Diner Reviews
  • "There have been a lot of new restaurant openings in the 3rd ward/Bayview area over the last year and we have tried most of them. None of them compare to Circa...none. I have finally realized that great food in a relaxing environment where you are treated like a regular (even if you are not) is far preferable to trying to impress your FB friends with a pic from the latest "hot spot"...."

  • "I found the food and cocktail menu interesting (and attractive to true foodies) but overpriced. Lovely ambience and very good service. I think I would recommend this restaurant simply because Milwaukee needs more chefs and restaurant owners to take chances on these types of neighborhoods and menus."

  • "First time here. Will definitely be back. Interesting menu, great service, wonderful ambience. It is a nice addition to the Walker's Point dining scene."

  • "My husband thought that the scallops were too salty but outstanding in quality."

  • "We have been to Citronelle in Washington D.C. several tmes and its former Assistant Sous Chef has brought the same food taste and presentation to Milwaukee at a much more affordable price. We were there on a Tuesday night and the place was nearly empty, so it is hard to judge how it would be on a crowded weekend night, but the service was excellentl, the servings were creative and just the right size, the drinks were imaginative and the "Whatchamacallit" desert was worth the calories. The building itself is old and interesting and a great adaptive use for a redeveloping Walker's Point area."

  • "This was our second visit and we just love the food. It is so different and very fresh and delicious. The wait staff is very attentive, helpful and knowledgeable. This is one of our favorite places to dine."

  • "It was our second visit to c. 1880 and as wonderful as it was the first time! We had 'foodie' friend visiting from Chicago and we wanted her to experience circa! We were not disappointed! Wonderful service and fabulous food! Will return as soon as possible!"

  • "The food and drinks were exceptional! We had the duck and the scallops, and both were delicious and were paired with excellent flavors. The service was outstanding; our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. We are definitely going back."

  • "If you are looking for a restaurant that can provide a sofisticated, yet relaxed, dining experience, C1880 should be on your "go to" list. The food is always delicious, the wait staff are attentive, without being intrusive. And the whole atmosphere provides a satifactory "fine dining" experience. It's not cheap, but it's not crazy expensive either. The $75, five course, tasting menu is a lot of food, but the pacing of the meal allows you to really experience the artfulness of the chef. I highly recommend it. It's a great deal. Note that everyone at the table has to order the tasting menu if you go that route."

  • "We were excited to try 1880. Décor was nice but the food was disappointing. The bread service was not of high quality. Menu items were inventive; execution was disappointing. Many dishes were oversalted. Best dish was the pheasant. Short rib was overcome with onions and the lamb needed warm peas (rather than cold) and more of them, since there was nothing else on the plate; lamb sauce very oversalted). Appetizer choices were all cold; needed some hot choices. Service was mediocre. I had to stop eating my entrée and wait for my glass of wine because I really wanted to enjoy them together. I waited quite awhile even though I ordered my wine before the entrees were served."

  • "My wife & I celebrated our 24th anniversary at c.1880. We drove up from Illinois, and it was completely worth the drive!! The ambience is very inviting and intimate, while conveying an "industrial hip" reflective of the area. The entire team was friendly, well coordinated, and obviously proud of the restaurant. My wife has celiac disease, so requires Gluten Free, and the team really put her at ease. They were very familiar with the requirements, and stressed much of the menu is naturally gluten free due to the chef's style and menu items. Great News !! We went with the 5 course tasting menu, with wine pairings, and everything was excellent. Pork Belly, Monkfish and Lamb were so good. We will definitely be back. What a gem."

  • "I'd give the restaurant a B. Good food, but no "Wows." Two salads were enjoyable but small. The pork belly lacked a bright sauce. Likewise with the scallops - nice carmelization but no flavorful seasoning or sauce. My lamb tenderloin might have been a bit overcooked for my taste and the jus could have been bolder in flavor. I would like to go back again and try some other dishes."

  • "We just love this restaurant and continually pick Circa for our date nights over the other great restaurants in Milwaukee (and we have been to all of them). Circa continues to surprise us with their menu changes throughout the year. The cocktails are great. The wine is great. Everything is consistent, delicious, fun, interesting, and a definite go to place if you really are a "Foodie" AND even if you are not."

