We chose it for its cuisine, and we also previewed the menu. On arrival, the ambiance was a big turn off for us. The music was loud so that it was difficult to have a conversation. The food was good, we essentially ordered everything on the dine about town menu and were pleased with the variety and quality. We also had a scenic view which overlooked the pier. However, this did not overcome our negative experience loud music. I can certainly see why it would be a good setting for a nice date. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant for people who are looking for a quiet dinner with good food.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMOur Anniversary Dinner CritiqueI chose a DAT dinner menu. First course was the scrumptious salt and pepper calamari with ponzu cucumbers, garlic, cilantro and tabasco remoulade. The long narrow plate was much too slim to contain the calamari and garnish. The calamari did not stay in the plate. Several pieces were on the table. The calamari was lightly battered and fried and was tasty nontheless. My entree was the turmeric grilled snapper with sizzling onions and herbs, rice noodles, herbs salald and nuoc cham sauce. This was delicious and is prepared just right. For dessert, I opted for the warm chocolate torte with coffee ice cream and it was delectable but was rushed in preparation. The wait staff was efficient and friendly. Close enough to the ferry to walk and far enough to not be crowded with tourists. The view was great and we were able to watch 4 America's Cup boats practicing. Service was exceptional, from the hostess who gave us the "best table in the house", to the waitress, to the bus boys.
The food was great and accommodate my gluten free needs. French fries were awesome! Coffee and dessert were also exceptional. The view is disappointing considering that the restaurant is right on the pier. You're looking directly at a cruise ship berth, flanked by wharf buildings on both sides that generally block your view of the bay. I have to say and all of us agreed that Butterfly was a fantastic choice. The lunch menu and the variety of choices was just great. We orderd 4 or 5 appetizers as well as 4 or 5 lunch itmes along with 4 dessert items.Everyone of us sampled each item and all of them were very good. The staff was nice and very helpful with their suggestions and menu knowledge. You would have no idea looking at Butterfly from the Embarcadero, that there is a fantasic view of SF Bay. We definately recommend Butterfly and the lunch service. The meal started off with an assortment of appetizers that were fabulous. I thoroughly enjoyed the scallop entree. The banana bread pudding is a must! The courses were well paced. Notably spacious inside and around the table, we had no problem seating and maneuvering our large party. However, it is extremely loud.
The food was exceptional. What appeared as a ho hum asian inspired menu was much more creatively presented and executed. The portions were generous, even for the appetizers so if "small" plates makes a meal for you, this is ample!

The Happy hour lasts from 3pm to 7pm and since the appetizers are wonderful - they are even better at a discount.
The chef/owner is clearly engaged as he has made the rounds of the tables to inquire about the food and our well-being each time we have been there. We have introduced many of our friends to Butterfly and they continue to return also. We recently saw it on the PBS show "Check Please." The diners couldn't say enough good things about it, so we decided to give it a try. The food was excellent as well as the drink specials. The atmosphere is great also. We were there on a Wednesday night during happy hour. I think my only complaint is that we were not offered the happy hour menu or told about the 3-Course special. Luckily, I checked out the website before we went so I asked for it. The happy hour items (which are also on the regular menu) were much cheaper.
