Cafe Gibraltar is a truly unique restaurant, owned and operated by Chef Jose Luis Ugalde and his wife Liam Durkee, it is a warm and welcoming space where every patron's positive experience is extremely valued. The menu is creative and expertly prepared by Jose Luis. He utilizes organic ingredients, primarily locally grown and raised, and creates dishes that honor their cultural origins, yet showcase his unique vision and artistry. The name Gibraltar is inspired by the Straights of Gibraltar, which are the gateway to the Mediterranean. Jose Luis creates cuisine that represents cultures along the entire rim of the Mediterranean. The seasonal menu may feature dishes from France, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Macedonia, Greece and any of the countries of North Africa. Check out our website for current menus featuring the bounty of our local farms and ranches and the fresh bounty of the sea. Cafe Gibraltar only utilizes fresh seafood, and we often get our fish straight off of the boat.Continued

  • "Love this place! The location provides a perfect view of the ocean, so beautiful on a summer night. The menu is amazing, original and well designed. I highly recommend the rabbit, if it's on the menu. The ambience transports you to the south of Spain, Mediterranean with Moorish influence. A musician playing Spanish guitar music adds to the mood. The staff are all so friendly, and very knowledgeable about the sourcing of the food and the preparation and ingredients. Perfect date night locale!"

  • "We stopped here based on reviews on a scenic drive from San Francisco to Monterey, CA and we were not disappointed. The chef takes standard cuisine and ramps it up significantly. My granddaughter had a wonderful salad with grilled chicken, and I had an eggs benedict on crab cakes with avocado... which was outstanding (the Hollandaise was great !). We fished off with one of the best lemon tarts we've ever tasted (see pictures)."

I took my wife to his and his wifes cafe for our 30th year anniversary because of the food, the drive and how he spoke to me on the phone. We did not know what to expect, it being our first time, but as soon as I came in the door Jose and I waved at each other. Savannah was our waitress who made my wife and I feel comfortable right away and that is important to us since we are from different ethnic groups. Jose even took time to talk with me. Jose served my bread hot the way I like it, my wife enjoyed the pheasant and had delicious lamb. For desert Jose made us a special anniversary bread pudding, with ice cream, carmel and rasberry topping that was from paradise to come."

  • "This place turned my husband and I away on our 10 year wedding anniversary celebration dinner. The chef flat out told us "no" after we were only a few minutes late to our reservation. The staff are rude and a bunch of liars. The server who initially came up to us said she couldn't find our reservation and said the restaurant was closed. The chef apparently claims he called me but my phone records do not show a call from him. On top of this, the owner who is married to the chef sent me a facebook message lying saying that we arrived 15-20 minutes late for our reservation. Sorry but your lies do not justify your rude and abhorrent behavior. Stay away from this place!"

  • "We chose Cafe Gibraltar because of all the rave reviews. We will never go back. I ordered the Hamal Ma Harissa, a lamb entree described in the menu as served with 7 vegetables. I was served a plateful of meat with no veggies save for garbanzo beans in the brown gravy. My husband ordered the Khoresh, which was a vegetable stew so overcooked that it was an unappetizing mush. He could not finish it. Thank goodness for the bread. Both of us really appreciate fine food. Our experience at this restaurant was very disappointing. We always tip 20-25%, but coughing up 15% for this food was tough."

I was SHOCKED that Yelp reviewers have rated this place so high when some of our meal wasn't even edible! Everything seemed to be deepfried beyond recognition and the presentation was dismal. To make matters worse, when a server asked us how it was and we expressed disappointment, she did NOTHING."

  • "We drove here from Oakland thinking because it's a Zagat-rated restaurant it would be off-the-charts. We ordered the crab benedict and french toast. The benedict was good, but it didn't have an english muffin so it was just rich with nothing to soak up the yolk. The french toast was superb, but a very small portion. The coffee was excellent and the service was perfect, but those aren't things I'd drive back for. If you're passing through, it's worth stopping in. Maybe it's better for dinner."

Reminded us of pre-cooked re-warmed dishes. which I am sure they do not do yet the thought of it leaves a bad aftertaste in your moth. Dessert (bread pudding) was nothing special. However, environment was fantastic. Romantic and quiet, but also accommodates groups up to 5. Try to secure a booth seat if you can - that singlehandedly makes the experience. Good selection of wines and fairly priced."

  • "My husband and I found this great restaurant while staying at a local B&B. The owner of the B&B recommended it. Back then it was a tiny place and we were told to go early because it gets packed! Cafe Gibraltar instantly became one of our most favorite places to dine. So delicious every time! Always wonderful service as well. Try it out and you'll be back again and again. I recommend the booths in the back."
