Diner Reviews
  • "Food was good, however it would have been much better had our entrees been served at temperature and the server remembering to bring our sides. Was not impressed with the portion size of the items on the restaurant week menu, pretty sad when you have to order side dishes and even worse when a kale side dish is about 3/4 of a cup for $5."

  • "Noise level was very high, hard to hear others at the table. Food was amazing and he décor simple. Curious about the floral, pottery water pitchers that really didn't seem to fit the space. Wait staff could have been more on point. Mixed up appetizer order, didn't know who ordered what, an charged us for a dessert we didn't have."

  • "There is definitely amazing food to be found here, but unfortunately the restaurant week menu was a little underwhelming. The appetizers started off our meal with a bang - as did the table bread served with it.. definitely one of THE best butter rolls I've ever had. I ordered the corn chowder which was rich and creamy (probably made with an entire stick of butter), and others had the veal bacon which was just as good. The entrees, however, fell a bit flat. The fish and greens (kale) was too salty, which my friends' short ribs was a bit overcooked and not tender enough. Dessert finished semi-strong with the chocolate cake and plum tart, but again, not as great as the appetizer. Maybe the regular dinner menu is worth the extra dollars."

  • "I am often wary of going out during Restaurant Week because although I love the bargains, the offerings aren't always peak. Butter has been one of the standouts, though. We had a great lunch experience at summer RW and would do it again. Cocktails are amazing (yes, at lunch!), soup of the day is always a good bet (corn chowder poured into the eclectic vintage bowls from pitchers), and dessert is always delicious (dark chocolate cake with candied nuts). I was a little disappointed by the flavors in the pork shoulder - it was a little too acidic for my taste. Chef Alex's meat is usually the key to a good meal here but I would get the pasta if I were to try again this month."

  • "The food was not very good. Pork entrée was very dry and sour. Not sure it is because of the quality for restaurant week is lower than usual."

  • "I dined at Butter the other night with a few friends and we loved it! We are all CIA graduates and work in the industry and were very impressed by the service and food. Our server Tony was very friendly and made sure we were very well taken care of! The restaurant week menu had great options! The corn soup was delicious and has been in the back of my mind since I dined! Butter is a place where I will bring out of town guests and other industry employees. Overall it was great! Thank you so much! Next time it would be amazing to meet Chef Alex, I am a HUGE fan!"

  • "I love the show Chopped and while I was visiting New York, I wanted to experience Alex Guarnaschelli's food. While I was in NYC, it happened to be Restaurant Week! I ordered from the pre fix menu, and was extremely pleased. I got the chicken and it was the best I've ever had. I think that Butter was in it's prime a couple years ago, however, the food and service is still outstanding today."

  • "What a fabulous dinner we had at Butter- I have been wanting to go to one of alex's retaurants for years and it did not disappoint- everyone loved the food and we live for good food. Could not have been better- those rolls !!! and the deserts to die for. Cant wait to go back to NYC and have another great meal there."

  • "We went for Restaurant Week and had a fabulous meal! The bread and butter to start off with were so delicious and fresh, we just knew the rest of the meal would be terrific, and it was. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. We weren't rushed through our meal at all like they do in some places during restaurant week. The short ribs were extremely tender. The shrimp and corn chowder was absolutely delicious. The chocolate cake was very decadent and tasty. It was a great experience, and we will return."

  • "I came in with 8 friends for my 31st Birthday on Wednesday night and I was sadly disappointed in the lack of service or attention anyone gave us. The food was good but not worth visiting again or recommending it to anyone. It sucks because I love Alex as a chef but the overall experience wasn't how I would think a top notch restaurant should operate."

  • "Butter was truly a wonderful dining experience. The wait staff was very knowledgeable. The atmosphere was outstanding. In addition, my friend and I met Chef Alex who is my personal favorite. She signed her cookbook for us. We really couldn't believe such an extraordinary chef would take the time to actually oversee her restaurant all evening. I raved about the food and all that went with it. I definitely will visit again."

