  • "I took my teenage son to the restaurant to introduce him to French dining in the city. He enjoyed it very much and loved the food. The salad was delicious and so were the choice of entries! I wanted to try at least 3 of them! I had the duck and my son the steak! Sumptuous!"

  • "Always came for the great brunches. Finally came for diner last week.we thought the brunches were great. Diner is amazing. From the special salad to the most well prepared skate I ever had. Tasted my friends burger (my new place for th best in town) Wonderful selection for the cheese plate as well as great wine selection. They were totally packed and still had perfect service. A must go not only for brunch but a great diner."

  • "We had a new waitress and she let the steak and duck sit too long, so by the time it got to the table it was *very* well done. They had to remake it. But after that, everything was great!"

  • "I had two customers in from out of town, their first and only choice for diner. Casual, relaxed diner with amazing food and of course great service. Wonderful cassoulet, and mushroom ravioli with pencil asparagus.(WOW) The chocolate cake is perfect, and great cheese plate. Nice wine selection. A must go!"

  • "Cafe Joul never disappoints. Whether I'm in the mood for something light or more elaborate I can find it on the menu. On my last visit I had the salmon with kale and quinoa. It was outstanding. When asked how I wanted the salmon prepared, I left it to the chef and it was perfect, medium rare. The bibb lettuce salad is one of my favorites, fresh greens and grape seed dressing. My friend had the onion soup and said it was just the right blend of great soup and heavenly cheese. Her entree was the liver and she thought it was well prepared. And then we succumbed to the apple tart with ice cream. What a way to go! And we'll be back for more of everything."

  • "This restaurant got good reviews both on OpenTable and other sites, and lived up to its billing. The food was terrific, and my group - five family members getting together for the first time in months - felt very well-taken-care of. The service was smooth and the staff polite and helpful. I also loved the ambiance - small, initimate and cozy."

  • "Our first time at Cafe Joul, we chose it for Valentine's Day. The quiet ambiance, delicious food and friendly but professional service all contributed to a lovely dinner. The portions were just right; we had the sea bass (special) and the duck. Both had interesting vegetable combinations. Topping it off was a great mascarpone cheese cake with raspberries. We will definitely be back!"

We enjoyed their limited but very diverse and reasonable priced by the glass. The service was impeccable, we were never rushed and actually may have over stayed our time, catching up. • "This is a very small restaurant and the noise level was way too high. Hard to hear the people at your table and quite a challenge to get up from the table. Liked the food maybe lunch is better?"

  • "There's a reason why they've been around so long.constantly great food, service and wine. I've been coming here since the day they opened and never a bad experience in any way. I tried the cassoulet for the first time(usually content with my 4 favorites)now I have a fifth favorite. What an incredable dish that is. It's a must. Guess I have to come 5 times a week now. Great food, wine and service what more can you want when going out to eat."

  • "Wasn't sure what to expect as I pass it often but never tried. The food and service were great, we had duck, fish and chicken. Desserts were also great. They had a chestnut parsnip soup that was great. Service was very good considering there was only 1 waitress to serve the restaurant but many helpers to give out the food. I would highly recommend."

  • "This is a great local eatery on 1st at the 59th St Bridge. The welcome was warm, the ambience cozy, the food imaginative, delicious and creatively presented. Make reservations because it is delightfully small."

  • "I had never been before and found it very welcoming--despite the fact that in 24 hours my party went from five to four to three reservations. A short but adequate wine list. Quite good if not exceptional food. I had hoped to order the fish cassoulet, which was on the menu, but learned that they only make two a day. The waiter was very pleasant. All in all a very nice neighborhood place."

  • "We went to our favorite neighborhood bistro for a quiet evening meal. It was definitely quiet and the service was very good as usual but it ended there. It must have been an off night. The mussels were tiny and a bit tough, the hangar steak was VERY tough and "oily". The "chimichurri" sauce on the steak doesn't work in a French bistro? It's just too much oil and of course it also covered the haricot vert. Yuk. We go there for French food. Maybe because it was such a slow night there the regular chef was working or something? Saturday night though?"

  • "As always another great meal. I had the sweetbreads last nite which happens to be one of my favorite. I've never had better Anywhere!! It even tasted better with a nice wine that was recommend by a most knowledgeable and friendly manager. I don't want to forget the wonderful frise salad and finished with a perfect lemon tart. Service is friendly and comfortable. Been going since they opened and never disappointed A must go."

  • "We went on a Tuesday night and had a 7:45 reservation. Many of the restaurants we walked past on 1st avenue were relatively empty. Café Joul was a full house. The food is good, but the place is small and the tables are close together. The service was so-so. Too many people for the staff size. We witnessed one table where the couple kept asking about their food and then wound up having to take the food with them as they had a date. But, our food arrived timely. The staff was very apologetic to that couple. We also witness the hostess trying to get an elderly couple to vacate their table. They had just been sitting since we had walked in and finished our dinners. She told the hostess they were still waiting for their dessert."

  • "Great service and good food. Reservations for two at 8:30 - we were seated promptly. A nice wine list, even though it is not extensive. DH had the tomato burrata as an appetizer - it was delicious. I had the crab cake special. It was OK. The mussels (traditional) were plentiful and delicious. The lemon sole was also very good. The warm apple tart for dessert was great. Overall, very satisfied! Nice little place."
