Diner Reviews
  • "After hearing about this place from a friend I decided to go for lunch this week. I am very happy I did. We shared the veal beacon which was excellent and I had the burger with beacon jam. The jam gave the burger a wonderful flavor and the bun was the perfect way to serve this masterpiece. I recommend it highly. My friend had the fried chick Wordorf salad which was also delicious. I will be going back for dinner as I must try the Branzino next."

  • "The food was very good, especially the duck rillettes and the veal bacon, though the ribeye was not as tender as I would expect. The décor and ambiance are lovely. But our waitress was just not with it. We had to call her over repeatedly, trying to get our orders taken, to find out where the missing items were and where the food was. I had been scouting for a possible private dinner but I would not hold it there now--if the kitchen can't manage the normal dining room on an average night (there were empty tables), then how could they manage a private dinner for 24 on top of that? We won't come back."

  • "Great food but nearly impossible to hear the person sitting next to you."

  • "Although we had high hopes for Butter as a special place to celebrate our anniversary, we were very disappointed. Butter's menu being somewhat limited, we expected each item to be perfectly prepared. Actually, everything from appetizers to beignets was unremarkable. Starter portions were small. Fluke, the daily special, was insipid and soggy while crabcakes were over-fried with no sizable chunks of crabmeat. We shared an order of the highly touted beignets, which were light and fluffy, but with minimal raspberry filling. Worst of all, the noise level made it nearly impossible to conduct a conversation. Butter may be a vibrant spot for young people looking to be seen, but it's definitely not a venue for a special occasion celebration."

  • "The atmosphere was romantic, soft lighting and just really special. We had a drink at the bar which I fell in love with. I would come back for a drink at this bar. The food lived up to her reputation. Alex is one of the few chefs on TV that actually has a great restaurant. The presentations were artistic. The mushrooms and cheese on bruschetta were a work of art. I rarely order a steak, but the steak here was just like the name of the restaurant, butter. It was so rich and perfectly prepared. I have fallen in love with this restaurant."

  • "A great place for a mother-adult daughter birthday luncheon. Below street level but open, cleverly lit with skylight admitting daylight, modern and comfortable. Food was excellent, fresh, appealing, slight modifications for vegetarian needs graciously acknowledged. Staff was very welcoming and attentive, making it a lovely afternoon."

  • "I am a big fan of the original Butter location, and I found this menu less appetizing, and the food itself less appetizing as well. My party was so underwhelmed with all of the dishes we ordered that we passed on dessert."

  • "It's great to have this new restaurant in the neighborhood. The architecture and ambiance are great. The food is terrific - tasty, not pretentious, almost "comfort food". A terrific place for lunch. I've gone several times, and my only concern is the service. Waiters seem detached, unfriendly, and frankly unresponsive. It seems like you are doing them a favor by placing your order - no smiles, no greetings, and somewhat delayed service. After lunch we ordered coffee and the coffee didn't come, but the put the check on the table. I do there because of the food and ambiance - in spite of the attitude and performance of the wait staff."

  • "Our waiter was completely disengaged and low energy. It was obvious that he wanted to be somewhere else. He was simply the worst server (given the quality of restaurant) that I have had (Brian, I think) in a long time. New York waiters have certainly improved but this kid did not get the memo. If the food had not been so great, I would never come here again!"

  • "Three of us ordered the French toast for Brunch. It literally was one half of a piece of bread. It was 11 am when they opened and they "ran out" of raspberries. Pretty sad. The omelet that was supposed to include ham and when we told the server he came back with two slices of bacon. We would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Chose Butter for Sunday brunch before seeing Bullets over Broadway. Great theater district choice. Clean and new, great menu for dinner as well as lunch. The Sunday brunch was a fixed menu and I chose a double order of mini lobster rolls after tasting how delicious they were. The lobster chunks were fresh white no red skin ( which turns me off) and prepared with celery and a light lemony sauce. The sauce was used sparingly just enough to accent the lobster. If you like a lobster roll and can't get to Gosmans or Louie's in Port Wash, come her!"

