A word from Café Centro
Café Centro is a bustling midtown brasserie with a stylish look that echoes the glamour of Paris in the 1930's. Guests can watch our chef as he prepares French-inspired cuisine with Mediterranean accents and sear top quality steaks. Pastry chef Ken Larsen's sumptuous desserts are not to be missed. The well priced wine list has received numerous Wine Spectator awards and has been voted "Best Beaujolais Bistro". Regular wine dinners are well attended. The attached Beer Bar is a great place for New York’s best burger, a casual lunch or to unwind over craft beers and cocktails. Diner Reviews
  • "Good for breakfast, lunch and drinks after work. I come here often with business colleagues."

  • "I have been a regular at Cafe Centro for many years. The quality of the food has been very consistent over the years. It is highly under-rated because I rank it among the top 10 best restaurants in New York"

  • "I was very pleased with my dinner at Cafe Centro. Well-rounded menu, reasonably priced to moderately expensive. Fabulous baguette to start, and ample wine list by the glass. Crab/lobster cakes delicious, steak frites excellent, onion soup looked authentic. Good portions, except my only disappointment was in the sea bass. It was very tasty, but it was a slight and slim piece, in a broth. With nothing accompanying it. Will definitely return just won't order the sea bass. Hamburger looked sensational."

  • "Continuously excellent venue for midtown business luncheons with friends, clients, colleagues, even adversaries. Excellent fare. Attentive staff at front and at table."

  • "Great French cuisine. Wonderful variety and excellently crafted menu. Exceltional service and atmosphere for a business lunch or dinner, but great for non-business too! A little pricy, but that was expected."

  • "I have eaten here many times over the last 10+ years. The last 2x have been not up to the prior experiences. This time I specifically requested that the bacon be done "crisply" on the $29 lobster club. It arrived with soggy very undercooked bacon. When I asked for it to be replaced I was told that it gets like that on the sandwich - what? My friend's burger had perfectly cooked bacon and when I pointed it out he grudgingly brought me other bacon - 10 mins later and it was charred to petrification. I gave up. Also some of the lobster was shredded and tough. I had a much better experience from Luke's Lobster food truck the week before. Wine was good and so was creme brûlée, but for $62 (with tax and tip) I will not be rushing back."

  • "Nice place for lunch. Good service. It was definitely too noisy. Their signature salad was very good, as was the trout. The booth we had was very comfortable."

  • "I was dissapointed at the recent service here and embarrassed because the place was my suggestion. As this is usually my default for a quick dinner with a friend or client. Reservations were for 5:45 on a quiet Monday night!!! My guest was seated and I joined him around 6pm. The server never came to the table to take our order for beverages but served others in the area who arrived after us. We didn't receive our meal until much later. No apology from the waiter and we left a good tip. I will not recommend this restaurant to friends."

  • "If you need a reasonably priced, reasonably quiet place with decent unexciting food for a business breakfast near Grand Central, Cafe Centro is just right."

  • "First time visit will be back. Greeted well by staff and our server was especially efficient and friendly."

  • "Coming into town and staying right in Grand Central is a blessing in bad weather and just for a time when coming in just for a lunch and heading back out. Food is good, not outstanding . The place is pleasant and the staff friendly."

  • "The location makes this ideal for a business lunch or a relaxing dinner after work. The food does not disappoint and the wines are good yet affordable."

  • "Someone had recommended I consider Cafe Centro for a midtown breakfast meeting and I'm glad I did. The menu had some good options at reasonable prices (for the area). I had an egg white omelette, which was very good. The space is large, though some of the tables are very small (I had to ask to switch after being shown to my table). The service was prompt and friendly."

  • "Restaurant accomodated to the request for a quiet table, server was well-educated about the options, and honestly stated that the bass portion was on the small side. Love the small baguettes, all food was very good. Chose it for location by Grand Central. Price/value is fair; it is not a bargain."

  • "I go to Cafe Centro frequently and enjoy it. This time I order a bottle of white wine, the bottle was warm. It would have taken some time for it to chill. There was no offer for a free round or a subsitute bottle. Very disappointing"

  • "Cafe Centro has excellent French cuisine, very attentive service, an interesting wine list, and a warm atmosphere. I have dined here many times; and, keep coming back. I recommend Cafe Centro, as well as the other restaurants in the Patina Group. I have dined in all of their restaurants; and, have always had an excellent experience."

  • "Not the best experience. Salmon was almost fried in its preparation which was strange. After bringing the wine, server asked if it was ok. When told that it was not ok and actually tasted sour, replied I know I don't like that pino either, but it's the only one on the menu. After we finished we waited about 15 minutes for the check even though there were only a few other tables. During that time we saw another table ask about the taste of a Bloody Mary and were told it was made specifically for you. They left before us and the full Bloody Mary was still sitting on the table untouched. "

  • "This was my second day of dining at El Centro during the Loire Wine Week. The lobster bisque was excellent and the beef was cooked to perfection. The service was consistently good. The location, in the MetLife/Grand Cental complex is very convenient."