  • "c.1880 is in a pretty deserted area, but don't let this fool you. The food was nothing short of spectacular. Fresh ingredients and well-prepared. Good wine list as well. I went on a business dinner, but will definitely be coming back with my wife and friends."

  • "Great food, great service, great time. I highly recommend c1880 to everyone and look forward to our next visit. Wine list is spectacular! New favorite place in MKE!"

  • "The restaurant was a little hard to find but worth the trouble. The staff was friendly but not overly attentive. The food was interesting, in the best sense of the word. The didn't have the wine I wanted but other than that it was a perfect night. I will definately return for another meal."

  • "Good food. Did the tasting menu and had an excellent time. "

  • "Dined on a Weds. night. The restaurant is in a gentrified factory district just a few minutes from downtown. Easy street parking and worth the drive. The food was fresh and lovingly prepared. The locally grown trout had excellent crispy skin and was over some crunchy veggies. The appetizer fois gras was a generous portion. Served with delicious brioche toast. A vegetable medley prepared for a vegan request was delicious. Several unordered extra treats were provided gratis. The sommelier came over to discuss the pinot noir selection from the interesting and good value wine list. Our server provided just the right combo of attention when needed and privacy for discussion."

  • "Everything from the host's greeting to the artistic presentation of the entrees was flawless. Our server skillfully guided us through menu choices and each course of our dinner. Ingredients and construction of the creations set before us were interestingly explained. Without exception, it was a dining experience orchestrated with knowledge, creativity and team work. Sophisticated, yet relaxed, the result was a very special, delicious, and adventurous dining experience. Highly recommend!"

  • "Our first time at this restaurant. We were greeted warmly and our table was ready immediately. The atmosphere was energetic and upbeat, as was the service. Can't say enough about the food! We began with foie gras with brioche with a berry reduction, which was fantastic. Then we enjoyed the beautiful celeriac soup with a crimini-fleur de sel and shallot accent. The short rib was everything short rib should be - fall-apart and tender, not too saucy, delicious! I wish we had had time to take advantage of the price-fixe tasting menu, but we were short on time. We will return! My only criticism is that the wine was warmer than it should have been coming out of the cellar, which un-optimally was a pass-through and thus can't hold temp."

  • "My husband & I moved from Bay Area to MKE a little over a year a ago and our biggest concern was if we could satisfy our love for fine neighborhood dining without having to drive to Chicago. Then we ate at c1880. Our concerns disappeared. c1880 has set the tone for the hip Walker's Point foodie experience. Not only for couples and small groups, c1880 accommodated a corporate executive function ... We had the entire restaurant to ourselves and the attendees were incredibly pampered with the food experience. If you have not experienced c1880 yet you are missing out on the best of the best!"

  • "My wife and are are working our way through the journal sentinel food critic top 30 restaurants and Saturday night was c. 1880's turn. Excellent food and excellent service. I highly recommend the tasting menu although any of the courses would have been a great entree so you can't go wrong. Ambience was great for our date night with a nice table tucked in the back. On our short list to revisit again."

  • "I have found my new favortite restaurant! Everey dish in front of everyone in our party from app's to desert would rival and match up to any spot east or west coast! Service was good - but friendly. Will be back!"

  • "The food was creatively prepared without being outrageous or contrived. We enjoyed the appetizers but portions small so must order one per person. The sea bass entree was nicely prepared. The new duck dish was undercooked but the kitchen corrected it. The cake dessert was very delicious. The service was attentive."

  • "Had a challenge with billing that was clearly not my responsibility. Unprofessional, inflexible and intense. Not worth an argument or the overpriced charged. "

  • "We were not impressed with the service. It took quite some time after we were seated to be approached by our waitress. Then, the bar seemed to be overwhelmed so it took quite a while to get our drinks as well. The highlights on the food side were the carrot salad (strong curry flavor was dynamite! ). Also Atlantic scallops were absolutely perfect. Melted in my mouth. We appreciated the explanation of the entree at the table as well as the palate cleanser before dessert. "

  • "Met a friend from outside of the city last night, took him to C 1880 and it was beyond amazing. Didn't see my favorite beet salad from the last time I was there, but turns out that didn't matter! I ordered the scallops with spinach, thinking it was a salad type entrée. The presentation was beautiful, but the best part was the delicious cooked spinach "roll" stuffed with almonds and cheese. Had a lemon drizzle and the scallops were HUGE, served in a spinach sauce with other decorative lemon puree on the same plate. It was sooooo good! Absolutely cannot wait to go back!"