  • "We had limited time for our meal due to show reservations. We made early reservations but were seated 10 minutes late. We notified waitess we had only 1 and half hours for our meal. She guarenteed us it was enough time for our meal. Well that was not the case. Forty minutes after we got our drinks and apps, we still hadn't got our meal nor were we visited by our waitress. My husband had to approach her and we were told the meals were being plated. The manager did not care. We had 20 minutes to wolf our meal down. Ashame since it was good food. An Iron Chef should have a staff that can do a meal in a timely fashion. We went to David Burke's new restuarant the next day. It had only been open 2 wks. Food and service were AMAZING!"

  • "We had an absolutely fabulous dinner at Butter. Steak was tender, delicious and perfectly cooked, coulibac of wild salmon was full of flavor, the cauliflower large plate was divine. Gem lettuce salad was crisp and dressing had a nice bold flavor. Desserts of beignet with vanilla sauce, as well as vanilla bean ice cream and lemon sorbet were all delicious, and the portions were just right. My daughter has a nut allergy and the waiter and chef were very accommodating. We spend part of every year in France so we know good food when we eat it! All around excellent meal."

  • "A really great find just out of Time Square. The food was amazing with great flavoring. It started with really good bread and followed with good old fashion drinks (Calamansi and a Straight up). We had the special appetizers of gnochi with Lobster (the gnochi weren't that good, but the lobster was cook to perfection and the sauce was spicy and divine) and a hald dozen oysters. For the main the menu of the day was the duck with fresh strawberries and the rib eye with potatoes both really good, especially the melt in your mouth rib eye. I have to say that the prices we're a little bit high (30$ and 45$ for the specials and 44 for the rib eye). Overall, go with an open mind and a fat wallet."

  • "My wife and I watch copious amounts of the Food Network and she allows me to openly say that I am in love with Alex Guarnaschelli. I'm more in love with her food. My wife had the lunch pasta dish and I had the catch of the day. Wonderful. We brought our 1 yr old, and despite other reviews suggesting that it is not a child friendly place we couldn't disagree more. The staff, and not just our waiter, were wonderful to her. That counts for far more than decor and food. My wife says this is her new favourite NYC restaurant. We can't wait to visit again. Thank you to all the folks who really made it feel like a special lunch."

  • "This is my second time dining at this restaurant. Each time the food has been good and the service questionable. The first time, a few months ago, the server added a $40 tip to a $40 dining check even though I had left a cash tip of $10. My credit card company reimbursed me for the stlen amount but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided not to penalize the restaurant because of the actions of one server and tried again just recently. I came for lunch again and the service was interminably slow. Our dessert came out about 40 minutes after our entrees which is unacceptable at lunchtime. My companion complained to the manager, who ultimately comped us the meals, but this may be two strikes and you're out."

  • "My sister and I had a wonderful meal at Butter Midtown. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable. The food was excellent. The dessert menu looked enticing. The noise level was a little loud for my liking, but that seems to be common. I would definitely eat there again."

  • "I had the cauliflower entrée which was tasty, but having a half a head of cauliflower was too much of the same thing. It needed other items mixed in besides a small amount of carrots."

  • "I entertained a client here. We were a party of eight. The food was a home run, as I expected it would be. The noise level, though, got in the way of our conversation. It was also a tight squeeze into our booth. And the service missed a few cues. A client in midthought would be interrupted by a waiter reaching across, an armpit inches from his face. The second or third time we just had to laugh about it. We enjoyed our food tremendously and I'd come back, but only with a smaller, more raucous party."

  • "Go ahead, do the Waldorf Salad. Naysayers Nay. Scoffers Scoff. People who judge the Waldorf Salad an inferior item for an upscale restaurant miss out on a great dish. We also had the Butter Burger. WOW. Delish."

  • "I can not recommend Butter Midtown. Very disappointed in Alex's menu, it is too limited, appys too small and the desserts were large enough to be shared, but the staff did not mention that point. My friend's fish special was full of bones and we sent it back, my pork chop was overdone and tough, but I did not want to send BOTH dishes back. The prices are too high, for the less than stellar food. The service was fine, but what did it matter, when the meal was expensive and mediocre."

  • "Drinks, heavy appetizers and dessert...nothing memorable if asked about our meal. It took entirely too long for the above mentioned meal (3 hrs). Creme Brulee caramelized top was burnt for two of our party. The best part was the drinks made by an excellent bartender. With so many excellent choices in NYC, don't bother hitting Butter. Sorry Alex, we love you but not this restaurant."

