Diner Reviews
  • "In an area where one would not expect anything special, Cafe Du Soleil stands out as eminently worthy. The ambiance is convincing. The accueil is friendly. The food is a cut above. And the service more than matches the rest, Go!"

  • "It was 5pm and the crowds had not yet descended. The mood was peaceful and relaxed. The salmon was rare as ordered and the veal sausages bursting their seams with flavor. The wine was six dollars but tasted like twenty. Everything worked. The chocolate mousse we brought home was a delicious reminder of our Sunday Soleil."

  • "A cute setting and ambience. Went for Sunday brunch. The menu was very limited and overpriced. It felt like a bit of a ripoff. Food was decent, but would not go back."

  • "At brunch on Saturday, an order of eggs Florentine arrived with a piece of plastic in the spinach. To the restaurant's credit, they remade the order but didn't offer an apology or a refund. They could have provided a muffin or something small while we waited for the order to be replaced and the rest of our party ate their brunch, which would have gotten cold. In addition, the wait for coffee, drinks, and check was endless. Are they understaffed or just inefficient...not going back."

  • "Great UWS French bistro serving well prepared traditionals. Friday night jazz only enhances the vibe."

  • "This restaurant isn't bad as French restaurants in NYC go. We dine there several times a year. Starters and main courses taste good and are well proportioned. Desserts, as with most restaurants in this city--including the French--are weak. This time we had dinner. But they have a lovely steak sandwich platter at lunchtime, which goes well with a glass of wine on a sunny summer's afternoon."

  • "We're always happy to take new people to Cafe Du Soleil. The restaurant is always welcoming and fast. The food is delicious and the staff is friendly and knowledgable. I never have anything other than a great time at Cafe Du Soliel."

  • "A great restaurant for adults. The noise level was moderate and you can actually hold a conversation without raising your voice. Service was very good. Food was good but I'd go back for the ambiance."

  • "Cafe du Soliel is the classic French bistro on the UWS with great food, friendly, attentive service, comfortable atmosphere and frequent live music events. My wife and I frequently go there for that informal, yet kind of special occasion feeling."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for what was intended to be a nice valentine's day dinner, however, the service turned out to be a horrible experience. First no server came over to our table for roughly ten minutes. Finally one came over out of breath. We did not receive the special menus until after. I went to order the short ribs and asked how they were. The server made a face and then recommended the braised rabbit. When the main course came out the braised rabbit was extremely tough and bland. There was no taste to what is usually a very tender dish. The experience was very uncomfortable. The manager never came to check on us and I could see the manager scolding the server. The rest of food was great, however, I cannot recommend this place."

  • "Visit this neighborhood gem for a quick trip to Provence on the UWS. Good for romantic and every day occasions - lovely food, service and ambiance."

  • "I've been here a few times for brunch and dinner, and I've enjoyed the food in this lovely French restaurant. Service is excellent. I have been seated even before my full party arrives, and I was able to enjoy a drink at my table as I waited. The pancakes I had for brunch were light and airy. For dinner, I've eaten the salmon with mashed potatoes and clarified butter--a perfect serving size, and the olives in the potatoes were a great touch. The steak and fries are a great French bistro tradition, and they are prepared classically here as well. Lovely atmosphere, and really a neighborhood gem. If you are in the upper upper west side, this is a great place to dine."

  • "Forced by the icy weather to stay in the neighborhood, we tried Cafe du Soleil again after a long hiatus. It has improved. Food had declined for a while, but the Salade du Chef was good, and the Moules Frites Mariniere were excellent -- small, tender sweet mussels in tasty wine broth, hot, crispy frites. Wait staff could not have been more pleasant. My one problem with the place, and the reason we stopped going there a few years ago and will continue to avoid it, is the noise. When we arrived, pleasant music was playing softy in the background, and we happily began to converse in normal voices. Gradually the music was cranked up till everyone in the place was shouting and our voices were hoarse. Why, oh why? So we'll continue to stay away."

  • "This is one of my favorite French restaurants. The mussels in garlic/white wine broth is my favorite, although everything I've had here has been delicious. Service is phenomenal. We always come here when we want to have a nice dinner in our neighborhood."

