Diner Reviews
  • "Gem just off city center square in Sonoma. Service was excellent. Great fresh salads. Nice list list -- waitress made a great call picking a wine that paired with roasted chicken and sole -- which were both terrific."

  • "We hadn't been to Cafe La Haye in several years. Happy to report it is as good -- no, better -- than ever. The menu, though small, is chock full of winners, both as starters and as entrees. The fried oysters, which were done perfectly and served in a wonderful sauce, should not be missed, and the filet mignon, which was served with broccoli rabe and creamy garlic mashed potatoes, was as good as I've had anywhere. The restaurant is small and intimate, and the service is attentive and friendly without being overbearing."

  • "We recently visited Sonoma and went to Cafe La Haye on our last night and couldn't have asked for a better meal to end our trip! I had the filet and my husband the pork chop and they were both excellent. Wonderful bottle of zinfandel as well that we'll definitely go in search for in the future! Great spot and great service - a definite must in Sonoma!"

  • "Delicious fresh and local cuisine. My salmon entree was light, served in a well seasoned broth with vegetables, and my husband loved the tagliatelle pasta, served with lamb meatballs. The owner, Saul, checked in to say hello and to inquire about our experience at his charming little restaurant. Our waitress was also attentive and congenial. Highly recommend this restaurant which was just off of the square in Sonoma."

  • "Food was very good. I had the pasta with lamb meatballs which was excellent. My wife had the fish and it was good (not great) that more seasoning would have enhanced. My biggest gripe is we had a glass of merlot and it was about 45 degrees. The flavor was not evident at this temperature. Service was very fast, so the wine never warmed up. We were told, well we keep our open wine in a cooler overnight. I can understand that, but you also can bring it out before serving. Folks, it is the wine country!!"

  • "Cafe La Haye is always a must when we visit Sonoma. The daily risotto special uses fresh ingredients and combines incredible flavors. The risotto is the best we have ever had, anywhere. The food is consistently outstanding"

  • "We were looking forward to our dinner at Cafe La Haye. The reviews were excellent and we were excited to try the restaurant. In special comments when I made the reservation, I included that two in our party were Gluten Sensitive. The restaurant confirmed and we were all set. Imagine our surprise when we sat down and reminded our server about the gluten allergies. Not only was she caught off guard, we were told that the chef can work around it but it has to be at his discretion what you're served. In this day and age we were shocked to find a restaurant that was not understanding to a major food allergy. It makes a GF person feel bad enough about trying to figure out what to order. This made our dining party feel even worse."

  • "Loved our dinner at Cafe LaHaye! We both had the roast chicken with an artichoke heart stuffed with a mushroom mixture that was fantastic. Also loved the roasted beet salad. The owner came over to see how we liked the dinner (and we're locals) and also thanked us as we left. Classy place with outstanding food. They always have art on the walls. Not a real warm ambience but very pleasant."

  • "Menu is limited - when we arrived for our 8:30 reservation several menu items were sold out. This forced us to order things we ordinarily would not - but almost everything was delicious. My artichoke soup and pork chop were perfectly prepared. My husband's steak was fine - not exceptional. He opted out of the poached egg and hollandaise topping - just could not imagine doing that to beef - so maybe he missed the chef's intention. We chose La Haye because of the Food & Wine review - it was my husband's birthday and we wanted something special. As it turns out, we thought some of the other restaurants we wandered into during our 4 days in Sonoma were better. Nothing bad here. Our server was delightful- maybe we just expected too much."

  • "We are long time patrons of Cafe La Haye; probably two to three times a year; and they continue to impress - they are a true stand out in Sonoma - no offense to the other wonderful restaurants in Sonoma, but Cafe La Haye is on a different level and can easily compete with any restaurant in San Francisco or Yountville. Our food was excellent the service understated and while small, the place remains romantic. The desserts were superb, the wine list incredible (not large, but some wines you may never see elsewhere). We are so happy that Cafe La Haye has continued their tradition of being "the best restaurant in Sonoma." You won't be disappointed!"

