Diner Reviews
  • "We really enjoyed our food choices and the great service from the waiter, who was able to answer all questions."

  • "Went there for the first time this past weekend and enjoyed the food and service very much. The ambience is great as well. Our server was very knowledgeable of the wine list and recommended a great bottle that paired well with the Snapper Udon and Scallops that we had. Reasonably priced and portions were perfect to fill."

  • "I had lunch twice and dinner once in the same week. For lunch, two of the best soups I've ever eaten (I'm not young - I've eaten a lot of soup!) and very good salads. My dinner was also exceptional- a slow-cooked pork dish. My partner had the Udon with Redfish. The fish was cooked to perfection, although the broth overwhelmed it a bit. (He DID eat every bite.) We felt both welcomed and at home in the restaurant. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly without being intrusive. One of the happiest discoveries at Café Josie was that we could hear each other speaking!"

  • "Good food and great service - have not eaten inside, but outdoor area is very pleasant."

  • "We had the fried oysters w/ horseradish aioli & Srirachi aioli, w/ sweet potato fris: perfect! We also had: grilled octopus w/ crispy potato which was really tasty and could have been great save for the octopus being overcooked and tough. We told the waiter who told the chef who also agreed that the octopus was tough. We had the soup of the day: scallop tom kha, a twist on the traditional Thai soup. It was very well executed and very good. We had one large plate: butternut squash curry. It was flavorful and I liked it, but my companion did not, thinking it a bit too light and dainty in taste."

  • "Love this place. Nice for a romantic evening or great for a group couples night out. Each aspect of the food served here has been well thought out and is well executed. Not sure how they acieved the depth of flavor in the beet salad, or how they got to the perfect crispiness on the tender juicy pork entree or how they nailed the delicate udon snapper dish. But am looking forward to going back for my next mouthwatering experience here!"

  • "I haven' been to Josie' since they opened but was pleased that the ambience was still quiet and quaint. the food menu and wine menu was very limited; the house salads lacked originality. It a longer than expected wait time just for 2 salads. The wine list was not very extensive but for a small cafe was acceptable; not so great was the less than half cup of wine served. Can't say I'll be back anytime soon."

  • "My sisters and I had the chance to dine at Josie's twice in the past week (visiting from NYC and California). I'm a NY snob/foodie, and was really blown away. The thought and care given to the locally-sourced menu was really impressive. The service was warm and friendly; I was struggling with the by-the-glass wine selection, and the waiter offered to let me taste several before I settled on a choice. The Brussels's Sprouts were perfect and so unusual. And the dessert of fois gras a remarkable thing of beauty. Also loved the short ribs and the beet salad; every dish was delicious! We highly recommend it and will definitely return whenever in Austin!"

  • "We came in for dinner on a Monday at 745. Promptly greated and seated at a great table. Our server was in training and did a fantastic job. She was very polite and friendly, around just enough without being around to much. The food was all fantastic we had the beet salad grilled octopus soup of the day the trout and the short rib. Every dish was great and our standout was the short rib. We will be back for sure and would recommend this place to everyone."

  • "romantic, classy but simple setting; great personal service and knowledgeable staff - just the right amount of attention. menu was a nice eclectic offering of vegetarian, elegant "comfort food", and epicurean. vegetables were all local farm to table and tasted fresh. All our meals were spectacular - butternut squash curry, braised short ribs and an entrée special of grilled duck breast."

  • "I had the most wonderful lunch at Cafe Josie's! Not only were the dishes amazing to taste but our server, Kory, made it memorable. He went above and beyond to make our experience exceptional. Hands down- the best brussel sprouts I've ever tasted! The scallops were delicious and dessert was just as great. Did I mention fantastic wine? This place is like a hidden jewel!!"

  • "Great ambiance with brick floors, high wood ceilings and generally charming. Nice for a special occasion, which happened to be a birthday for us. Server was great and food delicious. Portions were smaller but I happen to like smaller portions which are excellently prepared and presented. They have happy hour each day from 3-6 (not on weekends, just weekdays) so we were able to buy a bottle of wine for half. Only wine and beer though, but that was fine for us. I think it's a good place but a little hard to find and parking can be tricky. We did fine though."

