Diner Reviews
  • "This would be the 2nd time we've been here, and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time. I don't know Santa Barabara a whole lot, but this would be a great restaurant I would recommend to anyone. The food was great! There were a variety of tapas available as well, so I can see myself coming here after work for some drinks and tapas. The service was great. Very attentive, and made sure we had everything we need. We were there on a week night, so there weren't too many people there, but I'd imagine it gets busy on the weekend considering it's on one of the busiest streets of Santa Barabara."

  • "I crave Chef Alex's food all week long! I love that I am on a first name basis with the staff now. The hostess is adorable and always remember what we last talked about. The food quality is the most consistent in town. I am never disappointed whichever day of the week I am here. M/y latest obsession is the Italian Chardonnay, Tormaresca paired with the new Halibut. I am looking forward to trying to some new things next time!"

  • "We were there on a quiet Sunday evening for a birthday celebration. The service was lackluster. Most restaurants will bring a free dessert for those with a birthday, nothing was brought or offered. The menu is diverse and different, and the restaurant feels cozy. We all left full of good food, but with the feeling we really weren't wanted. I think we just hit a poor night."

  • "If allowed, I would give Cadiz a "10". Food and service were both excellent. The ambiance is so nice, including the background music. We dined between 6 and 7 PM on Saturday night. My husband and I will definitely be returning here."

  • "My husband and I had such a great dinner at Cadiz last month that we returned again this month, along with another couple. We were not disappointed. Everything was just as wonderful. The service was prompt and professional, and the dishes were delicious. The lamb meatballs, the scallops and the duck were all standouts. And the lemon tart for dessert was scrumptious. My husband requested that we sit on the front patio, but next time I think we'll dine inside so that we can enjoy the rich Moorish decor and architecture."

  • "This has been a favorite of mine since they opened. The menu only gets better and better. Ever since they have steered more in Italian Seaside end of the cuisine I have found myself going more and more. The fact that they have complimentary valet now is what makes mine and my boyfriends decision so easy. We pull right up to the back door and just a few short steps later feel like we stepped into the South of Italy. Kudos to Chef Alex and all that he has accomplished with the menu!"

  • "My Negroni cocktail was expertly made and the bartender brought over the 'extra'! Grilled baby octopus on lentils small plate was perfectly cooked and big enough for an entree. The rich mushroom risotto and ridge back shrimp dishes were tender and wonderful. The diver scallop small plate was magic - perfectly cooked scallop, bitter mustard green wisps, prosciutto pieces and a broth to bring it together.Ask for a spoon to enjoy each bite. When we return to town, we will return to Cadiz for another enjoyable meal. The prices were less than I would expect to pay which is unusual these days. Service was friendly and helpful. The space is beautiful and evocative of Spain. Great food for foodies and great bar drinks too. A grown up place!"

  • "The food at Cadiz was certainly interesting. We received 2 menus - drinks on one, the other with small bites on one side & entrees on the other. The small bites were small - need 2 for a dinner. Entrees were generous. The steak meal was huge. I had the mushroom risotto which was generous and very mushroomy. The atmosphere was light & airy and we were able to carry on a conversation without shouting. Service was a little on the slow side considering the restaurant was not full. May have been because it was Sunday evening? The plates I saw served to other tables looked very interesting. We went away full and satisfied."

  • "We had only two nights in Santa Barbara. I booked this restaurant without knowing anything except what I found on Open Table. We loved this restaurant so much on our first night (we had drinks, small plates, and dessert) that we went back our second night in town to try to the entrees. Every bite of food was fantastic. The waiter stopped himself from joking about how clean we left our plates (I do hate when waiters raise their eyes because you finished every bit), but we enjoyed it and didn't want to leave anything behind. Between the two nights, we had the octopus, lamb meatballs, beef skewers, carrot/beet salad, crab salad, Sicilian chicken, risotto con funghi, vanilla cake, lemon tart, and chocolate peanut butter crunch. All great!"

  • "I had a really nice time with my 86 year old mom. But I certainly can see myself with a group of friends, a date or a birthday party. The menu is not extensive but what we had was really yummy. The skewers, the bruschetta (done much differently) and my mom really enjoyed the oysters."

  • "The minute you walk in it's like being in southern Spain. This was the second time dining at Cadiz and it was even better than the first. Well prepared dishes, excellent and attentive service, ambiance and at fairly moderate prices. Highly recommended."

  • "We went Valentine's Day so there is always some stress. We were 45 min late for our table due to traffic but our reservation was still good and they were nice about it. If you are worried about too many calories or overeating you can put those concerns aside. If you eat slowly and enjoy the food you will fill-up on ample portions, but not over the top portions. We ate and participated in their set menu for the occasion. We saw almost all dishes come out of the kitchen and the tight seating (for Valentine's Day) allowed us to converse easily with other couples on couple's night. The "to die for" were oxtail gnochi, the pork dish, the two beef dish, and the desert winner was the chocolate selection. I met the owner Messina--delightful"

  • "I stopped in Cadiz for a very early dinner during the Santa Barbara Film Festival week. I was greeted by a friendly server and very well cared for by the bar staff. The restaurant felt very clean and the atmosphere was light. Recommendations from the bar in both the food and beverages were excellent. I had the most delicious scallops with proscuitto that were special to the menu that night. I can't wait for my next trip to SB to see what else Cadiz has in store."

  • "Every time I eat here the experience is more than enjoyable. The service is amazing, the food is unstoppable, and whenever the menu changes (even slightly) it's even more amazing than before. I highly recommend Cadiz for any occasion."

  • "We were looking for a place where we could visit with our friends and didn't have to yell over music and other noise. We found it! The food and service were terrific. Perfect place for an intimate dinner with friends."