  • "Restaurant week. Ambiance is great, was packed and loud. Good booze selection albeit on the pricey side. Had the chilled Cucumber soup which was refreshing but on the blander side. Had the chicken which had amazing seasoning and a great unique flavor which I devoured; but to be fair on the dry side. The Chocolate cake for dessert was okay. Service was great and attentive"

  • "Two LA girls met up here for Restaurant Week. We were so excited and the menu did not disappoint. I started off with the Veal bacon and spicy cabbage, then a Hake (fish) entree followed by a plum tart. All were delicious and a bargain at $38 for the prix fixe menu. The service was excellent and the ambiance was just right."

  • "Tried the midtown location for lunch during Restaurant Week. Physical location of the restaurant is in the basement of a hotel though it has its own external entrance. As it was a sunny day, the place was well lit due to the large window from the courtyard above. However, I can see how it can be dark on dreary days or nighttime. Decor and ambience is welcoming. Can easily sit and eat at the bar. All dishes are nicely presented and very flavorful. We would definitely return to try other choices. Other reviewers had issue with the service. We found the service not warm but definitely acceptable. In fact, there were so many different people who came by our table we were not sure who was our main waiter."

  • "I am an Alex Guarnaschelli fan and have been trying to get to her restaurant for a year or so. I finally got in and was impressed. Even though I did not get to see her the food was up to her idea of quality. We ordered the bread basket. YUM! I had the Shrimp & Grits and my dining companion had the Steak & Eggs. The food was very good. The service was a little slow at first and the a/c was cranked way up (everywhere inside was cold in NYC that day) but overall all was well. I definitely will return!"

  • "From start to finish, our dining experience was top notch. Waiter was excellent. Very knowledgeable about wine selection and helpful in recommending dishes. One of the best meals I've had in NYC."

  • "I LOVED the Cauliflower Entrée- I would go back again just for that ! (which I did for lunch three days later but that is not on their lunch menu, but I still had a great lunch w/the salmon.) It was absolutely delicious ! We also had some of the other vegetable side dishes and loved them all. The beets were exceptional as was the potato gratin. My daughter had the pasta with lamb sausage- she was pleased but it wasn't as outstanding as the cauliflower entrée."

  • "We enjoyed a special evening at Butter. Every detail was perfect; ambience was comfortable with spacious, intimate seating. The menu is refined with several key choices that range from appetizers to entrees. Everything we selected was delicious and perfectly prepared. We enjoyed the shrimp, which were huge and tasty; flavors in every meal came through with distinction. We ordered the Kale salad, which was one of the best we ever had. The kale must have been massaged to make sure it was soft and easy to digest and the flavoring was absolutely perfect. Guest said the steak was the best he ever had and the bass dinner I ordered was perfect. The raspberry beignets were exceptional; worth every calorie. outstanding service."

  • "My kids and I treated ourselves to this special lunch on our trip to New York. My daughters wanted to dine at the restaurant portrayed in "Gossip Girl" and Alex G. of Food Network fame. It was fabulous! The food was delicious, and the peaceful ambience perfect. My daughter's comment sums it up: "I feel like the most important person in the world here!""

  • "I ordered a ceasar salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was absolutely delicious!! My friend actually ordered the same thing. Neither of us could believe how tender and juicy the chicken tasted. Mouth-watering!"

  • "We had been to the other location of Butter before, and this one close to the theater did not disappoint! We got to meet Chef Alex, who went from table to table checking on everyone. She is delightful. Our food was amazing. Will definitely go back. The restaurant is beautiful (but loud)."

  • "My husband said the pork chop was the best he's ever eaten and my ribeye steak was perfection. To start, we shared a very nice baby gem lettuce and lobster on the half shell. The salad was perfectly dressed and the lemon tarragon sauce for the lobster was amazing and a perfect compliment to the lightly poached lobster. For dessert we chose a fresh strawberry tart and the raspberry beignets - both were delicious. The service started out poorly because our waiter apparently didn't notice that we had been seated so we were not greeted until I found the hostess and complained that we had been waiting for a waiter for 20 minutes. Although he was not apologetic he did do an adequate job after that. All-in-all I would go backing heartbeat."

