Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful food, company and ambiance. The spinach salad was tasty, the prime rib delectable, and the top sirloin cooked to perfection. Just what I expected for my husbands tribute."

  • "Impressive! Very sophisticated! Venue you would see like in New York, a movie, maybe Sopranos? Server was attentive and we were served in a timely fashion. It had been awhile since I met up with my dear friend. Actually it was almost a year. So to dine at Butcher Shop was perfect. We basically had the dining room to ourselves where we could enjoy each others company and catch up with great conversations. The appetizers were just perfect and the wine was great. We will be back and make this our spot to connect each time. Thanks Butcher Shop!"

  • "My husband and I enjoyed our time here. We sat in the Fireside room. We were relaxed and savored our Shrimp Cocktail appetizer as well as fresh, crisp, salads. The spinach salad is the best I have had! Fresh mushrooms, onions, bacon and eggs on the top of crisp spinach leaves. The honey mustard dressing is a delight. My husband had the prime rib to his liking and my steak with caramelized onions and blue cheese on top was mouth watering. He had the baked potato-- loaded and I had the garlic mashed. But the bread is the best! Sour dough garlic bread which comes out hot, crisp, and tender on the inside! We shared a bottle of wine which added to our dining pleasure and it was reasonable as well. I recommend the Butcher Shop to all."

  • "Ordered a salmon lunch and it was cremated - but a quick manager and friendly waitress rescued the meal and the lunch. Well done staff!"

  • "Birthday celebrations are all about the people and our party was great, and our server was friendly, fun, and feisty! Good times, good times!"

  • "I made a quick reservation for three (my sister, my Dad and myself) about 2 hours before arriving. I wrote on the reservation that it was the day of my Dad's 88th Birthday. Nothing was said, nor was it acknowledged in any way, so I didn't bother to say anything. I like the fireplace room, but the seating is a little too close (a concern when you move your chair that you may bump the person behind you)."

  • "We've been to this restaurant multiple times for steaks and have had a good experience until this last one- the steaks were dry and tasteless, we didn't tell the management, but maybe your feedback will reach them."

  • "My husband and I have eaten here several times. We usually order 2 different meals and sharing. The filet mignon with wine sauce...fabulous! Cooked exactly as ordered, the wine sauce delicous. My husband enjoyed the chicken scallopini....excellent flavor....both dishes ample portions. We always ask for Rebecca to be our server...she even remenbered what we had orderd a month earlier. Another plus..no corkage fee Sunday and Monday."

  • "a classic steakhouse of yesteryear. If you enjoy Applebee's this would be the perfect "fancy" night out destination for you and yours."

  • "Take a trip back to the 50s or 60s (or back to the North East) when you eat at this unique, high quality steak house."

  • "We loved everything about this old Chicago style cigar bar right next to our hotel, the service was also amazing! Good was priced reasonably, and was outstanding for the most part. The peppercorn filet was a bit over the top with the bacon, which made it too salty, otherwise all was delicious! Generous portions, and great atmosphere, we will be back with a group!"

  • "The Butcher Shop has been a steady and good restaurant in the area for quite a few decades. They always deliver a pleasant experience, quality food, and great service. The menu offers beef, chicken, seafood, salads, and after dinner delights. Valet parking adds a touch of elegance to the ambiance. The décor is from an era long past but it is part of the charm you will find here. The noise level gets a little loud at times. So, if you are looking for a romantic dinner this may present an issue. Be sure to ask for a quite table."

  • "My husband and I went to this place for my husbands birthday and it was ok. My husband had the fillie minion steak and I had the rack of lamb both has no flavor and were rather bland...I've had better back in Chicago."

