Diner Reviews
  • "Perfect for a nice dinner before a show at the Times Union Center. Authentic Tuscan bread. Fresh el dente pasta with fresh and flavorful sauces - we tried the sausage with tomato cream sauce and the pistachio and arugula pesto - both very good!"

  • "I joined my daughter and a friend for dinner before the Justin Timberlake concert. We have always enjoyed dining here and really looked forward to it. However we all agreed it was just OK. We were very disappointed and wonder what changed; maybe the chef since we've been there. Not sure. Our servers were very friendly and attentive. At least the JT concert didn't disappoint. He was truly amazing!!!"

  • "Famous for the eggplant, but I liked the puttanesca. Friendly service and a jazz trio makes for a great date."

  • "We have been to Cafe Capriccio many times before, but this Saturday night prior to the Paul McCartney concert the service was very poor. I have never felt so rushed in my life, although it was only the waitress. The supporting staff was very cordial."

  • "Cafe Capriccio is the best that Albany and possibly upstate New York has to offer. I have rarely eaten at a better spot in that area and if I have, it was a specialty locale (Capital City Gastropub in the early days). Albany is below average on the restaurant scene so this was a pleasant surprise. Best pasta for 50 miles. Near flawless service. Squid Ink! pasta is to die for. Really amazing dish. The fish special failed us and some of the other items (salads, etc) were uncreative but serviceable. Cheesecake was unique and pretty good. Doubt they make it in house but they source it from somewhere pretty good. Pizza is decent, but there are much better out there. All in all, best restaurant in Albany, but that isn't saying that much. A-"

  • "Highly professional in a big-city/classic way. Wait staff operates like a symphony-everyone contributes individually to make the whole experience a joy. They are subtle, professional and conversational while all being unobtrusive. Food up-to-date, fresh, deeply flavorful and delightful on the palate. Intimate and cozy room. Would go again--many times"

  • "Old school Italian resto in Albany. Not worth a trip, but good find if you are in town. Pleasant surroundings, nice menu, very good food (and nice wine list, too)."

  • "Great homemade pasta, never disappointed with the food or service."

  • "Preparations close to Tuscany . Example would be their ample Caprese salad with in house made mozzarella , fresh arugula with a little bitter bite and perfect tomatoes ... simple and spot on . Tuna , real roast potatoes and broccoli entree was excellent . Service was seamless . Live out of state but will return before I leave NYS ."

  • "We loved it when Jim Rua did most of the cooking just as we loved the exciting menu of his brief Troy venture ( below Daisy Baker's) but this time, although the food was pretty good it was not up to his wonderful Bologna -inspired genius."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner and the service was great! The Insalata Caprese, Ravioli Special, Pasta Bolognese were all perfect. Then we tried the Dolce Calzone for dessert - it was amazing. "

  • "Cafe Capriccio never disappoints. The food is amazing. Both the atmosphere and service make you feel taken care of and indulgent, but in a totally unpretentious way. I highly recommend CC!"

  • "Went there on a recommendation from a friend of mine for myself and my wife's 20th anniversary. The setting almost struck me as too small and too quiet but I can't possibly rate them less for that as the food was absolutely incredible! If you enjoy good food, this IS the place for you."

  • "I made a reservation knowing downtown would be crowded for the Springsten concert. Other times trying to get a decent meal before a concert was challenging but not at Cafe Capriccio. Our table was ready with excellent service. The food was delicious. The place was packed but we never waited to get our drinks or food. We had time to relax, have an after dinner drink and made the concert with time to spare. I was with family from out of state and they remarked on the lovely ambiance and excellent service/food."

  • "Kidnapped my husband at work, flew him from Washington DC to Albany, for dinner and the Springsteen concert - a surprise for his 60th bday. Not knowing where to eat, I turned to Yelp, Open Table & Trip Advisor-and thought this might be the kind of place I was looking for. Great Italian food but not the ordinary kind, cool atmosphere & within walking distance of the TU center. It was all that and more. The food was of a very high quality. The maitre d was delightful - didn't mind seating the four of us who got there early for drinks. After that the service was a bit more edgy - I don't know if it because they had a full house all wanting to eat and get out at the same time - or something else. However, I would definitely go back!"

  • "Hadn't been here in a few years and was looking forward to returning. It was a big disappointment. My dinner companions both got the veal Marsala. The Marsala sauce was too sweet, and the veal was soggy. Also, there were tomatoes in the sauce. Tomatoes in Marsala sauce just doesn't work. I got the puttanesca. The anchovies overwhelmed the olives, capers and tomatoes--it was like eating anchovies paste and nothing else. The pasta iwas overdone. The waitress who was our primary server seemed pressured--rushed us to order, and even told us we better order if we wanted to make it to the concert we were attending afterward. As a result, we were through dinner, appetizer and dessert in one hour, with time to spare. We expected more from Cafe C."

  • "We had an absolutely delightful meal -- The Eggplant Capriccioso and Veal Scallopine were wonderful and complemented well by the Rubio Toscano wine. Service was outstanding from the time we walked in the door. Looking forward to a return visit to try other menu delights."

  • "If you're in the mood for Italian done right, I highly recommend Cafe Capriccio. The staff was sweet and attentive. Some groups were loud, but it must have been the night. I was looking forward to seeing Jim Rua for my birthday, but he was upstairs at the Chef's Table for the night. My drink was good and strong and my hangar steak was bloody and tender. All that was missing was a candle in my cannoli. I put it in my reservation. My only complaint, but no one's fault. It was a lovely night. "

  • "We had a lovely meal at Café Capriccio. Great service reasonably quiet and great food ... A little more crowded than I expected at 6:30 on a Thursday night but we had a booth and plenty of space between us and other parties. Homemade ravioli, fabulous eggplant, great wood fired pizza..all a pleasure topped by a good wine and a prompt but unobtrusive server. Not cheap but worth the price! "

  • "Our last visit was with mixed service issues...completely non-issue this visit, in fact...better than average attention was offered to our wishes and questions and we were never rushed. The wild boar was inspired comfort food with a nod toward the top meal honors (of party of 4)...I went with Chef's pesce inspiration della Sera - sole was perfectly done with memorable toppings and flavorful risotto. The eggplant capriccioso also made the grade although the polenta as less "seared" as expected...still fine. I've gotta go back since there's at least 4 more items on the menu I've just have to try...Bravo folks!"

  • "The service is wonderful and the food was delicious. My husband and I split the antipasto Toscana and shrimp brochette, both tasty. The pickled vegetables on the antipasto were particularly good. I had a half portion of pasta with shrimp with escarole and lemon-it was tart, which I really liked. My husband had veal scallopini and liked it as well. The homemade bread was a particular highlight!. We did not have dessert. My one criticism is with the wine list- a nice selection, but too few wines by the glass-they do offer half bottles on several items, which is nice, but since I was the only one dreinking, my choice for a glass was more limited. Would have liked to have seen an Albarino on the list!"

  • "Of the 17 restaurants participating in Restaurant week, Cafe Capriccio was the only one that shortened it's participation from 10 days to 5, but the Restaurant Week website did not identify that. We showed up on Wednesday and were told it was over. At that point it was too late to go to a different one. Bad Business, we would have made a different choice that night."

  • "I found that this restaurant was in need of a good cleaning. Things needed to be updated and cleaned. Thank God for low lighting. The food was good but it could have been a nicer experience is the "scenery" was neater."
