salad and pasta (two choices on one plate). It was just want I needed and wanted. Luckily my son lives in San Diego so I know I will be back. Also the service was fantastic."

  • "My wife and i first met another couple here and were flabbergasted that we had never been before. Good meal, attentive staff and decent price. We have been back several times now and it is becoming one of our favorites. Menu has a nice selection. We'll be back. You can drop $100 for two with a drink"

  • "The music was too loud and not the right age. The main entrees were great, but the desserts and appetizers were less than mediocre. Drinks were very mediocre and expensive for happy hour ($9.00 or more). We were charged the wrong prices and no one was willing to take care of it. Never saw a manager. Eaten her for lunch before and was very pleased. Now, I will never go back. We were considering this location for a "rehearsal dinner" for our son and it is definitely off the list. The servers did not care about the older customers only concerned about the young girls. One last thing, we kept hearing a conversation from some older lady at the bar about how she works here long hours and is not appreciated. Did not need to hear this."

  • "One word describes our dinner. . . perfect. So many great choices on the daily special - even before we opened the menu. The soup was amazing, all items were delicious, well plated and presented, and service impeccable. The wine was great, always glad to see "by-the-glass" offerings of good quality since wife doesn't drink. We like to try restaurants we have never visited at least once or twice a month, , , this turned out to be a great find, and we will return."