  • "I had a co-worker join me for lunch. She said she hasn't been to Cafe Josie in years but boy we were glad we went. Lunch was light and perfectly served, the waitstatt attentive without interfering, left us to enjoy our time over lunch. We'll be back and I'll try it for dinner. Thanks"

  • "When we arrived we were seated at a corner table and went unnoticed by the wait staff for approximately 15 minutes. The manager finally noticed us and apologized profusely for their failing. He paid for our drinks and the rest of the meal went well. I had the scallops (delicious) and my wife had the pork shoulder which was also very good. The presentation was very nice and our waitress was quite attentive (after we were noticed)."

  • "The menu is continually changing at Cafe Josie. What fun. It's seasonal food, cooked expertly and served with care. I ordered a small plate of winter pickles. It was served in 3 shot glasses, with a small fork to dig it out. Three different flavors, all unexpected and delicious. The fish of the day was superb too, with new expected flavors and textures. The bill was reasonable for food that tasted that good. I'll be back."

  • "Ordered oysters and a cauliflower appetizer. They were both heavily battered and fried. Didn't like either one. There were 4 of us, we ordered the snapper with udon noodles, pork shoulder and a salmon dish. The size of the snapper in the bowl of noodles was so small that I ate it in 3 bites, the noodles and broth were tasty but for $30, I expected more. It was the same with the pork and salmon. We ordered a chocolate dessert that was excellent."

  • "This was our first time here, we had a little bit of a time finding it. The food was really good, the wine was perfect with our meal. The place is cozy and romantic. We will be back."

  • "We had heard that the food here was very good and, in that light, Cafe Josie delivered in spades. That said, the restaurant was very loud (our party of four could not hear the conversation without really raising our voices, which probably compounded the problem), the seating was not particularly comfortable (does the phrase wooden plank conjure an image?) and while our server was very nice and capable, he seemed naturally and annoyingly focused on Omega-3 levels when reviewing menu highlights and specials. But, when it came to our meals, everyone agreed the staff in the kitchen understood their jobs and executed beautifully."

  • "Menu had lots to offer - we started with the winter pickles, brussel sprouts and oysters, and then had the quail, butternut squash curry and pork shoulder. All were excellent, and added benefit, my daughter, who has Celiac Disease, had no problems finding gluten-free options. The server was also very familiar with that, and was able to easily steer us. Really great place. All the food was prepared perfectly, the service was very strong, and the decor was easy, current and adaptable to either a casual or dressier evening. Highly recommend."

  • "My parents came into town to visit for the weekend and wanted to try a restaurant in Austin that wasn't just a steakhouse so I got online and looked up cafe Josie and it was the perfect find. The food was amazing out server was very knowlageable and helpful with wine and the menu. All in all I will for sure be back it's a great spot for couples or groups moderately priced so you really get a lot of bang for your buck with how amazing the food is."

  • "We went two days in a row because the food and service was so good. Don't be put off if it looks quiet or by the first impression, ask to sit in the main room (with the bar) as it's more cozy. The menu changes often but if you get the chance the Brussel Sprouts, and the Octopus are amazing as are the Goat Ribs and the Scallops. The service is excellent and if you can time it right (3-6pm on Sat) you'll enjoy half price wine (all wines) making it the best happy hour in town :)"

  • "We've been going to Cafe Josie's for our anniversary dinner for the last three years, and we've never been disappointed. The food is terrific, prepared with care and taste. Our server, Roger, was friendly and helpful. The restaurant is small, intimate, and quiet."

  • "We had the 5 course tasting menu and it was fabulous. Salmon belly, a duck dish that reminded me of Carolina (cornbread, black eyed peas, and kale), scallops, and NY strip followed by a chocolate mousse dessert. The food was absolutely outstanding and our waiter Roger was extremely pleasant and professional. We will be making this place a habit. Cheers and happy new year!!!"

  • "We spent Christmas Eve at Cafe Josie - the food was wonderful, but portions are pretty small, so it turned out to be quite an expensive meal because you definitely need 3 courses to fill up. The service was excellent, the waiter knew answers to everything we asked him. Would recommend this restaurant for a special occasion."
