  • "I've been going to this restaurant for last 2 years quite often and absolutely love their food. Spinach and feta crapes are outstanding and so is the flat iron steak salad. Breakfast dishes are delish."

  • "This was our first time here. Food was very good and fresh. We ordered a pesto presto sandwich was delicious. Teas are all individually prepared. Portions are hearty."

  • "We went to Cafe 21 on a Monday night with a group of five. The restaurant is trendy inside and the menu appeared to have different, exciting things to eat. The service through the night was extremely slow and they kept forgetting to bring things we ask for. The sangria and food were not anything I would order again. Overall the night was a bust."

  • "Terrific food, generous portions, and several sangria options. Will come back be t time."

  • "Our party of four absolutely loved Cafe 21. I had the best short rib that I've ever tasted. Drinks were excellent. Ambiance was relaxed and friendly but also perfectly suitable for a romantic date. This is a must visit restaurant in the Gaslamp!"

  • "Curate's egg of a place. Service very good but chaotic. Main course served within three minutes of starters which were excellent.. They took it away again but to where? Server forgot coffe order then delivered really old cup which was refused I did not have to taste I could smell it was burned from a distance. Azeberjian platter pretty ordinary but rib steak good."

  • "Cafe 21 is a great spot! We've enjoyed lunch & dinner there several times. The braised lamb sandwich on the lunch menu is my favorite. The short ribs are the best for dinner. Their crepes are also very good as is their burgundy sangria. Try to get a seat in the front of the restaurant though as it's very hot in the back and no air conditioning. I did hear they are moving soon to the old Croce's restaurant spot which will be much larger and more suitable for them. Definitely a great place for lunch or dinner. Prices are reasonable and the staff is super friendly!"

  • "I have been to cafe 21 a number of times and always loved both food and service at any time of day. This was not a good visit for breakfast. Staff was very slow and disorganized. Menu was lacking in variety seemed only to have cakes or omelets, no simple egg choices, I had the curry cakes which tasted as if somebody had just sprinkled curry powder on left over chicken and threw it on the plate--really awful. My business colleague had an omelet that was very overcooked and dry. I was embarrassed at suggesting this restaurant."

  • "The food and drinks are amazing - such fresh ingredients and prepared well. The presentation is great too. The staff is equally as amazing! Everyone is extremely attentive and friendly. These are the types of people that all restaurants should hire! We had such a great experience at this restaurant - there's a reason why it gets so busy! Highly recommend."

  • "Looks low-key but the food is top-notch. The short rib omelette and tiramisu pancakes were extremely tasty. My friends enjoyed their sandwiches but one of them thought it could use avocado or another topping."

  • "This place is simply delightful! From food to service I recommend this place to anyone craving good food. Their cast iron short rib omelet and cast iron drunken cherry pancakes are to die for! And if you are a tea lover, make sure to order some hot tea...the experience is exilarating! At least it was for me. :)"

  • "Cafe 21 does an amazing job with its changing menu and sangria selection. Everything we have is always spectacular and it is fun to try their various sangrias."

  • "I chose the restaurant for dining with some out of town guests based on online reviews. It did not disappoint. Nice variety on the menu, including fare for my vegetarian friend. Very tasty and interesting, huge salads fit for sharing, hearty portions on the entrees, good wine, reasonable prices. Definitely a winner!"

  • "The food here was great quality, wonderfully cooked, but- expensive, tiny portions, expensive weak drinks- but they have a great flavor."

  • "Packed on the weekends, if you have a reservation go early to find parking because it's most likely going to take awhile. If you don't have a reservation prepare to wait for awhile unless you have a huge party. We waited almost over an hour for two people without a reservation when we went the next day for brunch."

  • "A great change of pace with a unique menu selection. It's also located right in the center of activity. However we were all the way inside and it was too loud and too warm. Try to sit outside if you can."

  • "A little something for everyone. The fried avocado with the chipotle and goat cheese crema was delicious. The kabob platter and short ribs were also very tasty. Will be back."

  • "I dined alone during a business trip & after an imposter used my reservation to claim a seat, was met with great front if house service to accommodate me immediately. I ordered the chop salad w/ grilled chicken & it would've been delicious but completely lacked seasoning, in the salad veggies, the dressing & the chicken. I had high hopes for a creative farm-to-table menu but sad that the lovely organic ingredients weren't enhanced by cooking technique or s & p."

  • "Was there Sat night for dinner, group of 8. Reservation at 7:00 pm. Ordered drinks, which took about 20-30 minutes to arrive. Then ordered appetizers. Looked at my watch, now 8:00 and no food served yet. At some point, ordered our dinner entrees. Flatbread appetizers came, got eaten quickly because they were delicious. 9:00 pm, waiting around, ordering more drinks, dinner finally served after 2 hours of being there. Entrees were generously sized. Split the rib eye steak with my husband, which was delicious, esp the brussel sprouts. Also had the braised duck wing appetizer, which was OK. Tasty but a lot of flabby duck skin. Overall, we enjoyed our dining experience, and luckily, none of us were in a hurry to get anywhere in particular."

  • "Food was great. I loved the variety on the menu - we had scallops and short ribs and both were excellent. Salad and desert were also great. The only thing wanting was that it took a very long time to get our food. We only ordered a salad and the main dishes and it took almost 1 hour and 45 minutes. From when we ordered, it took almost 30 minutes to get the salad. Maybe they were just very busy that night. Still, I would definitely go back for the food."

