  • "I had a great birthday dinner at Butcher and the Rye. Our server was so nice and attentive. The pig candy small plate was so delicious--I wish we ordered two servings! The scallops over blue crab risotto exceeded my expectations. There was no better way to finish it off than with the s'mores dessert. I can't wait to come back and try out the other menu options."

Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the location, the food and the drink menus. We tried the Bone Marrow and we weren't a huge fan. Without asking they immediately removed it from our bill and just thanked us for trying it. We loved everything else we tried. The food is fresh and well designed - you can tell the Chef cares and has a great staff. Would definitely go back again. Very impressive!!"

  • "I've been there twice and both times every food item that was ordered was excellent. I had the seared scallops which they call a "large" dish. For a woman it is totally enough food, might not be so for a man. The scallops sat on the right amount of risotto with the crispy kale on top. It was a mouth watering dish. My husband had the hangar steak and he thought it was the best he's ever had. We shared the beet, goat cheese salad and it is big enough split. Previously I had been there with 5 girlfriends and we each ordered a different "small" plate. They were all a hit but I have to say the brussel sprouts were the bomb - they melted in your mouth."

Got a bit noisy when they cranked up the background music- twenties/thirties style jazz but overall a phenomenal place!"

  • "The food was top notch. I will remember my scallop entree for years to come. However, the cocktails were insanely overpriced. My husband ordered a dirty kettle one martini. First, it wasn't a full martini pour. Second, it was a $12 kettle one martini!?! That is insane, and I don't just mean for Pittsburgh. His second drink was a glass of the house cider. He was expecting a pint but received a wine pour. The price tag for 6 ounces of this house cider? $8 - insane! My craft cocktail was good, but overrated and overpriced considering the amount of liquid I actually received. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem $$ on a great cocktail. So sad; the food was so memorable. But the drinks took a 5 star experience to 3 stars. "

  • "My recommendation is the crispy pig wing & manhattan. The foccacia bread is also really good. Unfortunately they were out of half of their specials. It was very uncomfortable around close - staff shut off music at 11:46 instead of verbal communication. A cool touch is the small guest books that they present the bill inside. "

  • "Don't be fooled that this is just a bar or a late night drink spot. Butcher and the Rye has a menu that is great for a quick bite or for a full meal. The space is unique and a spacious. There are multiple levels of seating and it is not too loud. The combo of small and large plates really offers a lot of variety for dinner choices base on your hunger level. My dinner partner and I had the baby kale caesar salad and a large plate. It was just the right amount. The pappardelle pasta and the seared scallops were both scrumptious. This is definitely a dinner spot that you want to check out."

  • "The food tasted wonderful, but I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see it! My party sat in the bar area upstairs (on the couch) and even though it was still daylight outside, we could not read the menu without my flashlight. If I return I would want to sit outside or near a window. The mushroom soup was wonderful and the rabbit over pasta was excellent. I would suggest better lighting in that area for eating, for drinks it was fine. "

  • "I'm between a 3 and a 4 here. Dinner was very, very good, but not spectacular--we had the trout, scallops, and the cauliflower small plate. Dessert was a standout--sundae with coconut ice cream was great. Cocktails very good, whiskey list impressive! Service was very good, a little awkward at times. Speaking of awkward, nothing like walking into the women's room and the first thing you see is someone sitting on the toilet. Partitions and doors are only waist-high, and in a small space with a big mirror, well--you will see and be seen. Not sure what the point of making customers uncomfortable would be. I would definitely come back for the drinks alone, though after two I'd head somewhere else and use the bathroom in the next place!"

  • "I always look for good food when I travel. Excellent service started from the time I stepped in the door. Every person was engaged in taking care of the customers. Loved the décor and music. (Bill Withers always makes me smile.) It was funky and fun. On the other hand the menu and whiskey list (I-pad presentation) was serious business. :) My server Scott was fantastic. Scott gave great suggestions-I started with the Around the World 12-yr Whiskey flight. Very nice. I enjoyed a few small plates but the Pig Candy was my favorite. I have to find a way to make apple kimchee! Finished the night off with the brownie/ice cream. Wicked good! It will be a definite stop anytime I'm in town. "

  • "Our server was wonderful and prompt. She recommended a delicious summery drink that I would have loved to have several of if I hadn't been driving. The food was great and the decor was a lot of fun. I enjoyed looking through the books they provide at the end that you can add comments to. I can't wait to go back. My only word of advice is if you are shy don't plan on using the bathrooms. "

  • "We went there expecting it to be catered more to the whiskey crowd. We were pleased to find that the food was fantastic, and the service was outstanding. We were seated promptly, and our waitress was always on point with refills and answering any questions we had about the whiskey samplers. The décor is fun and cool, and the noise isn't so bad that you can't hear your table's conversation. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "We have been trying for months to get a dinner reservation and finally got one to accommodate everyone's schedule. I have been to many eateries in the city of Pittsburgh, but never experienced one quite like what Chef DeShantz presented. The food was deliciously creative, the beverages included some of the best bourbon ever, and the service wonderful...Lizzie B was brilliant with her suggestions. Combine that with a charming atmosphere, and you have a dining experience that is still being discussed all these days later. The portion sizes were large enough for 2 of us to share.Every bite was awesome, the pig wing was most amazing as were the scallops with the deep fried brownie being the grand finale. I'm looking forward to a repeat visit."

  • "To my surprise we were seated as soon as we arrived (with reservations). The decor is interesting and a great conversation stimulator. Drinks are devine and the food was incredible, not run-of-the mill flavor combos but also not so unconventional that it is jarring. By some strange coincidence they were playing my favorite bands on their play list. It is a bit loud with the music and people chatting but it adds to the vibe. I'd like to go back very soon. "

  • " It was my friends bday and we were both excited to try Butcher and The Rye. we order the baked Camembert which was good but they only served it with four small pieces of bread. We were shocked because the menu said serves 2 to 4 people. For dinner my bf had the rabbit. He said his dish was uneatable. Was tiny pieces of rabbit over pasta that had too many seasoning that tasted bad. The bday girl had dirty pasta. She said it was good. I had the house burger that was a special. The waitress said they only make 20 a night & is very good. Tried it and was blah no taste. After spending a $100 for the 3 of us and not enjoying the food we will not be returning. It's bad when my friend says when we leave she likes the new meatball place downtown."