  • "Had heard many a good thing about Butter, so booked it for dinner with friends on a Friday night. Really wished I had gone elsewhere. The food is excellent, but the service, interminably slow. 15 minutes to get a drink (would be quicker to just walk to the bar), took forever to take an order, and even then the server felt like he'd be more at home at Applebee's, and hardly knew the menu was just trying to sell the most expensive items. Then he left, mid shift (never had that happen before) and we got his slower, even less attentive friend. The whole meal should have gone about 50% faster! and we were not in a rush, and the restaurant wasn't packed, I don't know what they would do on a really busy night. Won't go back!"

  • "No one came to our table or acknowledged our table for more than 10 minutes after we were seated. Service was slow and not all meals were served at the same time. Granted our reservation was for 10 pm but if you offer late tables enough personnel should be present to give adequate service"
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "The service here is top notch, not too pushy, not too sparse. The food was really good, but I can see how someone would say that the pork chop was too salty. The soft shell crab was outstanding. We didn't have room for dessert. My date was very impressed. Recommended."

  • "Went to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Food was great (Asparagus soup, chicken liver mousse, soft shell crab, chicken, pork chop, torte, crisp). Service could use some minor improvement. Waiter was unfamiliar with the specials and needed to go back to the kitchen when asked some specifics. Appetizers came before our drink order arrived (had to ask about it). Delivered wrong appetizer and then had to wait again. In general, I would say these were minor but annoying and I expected better from a restaurant like this."

  • "Went on a slow night. Was not seated for 10 minutes, even though the restaurant was half empty. Sat down, was given the menus by someone with a robotic voice. Fine. Then continued to sit for a half hour while the waitstaff awkwardly avoided our gaze. We finally left and on our way out the door were told by the hostess (who knew we had been ignored) that she hoped we had a lovely night in the most sarcastic manner. To be fair, we never tried the food, but I have never encountered such AWFUL service in my life."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed Butter and will definitely go back. While initially we thought the menu seemed somewhat limited, everything we had was excellent. The kale salad which I was suspect of when I ordered was delicious!!"

  • "Our server was not attentive at all. At our post theatre dinner, we were seated and given a menu with crumbs and grease spots. She wanted our whole order! The cocktails came slowly we ordered. Appetizers were good & dinner. She cleared plates and dropped food on table, had to ask her to clean it up when she returned. Requested bread and BUTTER, she said ASK for our table. I asked for Beer with dinner. She would bring a menu. After finishing half my meal I asked another server for a drink menu. She then came back and could not answer if any of the half dozen beers on tap were IPAs she had to ask. Good thing we did not order wine. After two trips I got my beer. And the bread showed up. The place was not busy."

  • "Butter was delicious! We went for lunch during the work week and while it was pretty empty and quiet when we arrived, it filled up very quickly. The Thick Cut Veal Bacon...I mean, just yummy! Everything was really good and I would definitely go back to try dinner! Service was a bit slow, but that would be the only complaint...not that it was bad enough to sway my opinion."

  • "My partner and I visited for her birthday and I was very disappointed. Being that we are both huge fans of Alexandra Guarnaschelli, I couldn't believe how SALTY the food was. Everything was way too salty and the only good part of the meal was you guessed it - the butter. Even the cake for dessert was awful. Not recommended."

  • "We were excited to try Alex Guarnaschelli's Butter and the food did not disappoint. Be sure to have the crostini with fresh ricotta - it was too die for. The lamb was perfectly cooked. All the dishes had amazing layers of flavours. If you're a foodie, this restaurant will not disappoint. I have booked large parties in the past at Butter also and have always had great feedback."

  • "Came for lunch during the week. I'd hoped the food and and service would live up to the beautiful decor but sadly it didn't. Everyone at my table underwhelmed with their meal. Wasn't bad but mothing special. The service was slow and sporadic. Our waiter was rarely seen. The highlight of the meal were the raspberry beignets at dessert."

  • "the food was terrific and the atmosphere interesting. At times the service was slow, but very friendly. we were very surprised to find that only the brunch menu was being served as I specifically asked if the lunch menu was also served on Sunday afternoon when I made our reservation. This disappointed a few in our party. in addition, the reservationist was abrupt when I called to advise that we'd be a few minutes late due to traffic. she advised that the table would be given away in 15 minutes - we rushed to get to the restaurant to find that only half of the tables were full when we got there. the hostesses apologized profusely."
