Diner Reviews
  • "Delicious! the Duck Confit, the Coq au Vin, the Escargot and the Vieux Carré cocktail all made up for a wonderful meal at CC."

  • "The food here is terrific, as is the attention given to each of us by the servers. We came for a special birthday, and it could not have been better."

  • "Such a little gem. Has the feel of the neighborhood bistro in Paris. Shared a bottle of Bourgonne (Burgundy) and the pate, both great. The duck confit was very good. Plate du Jour was Article Char, very much like salmon, sadly a little over cooked. Best entree was the trout."

  • "Cozy atmosphere, excellent food, excellent service. The pate appetizers were excellent, as was trout armandine. Very good wine selection."

  • "Come here for the food and service but not to have a quiet conversation unless you eat outside in the covered dining area."

  • "My husband and I ate at Cafe Claude before going to the theater. I found the tables very close and the party of 4 next to us unaware of others. We found the starter good; a great French Onion soup and solid walnut/goat cheese salad. Sadly, the entrees were unremarkable. Following our main course, I was surprised they do not offer nonfat milk for lattes. Timing was good for our event but with the number of choices downtown, we won't be back."

  • "Cafe Claude does not usually disappoint - the food is always very good, and the staff is professional and on top of things. But this time around, our waitress was a ditz. She took my drink order then completely forgot to put it in. (Our party of two sat inside, and the section was three quarters-full. It's a good think the manager was attentive."

  • "Been here many times and the food is still as good as ever. Our table of 4 had the asparagus soup and steak tartare to start, both of which were excellent. We had the monkfish, rabbit parpadelle, salad nicoise and poulet roti all of which were as good as we remembered. Oh, and the chocolate souffle..died and gone to heaven. Only watch out..if you are a party of 4 it is possible to get a table that is cozy enough that it becomes an issue simply fitting everything on the table."

  • "Was running late (10 minutes) so I called 15 minutes ahead of time and the hostess gave me attitude..I mean jeez, I'm your guest? And I'm courteously calling? Wtf! When I got there (5 minutes late), got a cool/unwelcome reception. The owner(?) a French woman, though, was gracious. Hard to shake off the reception!"

  • "All good. Happy, crowded, place. Worth the wait at the bar with friendly lady bartender and fine wine."

  • "we had a lovely dinner- everything was delicious and the service was excellent."

  • "I've always considered Cafe Claude a good fallback plan, and the spot is darling, but the food just was not up to par this visit."

  • "A great find. Looking for something different and we found it. The food choices were excellent. Everyone in the place was friendly. The service was quick."
    Dined on 6/25/2014
  • "The coq au vin was dry though well flavored. The french onion soup was tasty but needed a bit more oomph. Wine list is ok, although the wines by the glass are expensive for the quality. The bread lacks the texture of a great baguette. Better than the Belden Lane alternatives but my French friends would not be happy."
    Dined on 6/24/2014
  • "Step into Claude Lane and be transported to the Latin Quarter. Weekend 3-piece jazz tops the effect. The menu standards are very good but we trust the specials to be just that. Enjoy!"

  • "We had a party of four dining early on a Sunday. No one there when we started, but filled up quickly. Good basic bistro atmosphere, nothing fancy but feels quite French. Service was very good, informed and attentive. Starters were only ok -- salad was uninspired, escargot were good but again not exceptional. Main courses were all very good. Coq a vin, trout, duck confit were all first class. Pork chop special was only fair -- somewhat dry. Killer was the creme brulee for desert -- to die for. We ate indoors, but outdoor seating in alley has heaters and would be fun enough, but no view or anything enticing."

  • "Great place in Downtown San Francisco. Wonderful live music, exceptional service, and the food was actually to die for. The only thing is that the place is a little small, and the music was a little too loud for my taste, but everything else was perfect and spot-on. Great place, highly recommended."

  • "The staff is friendly and charming, (our waiter was from the Alps near Evian and understood the tenor of the experience we were looking for: conversational and fun!) The food and the mixed drinks were very good, we marched through small plates (pâté, cheese, (I think, as I said the drinks were good!) soup, and split the entrée, and it ended up being too much food. The music was very good and just enough so you could listen when the conversation lulled but did not force you to raise your voice to be heard."

  • "Have been here often for lunch and it never disappoints. Fun place to sit outside or inside."

