Diner Reviews
  • "Outstanding food and service with well-prepared dishes and innovative cuisine."

  • "I am an Alex Guarnaschelli fan and have been trying to get to her restaurant for a year or so. I finally got in and was impressed. Even though I did not get to see her the food was up to her idea of quality. We ordered the bread basket. YUM! I had the Shrimp & Grits and my dining companion had the Steak & Eggs. The food was very good. The service was a little slow at first and the a/c was cranked way up (everywhere inside was cold in NYC that day) but overall all was well. I definitely will return!"

  • "From start to finish, our dining experience was top notch. Waiter was excellent. Very knowledgeable about wine selection and helpful in recommending dishes. One of the best meals I've had in NYC."

  • "We enjoyed a special evening at Butter. Every detail was perfect; ambience was comfortable with spacious, intimate seating. The menu is refined with several key choices that range from appetizers to entrees. Everything we selected was delicious and perfectly prepared. We enjoyed the shrimp, which were huge and tasty; flavors in every meal came through with distinction. We ordered the Kale salad, which was one of the best we ever had. The kale must have been massaged to make sure it was soft and easy to digest and the flavoring was absolutely perfect. Guest said the steak was the best he ever had and the bass dinner I ordered was perfect. The raspberry beignets were exceptional; worth every calorie. outstanding service."

  • "My kids and I treated ourselves to this special lunch on our trip to New York. My daughters wanted to dine at the restaurant portrayed in "Gossip Girl" and Alex G. of Food Network fame. It was fabulous! The food was delicious, and the peaceful ambience perfect. My daughter's comment sums it up: "I feel like the most important person in the world here!""

  • "I ordered a ceasar salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was absolutely delicious!! My friend actually ordered the same thing. Neither of us could believe how tender and juicy the chicken tasted. Mouth-watering!"

  • "Although the food was good, I was not overly impressed. I would not hurry back there."

  • "This is an excellent restaurant that has superior food and excellent and accommodating service. It is a great choice before the theater!"

  • "My husband said the pork chop was the best he's ever eaten and my ribeye steak was perfection. To start, we shared a very nice baby gem lettuce and lobster on the half shell. The salad was perfectly dressed and the lemon tarragon sauce for the lobster was amazing and a perfect compliment to the lightly poached lobster. For dessert we chose a fresh strawberry tart and the raspberry beignets - both were delicious. The service started out poorly because our waiter apparently didn't notice that we had been seated so we were not greeted until I found the hostess and complained that we had been waiting for a waiter for 20 minutes. Although he was not apologetic he did do an adequate job after that. All-in-all I would go backing heartbeat."

  • "Food was good but service was not. Bloody Mary tasted as if it was a glass of tomato juice - no celery, no horseradish and I'm not even sure there was vodka in it (for $15!) There was no bartender and the hostess was filling waters and apologizing for service. Disappointing!"

  • "Did not get our drinks until after the food was brought out and the staff was very unapologetic about the mistake. Food was luke warm."

  • "Went here for brunch at 11 am (right when it opened) and had to wait a little while for our table, which was weird. Place was basically empty except for maybe 4 other tables. Service was painfully slow....took forever to even get basic drinks like iced tea. The food was good, but it was just "good", nothing spectacular. I mean, we just ordered omelettes, but one would think the "cure all" omelette would be spectacular based on its description, but it was just like...whatever. And it came with nothing but a sprig of baby watercress. Fries were good (but they should be, they are just fries). I expected much more based on the chef Alex's description of foods that she loves on her various TV appearances. Won't go back. Pretty decor, though."

  • "Awesome brunch. We stopped by for a late brunch after exploring the Upper East Side. We have visited many of the Fig and Olive's and enjoyed them all. I had some wine, crostinis, while my wife got the brunch special. The food is very good and is always consistently fresh. The service and atmosphere were outstanding. We are looking forward to our next visit!"

  • "The place, ambience, decor was awesome. The food was phenomal!!! The service was horrific. It took our waiter over 20 minutes to even take our drink order. Nothing was explained- no specials, he never checked on us once to see how we were doing. Luckily- the food made up for the poor service otherwise I was ready to walk out the door. But I highly recommend the - appetizer- indian eggplant on toast and my husband raved about the pork chop and I loved my chicken. We also had a rhubard and rasberry dessert ... it was delicious!!"

  • "Great ambiance and the secondary servers (water, bread) were very attendant. However it took 30 minutes to get our drinks and our waiter had still not taken our order after 50 minutes. He talked to patrons at a nearby table for 20 minutes. Although we had allowed an hour and a half for dinner before our show, we were worried about how long the rest of the meal would take at the pace it was going so we got our bill for our drinks and left. It was a real disappointment because we were looking forward to it so much. My daughter and I are Chopped fans which is why we chose Butter on our trip to New York."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her Birthday. We had more than enough time to decide what we wanted to order (drinks, appetizer, and main). Our waiter was rudely flirtatious with my girlfriend. There's no need to put your arm over her and look down her cleavage to describe drinks. The order in which our food came was appetizer, THEN drinks, then main. For a $16 cocktail, they sure pack a lackluster punch. Also, the glass for the seltzer water was noticeably dirty with chunks which they failed to notice and we had to call attention to it. While on the pricy-side, the food was great. Too bad the service brought down the entire experience. Not attentive or attention detailed, and sometimes just out-right rude."

  • "Outstanding - every dish was simply outstanding. I eat out too much due to travel and I have not enjoyed a mean this much is a long time (in Europe). Highly recommended."

  • "Food was good, service was decent, but it was during a World Cup semifinal, which turned the apparent fine dining restaurant into a sports bar."