  • "We arrived for our reservation just as 40 people arrived for a group dinner during the film festival. We were worried that we wouldn't be served for eons, but the owner assured us that our food would be served promptly, and it was. We loved the varieties of marinated olives, the scallops were perfectly prepared, the carrot and beet salad was wonderfully spiced and the lamb meatballs were rich and tasty, but our favorite was the pasta bolognese with fresh housemade pasta. The bolognese sauce was scrumptious. We ended with lemon tart. Yum yum. We also loved the setting. The restaurant is lovely."

  • "Went to this restaurant for a dinner interview. The place works well for this function as it isn't too noisy. The food as always is great, but the service could use improvement. I thought the service was better a year ago when I last went here. The waitress was very slow and somewhat of an airhead. Had to remind her multiple times for drinks. It wasn't because she was busy as the place was near empty."

  • "There are a ton of places to dine in SB, and I would definitely put this on your list! Nice cocktail list. Great small plates. Loved the olives and the dip trio. We arrived at 7:30 and had a great, quiet dinner. By 9:30 the place was packet with more of a hip crowd."

  • "The food in general was delicious! We had the Diver Scallops as an appetizer and they were excellent. My husband had the Coulotte Steak which was cooked to perfection and so flavorful. The Scottish Salmon with the Forbidden Rice was to die for. For dessert, we shared the Lemon Tart which was light, with a beautiful presentation. I ate most of it! We loved the Moroccan influence in the decor; it was very inviting. The menu was a mixture of Spanish and Italian fusion. Although we live in the SF Bay Area, we cannot wait to go back... This is a gem in Santa Barbara!"

  • "The Scallop small dish was amazing, presentation and flavors superb. Salmon main dish similarly wonderful. The Sea Bass (I may be remembering the wrong fish) salad was good, but paled next to the standout dishes. The Bar manager served us on a Monday night and was very helpful and attentive. Very nice experience overall."

  • "We're locals, "mature", and definitely love great food - but need an attractive, cozy ambiance and friendly, professional service if we are going to dine out. Cadiz is great on all counts. As designers, we appreciated the room's beautiful, warm colors and finishes, and the quality details. We love that the owners are from Sicily - one of our favorite places on the planet (beautiful photos decorate the walls). As "foodies" - we loved everything we tried, Tapas-style: The fabulous scallops, spicy beef skewers, lamb meatballs, roasted beet salad, olives, etc. The wine list is quite good - a blend of local and adventurous. Best of all - their service: friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, but not intrusive. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I chose Cadiz based on the dinner menu and the look and feel of the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our tapas and entrees and had a great time with our server who made the night fun with his very good recommendations and jokes. Cadiz has divisions in the dining areas that makes the experience more intimate but still lively. Enjoy !"

  • "We went to this place because of good ratings in the internet. I expected to see a lot of people but it was rather empty. But the food was really good. The a la carte prices were $$$ and when you add up at the end, many will find the restaurant to be a bit pricey. It's not a place that I would try to go back as soon as possible but it was a good first time experience."

  • "Was very pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. Would go back to try other items on menu. Prices for food seemed fair, although think the wine was overpriced."

  • "Great place for shared small plates. Had an excellent risotto with mussels and other good things. The carpaccio was a little skimpy, but good. I would have paid a few dollars more for a nicer, larger presentation, as most other restaurants provide."

  • "Fun flavors and ideas on the menu how the food lacked flavor and was pretty salty."
    Dined on 11/30/2013
  • "I feel like the chef for the night had some problems with flavor. My son had the lamb shank, which had an overpowering sauce. The lamb shank itself seem to not be slow cooked as long as it should have been ... the meat didn't fall off the bone. I had the pappardelle bolognese. the pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly, but the bolognese was also seasoned a bit strangely. Next time in in Santa Barbara, I will try a different restaurant."

  • "Cadiz on lower State St., has a 'colorful' location, but stylish decor, accommodating staff an eclectic menu and knowledgeable chef. Group seating, across from the serving window or the kitchen door, is not ideal--but the owner and staff were lovely about adapting to our concerns. The Scottish Salmon was quite good, not overdone with a nice crispy skin. Hors d'ouvres of fried calimari, bruchetta, and a dip trio of baba gahnoush (garlic-eggplant), hummus and Greek yogurt dips with flat bread and entrees of steak, mushroom risotto, beet salad, and a wiild boar Bolognese were all nicely done. For our daughter's birthday they comp'ed their most popular dessert and an addtional choice as well. A very pleasant evening."

  • "The ambiance was pretty nice, it was reasonably quiet. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. Our waiter, and the wait staff in general were great! Our waiter, Dudley, was one of the best waiters I have had. Attentive, but not over bearing, and very personable. It was fairly priced and the service made up for the fairly decent food. I had the Mushroom Risotto and it was pretty good, no real pop to it."

  • "The restaurant was full. On the menu they have small bites plus entree's. The lamb meatballs (small bite, but enough to share) were excellent. I had the caprese salad and diver's scallops. Both were small bites and very good. Hubby had the homemade pasta and meet sauce and it was very good as well. We split the salad but the scallops had only two and not enough to share. The food was very good but pricey for the portions served. They have specialty drinks as well and are pricey too. We will go back. It is a very nice restaurant with very good food."

  • "We sat at 7:45. Were greeted promptly, order two drinks (one beer, one club soda & lime) and an appetizer of olives. Girl who took our order was apparently not our server; this came out as only the beer arrived and the club soda came much later. She apologized and told us this would not be on the bill. We ordered with our server, Osso Bucco and steak. Our entrees arrived around 8:45. We were very hungry but the nice atmosphere kept us at bay. As our server delivered our meals he informed us that he had already spoken to the manager and that we would not be charged for them. Food was great. This is an excellent example of how to handle a negative situation and turn it into a positive."
