Butcher & SingerOutstandingFood and service was exceptional.Very cool vibe, great decor. Great spot for a special occasion.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMUnbelievable dining experienceFrom start to finish, a truly great dining experience.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMGood EatsHad a very good selection of wines. My boyfriend and I love seafood so we chose several appetizers of various types. The oysters were some of the best I've ever tasted. They didn't even need anyone of the sauces they served with them. Crab cake was almost all crab not all filler stuff like some places do. Also tried the tuna sashimi which was very good as well. My boyfriend and I each chose different steaks and we shared the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. I had the filet which was good, but my boyfriend got the New York strip which was AMAZING. His was so good that I was a bit jealous I didn't order it for myself but he was nice enough to share some of it.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMBest meal ever! The food at butcher and singer was out of this world. Fresh ingredients and unique pairing of flavors. From the oysters and wedge salad to the porterhouse and surf and turf-superb!! Baked hash browns are also a must try! My husband and I agree this meal is ranked in our top 3 all time favorites!!6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMB&S is a great cow palace!B&S is a great cow palace! Wine list is outrageously priced, but look for the "end of the bin" specials, a good value. The steak is just terriffic, and don't pass on the stuffed hash brown potatoes! I split a porterhouse for two; the best of both worlds! Just a great restaurant!6/12/2013 12:00:00 AMSteaklover's paradiseDry aged porterhouse is as good a steak as I've had anywhere and I've been a lot of places. Not to be missed in you are in the Philly area.6/9/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperb!Everything was excellent, the food, the service and the ambiance - great restaurant for a special occasion.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMWow!!!The restaurant was formerly a bank. The interior is marvelous! The celing with the inlay of wood is spectacular. This is old clubby steakhouse atmosphere! Perfect steaks Nd an amazing pork chop. The stuffed hash browns are not to be missed!!! You will not leave hungry!!!! Be sure to get their cocktails as well!!!! The baked Alaska was the best ever!!!!6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMthe food was good, but didthe food was good, but did not blow me away. same with the service. if you like steak for a special occasion, i'd say it's worth the money to treat yourself. if you'd rather spend it on trying new, interesting, and amazing food, i think you could find more suitable places. it would be good for a group because the sides are family style and everyone could find something they liked (as long as they eat meat).6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of the bestMy wife, parents and I headed to Butcher & Singer for a special occasion dinner and I think it actually exceeded everyone's expectations. The food was fantastic. The steaks were probably some of the best I've ever had outside of Las Vegas. The service was above and beyond reproach. Maybe one of the best waiters I've ever had at a restaurant. For desert the Baked Alaksa is everything that everyone raves about. Delicious.
Is it pricey? Yes, figure about a $100 per person with a drink, salad, meal and desert. You could spend less but why cheat yourself. If you want to spend less I'd recommend going somewhere else. Then again you could spend a heck of a lot more here if you really want to indulge with the wines.
Top notch in my book.6/5/2013 12:00:00 AMThe beef dip was out if thisThe beef dip was out if this world. It was a special and I'm glad I tried it.6/4/2013 12:00:00 AMIt goes without saying thatIt goes without saying that the food and service were outstanding! Our server Brian added immeasurably to the experience. The surroundings are magnificent. I thought I was back in the Golden Age of Hollywood or Broadway. The emphasis is on fine American food. The Delmonico melts in your mouth. The shellfish platter is next on my list; it will be all for myself!6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMVery Good but undistinguished.Had high expectations and we received fine service and a nice atmosphere. Steaks were excellent, salad was good. Liked the hash brown side. For the Delmonico they recommend Medium and up, suggesting that their Medium is really toward the Med-rare side. Don't know why you would diverge from industry norms. I order Med rare everywhere and get a reasonably consistent steak. I went with the recommended Medium and it was just a little more than Med-rare. So, it was great, but the confusion was unnecessary.
All in all a great visit. Only problem is it's really hard to distinguish a steakhouse. It was not unique in any way. I would certainly go back if a companion wanted to try it, but I will generally steer elsewhere in this price category.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food and drinkDelmonico steak was amazing. One of the best steaks I have ever had. I got a specialty Manhattan with maple syrup and chocolate bitters that was out of this world. I even asked the waitress for the recipe and she went to the bar and brought me back a list of the ingredients. Very attentive service and excellent food. I will be back.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, pricey, little slowThe food is outstanding! Best in Philly. It's pricey but you get what you pay for. After the salad, service slowed down and we had to ask for the entrees after about an hour wait.
