Diner Reviews
  • "Lunch at Cafe 43 was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The venue within the George Bush Presidential Library is along the periphery of the SMU campus, and Cafe 43 sits overlooking a beautifully simple hillside field and the campus beyond. We sat in a relatively small patio area and enjoyed a lovely Spring afternoon. Service was excellent, if not particularly sophisticated. The server did guide and advise us quite well. The choices on the menu made selection difficulty - everything sounded terrific. in fact, both of us enjoyed uniquely Texan lunch salads that were truly outstanding. Fresh bread added to the meal. The wine list is a bit short and, perhaps, too local in emphasis, but the overall experience, food, and service were delightful"

  • "We enjoyed ourselves. Would have liked a local Kosher Wine option. Also, I would love to meet friends for lunch if you would validate parking. Many of us have already seen the amazing museum - but would enjoy returning for brunch or lunch."

  • "After having toured the George W. Bush Museum, we had a delightful lunch at Cafe 43. The atmosphere was so enjoyable and the food, especially the peace cobbler, was delicious. Highly recommended for lunch. Being a visitor to Denton, Texas from NYC, I was excited to tour the museum. I must say that Cafe 43 was an added bonus!"

  • "Attached to the fabulous George W. Bush Presidential Library, and continuing the theme with the title "43", the restaurant provides a great place to complete your visit with a tasty dish. Stark walls and high ceilings with tasteful art allow you to feel quite regal while looking out on the surrounding natural landscape and the SMU campus adjoining. The menu is not overwhelming with choices, but adequate for most, I expect. Quality is good, service attentive and pricing is not excessively pricey. It's an unusual and very impressive place for lunch with a client - especially if they're "red" in political leanings! Don't miss the small bag of chocolate-chip cookies to finish off the sweet taste of your visit!"

  • "Since I am unable to eat grains, dairy or eggs, it is difficult finding restaurants willing to specially prepare a meal. They were able to modify the trout on their menu. They sautéed it in olive oil and flavored it with tarragon, and served it with a wonderful, colorful assortment of flavorful roast vegetables instead of the creamed kale that usually came with it."

  • "From seating to service to dessert, our experience at Cafe 43 was splendid. We enjoyed brunch before a tour of the Library. The Benedict was prepared just perfectly and we were encouraged to try dessert - a grilled carrot cake with thick and rich cream cheese cream on top and throughout. Yum - just delightful! Highly recommend."

  • "Our party of 4 dined at Cafe 43 prior to touring the Bush Library. Everyone enjoyed the food, service and ambiance. I would love to come in the afternoon, sit on the porch and drink a glass of wine. That would be a piece of Texas Heaven."

  • "My sister and I had a great dining experience when we ate at Cafe 43 for my birthday. The menu at first looked limited, but the variety of options made it hard to choose. We ended up splitting a salad, then having our own entree. I wish the weather would have been nicer so we could sit outside to eat - we will definitely have to come back to do that! And, didn't have a chance to get dessert, but will have to do that next time too!"

  • "Cafe 43, for the 43rd President of the U.S., is a great way to top off a tour of the Bush LIbrary. The ambiance is elegant, yet friendly. Service is top-notch. The food was excellent; wine is available. The arugula/tiger shrimp salad was large and tasty. Our party tried 3 different sandwiches, each arriving on a different bread and appropriate bread. The fish sandwich, the pulled pork, and the chicken sandwich were all excellent. They were so large that the next time we visit, we will share. You can dine there without touring the library/museum, so we may go back sometime just for lunch now that we have visited the center, which, by the way, was something every American should see to get a sense of the history of that era."

  • "After visiting the Bush Library, my family and I enjoyed a fantastic meal at Cafe 43. I don't know if the menu items are some of the Bush's favorites, but they quickly became mine. I had the French Dip sandwich and it was AMAZING! The fresh fruit served with it was also very good. They serve bread sticks and a cheese crisp thingy prior to your meal, and we all really enjoyed it. We also tried the banana pecan ice cream, which is my favorite flavor, and it was just OK. The service was outstanding."