  • "Food was good but service was not. Bloody Mary tasted as if it was a glass of tomato juice - no celery, no horseradish and I'm not even sure there was vodka in it (for $15!) There was no bartender and the hostess was filling waters and apologizing for service. Disappointing!"

  • "Did not get our drinks until after the food was brought out and the staff was very unapologetic about the mistake. Food was luke warm."

  • "Went here for brunch at 11 am (right when it opened) and had to wait a little while for our table, which was weird. Place was basically empty except for maybe 4 other tables. Service was painfully slow....took forever to even get basic drinks like iced tea. The food was good, but it was just "good", nothing spectacular. I mean, we just ordered omelettes, but one would think the "cure all" omelette would be spectacular based on its description, but it was just like...whatever. And it came with nothing but a sprig of baby watercress. Fries were good (but they should be, they are just fries). I expected much more based on the chef Alex's description of foods that she loves on her various TV appearances. Won't go back. Pretty decor, though."

  • "Awesome brunch. We stopped by for a late brunch after exploring the Upper East Side. We have visited many of the Fig and Olive's and enjoyed them all. I had some wine, crostinis, while my wife got the brunch special. The food is very good and is always consistently fresh. The service and atmosphere were outstanding. We are looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "The place, ambience, decor was awesome. The food was phenomal!!! The service was horrific. It took our waiter over 20 minutes to even take our drink order. Nothing was explained- no specials, he never checked on us once to see how we were doing. Luckily- the food made up for the poor service otherwise I was ready to walk out the door. But I highly recommend the - appetizer- indian eggplant on toast and my husband raved about the pork chop and I loved my chicken. We also had a rhubard and rasberry dessert ... it was delicious!!"

  • "Great ambiance and the secondary servers (water, bread) were very attendant. However it took 30 minutes to get our drinks and our waiter had still not taken our order after 50 minutes. He talked to patrons at a nearby table for 20 minutes. Although we had allowed an hour and a half for dinner before our show, we were worried about how long the rest of the meal would take at the pace it was going so we got our bill for our drinks and left. It was a real disappointment because we were looking forward to it so much. My daughter and I are Chopped fans which is why we chose Butter on our trip to New York."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her Birthday. We had more than enough time to decide what we wanted to order (drinks, appetizer, and main). Our waiter was rudely flirtatious with my girlfriend. There's no need to put your arm over her and look down her cleavage to describe drinks. The order in which our food came was appetizer, THEN drinks, then main. For a $16 cocktail, they sure pack a lackluster punch. Also, the glass for the seltzer water was noticeably dirty with chunks which they failed to notice and we had to call attention to it. While on the pricy-side, the food was great. Too bad the service brought down the entire experience. Not attentive or attention detailed, and sometimes just out-right rude."

  • "Food was good, service was decent, but it was during a World Cup semifinal, which turned the apparent fine dining restaurant into a sports bar."

  • "The food was very good, especially the duck rillettes and the veal bacon, though the ribeye was not as tender as I would expect. The décor and ambiance are lovely. But our waitress was just not with it. We had to call her over repeatedly, trying to get our orders taken, to find out where the missing items were and where the food was. I had been scouting for a possible private dinner but I would not hold it there now--if the kitchen can't manage the normal dining room on an average night (there were empty tables), then how could they manage a private dinner for 24 on top of that? We won't come back."

  • "After hearing about this place from a friend I decided to go for lunch this week. I am very happy I did. We shared the veal beacon which was excellent and I had the burger with beacon jam. The jam gave the burger a wonderful flavor and the bun was the perfect way to serve this masterpiece. I recommend it highly. My friend had the fried chick Wordorf salad which was also delicious. I will be going back for dinner as I must try the Branzino next."
