Diner Reviews
  • "This is the type of restaurant that I love, and that you only find in cities like San Francisco. Lots of character, tucked away, great food, good wine. Live music on Thursday through Saturday. We made up our own tasting menu, starting with escargot, the special salad of the day with slices of black cod, the asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, then the scallops and coq au vin as main course, all paired with some nice wine. We finished up with the Pain Perdu, which was somewhere between a brioche and bread pudding with a strawberry confiture."

  • "We frequently take CalTrain up on Saturdays. Cafe Claude is one of the few really decent restaurants that is open for lunch on Saturday. Their menu is very good. The food prep is excellent with great flavors and a wide variety of choices. We have noticed that the restaurant is usually just about full by noon -- everyone is enjoying the food and having a great time."

  • "We have been here ten or more times but my enthuiastic support has been eroded by the shrinking list of interesting entrees and the excessive noise further compromised by the music no one can really hear but forces louder and louder conversations that become impossible. "

  • "After waiting only 10 minutes for our 8:00 reservation and enjoying the live music, the manager treated us to 2 flutes of champagne and was so lovely and apologetic ...food was outstanding as was service and the Jazz trio was magnificent-all in a unique and beautiful setting. Menu very diverse-prices unbelievably great - so happy this place is in my neighborhood !"

  • "Café Claude knows how to make you feel you are dining in your friendly neighborhood restaurant in a French city. They have a respectable wine list and the food is well done. A favorite of mine is the trout almondine (with carmelized cauliflower - not like everyone else's) but my dining companion this time got a great arctic char with fennel and veggies that was very nice. The menu is seasonal so in a couple months we'll get something new - something that is nice about most Bay Area restaurants. I try to hit Claude a couple times per year at least. It's a Bay Area favorite for me. "

  • "On a nice day, it's great to go to Cafe Claude and pretend you're in France! Standard bistro menu that's well prepared and both indoor and outdoor dining have nice ambience. I work in the area and it's a nice break from the sandwich and salad spots."

  • "I liked the food and wine. It's a real french at moderate price. But, the waitress seemed too busy. It would have been better if she had been more attentive."

  • "Cafe Claude is tucked away on Claude Ln--more like an alley than a street. But ambiance was good & the food excellent. I felt the pricing was very reasonable for the quality of the food & setting."

  • "Feels like you are in a restaurant in Paris. The celery soup and pasta were excellent and dessert was delicious. The server was very helpful and attentive. Also really enjoyed the live music by the trio."

  • "My husband and I enjoyed fabulous food with very attentive staff. My favorite Niçoise salad ever...even in France !"

  • "The food at Cafe Claude is pretty stereotypically French brasserie... but they know what they are doing and the food is great. Our table for 3 was surprisingly narrow which you don't expect in the US but small tables are more the norm in Paris... so one can look at it as an added authentic detail!"

  • "Our second time at Cafe Claude. All around wonderful experience. Attentive wait staff. Food delicious with the chocolate Moelleux with creme anglaise to finish it off. We will return again!"

  • "Have fewer tables so one is not squeezed in corner."

  • "I've been wanting to come to this place forever because of the live music. At first, it looked very weird as we walked into the door with the band in the little corner besides the bar. But we were seated in the far end of the restaurant and still could've heard the band play clearly. I was very impressed. The service was great, our server was very attentive and accommodating. The food was good but I was not super impressed by it. I had the duck confit. It's a little bit dry which is to my taste."

  • "This spot is a gem. Quaint! It's discrete alley location adds to its ambience. Service excellant. Menu selections excellant. Reservations needed. A favorite for SF locals. Great place! Do not miss it."

  • "If you want old style French food and a nice old style San Francisco spot and aren't interested in innovation or creativity this may be the spot for you."

  • "Enjoyed the atmosphere and the food was pretty good. The hanger steak was good but I did not enjoy the accompanying "steak frites." I expecting a thicker cut not shoestring. The desserts made up for any shortfalls ....fantastic!"

  • "Feels like a hidden gem. The food ranges from good to fabulous. Outside tables are relaxed and comfortable; inside it is crowed and way too loud. We've been here several times in the last five years and are always happy."

  • "Wonderful restaurant. Great cocktails and food. Definitely recommend for date, friends, etc."

