  • "unbelievable menu and service. I could sit at the bar all night with the best bartenders in town!"

  • "Took out a small group of friends who are not typically adventurous with eating. So wanted to show them what a meal could be and Butcher gave them a great show!! Started off with the Shisito (sweet peppers with sriracha aoili), Charred Brussel Sprouts (LOVE THEM) and the baked camembert. For mains we had the dirty pasta (none of them had ever tried duck and they all enjoyed it), wagyu flat iron steak (wagyu beef was one of the few things they recognized on the menu, haha), the pappardelle (good flavors and hearty) and the least adventurous had the burger. Finished it off with the deep fried brownie (this got demolished fast, so was clearly a hit but could have been a bit bigger) and the sopapilla. Great meal and can't wait to get back!!"

  • "Let me start by saying that the drinks here are absolutely out of this world! I would come back again and again just for those with the only downside being that I would have to use the women's bathrooms here again. Overall this place is great. Trendy, energetic and with great food and drinks. For this reason I absolutely cannot understand the women's bathroom at all. The stalls are about chest high and provide zero privacy. Not only that, when the door opens you can see people in the dining room, which I'm assuming means they can see you (sitting on the toilet). For the caliber of this restaurant I would expect more. Please consider a re-model."

  • "Went here with the wife for dinner. When we came in, we were immediately impressed with the decor. We had the bone marrow which was beefy and rich. I liked it as is, but my wife felt it be best with a bit more bread. We opted to eat the specials. I had the confit tuna with linguine in squid ink, while my wife has seafood escabeche. If you've never had squid ink, I highly recommend it. Our server and drinks were fantastic, a long with the food, but it was very loud. We at times noticed having to raise our voices to carry a conversation. With that being said, however, I look forward to my next time here."

  • "This is the sister restaurant to Meat & Potatoes and both are excellent. Good location for the theater crowd. Food is exceptional and a little different from the old tried and true. The Pig Candy, Liver Pate are exceptional for openers. We had the trout and the burger (only make 20 a night) which is made from scratch (ground the meat daily). Drinks are top notch. Had a Manhattan which may be the best ever."

  • "I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant from all the hype it has had around the city. Our reservation was at 945 and they kept saying the people at our table are finishing up we didn't get seated until 10:20 and that's when we decided to sit down stairs at the bar not the dining room. The food and drinks were very good however some things were hard to read as well as my friend had some dietary restrictions due to allergies. The waitress seemed annoyed and frustrated with us asking questions and for recommendations. She took very long which may have not been her fault with how busy it was."

  • "Loved the atmosphere. Interesting menu and combinations of flavors, both in food and beverages. Food was really good but could have been improved by reducing the amount of salt in every dish we had at our table."

  • "Butcher and the Rye is another home run from the owners of Meat & Potatoes! I am a big whiskey fan and the drinks are excellent and the selection as well. All of the food was excellent and the server was very knowledgable. The place was packed on a Saturday and we had to wait past our reservation, which is my only complaint. I like lively but it was rather crowded. Shepherd's pie was great, the duck ham and peppers amongst other things we had that were great. Definitely a place that I will go back to and try more items!"

  • "Well, the noise was unbearable. Unless a customer has secured the front room for dinner, other individuals on the first floor didn't get this opportunity. I would not dine in your establishment again because of the noise level. We sat on the first floor across from the steps. It was extremely difficult to converse. Sorry...the food was outstanding but not worth the visit."

  • "I will keep this short because no matter what anyone writes about this place until you try it you will not understand. I can not fault one aspect of the meal. Drinks were amazing and their bourbon selection is unparalleled. We ordered at least 5 or 6 different small and large plates and every one was out of this world. Hands down my favorite new restaurant in Pittsburgh."

  • "Great overall night out. We have had drinks and small plates a few times but never had the opportunity for a full dinner. Well that is now off our bucket list. It was great starting off with a few cocktails and whiskey drinks around the table we started with a few small plate including the marrow, brussels, and cheese plater. They where all great. We topped that off with great main course meals of hamburgers, dirty pasta, and shepards pie. Although these don't sound like your typical meals they where incredible we cannot wait to go back again. Some of the best food in Pittsburgh."