  • "It's a large, energetic restaurant (I'd say it sits about 60) that was tastefully decorated and had a singer and band next to the bar. The band played jazz standards and was quite good. The music and ambient conversation meant that we had to raise our voices slightly to be heard - that that was really no problem. Food was excellent (I had the steak onglette and pomme frittes) as were the excellent appetizers (I recommend the mussels).. Service was impeccable. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a celebration. Things quieted down after 10 (we stayed until 11:30) so if you'd like things on the quieter side make your reservation later than ours."

  • "An accommodating neighborhood place with decent food, fair prices and reasonable service. As many such places, the noise level can be high, but that is the nature of these places."

  • "Great brunch place. Food was excellent. Servers did not rush you out and let you linger."

  • "Warm atmosphere with a welcoming host and very good service. Fortunately we went on a dreary Sunday evening early so the restaurant wasn't full so the noise level was low. The restaurant is pretty. The food was very good. A little too much salt in the fish soup but tasteful. Moderately priced with an interesting prix fix. Definitely worth going back to regularly."

  • "Ambiance was a good replication of a Parisian Rive Gauche bistro; food was adequate, management tried hard to make a busy New Year's day go smoothly. Our particular waiter wasn't quite up to the game but other staff members filled in. Overall, as a first timer, I'd probably go back. Our daughter was less impressed but the rest of the family was fine with the food."

  • "Made a reservation here for New Year's Eve. The $45 prixe fixe option had excellent choices. The food was great and the service was attentive. The restaurant was very loud, but that was expected on New Year's Eve."

  • "Sunday night fix-price dinner $25 for 3 courses - appetizer, entree, dessert. We were pleasantly surprised at the big portions and flavorful food. The salmon was done very nicely and the creme brule had a tasty sugar top! Nice dinner."

  • "First time at Café du Soleil. Food is definitely worth the price. Very reasonable. Service was great. Slow night and we got to talk to our waiter. He is from Algeria. Very interesting. We will for sure be back soon."

  • "This favorite spot is away from the maddening crowds. It has a comfortable and cheery decor. The staff is terrific. All are European and most helpful. Francoise is the host with a most charming welcome. The staff is small and energetic. The Norwegian Eggs Benedict was fabulous. My son loved the Croque Madame (plesae excuse the spelling ) The chocolate mousse was pervfect; not too sweet and the strwberry and cream cut in perfectly. The small bar is a treat, as are Carlos and Maxime."

  • "We were a group of 7 -- had out reservation, promptly seated, attentive service, nice place for a friendly get-together, and loved the thoroughly French atmosphere. Wish the food were better than merely good, but it was definitely good. $70 including tax and tip and my share of the wine (this was on the prix fixe, so could have been worse). Not many choices for fine dining in this part of the Upper Upper West Side (that's two "uppers"), and this is one of the best. Wish I could be more enthusiastic. I enjoyed the evening and might be back."

  • "I've been here for breakfast a number of times and it's always reliable and delicious. The coffee is truly superb. Everything is expertly cooked, nicely presented and well served by the professional staff. You really can't go wrong."

  • "The owner, chef and waiter(s) were solicitous and gracious. Food was robust French bistro quality with some nuanced offerings to spice up the menu. All in all, an enjoyable evening. We'll be back."

  • "Three of went for dinner on Saturday night. Pleasant greeting and prompt attention by waitstaff. However, I ordered the fish soup and they brought onion soup instead. Another member of our party ordered hangar steak and had to send it back because it was so stringy - a mess, really, no real meat at all. This occasioned a visit by the manager, who seemed to disagree with her decision, but eventually brought a sirloin instead. It was delivered rare instead of medium rare as requested. She finally decided to just eat around the rarest parts. My husband had the cassoulet and rated it "meh". On the positive side, the endive and roquefort salad was excellent, as was the fish soup. The tart tatin was also fine."

  • "After a short downturn, Cafe Du Soleil is back on track. The kitchen has gotten its act together, and it is again a pleasure to dine there."

  • "We actually live a couple of blocks away and we tried it for Brunch on Sunday. Our conclusion: a good walking distance option for Benedict Eggs. Food quality and portion size were good -but nothing spectacular. Service was mixed... some people had great attitude while others didn't. We will probably go back."

  • "The turkey dinner was very good. The turkey was not that warm. I think some gravy would have made it more tasty. I wanted to send it back but my wife was hungry and did not want to wait. The salad was over priced for what we got...tasted great...but $14 for a small salad? $8 for a glass of wine? These are of course west side NY prices. The service was great. They even made me a different kind of stuffing. The dinner was reasonably priced."
