Diner Reviews
  • "We had another wonderful meal. Great food, good drinks and service. We go several times a year and its always a pleasure. "

  • "Great food and service, but so loud it was hard to hear the others at our table."

  • "I have been coming here for years and I love everything about it-- the decor, the bar, the hustle and bustle, and most of all the excellent dining experience. The only thing missing is Ernest Hemingway sitting at the bar! The food is authentic without being too frilly. I am a cook and there is nothing I prefer more than simple regional food and Cafe D'Alsace delivers a perfect menu. I have recommended it numerous times to friends and family. Our children are now young adults and they recommend it as well. We love to gather there as a family-- sometimes later in the evening to grab a quick bite and a perfectly chilled glass of Sancere."

  • "This place was recommended to me; and I will be forever in their debt. Upon entering the place it smelled amazing. Also, there was a strong sense that people visit once and return again and again. I went for the mushroom ravoli twas divine. The real highlight was the passion fruit souffle. Simply beauitful. This place has a lot of charm and it is a good place to catch up with friends and family. The service could have been a little better, I felt the waiter wasn't that attentive and offered no recommendations and barely engaged with us."

  • "High-end comfort food: always very good, at reasonable prices, with steady hands in the kitchen and in the dining room whether the restaurant is quiet (rarely) or very busy (mostly - and for good reasons ...) The choucroute is really well done - and unlike some other bistros, Cafe d'Alsace knows what to do and brings mustard along without needing to be asked :-). Some of us ordered tuna and trout and were quite pleased as well."

  • "Love the place, the food, the staff! Has the feel of being in a European cafe, without the smoke....thank goodness! Mussels & fries are always outstanding!"

  • "One of my favorite restaurants. Food is always outstanding!! Very nice staff"

  • "Very good neighborhood restaurant with friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere and good bistro food. The burgers and fries are outstanding, the wine list is broad and the staff is attentive and friendly but not overbearing or intrusive. One can linger as well."

  • "The earlier, the quieter. At night, it can get very noisy unless I dine on the early side. Lunch is much better. Service is great; friendly, warm and accommodating. Great menu."

  • "This is the second time we have visited this restaurant. Love the Alsatian menu items. Great wine choices with a wide range of prices. God willing, we'll be back."

  • "I went for the sausage and apple tartin, but my friend opted for the prix-fixe, so I joined her in that. The endive salad was wonderful, the trout was the best I've had since Austria used wild, not farmed, trout, and the ice cream was superb, made on the premises. My friend loved her onion soup, duck confit risotto, and creme brulée as much as I loved my selections. Our waitress Gabrielle was exceptionally nice, friendly and helpful. I wish it were in my neighborhood so I could go very very often."

  • "Love the food here but just too noisy!! In the summer grab a table outside."

  • "Lots of food but not outstanding . I think for prices charged. -food is mediocre. Sent back my katte -it was barely warm .I probably wouldn't go back"

  • "Hostess seated us initially in a table right in front of the door on a cold day. Since the restaurant was empty except 3 other tables, we asked to be moved to another table further from the door. After rolling her eyes, she seated us in a different table, then proceeded to the bar where she loudly talked rudely about us requesting a different table, even motioning towards us. The waitress, Kayla was extremely rude, annoyed that I asked what types of hot tea they had, and also could be heard gossiping about us "Now they are asking what tea we have". This restaurant has the potential to be a quality restaurant, but with this childish poor quality service, I will never go back, nor would I advise anyone to go here. It was beyond unpleasant."

  • "My wife and I simply stumbled upon this spot one day for lunch. What a treat! Charming, warm, and really, REALLY good food! Lamb sausage, grilled filet of sea bass, flourless chocolate cake. Superb! I'll definitely be back."

  • "We did not like the table we were initially offered as it was right next to the entrance door and up against the bar. Our party of 6 waited an extra half hour and after we were seated, the food was very good and the services was excellent. Noise level is high."

  • "hard to get into when it's still too cold to eat 'al fresco' - so make reservations! tables really really close together and 'tight fit' - great wine and beers! managers very active and busy even bussing tables - chef comes out to 'visit' too!"

  • "We went for restaurant week and were disappointed. Our appetizers had clearly been sitting out for at least an hour. The bass en croute was definitely not bass. Looked like tilapia to me. I would not return."

  • "I made a reservation at this restaurant when exploring the links to 2014 -March Restaurant Week. It was near my overnight stay forte a business trip. Met my daughter there for dinner. Wow, what a fun and delicious treat. Food was served quickly and very hot. Will definitely be back when I'm in NYC."

  • "The only bad thing about Cafe D'Álsace is that you always have to wait a little bit for your reservation. That is because nobody wants to leave. I guess. With outstanding food, wine and service, it is just better to sip you wine than face the cold outside."

