A word from Cafe Berlin
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German and traditional cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as patio for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers.Continued

  • "excellent service good food and not too expensive. definately worth a visit"

  • "We had high hopes for this German eatery. It was a beautiful day and the outdoor seating was wonderful. The server was not. She forgot a number of things throughout the course of the meal, and acted as though she did not want to be there. The food was cold, and caused upset stomachs after we left. We use Open Table regularly, and 90 percent of the places we go are acceptable. This one was not."

  • "Great location but street parking was a little tight. Staff was very pleasant but service was a bit slow on a busy spring weeknight. We were happy to enjoy the setting and beer while catching up with an old friend. All my German favorites were on the menu."

  • "I went to Café Berlin because of my fondness of German fare for all of the time I spent in Germany. We were greeted by Mikayla (I hoped I spelled it right), she was also our waitress and she was delightful in very way. She informed us about the daily specials. And how one of the Chef’s receive a smoker for his birthday and has been smoking up a storm. The special was wild boar ribs (smoked, of course) and homemade wild boar sausage. It was delicious. My friend that was with me had a nagging cough and Mikayla suggested a German “hot toddie”, other than Rum I can’t tell you what was in it but my friend didn’t cough for the rest of the night. I absolutely love this place and I’m recommending it to everyone. I will be back very soon."

  • "We had a great dinner recently at Cafe Berlin. Although i have been there many times and thought it was great food I am not a foodie. We took foodie friends for the first time and they loved it. We will come again and recommend it to all."

  • "We were looking for a German Restaurant with easy walking distance from Metro, to go to dinner with friends from State Department. We lived in Germany and am usually dissatisfied with American German ?Restaurants. . .Not here. . .Traditional German fare, well prepared, nicely served, pleasent atmosphere. . .We will go back!"

  • "My family and I have lived Germany and loved the food. Cafe Berlin was a nice find to recapture some of the memories that we have from Germany. Very Good food!"

  • "I checked this online before a recent trip to DC and was not disappointed! The best German food in many a time. Best red cabbage, best sauerbraten. Incredible selection - the chef is a gem. Great choice of imported beers, wines and schnapps! Michaela was welcoming, charming and entirely delightful. She made us feel right at home as we sought refuge in the downpour following a hockey game. Gemütlich and cozy atmosphere. Recommend making reservations, but they are open almost all day. We cannot wait to return. Hoffentlich bald! Daniela"

  • "Celebrating our 21st anniversary, we took advantage of the generous discount offered by the restaurant on the occasion of our anniversary. The food was delicious and the portion generous. The steins of beer come in many sizes, depending on one's thirst. The wait staff was attentive. We always enjoy coming here for an authentic German meal."

  • "Service was slow because a large group had booked and they weren't staffed sufficiently to handle the exceptionally large crowd. This is NOT our previous experience (dating back to the 90's). Service has usually been friendly and excellent. One problematic night does not change our high opinion of the place."

  • "We were a party of 14 in a small restaurant. Service was superb, especially given the size of our party! The food was GREAT!! Everyone raved about all the different dishes from both the traditional and the seasonal menus. The beer was pretty good too! LOL Café Berlin is definitely worth another visit...soon!!!"

  • ".....small but warm & inviting restaurant near the Senate side of Capitol Hill. Great food & excellent service. In particular the goulash soup was memorable. I'll be back."

  • "This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. It's a tiny restaurant with a bar. The bar was full - appeared to be locals who knew their way around. Many delicious food choices. I had the Weiner Schnitzel; my husband had the sausage dish. We both enjoyed flavorful dishes that we would order again. The customer service was excellent. We sat at a window seat which was lovely. Shouldn't admit this but we had the fried brie appetizer -- it was outstanding. Will definitely be back; groupon got us there but dinner is definitely worth it with or without the groupon. Note - as we were leaving a customer next to us got the smoked wild boar and it smelled amazing!"

  • "A very nice restaurant reminding me of my time in Germany. The service was very nice, the people were very attentive, friendly and professional. The food was quite good and the atmosphere was nice and cozy. Definitely a place I would return to. Too bad it was winter, as the restaurant looks quite prepared to host people outside. All that is missing is a nice big oak tree to make you feel that you are back in Germany in a beer garden. If you want a nice restaurant to taste the foods of Germany, this is your place."

  • "Two converted row-houses rendered into a “Kneipe” atmosphere, one almost wants this to be a “Gasthaus,” it’s so intimate inside. I’m confident the patio outside is well-used as a miniature beer-garden in warmer months. Menu options include salads for those wanting a vegetarian option. Try sharing the “baked” Brie & sauerkraut balls. Traditional Jaegerschnitzel, Cordon Bleu, and a combination wurst/rippchen, of Frankfurt am Main). A seasonal offering of a butter-panned trout was so well done that we gladly accepted samples. Of course those opting for beer enjoyed the choices, even us teased with consuming “girlie-size” glasses (.5L). The service and the menu options make me want to visit again, ideally with other novices to German cuisine."

  • "I'm never disappointed when I dine at the Cafe Berlin, which unfortunately is not often because I don't live in the area. The food is excellent and the Bretzels with cheese are wonderful! The bier selection rotates and I'm thrilled when I can get my favorite schwarz lager on tap! Nice outdoor seating to watch the world walk by and drool!"