  • "The entire restaurant layout and decor is exceptional. Great vibe on a late Saturday night. Thoroughly enjoyed the Butcher Bride cocktail. Focaccia rather dry and hard, tapenade and hummus tasty. Brussels sprouts roasted nicely just way too much brown butter/lemon aoli making them greasy and excessively salty. Skirt steak with nice combination of flavors but again too salty. Dirty pasta provided most of the entertainment as the strozzapreti (priest choker) pasta history on Wikipedia is hilarious. Numerous deserts at M&P are way better than the deep fried brownie which was ok for a novelty but never a repeat."

  • "My husband and I had been wanting to come to Butcher in the Rye for ages. I will say it's a cool interior, though it is so incredibly of-the-moment (antlers and all) that inn a short period of time it will seem dated. The mac 'n' cheese was probably the best thing, and it was worth having. My husband tried the Sunday Gravy: the meat was too fatty and the sauce was blah. The trout was limp and a little cold. My rabbit pappardelle was VERY, horribly salty. I couldn't eat it, and I couldn't taste it. The drinks were nothing special, and worse, weak. Go to Eleven. We should've."

  • "Food was great and the bar was wonderful. Enjoyed having Troy as a bartender. He was very friendly and knowledgable. Service at the table was ok… she was not very attentive. We first sat at the table for awhile so we had more than enough time to look over the menu. She finally came over and my husband ordered a drink… when she came back with it, she just dropped it off and turned around and walked away before we could even say we would like to order. I finally had to flag her down. We loved the food though, will definitely be back!"

  • "Before I made a business trip to Pittsburgh, I researched several restaurants and decided to give Butcher and The Rye a try, it did not disappoint. We were seating immediately for our reservation, service was prompt, cocktail menu was explained very well and our server had great recommendations on the menu. We ordered way to much, but it was well worth the experience. The mac and cheese was some of the best I've ever had, if not the best and I would go back just to try the dirty duck pasta and braised rabbit pappardelle again. Also, they have a flight of Pappy Van Winkle....shhhhh."

  • "I have nothing but good things to say about the food and drink here. Both times I've been, it's been delicious. The drinks put together by the bar tending staff in particular deserve mention -- the bar staff are talented, creative, friendly and accommodating to requests. There is, however, one massive flaw. The women's bathroom has two corral-style half-stalls, such that if you were to be sitting in one stall and someone were sitting in the next stall, you could see each other's faces. If someone is sitting in one of the stalls and you are standing, you can see EVERYTHING they are doing. (I'm a short 5'1" -- a taller person could perhaps see more). This needs to be changed. During one restroom trip, I saw 4 women walk out without using it."

  • "We started out with some delicious cocktails, small but delightful. I had the scallops with risotto and kale, and my date had the flank steak. Both were to die for, I booked a reservation to go back in two weeks. This place is living up to our new Pittsburgh reputation as the next up and coming "food town". (as quoted by Bon Appetite)"

  • "As a serious Yelp reviewer, I'm trying new restaurants all the time... but this restaurant may actually live up to the title of "favorite restaurant of all time." I HIGHLY recommend -- but make sure to plan your reservation up to a couple months in advance!"

  • "We really enjoyed the food, the noise is crazy loud..maybe we are too old mid 50's bars are rocking. Service was just ok not as good as I expected for our first time visit..but our waitress was in no way rude just very busy. If you are "older" try to get a table on the first floor in the back less noise..we were on the second level in between bars so so loud, we could barely hear each other. But the food is 5 star and the Moscow Mules they make there are outstanding. I would go back but get a table down below."

  • "We dined here for Valentine's day and it was a great break from the norm. Instead of a glass of wine, I enjoyed a nicely tart and very refreshing whiskey sour served in a wine glass. The food was very good: I ordered the scallops which came on a blue crab risotto with crisp, citrusy asparagus. The pot de creme dessert was so rich and not to sweet. People were dining in jeans and a t-shirt or suits and ties -- it was a nice variety and the atmosphere could go either way. Pricing was so reasonable. Very fresh and energetic. Loved it."

  • "First visit to this restaurant. Menu options are unique and varied. The vibe is very different for the Burgh downtown - from the music, to the décor, to the food. Our party of 4 enjoyed everything we ordered. Service was very good - attentive, helpful and willing to spend time to explain and recommend. Look forward to going back"

  • "I'm not being picky, the bathrooms are very strange in the women's room. Our waitress was fantastic, our group of 5 split some small/large plates. She was accommodating to our requests and was very knowledgable about the menu. She was very attentative without being annoying. Some of the dishes were a little salty for my liking, but overall the food was excellent! I highly recommend the pig wing & the Mac and cheese!"