  • "This place is perfect for hobbits and lilliputians and anyone on a diet. Small portions are served on salad plates and in cute little bowls. If ou crave a slice of fat choose the beef stew which consists of a cube of beef topped with fat served on a salad plate with a drizzle of sauce. When you leave, you'll feel so light you can jog 5 miles."

  • "Although the restaurant was a tight squeeze and very noisy, it was well worth the visit. This was my first time here and the service and food were fantastic. Unfortunately it was a very cold night and my party proceeded by the door, so we got a blast of cold air from time to time. I ordered the duo of beef which was tender and delicious, and the crème brûlée was fantastic. I also tasted the roasted suckling pig which was amazing! That's what I'm going to order next time, because I would definitely be back-on a warmer night."

  • "I really enjoyed the food here flavor-wise. Presentation and service of the food was fantastic. However, for the main dish (shrimp and lobster risotto) I found it a lot heavier/creamier than I've had at other places and I was really expecting the food to be filling but not bloat-inducing. This is a pretty vibrant restaurant and there wasn't an empty table to be seen. That said, 2-4 people sit comfortably and it can be an ideal first or second date spot."

  • "Nice little French Bistro. A bit expensive for the quality of the food. Great service and ambience. Friendly bartenders. All in all a nice way to spend an evening, but certainly not a special occasion restaurant."

  • "Have been going to Cafe D'Alsace since they opened. Love taking friends and family there for the first time. They are always astounded with the diverse menu and how well everything is prepared. Their special menus never disappoint. We've enjoyed family celebrations, holidays, brunch and lunch there. And leave room for one of their fabulous desserts. Wish they took reservations for brunch. Only drawback for my husband and me is that it gets very, very noisy by aby about 8pm. But since we love the food, we just make dinner at Cafe D'Alsace a early affair."

  • "Lunch recently at Café d'Alsace was lovely. The setting is European chic with plenty of polished wood and brass and bright windows looking out on Second Avenue. The food is modified Alsatian, but my first course of sausage with sauerkraut was pretty close to the real deal. The lunch special of grilled fish was nor Alsatian, but certainly well prepared and served with nice accompaniments. Our waiter was attentive but not intrusive and had a wonderful sense of humor so we could banter a bit. There is a nice selection of Belgian and European beers, although ironically they were out of Kronenborg, the beer from Alsace. Informal and friendly, this is definitely worth a trip uptown."

  • "Went here during restaraunt week . Ordered the seafood bisque which was very good. The fish special was striped bass with vegetables in puff pastry was pretty good. It would have been excellent if they used a different fish as the sauce and puff pastry were excellent. No matter, the food we had here was considerably better than many of the french restaurants in the city in the $$-$$$ price range. Our server was friendly and attentive filling our wine glasses as soon as needed even though they had a full dining room and were busy. Would recommend this restaraunt without hesitation."

  • "A friend and I went there for Winter Restaurant Week 2014. We had dinner which was a prix fixe of $38. I was too sold on the appetizers (the seafood bisque was more like a watered soup and the gnocchi and I did not agree) I main course and the desserts was where we fell in love. I had the beef duo (filet mignon and ox tail) and my friend has the flounder wrapped in a pastry dough. For dessert, we ordered the blueberry crème brulee and the chocolate gateaux. SOOOO delicious! A must go!"

  • "My wife and I arrived at 6:15pm for our reservation at 6:30pm for the three persons. We had requested a table on the banquette on the left side of the restaurant through Open Table. The manager had given away our table to other customers. Two tables were empty. One of those tables was "reserved" for another customer. That was nonsense to us. We were very upset at that point. Then, the manager gave us that table. We have eaten many times at this restaurant. This was our first "bad" experience there. Our server was very good. The food there is excellent."

  • "Cafe d'Alsace is one of our favorite restaurants and this most recent visit was probably the best. Our waiter has great recommendations and was attentive and very friendly. The somm also had great recommendations and swapped in a better bottle of wine when they were out of what I ordered. He also let us try some fantastic beers which paired superbly with our dessert. We even got a chance to personally compliment the chef on his excellent food. Definitely go here if you get the chance."

  • "Their ability to pair great french food with wine is superb. This really feels like you are in France and not something trying to imitate."

  • "Love this place -- extremely friendly, excellent menu options and prix fixe, very cool beer list, with a great array of terrific wines (mainly French, some American and other interesting choices). A great value for upscale French bistro fare, with delicious Alsatian specialties (Choucroute Garnie, Boudin Blanc, Cassoulet, especially). Definitely try out some of their beer list."

  • "Our group of 4 friends met for lunch, a first time at this restaurant for all of us. My one complaint was that the portions were too big. I didn't have room for dessert, and the dessert menu looked tempting. Maybe next time I'll order an appetizer for lunch and have room for dessert. Two of us had decaf coffee, which was OK but not exceptional. A third friend had regular coffee, which tasted old, The waitress graciously poured her a fresh cup."