  • "This was my first dinner at El Centro, prompted by Loire Wine Week. The food was excellent. That was complimented by attentive service and a pleasing décor. I was so favorably impressed that I booked a dinner for the following night."

  • "Excellent service with an a waiter who not only knew how to provide exceptional service but went above and beyond to ensure that we were pleased in all aspects of our dining experience. The food was delicious and the wine selection and recommendation just on point. Would definitely return and recommend to my friends and family. "

  • "We went to Cafe Centro for its location --my friend was staying nearby--and because it was "Loire Valley wine week," with $30 entrees plus wine choices. We got a table immediately, and the decor was good. There were three problems because of which I will not go back. First, half of the choices on the "Loire Valley week" list were unavailable. Second, the "entree" was way too small--piece of fish on a few green beans, though it was pretty tasty. Guess they wanted us to buy something else. Finally, the wait-staff was clueless. They brought the bread after the entree, and tried to take my plate three different times before I finished eating. And there were dozens of empty tables, so they didn't need to get rid of us. Farewell, CC."

  • "This is a restaurant where the food is good, delicious baked bread, good wine list, full bar, and you can actually hear your conversation. Highly recommend."

  • "Eat lunch here often, dinner too. Nice room, plenty of space between tables and many booths. Food is always good, and th baguettes they put on the table, with sweet butter, are the BEST. We lingered unhurried in the late afternoon. The cappuccino and espresso arrived promptly but not hot enough, and they were replaced with hot drinks without question or attitude. Not excessively expensive for midtown, good menu, good food."

  • "I returned to CC after several years away. Ouch. The food was ok - not great - but over priced (yes, I know what food costs in Mid-Town, where I have worked since 1981). And the service! Our main course came while we were still finishing our soup. Then the check came without having been requested. CC does have excellent bread. This is my last visit. Too bad. "

  • "The large elegant brasserie type dining room has many booths which create a more private conversational experience. The service is attentive but not overbearing. I have dined here many times and the food is consistently excellent. Crab cakes are the best in New York and my most recent seafood platter had very fresh oysters, mussels, ceviches, shrimp and a large portion of lobster. The desserts are heavenly."

  • "Restaurant has great food all of the time. Their menu is on target all of the time with no mishaps. This is our office go to place because it is located in an area which is easy for all to meet and also easy for all to get home. Would recommend Cafe Centro highly to anyone especially if you are a group of people. The staff is always good and friendly."

  • "We enjoy the portions at Cafe Centro. We never feel stuffed just fully satisfied with the portions...and each thing on the plate is delicious. We had a delightful waiter who made the experience all the more special."

  • "I eat in the GC area a lot, mostly for after work socializing. The noise level and crowding at most places around there are off the charts. Factor in forgettable food and it makes me want to just continue the commute home. Centro is a relatively quiet, well-run and welcoming place. The food is traditional and very good. The service is old school - you feel taken care of by a staff that knows the menu. A few dishes, like the lamb tagine, are stand-outs but the primary charm is the oasis Centro provides when looking for a place a group of friends can not only enjoy good food but each other's company as well. The decor does not dazzle but the stellar service and the joy of not having to shout your dinner conversation make it a friendly star"

  • "Prix Fixe on the menu is an excellent choice if you're undecided what to eat. I had guests from Hong Kong who were staying at the Waldorf Astoria. They told me that they would definitely go back to Cafe Centro because one can walk over the restaurant which is very convenient from the hotel. The restaurant noise was moderate and I can hear my friends speaking loud and clear in our table. It's been a while since I have been back to this restaurant but if my guests are from out of town, this is the resturant to bring them and it won't break the bank on your wallet. "

  • "Excellent mid-week price fixed meal, but very slow service."

  • "The best part of my lunch was the smiling host changing our table to a booth. After that it was downhill. My guest and I each had a tough, tasteless lobster salad (a special of the day) and, once we paid the check, were totally ignored by our server as we asked for water. Yes, perhaps something else on the menu would have been better, and perhaps our waitress was harried (in her defense it was lunch hour), but a $30 lobster salad should have some redeeming qualities (sorry, not even the greens were appealing), and when you tell the server a dish is unsatisfactory (I admit, my comment wasn't forceful, totally my fault), you expect some response. Next time? I think not. "

  • "Average at best. Deserted on weekends. No atmosphere. Poor decor. Dark and depressing. Food of average quality. No imagination when it comes to presentation. Everything just sort of blah... Go elsewhere, there are much nicer places if you are looking to spend that kind of money. "