No matter, we had great conversation and did not mind. If you're in a hurry, you'll have to chill.6/1/2013 12:00:00 AMGatsby steak houseThe classic steakhouse entry to the Steven Starr list of restaurants. This is a good ol' fashioned white table clothed, art-deco style place to meet in the evening for an ice cold martini and a piece of dry-aged us prime beef, served ala Oscar . Nice dinner, really good service.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMSteakhouseThis is typical steakhouse - everything is over the top. Steaks were very good. The sides of potatoes, mushrooms and green beans were good. Desserts were okay - ice cream and baked alaska which is a weird banana ice cream and pineapple cake. Very expensive.5/31/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat ServiceOur Waitress, Amy, was very knowledgeable about the menu, made great suggestions, convincing my husband to go for the signature porterhouse. She and the rest of the staff was very attentive and the food was fabulous. Amy even noticed, without me telling her directly, that it was my husband's birthday and even though we were stuffed, she brought him a scoop of ice cream with a candle, which just went above and beyond in my book. What a great place with great service.5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMTakes Me Back...This restaurant and it's ambiance takes me back to a time I never lived in but always wanted to!!! Of course your dates make a difference but I could eat every meal here!5/29/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent!Had a lovely and unrushed lunch. Delicious and very pleasant Quite elegant.5/28/2013 12:00:00 AMNot What I Thought It Would BeI was very much looking forward to going to this restaurant. I was told it was the best steakhouse in Philadelphia. I invited another family to join us for dinner. I am not a steak eater but I was assured that they do everything well there. I will say that four of the people ordered the Delmonico steak and 3 were extremely happy with it. My son said it was good but very fatty. One person ordered a salmon dish I believe and I did not get a comment from her on it. I ordered the fried shrimp and it was awful. It was burnt. I did not want to spoil the dinner for the others so I just ate it and did not say anything. There really was no excuse. I want to write a longer review, but I don't have enough space. Bottom line - I would not go back.5/26/2013 12:00:00 AMmy favorite restaurantWhile the menu is outstanding as a wonderful combination of down to earth selections, the selections are presented by the most charming and competent staff around. My steak was perfectly prepared as was my companion's lobster. The most enjoyable assets of Butcher & Singer are the staff and the decor.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat for business lunchButcher & Singer has become my go-to restaurant for business lunches because of the value you get for the price, the great service and the convenient location.5/23/2013 12:00:00 AMSteak Heaven - My WW Co-#1One of the greatest presents from my best friend was a recommendation to Butcher & Singer 2 years ago when my daughter started at school in Philly. Butcher & Singer is the complete experience. To me, it's all about the food. Every time, the steak is perfect and almost without compare. The ambiance is perfect - the old "club" murals and overall feeling adds to the experience.
We order the Delmonico medium rare; they don't miss. I've also had fish in the past that was superb, but I missed the steak.
My daughter and I went again last Monday. It was outstanding. Get the hash-brown side. It's wicked bad for you but so good.
The same friend and I go every year to Charlie's in Celebration, FL. I realized Butcher & Singer is co-#1!5/20/2013 12:00:00 AMI took my boyfriend here forI took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The food was amazing and the service was great. My filet was cooked just right! I recommend the stuffed hash brown as a side. It looks a little boring on the plate, but tastes delicious! I also told our server that it was his birthday (when she asked if it was our first time there) and she brought out ice cream on a cute little plate with a candle for FREE! It was a nice touch. Great experience for a special occasion. I will definitely be going back!5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMOld School, Steak Lover's ParadiseEating at Butcher and Singer is like taking a trip back in time, to where the sophisticated and elite came to eat. The walls are covered with rich mahogany wood paneling, the booths are situated with tufted leather, the wait staff are wearing smart black jackets and ties. I'd like to think that this is where Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin would come to eat. It's a classic dining experience in a not so classic world. I've eaten here twice and have ordered the same thing, the dry aged porterhouse and the mashed potatoes, and it was just as awesome as the first time. I can't think of one flaw with this restaurant. Valet parking is pricey, but it's downtown Philly, so what do you expect. All around, Butcher and Singer is "aces in my book baby!"5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat time...I mentioned onGreat time...I mentioned on my opentable booking that it was our first anniversary and the manager came over halfway through our dinner, wish us a happy anniversary, and then sent over dessert gratis! Great time all around, so well taken care of and the food was great.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSuperb!Had a wonderful meal and experience here on may 17th,2013. The food was fantastic as was the service. I have been to many great steakhouses throughout the country and this one shot up to the top 3 of my list. The steaks ( porterhouse, delmonico) were perfectly prepared. Shrimp cocktail and hash browns were terrific. Wine list was nice but a little overpriced. A little disappointed in the brussel sprouts, they need a better recipe for my favorite vegetable. Overall, superb, I would definitely recommend this restaurant.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMButcher and Singer experienceWe brought our son here to celebrate the occasion of his graduation from Pharmacy school. The restaurant is in a beautiful building. The service was impeccable. . The food was excellent. I ordered the French Onion soup as an appetizer and I must say it was the best I ever had. Our steaks were flavorable and tender. The side dishes were abundant and good.5/17/2013 12:00:00 AMTired, but still goodB&S is noted as an excellent steak houses in a city with a lot of choices. The steaks are still good. The restaurant suffers from being a bit shopworn. The menus leave a bad impression; they look as if they have been in service for many years. Guys, paper is cheap! The service is harried, not seeing our third arrival, so his menu, drink, etc. had to keep being requested, not automatically delivered.