  • "I really enjoyed Cafe Berlin. It was quiet and not at all busy for Sunday brunch. Our server was very nice and came to check on us often, so I know it was not her fault that the food took 30 min after we ordered. However, we were not in a hurry and enjoyed our coffee and the lovely atmosphere."

  • "but the wait for each of our courses was much longer than usual."

  • "I have been to Cafe Berlin many times, and I'm usually very happy with the experience. My recent visit was an exception. The food continues to be wonderful. My wife and I both ordered the the wild boar special, and we were quite pleased. The beer list is not long but contains good choices to go with food. However, the service this time was very slow. We put in our orders, got our beer, ate our appetizer, and waited for our entrees. Our waitress came through the room many times but never made eye contact. By the time our half-liters were almost gone, I stopped a staff member and asked him to find out what happened to our food. To his credit, he came back with our orders quite quickly--how long had they been waiting?"

  • "I was wrong! Everything we ordered was delicious. I was so happy with the food and the entire experience, my husband was blown away by the beer list. My husband and I brought along our 20 month old daughter. She was not cooperating at all, but the wait staff bent over backwards to help us keep her happy and distracted. I ended up taking left overs home because the portions were so large, and the food may have been the best leftovers I've ever eaten. Looking forward to going back on a date night - sans child :)"

  • "I eat at Cafe Berlin whenever I'm on Capitol Hill. The food is always excellent and my latest experience was as good as always. I notice that they have added a number of interesting beer cocktails to their outstanding beer selection. The staff is always very pleasant and accommodating. The food is always a treat. Cafe Berlin is a favorite for my whole family."

  • "We started with the Bretzels and I got the Schnitzel Sandwich. Wunderbar. Since it was a business lunch I didn't get a beer, which is sad for since they have some great choices. It's a small and very nice place to go. Service is very good, I would have appreciated a little more water, but they were very friendly."

  • "Good choice for pre-theatre snacks or meal. Service was very responsive when told of our theatre time and expedited our choices. Only tried several appetizer items, but all were very good to excellent. Good wine list choices at reasonable prices. Will definitely visit again when next in D.C."

  • "We were looking forward to a good German meal on my husband's birthday, but I think we should have tried the beef dishes instead, they looked good. Beer was good."

  • "Cafe Berlin has a great selection of authentic German food and beers. Service was friendly and effective, with the food coming out quickly. The only negative was the food quality for the price. I understand it needs to be expensive to stay in business in D.C., but the price still seems a bit too high. Furthermore, while the entrees had a solid German taste, the portion sizes were too small to be considered truly German. However, for the average person, the meals will be hearty enough. I recommend you try Cafe Berlin."

  • "While housed in a modest but agreeable location, Café Berlin offers tasty and generous portions on the food side, and a satisfying selection of beers that meet the standards for German brewing. We went for lunch and chose sandwiches which were very good as was the spinach salad, soup and potato pancakes. We were able to eat in a leisurely fashion and had a pleasant time. This is a restaurant to visit especially in the summer since I think the sidewalk ambience would enhance the experience. The overall experience was good."

  • "This visit was the first time I was there for Brunch. I thought I knew what I'd be ordering when I got there (my usual), but a totally different menu. But, what was offered was many choices and what I selected was delicious. Oh, and we saved room for dessert also. As usual, a wonderful visit"

  • "Anybody can use a different language on their menu, but the food at Cafe Berlin has to be described in German. It is the real thing, authentic in taste and presentation."

  • "Cafe Berlin is one of the few German restaurants in Washington. The menu changes often so it's easy to become a regular customer and have something new each time. Charming place!"

  • "Met an old friend in Washington DC as this restaurant was in his neighborhood. Given my German heritage, was intrigued because there are not a lot of German restaurants anywhere. This one exceeded my expectations. Located in the street level of a charming DC rowhouse on Mass Avenue, was first impressed by GREAT beer list! Took the recommendation of my waiter for an excellent dark beer. Had the rockfish entree. Topped it off with German cheesecake. When I say I want to go back to this place with my wife, i can pay it no higher compliment! Service was excellent and attentive!"

  • "During our recent stop in DC we dined here. The staff were fantastic and they made us feel like locals, regulars and friends. They can be trusted to make great recommendations and are excited about the cuisine. We really enjoyed the seasonal game menu--wild boar sausage and ribs and venison schnitzel. Do something different with your dinner plans tonight, dine here!"

  • "Solidly good authentic German food, with some creative flair on the seasonal menu. The beer selection is wonderful. But don't come here if you are on a diet!"

  • "We walked from near the White House to eat here. That was one long walk. It was worth it. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. I reccomend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good German meal"

  • "This is a lovely little restaurant, neither trendy nor rarified, but it will amply satisfy your craving for German food, much if not all is made on spot. As you dine, you'll see massive glasses of German beer pass by on trays, and he numbers increase with warm weather and the outdoor dining scene. There are many special touches, like a featherlight homemade potato spread for bread. The owners, chefs, and wait staff haven't lost their connection to Germany -- by any degree."

  • "I booked a table at Cafe Berlin for Valentine's Day. There was supposed to be a special $35 or $42 for three course meals, champagne and chocolates. I requested a window table two weeks in advance. We arrive early, and ushered to a corner back room table. I asked about the window table I saw, but was told it was for someone else. When the waiter came, I asked about the Champagne and Chocolates, he looked confused and asked where I had heard this. I showed him the website on my phone and he talked to the manager and we received our champagne, but never got the chocolates. My wife and I were looking for a nice night out and we received complications. The night could have been a lot better."