  • "We had a wonder dinner on our anniversary at Cafe La Haye. The food was outstanding and the service was excellent. We had the pork chop and the sole. They were both delicious. We split cheesecake for desert and it was great. Good location in downtown Sonoma."

  • "If you want a superb meal (with no pre-dinner cocktail), you've found a great spot. The location is downtown Sonoma - with lots of shopping in surrounding storefronts. We scheduled our dinner at Cafe La Haye on a Tuesday nite - not knowing that there is a weekly celebration in downtown Sonoma including bands and other food and wares vendors. FUN people watching before or after dinner! Just don't count on that cocktail or martini you had your heart set on after all that wine tasting."

  • "My pasta dish was "al dente" which I do not like. The veal meatballs tasteless. The salad with hardly any dressing. My wife's chicken was OK. For the rather high price, this time it was a disappointment! "

  • "We had a delicious meal with great service that lived up to all our expectations. I had the special which was a delicious sole with kale and potatoes and my husband had the filet mignon and we split a crab cake to start. All our meals were excellent and the service was amazing. We arrived 30 minutes before our reservation and the owner made sure we could be seated as soon as we arrived. "

  • "The best item was carpaccio, paper thin beef with interesting toppings and flavors. Beet salad was good, but nothing special. The lamb meat balls w/ pasta dish was floating in a sea of olive oil. The meat balls were flat tasting and lacking flavor. The pork chop was served extremely rare. When you stuck your fork into it to cut it, you could barely pull out your fork; however, the flavors were good. I know it's popular to serve rare pork, but this was too rare and too tough. I've heard a lot about this restaurant. and it is highly rated, but I found it overrated. "

  • "I wanted someplace nice for my wife's birthday and was not disappointed. Although pricey everything was excellent, from the appetizers (crab cake, duck salad), main course (pork chop, stuffed game hen) and dessert (lemon cheesecake, chocolate silk cake). I will definitely return for a special occasion!"

  • "From all the places that we went on this three day vacation, this restaurant takes the gold. The owner greeted us, and the waitress sat us down. It was definitely a great experience. "

  • "For so many years now, Saul has continued to provide exceptional meals from his minuscule kitchen. His restaurant is always packed (but I don't mean crowded, the tables are nicely spaced) and getting a reservation is always a challenge. However, once in, the experience is wonderful. Every dish is so tasty and wonderfully presented. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed. The specials are wonderful so it's easy to have a totally different dinner every time you come."

  • "We visited Cafe La Haye for dinner for my wife's birthday. The service was impeccable, and the food amazing. We had the soft shell crabs and the duck risotto. Both were creative and cooked to perfection. We will definitely return to this restaurant in the future. "

  • "We have lived in Sonoma for 3 years, and we finally made it to Cafe La Haye with 2 other couples. I ordered the Petrale Sole, one of the specials, and was disappointed. It was dry and rather flavorless, but the others in our party loved the pork chop and the salmon. I will give the restaurant another try!"

  • "Foods was amazing. Host was gracious. Our waitress needed a little more skill in the area of customer satisfaction. We paid for two coekages fees and she only poured our wine twice throughout dinner. Had some attitude at times. Enduring customers that they are important is the key to the overall experience. "

  • "The manager/owner dealt beautifully with a loud and drunk guest by comping his wine and getting him out of the restaurant. He was very protective of his other guests and our fine dining experience."

  • "It was our 31st Anniversary so we were looking for special, but not over the top. Cafe La Haye in Sonoma is consistently excellent. I gave it only 4 stars because my wife's Ahi, which she request rare, came medium. Saul, the owner, immediately picked up that she was not happy, came over and offered to replace the dish. (Her Ahi was the last portion of the night) My wife didn't want anything else and accepted her fate... Saul comped the dessert to make amends. The service was excellent, it was a beautiful night and we had a good time. "
