Diner Reviews
  • "Always a great spot for special days. We enjoy Easter there year after year. They do a fixed menu because of the large number of people to bbs served but there are many good choices. Service was fast and attentive, despite the hubbub. After all, there is an Easter Parade and street festival going on right outside the door. There is outdoor seating too if you want to see the action up close. On regular nights, try the mussels. "

  • "It was my sisters birthday and I made reservations at a different restaurant but after asking around based on the Open Table reviews- I made a last minute decision to change to Cafe Des Amis. Not only did they find room- but they found us the best table and made us feel like it was a special occasion. Just the extra attention from the manager to the waitstaff changed the entire experience. The food was tasty, the drinks were just perfect and they even made special accommodations for my gluten allergy. Cafe Des Amis made dinner into an event to be remembered- making me the hero and my sister the star. Thanks!"

  • "Out of town guests have heard about San Francisco and it's wonderful restaurants -- Des Amis is a real treat for them --the SF ambiance on the street, the French menu, reasonable prices and super attentive staff make for a memorable dining experience and family gathering."

  • "We had a large group of visitors and locals, kids and adults, all who appreciate exceptional food and service. Cafe des Amis proved to be memorable on all counts. The dining rooms are lovely, and there is a zinc bar. We had a cozy and convivial oval booth for our group, and it was easy to carry multiple conversations across the table or just one. Our waiter was a welcome, attentive, yet non-obtrusive presence. I usually tip 20% but gave him 25%. We ordered oysters for starters, and even the east coast oyster snobs at the table were impressed with the quality and presentation. The Nutella beignets were decadent! The soft omlettes were delicious. Everyone left the table and the meal happy, satisfied, but not stuffed. Just blissed out!"

  • "Love going to Cafe Des Amis, consistent in the quality of the food and service, and I can walk to get there. It reminds me of Paris!!! Delia"

  • "What is the point of making a reservation if you are seated 30-40 minutes late?"

  • "Love coming here. It's the only restaurant I go to in this area. Service is fantastic, food is supergood and atmosphere is awesome. You can't go wrong. I like the fact that it doesn't feel as trendy as the other restaurants on Union or Chestnut."

  • "Cafe des Amis fit the bill when it came to a good low-key brunch place. Our group of 6 had a cozy booth on the loft level to ourselves, which provided a private, quiet atmosphere for us to catch up in. Everyone liked their food; the burger was a popular choice. I myself liked the croque madame. Mimosas for $5 each was a decent price too and helped make the birthday brunch festive. Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a classy yet casual brunch experience in the Marina."

  • "Been here twice. A little noisey and service a little slow, but food is quite good. The French onion soup is worth the trip."

  • "The Spruce group spent a bundle on this beautiful French restaurant facimile. I m in the neighborhood often and wish it were better. Recent crab cakes were overcooked and "blackened" which means weren't fresh. Everything tired and uninspired. A recent visit for Sunday coffe and pastry had three staff members offering us water, bread "while you wait for your server". How is that o.k?"

  • "Went here for the pre fixe Valentine's Day dinner and left feeling pretty disappointed and ripped off. The exact opposite feelings you want to have on Valentine's Day when you've just spent $300 on a dinner. Bad service and food was really disappointing. Reseated because of wobbly tables (replaced their normal tables with rented ones, per the server). First course was salad - sent one back because it was half the size of the other. Really disappointed in the rib eye steaks. They cut what would have been a normal steak in half so it was half the thickness. The wine pairings weren't great and also weren't synchronized with the meal. These guys made an economic decision to serve a sub par meal in the name of profit."

  • "Love the brunch vibe here. Server was great, food was great, bloody marys were great as usual. The hostess was unfriendly and sort of rude, especially considering it was not busy when we arrived. I had requested a table outside or in the window and there were several available when we arrived, but I was told those were for people who had made reservations (which I thought is what I had done here). Then she told us she could seat us inside and move us outside as soon as a table was available, but she never did. I've come here before and I'll come here again, but I'm still not sure how to go about reserving an outdoor table through any other means than this."

  • "It was a pre fixed menu for Valentines Day. Choices were good, but not great. I had the ribeye. It was moderately dry in the center. My wife had scallops. They were decently sweet. Oysters were good. Wine selection was also good. I would go again for a full menu, not a pre fixed."

  • "I like to go here for brunch. The service is always really friendly and attentive. The bartender makes great cocktails, including the zombie! The food is always delicious. It's simple French bistro and they do a very good job of it."