  • "I could eat here everyday! Love, love, loved it! 2 words, Dirty Pasta!!! Along with the pate, burgers, and beef cheek shepherds pie.. After the amazing meal, my friends and I decided we had to try the FRIED BROWNIE! We said we were stuffed and only wanted to try a spoonful each. Needless to say we wiped the plate clean. I cannot wait to come back!"

  • "Took my husband here to celebrate his birthday--the food was excellent, and the drinks were out of this world! We can't wait to go back; it's just as good as Meat & Potatoes, friendly service, awesome decor, very hip atmosphere but still manages to not seem stuffy at all."

  • "We really like Meat & Potatoes so we were looking forward to this new venture by the owners. Also I have always like this restaurant space - the 3 floors with overlooks - which sadly no one has ever succeeded in. Except for it being a little drafty on the second floor - we were very pleased with our dinner there. Butcher and The Rye should be a big success. The bar drinks are interesting/wine list is good, the food very good, and the service excellent. If I were to say anything about the food it would be that it would be nice if they would add a few non-meat, especially non-pork choices, and maybe some things that are lighter (less fat). The only negative is that they really need to rethink their ladies' room (it's awful.)"

  • "Overall review (Bad, OK, Good): Food = Good; Service = Good; Ambience = Good. Food: Restaurant Week. Starters: Soup - unique flavor from std french onion soups. Neg was the bread soaked up the majority of the soup and there was little broth. Escarole salad - like an apple salad but with pear. Pasta: Dirty Pasta - ground duck pasta. Duck was too gamey. Mac n cheese - creamy and cheesy. Entree: Monk fish - good flavor when you eat all components together. But the risotto made the dish too heavy. Skirt steak - very Korean influenced, you can taste it with every bite. Dessert: Sundae and deep fried brownie. Standard. Service: Server - Good, attentive. Bartender - very slow. Ambience: Three floors all with good energy. Outdoorsy decor."

  • "It's about time we get some of these hip and swanky spots in the Burgh! Food is scrumptious! Staff is friendly! The only note is that they went a little overboard on the attempt to be hip in the ladies bathroom, as my female companion described a very weird scene in there that basically requires you to see everything but the face of the person in the stall next to you. The mens room is a bit odd as well with no door separating the toilet seat from the urinal. My advice: Go! Eat! Drink! And be merry! But when it's time to do your business, go home. Enjoy!"

  • "We arrived at this swanky little gem about an hour early and waited by the bar with some cocktails for our table to be ready. The hostess came over early and informed us that they had a table ready for us. We quickly followed behind her up the stairs & sat at a very "New York-ish" tiny table. We only sat there for a few minutes before my hubby asked to sit at another tiny table that at least had no other tables next to it and a little more room to breathe. We ordered several small plates to start. We tried the brussels and the carpaccio and both were excellent! Then we decided to order more. The best beat salad w/ fried blue cheese balls, Gravy & bread, & the wagyu flank steak. Everything was excellent and we will surely be back for more!"

  • "So excited to try but disappointed. Like the concept/decor. Cocktail menu good. Food was alright. Everything looked interesting but what we ordered was over seasoned. We saw on our way out there were daily specials that we were never told about. Service was okay not helpful. Asked questions about menu but were given responses like everything on the menu is good. We ordered 3 small plates to share. She brought them all out at once. There wasn't enough room on our table. The tables are way too close together. No one can get in/out without disrupting the tables surrounding. You have to hold onto your glasses to make sure they do not get knocked off the table. Not a horrible experience but I will not go out of my way to try this place again."

  • "That said, fun ambiance, but noisy. We were at corner table upstairs, so tolerable. Food was good & reasonably priced. Mixed drinks the highlight--different & creative. Wine list not big but good. My husband's steak was cold, but otherwise food was good & our waiter was attentive without being pesty."

  • "My party of 4 had absolutely amazing meals at Butcher and the Rye. We each ordered a different appetizer and shared and the brussell sprouts were the winner by far--they melted in your mouth. Our entrees were each unique and delightful. Our server, Kyle, was fun, helpful, energetic and just an absolute jem--I hope she is our server on our next visit. This was by far in the top 5 best meals I've ever had, looking forward to our next trip to Butcher and the Rye. Only downfall, short stalls in the women's bathroom -- not cool....."