  • "I found the Cafe 21 is in a great location.....very convenient in midst of gaslamp sector. The decor is unique and eclectic, however, the music was too loud. We found ourselves having to raise our voices to be heard over dinner, and we were sitting at a small table. The food and service was good and the ambiance was nice. Wouldn't go back unless it was for lunch or a late night drink/ snack."

  • "Service was fair at best. It took an hour for our entrees to be served. The noise level at the restaurant was too loud you couldn't hear the conversations around the table. I had very high hopes as I have been to cafe 21 for breakfast and had a good experience. I was highly Disappointed."

  • "My family and I love Cafe 21 for the fantastic food and awesome service. Whether we just walk in unplanned or make a reservation for a family get-together we're always treated like royalty by Corey, Brian and the rest of the staff and you've got to know already that you have the Gaslamp's best food. I'm not crazy about the sangria but everyone else in my family love it. We all miss the old flat bread appetizers. Any thought to bringing them back?"

  • "My daughters went to Café 21 before an event at the Civic Theatre. We had some of the tapas, along with stuffed chicken breast and a great salad with a chicken skewer. Not only was the food fantastic, but the manager and wait staff were all friendly and seemed to enjoy their jobs. Oh, and the tropical sangria was refreshing, with a coconut- fruity taste. We were so impressed, we went back after our show for flourless chocolate cake and hot tea! Would recommend it to anyone, and already have."

  • "I would highly recommend Cafe 21 if you are in the San Diego area. The food was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The staff was friendly and helpful. I can't say enough positive things about his place. Go!"

  • "Fantastic food, with efficient and polite service, but the waits for the food to arrive are fairly long, but well worth the wait when it finally arrives. Great value, considering the quality."

  • "I've been here twice and had two very different but equally fantastic experiences. The first time I came for lunch with a few girlfriends and thought the food was fabulous, even though the restaurant was busy the service was excellent and the bloody mary was seriously noteworthy! The next time I came with a group of 7 for happy hour. The restaurant easily accommodated our larger group and continually checked in on us. We had quite a few items off the tapas menu that was on special and everything was worth coming back for. It was interesting food, but not too exotic if you have people in your party who are wary of new foods. The sangria flight was absolutely fabulous and if you only get one thing-get the creme brûlée cheesecake!"

  • "My friends, our mentor (60s), and I went here for a reunion and it was a great experience. We reserved a table for six in the late-morning. That experience through OpenTable was smooth. When I arrived 10 minutes before our reservation the table was ready; in the late-morning, the restaurant was half-full. We took about 30 minutes order, another 30 minutes to receive our food, and 30 minutes to finish our food; all of us really liked what we ordered. We stayed for another hour and a half to talk, and the restaurant seemed not to mind. by early afternoon, the restaurant was about 3/4 full."

  • "It was our second dinner in less than a week and was a real disappointment. Our server didn't seem to get it, his mind was elsewhere. And the crispy pork belly had to be sent back as it was undercooked and no signs of crispness. On its return I had half the quantity of pork that had been returned, but did not complain. Meanwhile my pork was being sorted they left my husband with his meal in front of him getting cold. And his chicken entree was fairly ordinary. So thumbs down I am afraid."

  • "it was just me for one night in san diego - and it was nice to visit the tiny gas lamp quarter. I booked cafe 21 after reading reviews and looking at the menu online. the appetizer of the chicken crepe was innovative and very delicious, and my entree of the afghan kebabs was also quite good. I'm glad I ate there - and it's worth a visit!"

  • "My meal, the curried scallops, was delicious! Unfortunately, my group was seated right below a speaker with generic but loud music.. We could not hear each other. I asked the waitress to turn it down a little and watched as she walked around but never did anything about it. The bench on my side of the table had no padding and became uncomfortable. The bench on the other side of the table was padded but did not have a back to it, which eventually became uncomfortable for my friends. The dinner took a long time to cook, but that didn't concern us since we were not in a hurry. However, I liked the ambiance, the food was delicious, and the host was very nice. If you go, ask for padding and a chair with a back & try the Jalapeno Margarita!"

  • "My husband and I made a reservation for 15 following our small wedding! but all 15 in our group didn't show up. I know some resturants would have been frustrated but Cafe 21 did not mind at all! The whole team was so sweet in congratulating us and made us feel very special. They also let us bring in our small cake and offered to help us cut it. My friends, family, and husband truly enjoyed all the food and atmoshpere! It was a great place to celebrate our special day!!!"

  • "Food was superb and presentation excellent. We ordered and appetizer and entree and shared both. We were delighted with the size of the portions but more important the quality of the food. Definitely would be at the top of our list next time we are in this part of the country"

I thought the food was very nicely prepared and looked as good as it tasted. Good portions and great atmosphere give for a great experience. I would highly recommend Cafe 21 to anyone visiting the Sam Diego."

  • "The staff here are so accommodating! First we were late for our reservation but was able to seat us right away despite how busy it was. Then they were considerate with our "time constraints" taking and getting our orders in right away. We had the mimosa flight good choice when you can't make up your mind. Entrees were delicious! Lamb shank, crispy pork belly, and one of the specials of the night, blackened rib eye. The lamb was perfect and falling off the bone, the pork was sweet and savory. The best part of that dish was the apple potatoes(WHAT?) yes AppleMashedPotatoes! The rib eye was just as you expected, tender and juicy. Make sure you ask for an order of Brussel sprouts (WHAT?)yes brussel sprouts! Crispy sweet and with a kick!"
