Diner Reviews
  • "appetizers and entrees were unusual and very good. bread was terrific. ice cream dessert so-so."

  • "This was my first visit to the restaurant and the food was great, the atmosphere fantastic and the staff was friendly. We enjoyed it very much."

  • "wine was perfect Bordeaux and food out of this world. I had duck breast and wife had scallops almost perfect"

  • "Excellent food, very good wine list, adequate service, but I wish they would change their policy so that first guests arriving in a party with a reservation would be seated immediately rather than having to stand and wait for the others to arrive. Do not understand this policy. It offended the early arriving member of our party who said he would not return to this place because of that "offensive" policy. Too bad, since he loved the food as much as the rest of us."

  • "Upon arrival, we felt welcome and relaxed. The staff is very accommodating and sweet. The tables are arranged well with a lot of space. The bar offerings are excellent and our drinks were exceptional. Later, we had drinks at the Bemnelman Bar in the Carlisle and wished we were back here again; quality and pricewise. As for the menu items, we had a hard time choosing. Our food was delicious and we were very happy. No complaints. Definitely will go back."

  • "This was our second time at Cafe D'Alsace and it did not disappoint. The service was a little shaky in the start (especially with getting water), but we had a very tasty meal. The grilled ahi-tuna was grilled to perfection (I like my tuna medium-rare). The steak au-poivre was juicy and tangy from the peppercorn sauce. The fries are nice and well done, no soggy fries on the place. One diner at my table had the special lobster risotto. Really delicious, but it would have been nice for the waitress to state that it was basically a lobster and truffle risotto. Not truffle oil (because people can really overdo that), but real truffles. It was delicious! The crostini's were excellent as well. Would highly recommend coming here for din!"

  • "Really enjoy sitting outside on streetside but was raining this day so sat inside, which is ok. Was first of 3 to arrive so grabbed beer at bar; my beer was quite sour - bartender advised that is how that beer is, which I found no reason not to believe, but perhaps he could have given a heads up. Waiter and support staff friendly and very attentive; food was good; nice selection of beers. Lady at reception was pleasant and accommodating."

  • "A very happy restaurant with a European flair that is suitable for almost any occasion. Excellent food and service."

  • "We decided to go here with a group because of the very good Yelp reviews and how cute it looked from the outside, but the food was very mediocre. I ordered the french onion soup and though the cheese was delicious, the soup itself was way too sweet. I also ordered the tarte flambee, but 1/2 of it was dry and burnt, and the whole thing was too overcooked to taste the cheese at all. My husband was also not impressed by the chicken he ordered. Overall, we were disappointed. Might be a cute place for brunch though?"

  • "Free hard boil egg with beer at the bar. Knowledgable sommelier recommendation of beer pairing for beer lover. Very resonable price if the menu."

  • "I've been here countless times and have never been disappointed in the food. I've sampled pretty much the entire menu, including brunch and the seasonal menus and the kitchen always sends out well prepared food. The service is energetic and the pacing of the meal is never rushed. Great beer and wine(in that order list)."

  • "Sorry the dropped escargot from the menu, but the French onion soup and sausages are outstanding. Great fish."

  • "I have been wanting to try this place since I moved to the UES, and my boyfriend and I finally wandered in on a rainy Friday night. The hostess was accomodating, as we arrived 30 min before our reservation due to the weather. We started with tuna tartare, the charcuterie board (delish), and the grilled octopus. We also got mussels with french fries. All was yummy!!!! definitely will be returning time and time again!"

  • " the food was great, we all enjoyed our selections. The atmosphere was noisy and not a"special" the service was good not great. we will be back for sure."

  • "Casual French with great food and drinks, friendly service - the only minus is the decibel level. Always crowded, usually with a line out the door, so book ahead. "

  • "Went for dinner. Expensive wines. Good was jus okay. The octopus was the only really delicious food item"

  • "I love the look and feel of this restaurant - it really is a great, vibrant place that is always buzzing, in a comforting and not downtown-loud kind of way. The food can be great, but still offers the occasional misfire, though that is usually the result of the spotty service than the kitchen itself. The servers can be wonderful, but more frequently, they are harried and rushed and the food can suffer because of it. That said, if you're looking for a place to enjoy good conversation with a good wine list and a phenomenal beer menu, you can't beat it - just don't be surprised if everything takes a bit longer than you'd expect."

