A word from Cafe La Ruche
La Ruche is French for Beehive. And Café La Ruche is aptly named. You'll often find my bistro abuzz with laughter, convivial conversation, and good cheer. Of course, I make sure that's all punctuated with wonderful food, the best espresso and cappuccino in town, and our signature pastries. A bit of Paris on the Potomac. If you've not dropped by in a while, I invite you back. We'll work hard to make you a regular.Continued

  • "We have been fans of LR for years and went back recently for birthday brunch with group of friends. It was less than great, and won't be going back. I understand that it is under new ownership, but the quality of food was disappointing. I am sure the chef has done his best given the changes the new owners have made. Please - stale French bread ? How could you?"

The atmosphere reminds us of being at a small bistro in Paris, and the service is very accommodating and not intrusive. We'll continue to enjoy good, basic French dishes at this small, quiet spot."

  • "My husband and I have been eating at Cafe La Ruche for the 30 years we've been in the DC area. We like how laid-back it is, not pretentious, and we love the French food. We can always count on a good salad, beautiful quiche, hanger steaks, and good glass of wine. We decided to come here last week to celebrate his birthday, as he loves desserts and the desserts here are just scrumptious. We enjoyed our meal, the night was quiet as it was cold and rainy, and the Cafe, on a quiet Georgetown street, was warm and welcoming. It's equally nice in the summer, with its large patio/garden area. Highly recommend!!"

  • "I have wanted to try this restaurant for many years, and I finally got around to it last week. Unfortunately, the food was incredibly bland. The frites with my steak-frite we're not worth eating -- starchy emptiness. The steak was decent. My friend's beef bourguinon was not prepared properly; the kitchen clearly over relied on tomato paste to make the sauce."

  • "We have gone to La Ruche several times for brunch. The food is excellent. Our friend got steak fritte and I was very jealous, but my quiche was delicious. Want to go back to try the onion soup and pate that I saw another table eating. And desert - I have to go back just to try their deserts."

  • "The food was passable, but very heavy and greasy. Service was ok - Nothing special. IT felt like it's seen better days and is a relic that earns its good reviews based on the memory of what it was decades ago. If you don't eat out much and are looking for a good place for an occasional brunch, you can do much better than Cafe La Ruche. I was disappointed."

  • "Cafe La Ruche doesn't disappoint with its expertly prepared food, quick service and lovely ambiance. We had the Beef Bourguignon (a special) which was so very tasty -- the meat melted in your mouth. We also had the vegetable soup which was hearty without being heavy -- perfect for the winter we've been having."

  • "Come for the eggs and salads, stay for the tarts. These fruit tarts (banana, strawberry, raspberry, mixed fruit) have been consistently good for 35 years or more. They make them fresh several times a day. If you want an authentic French Cafe in Georgetown, and don't mind the hassle of finding a meter, then La Rouche is for you. Try it when the weather is nice for al fresco dining."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our lunch at Cafe la Ruche. The restaurant did a decent job trying to create the feel of a country French restaurant. You won't exactly feel like you're across thr Atlantic, but it does have a unique feel. The French onion soup was very tasty. The chicken cordon blue was also good, but you might consider trying something more adventuresome."

  • "The charms of CLaR are may not be immediately evident, but if you have ever lived in France, CLaR feels like a favorite restaurant that became your neighborhood hang-out years ago. Lots has changed in Washington, but CLaR still offers: a really good meal; great prices; a "full pour" for a glass of wine; and solid service (including the owner greeting you at the door!). If you are looking for a place that gives you a realistic French, bistro experience, then CLaR is your place. Recently, I had the lentils with sausage -- had to ask for container to take home some of the meal. The wine daily special was great and the dessert was as tasty as the coffee that rounded out my meal. In 5 star hotel across St., CUP of lentil soup, 2X $ of CLaR"

  • "Cafe La Ruche is in a terrific location -- tucked away on 31st Street by the canal in Georgetown, but the menu is very limited with tired renditions of French food from the 1960s. The steak is drowned in a fairly bad Bernaise sauce. The wine is undrinkable. The pastries, bread and soups are fine and the atmosphere is warm and cozy. Please update the menu!"

  • "Cafe La Ruche usually does a brisk New Year's Eve business without an expensive pre fixe menu. We had an early reservation, so did not stay for the complimentary champagne at midnight. It still manages to pull off the ambience of a modest Parisian cafe with a menu that recalls my dining experiences there. Service was very good. I enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu, my wife Salmon Au Four. Some of the dessert choices were not available, but we were happy with our choices (me chocolate mousse, she fruit tart). We both noted that the food has improved over our last visit."

  • "We were staying at the Ritz-Carlton and wanted to go somewhere close by for a light dinner. Less than a block away, Café La Ruche was a real find. The bistro-style dining area was festively decorated with flags and Parisian memorabilia. The food: salmon for her, coq a vin for me, was exceptional as was the service. The guitarist-vocalist was very versatile, personable, and added a pleasant touch to a most enjoyable evening."

  • "My wife and then two young boys got caught one night in an unforecast snow storm trying to get back from an appointment in NW DC. I was stuck in the Pentagon. They found La Ruche and hung out there. I took the new Metro to Rosslyn and walked through the storm like Dr. Zhivago, and we all had a memorable, warm evening at La Ruche, and we still talk about it. This past weekend, my wife and I treated our oldest, his wife and the three grandkids to the Nutcracker Ballet at Kennedy Center and then walked over to La Ruche. It's been modernized and updated, but I felt the same warm ambience when we walked in. The food was delicious, the service was wonderful, and we had a wonderful time. We then walked home to Rosslyn. A perfect day!"

  • "What I liked: A short, well chosen wine list with reasonable prices. Food quality was good and reasonably priced for G-Town. Did not leave hungry. Best pommes frites I have had in some time, nice and crispy, not like the soggy five-guys style with which this area is famous. Not crowded, but a nice-size crowd for a Friday night. Did not like: Limited menu. Chicken with salad should be served with a piece of roast chicken (with choice of dark or white meat) rather than a grilled boneless chicken breast."

  • "This used to be a favorite of ours--especially the ambiance (but the food used to be good, too). Not sure if the chef or ownership changed, but the food was barely mediocre and the garish lighting detracted from the cute, intimate French bistro it used to be. The potato soup was GREEN & tasted more like split pea. The coq au vin clearly contained no wine, wasn't long-braised, &tasted more like tomato paste than wine. The fries w/the steak frite were obviously frozen from a bag. We were such huge fans of this place & used to come here regularly, but hadn't been since June, when it was still in it's former glory. It was so sad to see how much it had changed in just a few months. Our waitress was pleasant & attentive. Not sure we'll be back."