  • "The food was very good, especially the duck rillettes and the veal bacon, though the ribeye was not as tender as I would expect. The décor and ambiance are lovely. But our waitress was just not with it. We had to call her over repeatedly, trying to get our orders taken, to find out where the missing items were and where the food was. I had been scouting for a possible private dinner but I would not hold it there now--if the kitchen can't manage the normal dining room on an average night (there were empty tables), then how could they manage a private dinner for 24 on top of that? We won't come back."

  • "After hearing about this place from a friend I decided to go for lunch this week. I am very happy I did. We shared the veal beacon which was excellent and I had the burger with beacon jam. The jam gave the burger a wonderful flavor and the bun was the perfect way to serve this masterpiece. I recommend it highly. My friend had the fried chick Wordorf salad which was also delicious. I will be going back for dinner as I must try the Branzino next."

  • "A great place for a mother-adult daughter birthday luncheon. Below street level but open, cleverly lit with skylight admitting daylight, modern and comfortable. Food was excellent, fresh, appealing, slight modifications for vegetarian needs graciously acknowledged. Staff was very welcoming and attentive, making it a lovely afternoon."

  • "I am a big fan of the original Butter location, and I found this menu less appetizing, and the food itself less appetizing as well. My party was so underwhelmed with all of the dishes we ordered that we passed on dessert."

  • "It's great to have this new restaurant in the neighborhood. The architecture and ambiance are great. The food is terrific - tasty, not pretentious, almost "comfort food". A terrific place for lunch. I've gone several times, and my only concern is the service. Waiters seem detached, unfriendly, and frankly unresponsive. It seems like you are doing them a favor by placing your order - no smiles, no greetings, and somewhat delayed service. After lunch we ordered coffee and the coffee didn't come, but the put the check on the table. I do there because of the food and ambiance - in spite of the attitude and performance of the wait staff."

  • "Our waiter was completely disengaged and low energy. It was obvious that he wanted to be somewhere else. He was simply the worst server (given the quality of restaurant) that I have had (Brian, I think) in a long time. New York waiters have certainly improved but this kid did not get the memo. If the food had not been so great, I would never come here again!"

  • "Chose Butter for Sunday brunch before seeing Bullets over Broadway. Great theater district choice. Clean and new, great menu for dinner as well as lunch. The Sunday brunch was a fixed menu and I chose a double order of mini lobster rolls after tasting how delicious they were. The lobster chunks were fresh white no red skin ( which turns me off) and prepared with celery and a light lemony sauce. The sauce was used sparingly just enough to accent the lobster. If you like a lobster roll and can't get to Gosmans or Louie's in Port Wash, come her!"

  • "Three of us ordered the French toast for Brunch. It literally was one half of a piece of bread. It was 11 am when they opened and they "ran out" of raspberries. Pretty sad. The omelet that was supposed to include ham and when we told the server he came back with two slices of bacon. We would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "We had limited time for our meal due to show reservations. We made early reservations but were seated 10 minutes late. We notified waitess we had only 1 and half hours for our meal. She guarenteed us it was enough time for our meal. Well that was not the case. Forty minutes after we got our drinks and apps, we still hadn't got our meal nor were we visited by our waitress. My husband had to approach her and we were told the meals were being plated. The manager did not care. We had 20 minutes to wolf our meal down. Ashame since it was good food. An Iron Chef should have a staff that can do a meal in a timely fashion. We went to David Burke's new restuarant the next day. It had only been open 2 wks. Food and service were AMAZING!"

  • "We had an absolutely fabulous dinner at Butter. Steak was tender, delicious and perfectly cooked, coulibac of wild salmon was full of flavor, the cauliflower large plate was divine. Gem lettuce salad was crisp and dressing had a nice bold flavor. Desserts of beignet with vanilla sauce, as well as vanilla bean ice cream and lemon sorbet were all delicious, and the portions were just right. My daughter has a nut allergy and the waiter and chef were very accommodating. We spend part of every year in France so we know good food when we eat it! All around excellent meal."

  • "A really great find just out of Time Square. The food was amazing with great flavoring. It started with really good bread and followed with good old fashion drinks (Calamansi and a Straight up). We had the special appetizers of gnochi with Lobster (the gnochi weren't that good, but the lobster was cook to perfection and the sauce was spicy and divine) and a hald dozen oysters. For the main the menu of the day was the duck with fresh strawberries and the rib eye with potatoes both really good, especially the melt in your mouth rib eye. I have to say that the prices we're a little bit high (30$ and 45$ for the specials and 44 for the rib eye). Overall, go with an open mind and a fat wallet."

  • "This is my second time dining at this restaurant. Each time the food has been good and the service questionable. The first time, a few months ago, the server added a $40 tip to a $40 dining check even though I had left a cash tip of $10. My credit card company reimbursed me for the stlen amount but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. I decided not to penalize the restaurant because of the actions of one server and tried again just recently. I came for lunch again and the service was interminably slow. Our dessert came out about 40 minutes after our entrees which is unacceptable at lunchtime. My companion complained to the manager, who ultimately comped us the meals, but this may be two strikes and you're out."

  • "I entertained a client here. We were a party of eight. The food was a home run, as I expected it would be. The noise level, though, got in the way of our conversation. It was also a tight squeeze into our booth. And the service missed a few cues. A client in midthought would be interrupted by a waiter reaching across, an armpit inches from his face. The second or third time we just had to laugh about it. We enjoyed our food tremendously and I'd come back, but only with a smaller, more raucous party."

  • "Go ahead, do the Waldorf Salad. Naysayers Nay. Scoffers Scoff. People who judge the Waldorf Salad an inferior item for an upscale restaurant miss out on a great dish. We also had the Butter Burger. WOW. Delish."

  • "I had the cauliflower entrée which was tasty, but having a half a head of cauliflower was too much of the same thing. It needed other items mixed in besides a small amount of carrots."
