Diner Reviews
  • "Café Deluxe is nice enough. I am not sure why someone builds a new restaurant with so little thought to noise control. It was absolutely deafening. The waiter, Jesty, was very nice. But either he or the bar tender needs some training in drink orders. My dining companion ordered a Vodka Collins ( which is a Tom Collins made with Vodka). The waiter brought a martini of some sort. She ended up with a tall glass of some lemony concoction. But a little class in classic drinks would be good. I guess more people are ordering contemporary drinks so bartenders are not learning the classics."

  • "The neighborhood really needs a place like Cafe Deluxe but unfortunately service and food are very average. It was disappointing"

  • "Cafe Deluxe does not disappoint! The food is excellent and the service is very good. The massive windows open onto the intersection of M and 23rd Street providing a never ending source of people watching and motion. Even during the hot and sticky summer days in DC with the windows open, you still manage to stay air-conditioned cool somehow, making your window on the world that much more enjoyable. In the West End I can think of no better place to grab a great meal!"

  • "The service was poor. The waiter took a long time to come to the table after we were seated. Then a long time to bring us water The food was not that great. The quality had gone down since we were last there for brunch three weeks ago. The cocktails were very watered down"

  • "This is a local chain restaurant, but I was expecting better. The food was totally average, and the service was friendly and attentive but special requests (i.e. bacon on a burger) were not actualized. The restaurant wasn't busy so this wasn't the reason for the lack of attention to detail nor the dullness of the food. It's overpriced for the quality of the food. I wouldn't return."

  • "Food was great; wasn't expecting the noise levels though; there is a live DJ so you have to take that into consideration. It was trendy and modern, and loud. If that's what you like, this is the place. Would recommend to a friend - with a caveat about how loud it is."

  • "While the food and service was great, the bartender needs help. We had to send our drinks back. This is the third time we have had to do that."

  • "Menu offered a wide variety at reasonable prices. Three of the four enjoyed our meals. Server started clearing while one of the party was still eating (a pet peeve of mine) and then started talking about desserts. We told him to wait until all had finished. It took a very long time before he returned with dessert menus. Coffee was tepid and tasted stale. We couldn't find our waiter so asked another to contact him about the coffee. Another very long wait to give him our request and then finally to get fresh coffee."

  • "I've frequented the original location of Cafe Deluxe many times over the years. It is a decent, mid-priced restaurant with enough options on the menu to suit everyone. not mind-blowing food but perfectly fine. only negative at this new location for this meal: bitter (perhaps burnt beans) cappuccino and the bar area is very loud so if you want to talk to your dining companions get a table towards the back of the restaurant."

  • "We were excited Cafe Deluxe opened in the West End, and we were not disappointed with our first visit! Food is great, service good, and the huge windows open onto a vibrant view of M and 22nd streets. Although it is asdocuated with a Hotel, it is not a typical hotel restaurant. We'll be back, a lot!"

  • "We went for brunch. Both meals had room temp / cold breakfast potatoes. The crab cakes Benedict had one well poached egg and one with a solid yoke. If we'd have had more time, both plates woukd have gone back. We also had to ask multiple times to have our waters refilled."

  • "First time at this location. Dined inside with open windows, which provided a breezy, outdoor casual ambiance. Salads were delicious. Service attentive, friendly and prompt."

  • "Great new option for lunch in the West End. On a perfect weather day they leave open the windows - a nice touch when you've been cooped up in an office all morning."

  • "The service is really exceptional at this Cafe Deluxe. And the food is consistently excellent. We had two wonderful starter salads and then the salmon main course and the tuna tacos. Everything was great. This is a wonderful addition to our West End neighborhood."

  • "Cafe de Luxe is great for pre- movie or post-movie dinner. It's just a few steps from Westend Cinema, which shows great movies, usually non-mass market. We were very happy with our choice, and reservation via Open Table. My grilled Salmon on a bed of orzo and asparagus was delicious and my dinner companion's lamb shank with vegetables was very tasty (real Man dish). No room for dessert. Prices and generous portions, compared to similar restaurants in the area, were reasonable. Will definitely return. This is a great place for people watching since the windows are wall-sized and open on one side during good weather."

  • "Good addition to the neighborhood, and the food was better than we expected for a chain with the name "Cafe Deluxe." Although it's certainly not worth a trek from outside the neighborhood, it's a solid spot for brunch if you want to stay local. My only observation is that the service was inattentive and not very helpful in choosing among options on the menu. Also, my french fries were completely cold--evidence of poor planning/coordination between kitchen staff and servers."

  • "The food and service are quite good, but the noise is horrible. Because I almost had to yell at my dinner partners, I doubt if I will return to Cafe Deluxe - West End."

  • "My daughter and granddaughter joined me for a pre-theater dinner the other day. We were all very satisfied with our choices which were grilled salmon, grilled ahi tuna and Cobb salad. They let me choose an extra veg instead of a pasta side. They were extra careful about our entrees being cooked our way. Perfect. Great service but it wasn't too busy at that time-5:45. Would definitely return."

  • "I'm so happy to have this new restaurant in West End! The menu and wine list are terrific. Unfortunately the service is a little spotty as they are getting started. I keep going with the hope things will even out."