  • "This is a great place for lunch. I would go there even if I was not touring the Bush Library. Prices are reasonalbe and the food was really good. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries. Tasted great. The slaw on the top could have had a little of sauce to it. The spinach salad was really good. Highly recomment having some Cowboy cookes for desert. The interior is very pleasant with large windows."

  • "On our visit to Bush library we decided to have lunch at the Cafe. The food, location and service were all outstanding with a great selection of salads, soups and meals. The servers were very professional and did a great job answers questions and delivering the food. I would recommend this if you are visiting the library."

  • "A great place for brunch or lunch. The service was outstanding, the atmosphere was invigorating, and the food was just as good as its presentation. All in all, the menu was a culinary delight for any palate. From the salads to the sandwiches while adding a touch of banana/pecan ice cream for dessert, the meal was superb and would satisfy the most discriminating of tastes."

  • "I was truly disappointed after visiting the incredible Bush Library to eat at Cafe 43 The food needs to "step it up" , try Nordstroms Cafe to see a delicious salad presentation The staff seems attentive but not friendly??? in Texas???"

  • "This is a restaurant strictly for people visiting the Bush Library, as the parking alone is $7.00 and covers the visit to the museum. The restaurant is within the confines of the museum building and is a perfect place to relax with excellent food before or after visiting the Bush Library. My shrimp salad was excellent but the crab cake salad wasn't perfect. The carrot cake Panini was superb and very different! Service was attentive, personal and excellent. Highly recommended."

  • "Recently we visited the Bush Library and Museum with out-of-state friends. We chose to have lunch at the Cafe 43 although there are many restaurants in the area. We were not disappointed. The four of us chose the fish sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich, the vegetable panini and the chicken sandwich. All choices were delicious. No one was disappointed. The breads were outstanding. We also had mimosas and a bloody Mary. Perfect! We were much too full for dessert but decided to share some of Laura Bush's cookies - delicious! I highly recommend adding this to your day on your visit to the museum."

  • "I had an out of town guest with me and was totally embarrassed by the inept service we received. They honored my reservation but, as an Open Table VIP, we were seated at an undesirable table in an almost empty restaurant. The wait person talked by rote, removed two table settings while telling us the daily specials, never checked on us, talked to people at two other tables that she obviously knew and totally ignored us. The assistant spilled water on the table while refilling glasses and did not wipe it up. I had to ask for the check and then when she never came back, I had to go over to the table she was talking to and looking at their computer, and give her my credit card. I'm sure she was baffled when she received a minimal gratuity."

  • "Our group was evenly divided between brunch selections and lunch selections. Everyone was in love with what they ordered. The server was very friendly and gave great descriptions of dishes. We were seated immediately with our reservation. Just as we were leaving a large tour of probably 40 people came in and had immediate seating, so I think they do a great job of accommodating those with reservations. It was the perfect way to kick-off our tour of the Bush Library."

  • "We were advised by friends who had been to the restaurant to make reservations. So we made those on line easily. It was great to be able to include lunch with our visit to the President George Bush Library and Museum. The whole visit was great and the food was a nice addition. The menu items were reflective of the preferred and served food at the White House during the Bush presidency. Excellent food and service."

  • "During a recent tour of the new George W Bush Presidential Library we had decided to have lunch at Cafe 43. I had a made a reservation for us through the internet for 11:45 and we arrived about 10 minutes early but were promptly seated. Our server was friendly and efficient. One item to order is the butternut squash soup, it was wonderful. We ordered a chicken sandwich and 2 short rib French dip sandwiches. To my taste buds the chicken had too much rosemary...the waiter was more than welling to bring me something else but I traded sandwiches with my friend. She loved the rosemary chicken and I loved the French Dip. The french fries were OK but would have been better served hot and crispy. Would return any time to dine there again."

  • "Our dining experience at Cafe 43 was exceptional indeed! The light, bright atmosphere added to the excellent service made for a very enjoyable lunch. The four members of our party each ordered different entrees. From hamburger to crab cake to grilled salmon salad, all were delicious with beautiful presentations. For dessert, the griddled carrot cake with cream cheese was our choice. It was superb! After a delightful lunch, we were ready to continue our tour of the George W Bush Library & Museum. We highly recommend it to one & all."
