Diner Reviews
  • "We have eaten here before. The lunch is reasonably priced - a good value. The tomato soup was spicy and delicious and the empanadas were great. The crepa for dessert was also very good. If you are at the Museum and looking for a good Mexican meal, I rev omen this place. The Margarita was also very good!"

  • "I visited Cafe Frida on Tuesday and left thinking, it was just "okay." The happy hour specials are a nice draw -- I got the $2.25 Tacos and $6 Sangria, but even those were just "okay." The guacamole was good, but a bit chunky and the rice and beans lacked quite a bit of flavor. I can't say I would never visit again, but it's definitely not on the top of my list of places to go."

  • "Despite running late for our reservation, we were seated promptly. The seating was a little cozy, but we were able to admire our neighbors' food selections before deciding on our own. The trio of salsas is a great deal! The hot habanero salsa was too spicy for me, but my boyfriend loved it. I enjoyed the chicken fajitas and he enjoyed his mole chicken, and the margaritas were strong and delicious. We will definitely be back!"

  • "This was a total mess, we are done with this company after visiting both locations more times than I can count. On this occasion I made a Saturday night reservation at Amsterdam and 97th St via a link on the restaurant website. Tho confirmed that day, we showed up to learn they'd changed hands, was no longer called Frida & the res was now at the orig location on Columbus Ave. No apologies, no offer to seat us, no attempt to keep us loyal, return neighborhood customers. As my party's host, I didn't have another option at 9:00 on a weekend night so we hoofed it down to 77th St, Food was fine, but still no apology so tasted bitter. This is unheard-of in any industry: you take care of return customers, not switch them up & ignore them."

  • "Cafe Frida was just ok. The gauc and margs were really good - it provided false expectations for the rest of the food. The enchiladas were bland yet the pepper and onion side was soo hott."

  • "Excellent Guacamole. Delicious Margaritas - loved the chili salt edge. Entrees were tasty. I look forward to coming back to visit and explore more of the menu. Thanks for a delicious meal served by fun and attentive staff."

  • "I enjoyed the menu options for the dinner because of the mix of traditional mexican dishes, and the more Mexican-American dishes as well, so there is a great spectrum for foods to eat. The drinks were delicious! My Lady enjoyed the hibiscus margarita and I enjoyed the Pacifico Beer. The best part was when a friend asked for the beer options, and the response was " we only have imported beers"..which made the experience even better!"

  • "The food is fine, not great. Nice mole sauce and Guac, that's about it. Marg's not amazing. The horrible percussive music coming out of tiny speakers was not appreciated and the too dark upstairs, where you have no idea what you're eating, was strange. But it looked reasonably popular on an early Saturday night, if that means anything."

  • "Cafe Frida is a great alternative to Shake Shack if you're looking for a comfortable place to have lunch with your kids after going to the natural history museum. I was delighted to be in a place that was kid-friendly but not stuffed full of other families with small kids. My kids are fine with spicy food, but if yours are not, no worries - they offered to make the dishes plain and were very accomodating about a few idiosyncracies."

  • "I lived in Mexico for an year and half and often find that Mexican restaurants in NYC are too acclimatize to America tex-mex taste. When I walked into Cafe Frida, I expected the same. But surprise, surprise, their menu did offer some traditional mexican food I would get in DF. I really enjoyed it. Just wish tables were more bigger and the decor more updated. But food wise, want to go back real soon."

  • "I went for Sunday brunch. We both loved the food. I had the Poblano omelette, and my friend had the huevos rancheros. Portions were a reasonable size, and the quality was very good. The coffee was a bit weak though. The only criticisms are that we had to ask twice to get our coffee refilled. The restaurant was busy, so it is at least understandable. Also, we were eventually asked to leave because they needed the table. That is less minor, but the manager was apologetic. I do think that is poor policy though. That might make me reconsider going back - generally if you pay for a meal out the experience is part of what you are paying for. I want to have a relaxed meal and not be rushed out, and this ended things on a down note."

  • "I remember frequenting Cafe Frida 5 years ago and remembered how great the food was. Maybe dinner is still great but brunch was just OK. Service was good but they definitely rushed to get our appetizer plates off the table - just to make us wait another 20-30 minutes for our entrees - too busy that day for the kitchen to keep up."

  • "Deafening, tables squeezed together like sardines, all the waitstaff in a Greta big hurry. I ordered my steak rare and it came well done. Avoid."

  • "Food was good. Service was good. Very very loud though and we were in the balcony and it was hot and very loud."

  • "Loud, crazy Saturday night place to eat with a wide variety of good food. Lot's of choices and a good, full bar. Not too spicy, but very flavorful. Good guacamole and a unique tortilla soup."

  • "Really good menu and the food was superb. The Margherita was a touch small and the noise level a bit overwhelming. But I would go back for the food and look for a time when it was less noisy."

  • "We were very excited, however the service was lackluster...dinner and guac came out at the same time...ridiculous...food was good though"

  • "This was not my first time at Cafe Frida, and the food lived up to memory. It is authentic, flavorful Mexican food with a decidedly upscale bent. My only complaint was the hostess, who rudely didn't want to seat us when we arrived early for our reservation, even though half the restaurant was empty. She put as at a table in the enclosed patio (in December!) in the glare of the next door bodega's security light. Being inside the main body of the restaurant would have made the ambiance 100%. Our waiter, on the other hand, was great, as were the drinks and entrees."

  • "The passion fruit margarita was very good....ordered 2 then got the bill $14 each welcome to NYC! The Ceviche was good, small portion. Fajitas were unflavorful, un impressive."

  • "This place was really good at everything. The drinks very good, the guacamole outstanding, the service really good, the rest of the food really good, the atmosphere really good, really affordable. Just really good. I would recommend this to anyone."

  • "I went here on a date. The food was amazing, loved menu, staff was great! The only thing that was annoying was I couldn't hear my date. It is a loud restaurant due to ambiance and small space. I suggest sitting up front near windows as there are less tables so close so probably much quieter! Other than noise, I loved it!"

  • "Cafe Frida has become our neighborhood place. They are always so friendly when we come in and very accommodating. Bartenders are extremely welcoming (remember us), as are all of the employees. Guacamole is delicious as is the enchilada suiza. A must for the UWS! We prefer the Columbus location to the Amsterdam location because it is more intimate and we've found that the staff is friendlier."

  • "We were a group of 6 and we all enjoyed our food. The only complaint--its just too loud. Even when speaking to the person adjacent, we needed to repeat ourselves several times. But other than that, great place."

  • "My first time at Cafe Frida was an outstanding experience, and I'll certainly go back whenever I'm in the neighborhood. The food was delicious---I just ordered 2 appetizers and a drink, and they were lovely (though they didn't really challenge the chefs). The small, cozy room was a delight, and our server was outstanding welcoming and professional."

  • "I grew up in Texas, going to Mexico fairly often as a kid. The food at Cafe Frida is outstanding. I'm just glad I stumbled upon it walkin down colombus avenue one night. The prices are NOT cheap, and you have to pay for chips and salsa, but the cheese is authentic and the flavors are great. If I want a treat, I head on over. It can get busy, though, so a reservation isn't a bad idea!"

  • "Upscale restaurant offering more genuine Mexican and Spanish food. Very small restaurant, so reservations are essential. Menu is great. Have dined here several times and have always enjoyed the entrées. Guacamole is a must as appetizer."