  • "Easily one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee! Creative, interesting, fresh, seasonal food never disappoints. Be sure to try the soup - it changes often, but whatever it is will amaze you. "

  • "We went to c.1880 on a recommendation from someone we had just met, so didn't have anything but their word to base the recommendation on. We were not disappointed! The food was superior to anything we've had at other 'good' Milwaukee restaurants and the presentation and service of all dishes was above expectation. What I really loved though, was that despite the high end service of dishes, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting and the prices are very reasonable for that caliber of menu. Next time I'm looking forward to just sitting at the bar with a nice glass of wine and a plate of deliciousness - that's how casual it can be! A real pleasure to dine there."

  • "The welcoming was pretty chilly. We had really good food and yet our server left a lot to be desired. e.g. needing to be asked repeatedly to describe the menu items when we could overhear other servers going into detail describing the various choices. We had fun that night because we wanted to, not because the restaurant was particularly accommodating. All in all, I would not go back because I can get food as good in other restaurants where people seem genuinely happy to be there."

  • "It is incredible that the chef is able to be so creative in such a small kitchen. The food was outstanding and served hot. The timing between courses was spaced appropriately. All around a great experience. Your restaurant is a little neighborhood treasure. We are fairly new to Milwaukee and have eaten at the restaurant three time already. And plan on bringing more people in the near future."

  • "My husband had recently been promoted at work and we wanted to celebrate. He had mentioned c. 1880 before, but we hadn't had a chance to go, so I booked the reservation about 30 hours in advance. The most popular times (6:30-8:30pm) were already taken, so we took 6:15pm. Our server was very knowledgable and helpful with the menu. My only complaint: the menu is too vague in my opinion. It just lists ingredients but not how they are prepared. My husband had the salmon appetizer and lamb-cubed entree and loved them! I had the celeriac soup, which was so amazing, then the short rib. The short rib listed horseradish, so I was concerned about the heat level, but it was mild and balanced with the other ingredients. The wine was great as well!"

  • "We had gone to c1880 for a Valentines meal a year back and were very impressed with the atmosphere and food experience. So we decided to go for our four year wedding anniversary, but also invite some dear friends/ my best man. This would be their first time, but have wanted to go there for a long time. Well, what can I say - the evening turned out wonderful like last time and our friends loved it too! I would recommend it for a special place to dine. It's cute and romantic with great wisconsin class.....their theme for the restaurant, with lovely old picture of Milwaukee on walls. Service is excellent and you will not be disappointed with the food menu as it's truly unique in it's creativity, quality and taste."

  • "Tried c. 1880 for the first time. Haven't been in the building since it was Marchese's Olive Pit, which was pretty bar-like. What a difference. Fantastic service, tremendous presentation, and awesome food. My wife and I were beaming after we'd left, meaning we will def. be back sometime in the near future. (note: LOVE the sparse menus. Tried things on a whim, and had the meals completely explained table-side. Fun!)"

  • "Our second visit and once again really enjoyed it. Terrific service, although the bartender seemed to have only one speed! Everyone was very knowledgeable about the food. We had a couple of specific questions and they were easily answered on the spot. Aaron was a great server. My only suggestion would be to look at the desert menu. It seems a little unambitious given the high standards of the rest of the fare. It was a great dinner, we'll be back for sure."

  • "Run, don't walk to this fine restaurant. I loved everything about it from the warm and inviting decor to the amazing food. My goal in finding a good restaurant now it to find a place that has a creative chef who can take local, sustainable foods and create food that I cannot create at home. The portions here were perfect, the food was beautiful, and the flavors were complex and amazing. I can't wait to go back."