  • "Having eaten at Cafe D'Alsace a number of times, I am forced to wonder if there is any management at all. While our waitress was perfectly attentive during the meal, she seemingly vanished for the last fifteen minutes, while we were hoping to get out check. From what we could tell, the partial cause was the tables that she was forced to cover in the sidewalk area, far removed from where we were seated. If not for the assistance of the bus staff we might still be there. On a busy Saturday night there should be someone on the floor paying attention. The not yet legal hostesses are neither trained nor capable of accomplishing anything other than seating patrons. By the way the food was as usual really good."

  • "Our service was beyond expectactions since our waitress was nice, considerate, as well as accommodating. The food was tasty and nicely plated. Outdoor dining is available, but I would consider timing during the day related to construction work associated with the subway. "

  • "Have eaten here several times. The food is fine, staff pleasant and it is a pleasure to sit outside on the upper east side in the warmer weather. We avoid the restaurant in the winter as it is very noisy. Staff/chef is accommodating to special dietary needs, unfortunately not all are overly attentive even though very nice. Food is prepared well, no real surprises. If sausage is your thing - wonderful variety. "

  • "Food was very mediocre. Service was attentive and for a usualy very noisy restaurant we had a quiet table. The hostess was very helpful. "

  • "Second time here and still impressed with food quality and service; have not repeated a dish and been very satisfied every time. Duck ballotine was excellent and steak frites was very well executed."

  • "My meal here was quite good, the service was sufficiently attentive, and the decor is pleasant. You could say of many restaurants the same, of course. But there is a particularly good "vibe" here. Why, I don't know. But my evening at Cafe d' Alsace was fun, so I'll happily return."

  • "I have been coming here for years and I love everything about it-- the decor, the bar, the hustle and bustle, and most of all the excellent dining experience. The only thing missing is Ernest Hemingway sitting at the bar! The food is authentic without being too frilly. I am a cook and there is nothing I prefer more than simple regional food and Cafe D'Alsace delivers a perfect menu. I have recommended it numerous times to friends and family. Our children are now young adults and they recommend it as well. We love to gather there as a family-- sometimes later in the evening to grab a quick bite and a perfectly chilled glass of Sancere."

  • "High-end comfort food: always very good, at reasonable prices, with steady hands in the kitchen and in the dining room whether the restaurant is quiet (rarely) or very busy (mostly - and for good reasons ...) The choucroute is really well done - and unlike some other bistros, Cafe d'Alsace knows what to do and brings mustard along without needing to be asked :-). Some of us ordered tuna and trout and were quite pleased as well."

  • "Love the place, the food, the staff! Has the feel of being in a European cafe, without the smoke....thank goodness! Mussels & fries are always outstanding!"

  • "This place was recommended to me; and I will be forever in their debt. Upon entering the place it smelled amazing. Also, there was a strong sense that people visit once and return again and again. I went for the mushroom ravoli twas divine. The real highlight was the passion fruit souffle. Simply beauitful. This place has a lot of charm and it is a good place to catch up with friends and family. The service could have been a little better, I felt the waiter wasn't that attentive and offered no recommendations and barely engaged with us."

  • "The earlier, the quieter. At night, it can get very noisy unless I dine on the early side. Lunch is much better. Service is great; friendly, warm and accommodating. Great menu."

  • "Very good neighborhood restaurant with friendly service, a relaxed atmosphere and good bistro food. The burgers and fries are outstanding, the wine list is broad and the staff is attentive and friendly but not overbearing or intrusive. One can linger as well."

  • "I went for the sausage and apple tartin, but my friend opted for the prix-fixe, so I joined her in that. The endive salad was wonderful, the trout was the best I've had since Austria used wild, not farmed, trout, and the ice cream was superb, made on the premises. My friend loved her onion soup, duck confit risotto, and creme brulée as much as I loved my selections. Our waitress Gabrielle was exceptionally nice, friendly and helpful. I wish it were in my neighborhood so I could go very very often."