  • "The food was excellent, but the waiter brought my appetizer (a salad) after the other 3 people in my party had already finished theirs. My father-in-law had also ordered an extra side dish but the waiter never brought it, and we didn't bother to say anything because he just didn't seem to have it together. But he was very nice, and the whole staff was nice, and the food was really good (the trout special, the lamb sandwich, etc.)."

  • "The apple, brie and leek flat bread and the crispy goat cheese salad were a fantastic lunch. Also had a cocktail that was something like a bellini that was terrific. Delish!"

  • "A new restaurant in the West End. New wait staff working hard to do a good job. Very pleasant atmosphere and service. Food was good. Maybe parking issue could be addressed as it is a part of the hotel."

  • "I ate there for lunch, but will definitely go back for Happy Hour and Dinner. The food and service were great!!"

  • "Man, I like the one in upper northwest. Sadly, this one delivered orders missing sides, cold entrees, and poor service when we pointed out what was missing. Bummer since my office is 2 blocks away, but - c'est la vie. Save your aggravation and cross the street to Westend Bistro. They get orders and service right. Yknow. The basics."

  • "Service was slow. We ordered cocktails to begin, and I had to ask two waiters where our drinks were. My wife wanted Campari but the restaurant bar didn't have it. My wife's hamburger was tasteless. She did like the fries. My grilled chicken with penne was okay. "

  • "This was my second visit to Cafe Deluxe. I realize they haven't been open very long, but some of the same issues that we experienced on our first visit have not been improved on. The skill of the bartenders is shaky, at best. A dry martini was almost all vermouth. A slightly dirty martini was almost all olive brine. And, the bartenders had no clue how to make an aperol spritz. The wait staff is new and inexperienced, but they have a great attitude and are trying their best. The bright spot is the food. The chef does an excellent job with the selections and presentation. I think the restaurant is just experiencing some growing pains and will only improve as time goes by. I'll try it again in a couple of months."

  • "I've been six times since CD-West End opened and the food is good. The location and restaurant design are outstanding. Every visit has had a #fail from the server (wrong food, spotty service, dropped a beer in my lap). They're figuring it out and there are managers all over the place comping things when problems happen. But I'd rather not have the problem."
    Dined on 6/2/2014
  • "They've only been open for a few weeks and it's obvious they're still learning and working things out. Food was good, except they forgot to add one of the ingredients on the flatbread. When we brought it up to the server, he didn't know if it was missing or not (i.e. didn't know the menu) and had to check with the manager. When he finally confirmed he was very apologetic and sent the manager over...who needs a lot of work. He didn't apologize, didn't offer anything to make it right...just kinda stood there and smiled. The server comped our dessert which was nice and not needed, but we appreciated the gesture. I used to go to the Gaithersburg location frequently..hopefully West End will get on board soon!"

  • "A new location for this chain. Standard American chain/fast casual restaurant. The hamburger: asked for med rare; it came on the other side of medium. Oh well. The french fries were not hot and the taste was no better than any other diner. The apple crisp was an exercise in too much sugar (belch), no apples, and not hot. Where do they need help? The wait-staff. Service was attentive and overly solicitous. It's clear the majority of the wait-staff are new to restaurants and food service. They'll need some extensive training. Different wait-persons ask the same question; they run into each other at the table and looked confused as to who's doing what. Maitree d couldn't find someone to seat me after I stood there forever."

  • "We were looking forward to this restaurant in the neighborhood. Space is nice. Staff is pleasant. But food? So far, not so good. Can't speak for entire menu, but ahi tuna entrée I ordered at lunch was horrible. Chef should have been embarrassed to send this out from kitchen. Replacement was marginally better, but nowhere near class of better restaurants (e.g., Black Salt, Oceanaire). And the grilled salmon is the usual, boring "North Atlantic" farmed salmon. It's spring. Wild salmon is available. But I guess Café Deluxe chooses not to order it. And what's with the crabcake as the "Market Fish of the Day"? Earth to Chef: it's already on the menu. You're situated between Rasika West and Blue Duck. You need to do better. "

  • "For its first week, Café Deluxe wasn't a bad choice for lunch today. The good aspects include the food and the atmosphere. Try the deviled eggs with crab - delicious. The steak frites are standard, with the steak portion on the generous side...and more flavorful than usual. When the server misheard the order of a member of my party, she was apologetic and flexible, not defensive or inflexible. The air temperature was also much colder than what would be considered comfortable. I rarely complain about this, but it made the experience a bit less enjoyable. Overall, expectations were met, if not slightly exceeded due mostly to the food quality."

  • "The brunch selection is good and we enjoyed the food however there are still some opening kinks being worked out (For example - dirty dishes and glasses; a/c not being up enough). They were very attentive but also seemed to be rushing you out. They tried to take our plates several times so we finally just let them. There were plenty of open tables so it didn't make sense. I hope that's not their style and it was just over zealous staff. We will definitely be back with the hope that they've sorted things out. "

  • "Wine pourings are scant, and need to be improved for the price point, or lower the price. Two significant problems - the young lady at the front desk needs training or to be replaced. My reservation for two - we were put in a corner table against a wall - I saw a 4-top available but was told that was being held for a party of four. No problem, until she seated a party of two, saying they insisted. POOR!"

  • "Had the bison burger and my fiancé had the meatloaf. The Mac and cheese was really good as well. Beer selection is solid as well. Our server was friendly and helpful with ordering( being our first time ). Definitely want to return."