  • "I was surprisingly amazed by the quality of food and wine selection available here. I would definitely order the french onion soup and the coq au vin. If you like raw beef then the steak tartar is a must."
    Dined on 3/19/2014
  • "Fun place, great food. Only problem is that the tables are so close together that you can't be sure where your meal ends and that of you neighbor begins. Anyone overwweight would not be able to get to their seat along the wall. Very difficult to have a private conversation without including the neighbor."

  • "Cafe Claude has become well known and they know it. Prices have gone up a LOT - a $130+ tab for two is unreasonable. Not helped by a waitress who when asked for two glasses of $9 wine recommended a carafe .. without telling us that it cost $36 ... Or by the hostess who when we arrived early for our reservation had no suggestion except that we come back later. Got the distinct impression that we had committed a federal crime. Food quality is still good but we won't be back."

  • "This was our second time at Cafe Claude. We have tried to come in the past, and there hasn't been space, so I recommend a reservation. The service, food and music were great. Just as they had been before. We had the chocolate cake dessert with the creme anglaise, it was so good, I would highly recommend it!"

  • "It starts with the authentic menu - absolutely true to French cuisine. Café Claude is a gem, a true embodiment of a Parisian bistro or it could be a bistro in any French city. The food is wonderful and the wait staff perfect."

  • "We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Cafe Claude on 3/18/14. I would highly recommend early dining. We had a 5:30 pm reservation. The restaurant started filling up within the hour. The hostess recommended a cozy corner which was private and romantic. The food, service and ambience was wonderful. We'll definitely return!"

  • "Cafe Claude never disappoints. The food is wonderful, ambiance is lovely, you can dine indoors or outdoors regardless of the time of year. One of my favorites! (The fries, Brussels sprouts, and French onion soup are all to die for.)"

  • "For decades(?) my best friend and I have celebrated our birthdays by being at Cafe Claude's for a weekday lunch. It is where we enjoy fine French food and ambience in all ways and always. Merci, Harvey and George"

  • "Always fun to go out for French fare - and our friends treated us with a beautiful bottle of Bordeaux they brought for dinner. Yummy! Time to talk, leisurely dinner, large salads, delicious trout, husband had coq au vin, molten chocolate cake for dessert - all good. Live music in the background - a fun Saturday night...."

  • "My husband and me were looking for some solid, old fashioned restaurant with music and romantic ambience in San Francisco for Saturday evening. Unfortunately, Café Claude did not meet our expectations. Small, crowded, too noisy- not for romantic. Waiters are coming and urging you to finish. I can understand their concern to increase customer turnover, nevertheless , they did not help us feel comfortable and relaxed. This restaurant might be good for groups and busy people who thrive in noisy, busy environment, not for people looking for romantic and relaxation."

  • "Charmant X3. A great place to have really good food a la mode Parisienne (zinc bar; Lillet Blanc). The live music is the perfect addition and with easy and inexpensive parking one block away (Sutter-Stockton), Cafe Claude is a pleasure every time. Coq au vin--doesn't get much better."

  • "My husband and I had dinner at Cafe Claude's last Friday. The ambience was lovey and the food delicious. We also enjoyed the live music which started at 7;30pm. We felt a little pressured to order and eat quickly at first, but once we made it clear we wanted a slower pace the waiter was totally fine with it. We would definitely go back!"

  • "Every time I am in the financial district I stop by. Have lived in Paris for a long time and this reminds me of the bistros near my flat. Well done!"

  • "Two of my friends and I went here to celebrate a birthday and had a wonderful time! Our waiter was super thoughtful, bringing out virgin drinks for us to celebrate. The only downside was the couple behind us getting to 3rd base and beyond (a little too close for comfort). Definitely coming back to impress others with our knowledge of this classy little lane."

  • "I've been to Cafe Claude downtown for a business lunch on two separate occasions. Each time I had the "Brandade de Morue", a baked salt cod potato souffle. I demolished every ounce of it, warm, comforting, delicious and salty. On the first visit I paired my brandade with a celery root, apple and leek soup which was also terrific. On my second trip I had the chevre salad, which was perfectly fine though not as memorable as the other dishes. Net net, feels like I've found a good standby close to my office for the occasions when a sandwich won't quite cut it."

  • "Cafe Claude truly is a neighborhood gem! Tucked away in a mysterious alley way, the restaurant is a great place to catch up with friends or to have a romantic dinner. The ambiance favors a sophisticated crowd but fortunately the service is unpretencious and the food is classic French. You get the notion that you have been let in on a best kept secret. Cafe Claude is definitely worth a glance."