  • "I am from Santa Barbara and each time we travel to SF we make sure to have at least one meal here. The food is wonderful as is the service."

  • "The trout was average at best. My wife can prepare trout much better. The menu is overpriced for the quality."

  • "The jazzy ambiance was really appreciated. Very good food and service. I recommend the "Coq au vin"."

  • "Went for lunch with coworkers. The interior is warm and appealing. Service was friendly and unobtrusively constant. The Pan-Bagnat was delicious... all three of us had one! I only have one constructive suggestion: add some curb appeal to the outdoor space. I usually prefer to dine outdoors but chose to be seated inside. The outdoor space felt a little uninspired. It needs some flowers, lights, art... charm. Otherwise I'm a big fan of Cafe Claude."

  • "over years of dining in SF from east bay, Cafe Claude downtown remains at the top of my list; their food, presentation, wines, atmosphere with music & service are second to none. Claude Lane is a secluded spot nestled between China Town & the financial district. You will not be disappointed."

  • "Fantastic food, excellent service and romantic Parisian ambiance."

  • "Went with group of friends from work. Service was excellent! The butter served with the bread was amazing and us four ladies on diets ordered 4 servings of the bread and butter, it was that good!! Asparagus with prociutto was an outstanding app. The French Onion soup excellent and desserts devine. Wished i ordered an entree instead of a salad, that was the only so-so part of the meal. Ambiance is wonderful, though I would highly recommend eating inside as opposed to outside which lacks the wonderful ambiance found inside. I will be returning to this wonderful restaraunt."

  • "Went to Cafe Claude for a 15 year anniversary dinner on a Thursday night. Coming down the alleyway to enter the restaurant had us a little worried but we were delightfully surprised went entering the restaurant. It's a small venue but it does have room for a live Jazz trio playing in the corner which was perfect. They added just the right atmosphere and played at just the right volume for the small space. The interior design is tastefully done with warm tones that help the cozy / romantic atmosphere of the restaurant. We ordered the Coq Au Vin and the Pasta Du Jour. The pasta was good but the Coq Au Vin was excellent. Would also recommend the cheese tray. Pick the last 3 cheeses on the list!"

  • "Interesting location, at the end of a strip of restaurants tucked into an alley, Italy feel. Interior: quaint, romantic setting (although it was not that kind of night), comfy seating, etc. Wine list was small but enough choices to please all palates. Went with the Malbec, one of my favs, had 2 glasses. French bread was bit dry, ordered more, somewhat better. Chavre salad; To much salad and not enough "fixings" but, fresh. Goat cheese not in salad on bread but amazing. French Onion soup: Excellent and not to salty. Would recommend. Blended asparagus soup with mint oil, very good. Creme Brulee was flavorful but runny. Someone please be up on the online menu, several items I was looking forward to was not on menu in restaurant."

  • "Excellent food--escargots, steak bordelaise, duck with lentils. Service superb. The Brazilian waitress was just all smiles and efficient. Jazz playing in the background added to the wonderful occasion"

  • "Great place to have dinner and hear live jazz. Bibb salad, French onion soup, and coq a vin are all awesome! Try the Salines Pomeral wine, it's really good for the price. Proper portion sizes so you don't feel like you pigged out! Give it a try:). "

  • "Whenever we find ourselves in San Francisco, we have to go to Cafe Claude. The food, service and ambiance are always "top notch". We've never been disappointed. Great restaurant and wonderful steak tartare which is always worth the visit."

  • "Try the escargots here. They are among the best ever! The wines and cocktails are pretty good as well. "

  • "I've always loved this little Union Square French restaurant. The food is reasonably good and the service is generally good as well. For this reason, I booked a table to have a business dinner. To my dismay, however, they had very very loud music which made it very difficult to talk without shouting. I spoke to a waitress about it and she admitted it was quite loud but it remained that way through dinner. When I go to dinner I really want to be able to have a reasonable conversion with my dinner guest. I will not be back without making sure they don't have music."

  • "Haven't been here for at least 10 years but thought the food and service was excellent. "
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "Good solid french cooking -- but it is a small restaurant with live jazz bands and very poor acoustics, so it is difficult to carry on a conversation. The music is nice but it would be so much nicer if they would just turn the volume down a few notches."
