A word from Cafe Aion
The traditional Italian merenda or Spanish tapa is a simple but beautiful offering. Its presentation is honest and straightforward, its preparation a tribute to the craft and techniques developed over centuries in the homes, farms, and humble taverns of Italy and Spain. It is served in an atmosphere that is convivial and relaxed—a setting to suit the food's essential virtues.

We aspire to cultivate this tradition in our own local soil. We gather our ingredients from farmers, ranchers and fishmongers we know and admire, and we draw upon the time-honored practices of the osteria and tapas bar as we cook for our friends and neighbors.

We arrived before 6, in time for happy hour. I was pleasantly surprised by the tempranillo special that day. Fruity and perfect for a warm evening. We loved the boquerones, pork sliders as tapas. I had pork shoulder for dinner, which was amazing--tender, flavorful, not fatty. My dinner companion had the burger -- juicy and generous. Sweet potato fries were also yummy. The food was excellent, but prices were reasonable. Our server slipped me in for a 2nd glass of wine at happy hour price (nice!). My only complaint -- very, very quiet. The location (on the hill in Boulder) may not be best choice for an up-scale restaurant. patio was great. I would recommend it. With more foodies there, atmosphere will improve!

Food was good, but very overpriced considering the proportions. Waitress was friendly and knowledgeable, but was completely in the weeds when we got there. There didn't seem to be a hostess, so we stood there for five minutes before we were acknowledged (not an exaggeration). Once sat, it was easily seven minutes before a drink order was taken. The waitress started out by telling us that they were out of several items, and that some of the ingredients they were out of would make other dishes impossible. Drinks came five minutes after ordering. We ordered the Lamb Flatbread, which was served over greens because they were out of flatbread. Paid something like $16 for two rather small pieces of lamb. Don't think I would ever go back....

Our first time at Aion Cafe was definitely a five star experience in every way, so when our foodie friends came to visit, we looked to Aion to give us a great dining experience. Our food was delicious, although the char was a bit too salty. The service was very disappointing and took away from everyone's enjoyment of the meal. Ah well, we will give it another try sometime, but probably not bring a large group in the future.

Place was empty. CU students on break. The wait person was delightful. We ate outside under an umbrella in a light rain (our choice). The food was very so-so. Had the Wednesday $49 for 2 Paella + bottle of wine special. Clearly Moroccan and not Spanish as we had hoped, so no sea food. The meat tasted like mutton, not spring lamb. Sad to say, wouldn't go back to try again. Because of the many alternatives in Boulder County no reason to try again.

I drove over 2100 miles from Maine to experience Dakota's paella.....and it was worth every mile. Selected the special of the evening and a number of tapas options. The presentation was beautiful with bold rich color and flavor. A glass of sangria after the hot day on the plains could only have been improved with a second...but alas...there was a drive to Denver. I'll be back....with others!

Delightful breakfast on Father's Day. They moved patio tables to accommodate our party of six outside. Great French press coffee, orange juice, bacon, short ribs with eggs. My Croissant was shared by the table and everyone raved, it is extremely buttery, all wanted more. Service was very welcoming, accommodating and friendly, also very busy. Would recommend to others and go back again when in town.

The food was magnificent. The paella to share (Paella de la casa) was tasty and just the right amount. The tapas were outstanding especially the spring vegetable soup and the fried cauliflower with toasted cumin, saffron, yogurt and lemon. The dessert ice cream with EVO and sea salt was a new. delightful experience. The wait staff was knowledgeable and extremely helpful in explaining the menu. And visiting a little with us. We actually had a great time. The service in general was fine. We had dinner but I would expect the same fine food and service for lunch. Would recommend this to anyone who loves adventure in eating. The venue is small, but was not crowded. Reservations recommended.

Lots of delicious small plates! The knowledgeable waitress set me up with a nice Rose. We tried the grilled cauliflower mentioned in other reviews and liked it a lot. We combined that with the sauteed kale and the cool quinoa with mint and apricots. Those were a nice medley of hot and cold dishes- as suggested by the waitress. The next small plates came a little quickly. Would have liked more stagger personally- so maybe request your order be staggered a bit. The Lamb sausage was delicious on flatbread- much like a greek sandwich with yogurt and greens. Hawaiian prawns were a bit of a mess but nice hand towels make that all good. Its be nice to have a larger group so we could try more!

This place is the best place to have lunch on the hill, near CU. For visiting speakers, it's perfect, and they always love the food here. It's also quiet enough (usually) that it's a good place to talk. I do appreciate it though when they tone down the music. Tapas, sandwiches, entrees, they're all great.

We were seated right away. I would recommend reservations as the restaurant is small and two large walks up were turned away due to no reservations. Wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable. My experience at Cafe Aion was very disappointing. I had eaten there before and enjoyed it. However, the night I was there, they were seriously understaffed. They had only two waiters for the dining room and the outside patio, all full. With important events happening at CU, they should have known they would have a crowd. It took us quite a while to get our glass of wine. I had to call the waiter over so that we could finally order. However, after being there for an hour and a half, we paid for our wine and left, never having received our food. It was very loud and not an experience I would like to repeat.

We were really disappointed with our food experience. We ordered tapas to start. The the cauliflower was amazing, but the chicken wings had very little flavor and the potatoes were soggy. Then we ordered the Paella De La Casa for the table and one of us ordered the Brie Burger, and all of us were extremely displeased. The Paella De La Casa included overcooked muscles, boiled chicken that was super gamey tasting and tough (none of us could eat it), and over cooked, tough, burnt sausage. The rice tasted good, but when you pay $40 for a dish, you don't want the rice to be the only appetizing thing on the plate. The burger itself - very little flavor, the bun was soggy and the fries were over-seasoned and soggy. Sad. Drinks were great.

For a restaurant with food this good, we we really surprised by how poor the service was on all accounts: 1) the hostess was unfriendly and the only table available for our 'reservation' was a high-top bar table with no seat-backs that got quite uncomfortable 2) it was a good 15 minutes before our drink order was taken 3) waitress rolled her eyes when we said we hadn't been there before and we asked about what the best things on the menu were. She was very curt with us taking our order. 4) long wait for drinks, longer wait for appetizers 5) entree order apparently not placed, even longer wait 6) had to ask for water refills multiple times The food was really good, so we will probably go back - just be ready for bad service if you go.

I love Cafe Aion's brunch. It simply cannot be beat. However, after trying them for dinner, I think their dinner menu (at least restaurant week dinner menu) was a bit underwhelming. Great first and dessert, but the entree was nothing special (although certainly not bad). I don't hate the restaurant, but our meal was disappointing. The tables are too close together - no chance of private conversation. The food was underwhelming. The crispy cauliflower was a large portion but it wasn't crispy but it was greasy. Next we both had the fish stew. Messy and difficult to eat. It resembled a bouillabaisse, but with the wrong seasonings. It included shrimp that had been tossed in whole (seriously, couldn't you at least chop off the heads?) and were overcooked (mushy). Then came desert. It was a chocolate torte. The torte would have been delicious if they had omitted the red pepper. The pepper spoiled it.
