This time I went with my boyfriend for his birthday, and we chose to sit in the bar. I prefer the bar, though I've dined in the restaurant on a couple of occasions. The bacon wrapped dates, spicy potatoes and goat cheese in marinara sauce are all musts. This time we tried the cheese plate and fried green peppers too. We were trying tapas for the first time and found it a perfect meal before a show. The service was quick and the food light. The waiter was very helpful explaining how to order tapas to create a nice little meal. We had the goat cheese croquettes - warm and creamy, with delicate breading. We also a spread for bread, a meat/poultry tapas apiece, and a spinach/manchego filled mushroom (my favorite). The only disappointment was garlic potato salad, which, although tasty, was ordinary and did not seem to fit in with the rest of the meal. Unaccountably, there was also a huge amount of it. We have come here in the past with wonderful results. The food and atmosphere is always amazing, but when we reserved the table, and when we checked in, we were not told that there was renovation happening and they couldn't make paella. We always come for the paella, and were disappointed that we couldn't order it. The meatballs-you can skip those too. Not the best. Shrimp with garlic-awesome! Moorish chicken-excellent. For desert we got the churros-which were my favorite! The marcona almond butter-amazing! And the apple empanada-which was pretty good. We got the blood orange sangria. The service was great, and our server was informative and attentive. The food was outstanding and came out to the table hot. We had the Pinxtos Platter to start, then the stuffed mushrooms, rioja-braised short ribs, shrimp, and spicy potatoes. I loved trying all of the different dishes and everything was very flavorful. Even my boyfriend (who is a picky eater) enjoyed it. We also ordered a pitcher of sangria which was more than enough for the two of us. For dessert we had the caramelized banana and the chocolate truffle cake. Yum! The real treat was that the bill was very reasonable. It was loaded with great stuff to put in your drink, 3 different mixes, and variety of top shelf vodkas. That's only the beginning of the yumminess. The food was amazing! The hostess was very nice and sat us at a table for 4 as soon as we arrived. Our waitress was an older lady who was sweet and had our order placed and brought to our table in a very timely manner. We ordered a variety of tapas and loved each one, we ordered a couple more and they were also brought to our table very quickly. Water was refilled without asking and we were asked if we wanted another pitcher of sangria when they saw ours was getting near the end. We had an 8 p.m.show to attend at the Royal George...had plenty of time to walk the few blocks to theater and be seated before the show began. Every item we ordered was perfectly crafted. The waiter was very helpful with suggestions for choices. Loved the idea of the small servings for dessert. We were able to try four of the six offerings without feeling terribly guilty about ordering so many. When the serving sizes only include four bites of each it works great.
