A word from Cafe Berlin
Café Berlin has been serving authentic German and traditional cuisine on Capitol Hill since 1985. It occupies the ground floor of three townhouses whose front yards serve as patio for outdoor dining. The interior features a small bar and two cozy dining rooms. The restaurant is located within a
…
short walking distance of Union Station and the U.S. Capitol. It draws politicians, congressional staffer, and tourists as well a loyal following of neighborhood residents. The traditional dishes are authentically prepared with lighter touch by chefs with extensive experience in German cuisine. In addition to the regular menu, the restaurant offer seasonally changing menus that feature fresh asparagus in the spring, salads and light fares in the summer, Bavarian dishes during Oktoberfest in the fall, and wild game in the winter. Desserts which are freshly made in-house include apple strudel, black forest cake, and luscious cream tortes. The bar offers a selection of imported German beers.

We have been to Cafe Berlin several times. Our most recent visit was a warm April night, and we dined in the outside courtyard. The food and beer were all that we've come to expect. However, the service was remarkably slow. It seemed to get slower as the meal went on. Our entrees took longer than expected. We could see our waiter come and go while we waited for the dessert tray, for our check, for our receipt, etc. By the end, I was sitting, pen in hand, so that I could sign the charge slip and get out. This has not been our usual experience at Cafe Berlin. I hope it isn't a sign of things to come.

Sat inside as it was a bit chilly for our group; will return to sit in the outdoor area which looks charming and comfortable (chair cushions!). Nice selection of fish; important for pescetarian friend. Two of us had specials, two had regular-menu items; everyone VERY pleased. No one saved room for desert, which we regretted upon eyeing the selections in the glass refrigerator case when leaving the restaurant. Waiter was superb: helpful and perfect amount of attention.

Told my wife we were going out for 'ethnic food' - - I don't know that this was exactly what she was expecting!
Weather was pleasant, so we sat outside in the front courtyard. Ambiance was cozy due to landscaping. Delicious roast boar medallions were the special of the day, and Jagerschnitzel from the menu was wonderful. Topped off with draft pilsner and a dobblebock.

I had been here at least a few times a year over the past 15 years and always found at least one vegetarian option -- some very good. Went there for Easter brunch and there were no vegetarian entrees on the menu, no veg soups, only one salad without meat or fish ingredients. My only options were a potato pancake appetizer (over cooked) and an ad hoc "vegetable platter" -- smashed potatoes, topped with a portabello mushroom and some green beans -- very bland with no sauce and barely any seasoning -- and a small bowl of brown rice on the side. I was charged about $18 for this "entree." When I remarked about the lack of veg options, I was told that it was Easter and they expected a lot of people. I won't go again!

The service was excellent, even though there was only one server for approximately 15-20 tables in our area. There were only two minor glitches: the entree arrived just as we took the last bite of appetizer (too fast), and the check was too slow in coming. The ambiance was excellent, very cute place inside. The food was wonderful. Jaegerschnitzel was tender, tasty and perfectly done. The brown gravy was spectacular.

Very good German and lighter international dishes delivered with friendly, efficient service in a great (seasonal) outdoor ambiance. Very convenient to public transportation and to cheap parking in Union Station. A great place to return to with friends for a long evening of good conversation.

This is our second time here. My husband had the weiner schnitzel and I had the Hungarian goulash (beef). Both times the food was bland. The beef was tender but flavorless. The spatzele equally flavorless. The dessert cake - chocolate - was dry. It's too bad. My husand lived in Germany and I've been and we love the food but this isn't the place.