  • "This is as good as a French Bistro gets! We loved the food, service and ambience. It was a 90 minute vacation. Our waiter, Nick, was kind enough to email the recipe for the butter lettuce salad dressing!"

  • "I took my daughter and niece to Cafe Des Amis for Valentine's day. We had a great time, even though the place is quite loud. There was a fixed price menu given that it was Valentine's day, but there were good and vaired choices in each of the three courses--that offered something for every one. They served additional appetizers if you wanted so we started with oysters. Our server was attentive, friendly and efficient and we didn't feel rushed even though we ate early and there certainly was a reservation for our table later. The wine list is very good with a good mix of California and French, sparkling, white, red. We chose a good bottle from St. Emilion as we were in a french bistro after all. Very good. All in, an excellent evening!"

  • "We ate dinner at cafe des Amis on valentines day. The pre fixe was $75 for 3 courses, and the restaurant did not deliver - rib eye was so-so, salad basic, and the dessert average. Would not return for a pre fixe there - way over-priced."

  • "Whe arriving, the table they had set aside was unacceptable. We had requested quiet and aginst a wall. They tried to give us what was possibly the worst location possible. We wited for a while and they opened the upstairs and it was wonderful. Once that was corrected, the food, timing and service were great. We were with a couple we had not seen in a while and they allowed us plenty of time to drink our wine and between courses and with our coffee."

  • "A cute, classic restaurant with very average food. Not bad. Nothing was "bad" about it. But nothing was particularly good about it either. I will say - I like the bar. I think it's a great place in Cow Hollow to grab a glass of wine or a coffee with friends."

  • "I had the mussle curry two times before recently and this third time was very much more spicy. The first time the curry was very slight and super. Also it was a small watery sauce which seemed like it should be. This last time the sauce was thick and too spicy for me."

  • "Great food, great restaurant, the service on my food allergy to gluten was a little off. Explanation on what was in our dishes were great yet he didn't make the jump onto the entree and it had to be reordered without gluten."

  • "The Cafe's Brunch menu and the food its menu accurately described was excellent and enjoyed by our family of 4. The hostess who greeted us with our Open Table reservation could have been a little more warm and friendly, since we were celebrating a birthday. We had one issue, which we later called to discuss directly with the Gen. Manager, Stephen, was resolved and corrective action was graciously taken to our satisfaction."

  • "Had a great time and food and service was excellent. Well attended too! My only complaint was we didn't save room for dessert, but the was our fault. Could control ourselves a head of time. Would definitely go back."

  • "We had trout almandine and the burger. Delish! Ambiance is very nice and the help were very accommodating. We walked over and were a little late as we made a wrong turn. Called and they were happy to hold our table. We would definitely go again! Whole menu looked good"

  • "The food is fantastic and the designers of the space did a great job. Besides that, this place can't keep up with the better restaurants in the area...ones that have fantastic service and quick turnaround which this place clearly lacks."

  • "We went to eat lunch here during Dine About Town. I ordered off the menu and my husband ordered the prix fixe menu. His pumpkin soup and lamb were delicious. My duck confit was terrific. I didn't enjoy the fried calamari as much as I do as other restaurants, but it was good. The wait staff were excellent and friendly. The restaurant is spacious. My husband and I don't drink much alcohol, so we didn't order anything from the bar. I would like to go back for dinner."

  • "I came here when it first opened a few years ago and was not impressed. My husband loves Cafe Des Amis so we started coming more often and swore in the last year it got so much better. Sure enough, I asked and the chef changed about a year/year and a half ago. The food has been excellent. Service great! Love 1/2 off wine bottle night. Wish they had a larger selection of glasses of red wine. Overall, this is our reg date night place and I love it. Hope they stay for a long time."

  • "I have enjoyed Cafe des Amis since it opened. This dinner on January 7 was fabulous. Everything has gotten better, Tuesday night 50% off wine by the bottle is a great bonus. The pork loin was terrific and the potato/leek soup with puff pastry a real treat. Our server had a good knowledge of the menu and wine list as well as a sparkling personality."

  • "The ambiance, fireplace and congenial service makes this restaurant a keeper for me. We had a large group (8 People) and our server was able to handle the generally fussy requests of our group with good humor and efficiency."

  • "Nice dining experience right in the neighbourhood were we stayed, in walking distance. In every way a classic French brasserie/bistro or bar tabac experience. You know what to expect but nothing here is surprising or spectacular (althought the oysters were very good)."