  • "Service: very good. I was particularly impressed by our bus-boy who was very attentive. BUT- the food: disappointing. Salad was overdressed. Surf and turf: steak was properly cooked but shrimp tasted fishy (I didn't finish it), and the vegetables were cold- as if they had been pulled from the refrigerator and put on my plate. Another pet peeve-the plate was not hot. For what I'm paying- I expect a hot plate! For sides- the onion rings were good but the sauce is not a 'chili' sauce as the menu claims- it's more of a chipotle mayo sauce. The grilled asparagus were terrible- they tasted like charcoal. The hollandaise that came with it was good. Dessert: Creme brule had such a thin layer of sugar that it was barely noticeable. Will not return."

  • "At the Butcher Shop you won't have to worry about being under-dressed with jeans. The decor felt like I was in the film The Godfather (the large decorative wine bottles could use a dusting). The service was great, very prompt & attentive. I started with a lobster bisque (had a piece of shell in it) followed by the surf and turf for about $35. The bisque was decent, the lobster tail average, with the steak medallions better than average. I would suggest that if you want top notch steak I'd pay the extra $20 and go to Ruth Chris's or Donovan's. Overall, it has good prices, great service, & pretty good/average food, but when spending $25-45 I'd rather get a bit more high quality food bang for my buck (try Roy's, or Italian: Piatti's or Baci)."

  • "This was our first time and we both were very impressed with the dining experience we received. The food was incredible, the service was the best we have ever had!! I requested the table by the fireplace and was surprised that they set up a table for two right in front of the fireplace. This truly was one of our BEST dining experience ever!!"

  • "You definately get that old chicago vibe as you walk in the restaurant. Menu and options were good. Service was somewhat slow probably due to Valentines day weekend. Would return to try different menu items!"

  • "I was most impressed at the pace that staff operated at. I was so please that everyone in there was attentive and there was never a need for anything. Although the restaurant was full we didn't have to wait a long time for anything. It was nice to have such a polite server, under a stressful situation. She was kind, looked people in the eye and smiled."

  • "We were seated on time in a nice booth. The food and service was great. The only problem was it was noisy because there was a large group behind us. We will definitely be back."

  • "The food is pretty good here. The only thing I had a problem with was my side dish came out cold! We got a tiramisu cake for free at the end for our Anniversary. The service was great! There was a large group right next to us and they were pretty loud. But other than that, overall experience was great!"

  • "The ambiance here is very good. The music is 50's-60's vocals/jazz. The lack of what seems to be the standard obligatory noise at other establishments now makes this a gem. You are able to actually speak to each other without shouting. The dark wood and red leather are reminders of when dining was considered an important activity. The service is superb, we had more service here than at the last three places we dined at combined. The wait staff are attentive and courteous and happy to please. The prices may be a bit higher than at most chain restaurants, but not that much and you receive what you are paying for in the excellent food and service. They do have some excellent specials before 6PM and their lunch prices looked very affordable."

  • "I have been to this restaurant many times and have always had excellent food & service. This visit was the same except for one problem. The short ribs I ordered had a strange taste as if they had been refrigerated. And they were a bit tough for short ribs. The waitress immediately replaced them with prime rib, and it -- and all the other food at our table -- was excellent. The manager too expressed concern, was very apologetic, and said he would check on the condition of the ribs in the kitchen."

  • "Boyfriend and I came shortly before Christmas, it was fantastic and I had nothing bad to say. This time, we were seated near a loud bar, I got a headache and the waitress were rude. When my headache subsided we ordered. My steak & "garlic" mashed potatoes was served cold. But the waitress would only talk to my boyfriend and didn't stick around for my requests."

  • "This restaurant has some of the finest servers in San Diego. We are always so pleased by the kind of upbeat, competent, friendly assistance we receive all around. This is one of San Diego's Hidden Gems. Don't miss their daily "Special Dinners" between 6-8 PM. Great value for the money."

  • "Nice place for a special occasion as it is on the pricier side but food quality was great. Only drawback was the parking. Had reservations for Friday night and was stuck in valet line until I opted to go the wrong way and get out of the lot all together. In the back of the restaurant there seemed to be places to park but they were numbered so didn't know if it was for the valet. Ended up parking down the street and walking. Hadn't been here before so didn't know the set up. No direction from valet either."