Steaks were good as we're sides. The seafood tower for $100 was a weak presentation and certainly not worth the cost. Half a dozen shrimp, some oysters, a small pile of little crab hunks on lettuce and 2 king crab knuckles. Shame on them!
There are a lot of choices for steak in Philly; this is not the best one.5/14/2013 12:00:00 AMAll around excellentThe waiter was PHENOMENAL! He was so attentive, gave real advice on what my family would like best (rather than what would be most expensive), and made great conversation with all of us. We came for my university graduation dinner and couldn't have been more pleased. For four we ordered the Delmonico, the Porterhouse for two, the hash browns, and creamed spinach. The food was more than enough, the steaks were amazingly tender and very very flavorful. Our waiter even kindly gave us a Baked Alaska on the house as a congratulations gift! Overall an amazing dinner with amazing staff.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMawesome place!Amazing food and service!!!! Loved the dimly lit setting, very romantic. Excellect wine choice and the filet was the beat I've ever had!5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMGood NightEverything about this restaurant says "old school steakhouse". The steaks were perfectly cooked, drinks were great, and the service was very good.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMYeah, I love the porterhouse. The food is amazing, service to match.
My wife and I live the twin lobster tails and the dry aged
Porterhouse. We order both every time we go.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful Restaurant...butMy wife and I went here on a Saturday night for our wedding Anniversary. The restaurant is beautiful, dark woods, high ceilings, Sinatra music playing in the background. It is very dark. We got started with vodka martinis and raw oysters. The combination was heavenly. The Butcher salad was great too.
Service was quite simply outstanding yet non obtrusive. We ordered the Porterhouse steak for two, and asked if it could be grilled with peppercorns and served with cognac cream sauce. A few problems here. Instead of large peppercorns coating both sides of the steak, there were medium / fine granules of pepper applied HEAVILY to the steak. The sauce did not taste like the one my wife had tried in France. Everything else - outstanding.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMOne of my favorites in PhillyWent to Butcher and Singer for a graduation dinner. Though we had to wait a half an hour for our reservation, the hostess and then the manager kept us well informed of the reason and made up for it by offering complimentary champagne and dessert. The food was excellent (definitely the best steak in town). The ambiance and the service were great.5/11/2013 12:00:00 AMFavorite SteakhouseWe have been to B&S, and most of the other Starr restaurants; many times. It was nice that the manager acknowledged that by coming over to the table to introduce himself. At this restaurant's price point the food should be spectacular and the service should be impeccable. We were not disappointed. Our crab, oyster and salad starters were all very good and when the entrees arrived; my NY Strip, daughter's Filet and wife's Halibut were all wonderful and the shared brussels sprouts and stuffed hash browns were fantastic too. This is our favorite place for steak and may be my fovorite restaurant overall, certainly top five. It is expensive, but worth it.5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat steakhouse.A great space with some of the best food I have tasted in Philadelphia.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMRemarkable experienceIncredible steaks, friendly & attentive wait service, excellent music and ambiance. Butcher & Singer is at the top of my list of dining experiences!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMTop class service...good foodThe service was excellent and the food was really good. My Delmonico steak was excellent well done like I like my steaks and still juicy. You MUST try the stuffed hash browns, I have never had anything like that in my life ...it was really good. I made a reservation and asked for a good table because I was celebrating a birthday and I got just that! The staff was so attentive.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFabulous food & excellent service!I took several friends who were visiting me from out-of-town to Butcher & Singer on Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy when we arrived for our reservation but we were seated immediately and greeted by Brian – our server. I can’t say enough good things about Brian; he was extremely personable, knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive - anticipating our every need and want. Definitely the best service I have had in a while. Just like the service, the food exceeded our expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers, steaks, and sides. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious! (The stuffed hash-browns were amazing!) I will definitely return again and again.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMHeavenly..Really, if I had to describe the experience, it would be simply stated as "Heavenly." Starting with the the first view as you walk in, the lighting is warm and romantic with shades of red and rich wood. With the wait staff in crisp tuxedos, the patrons dressed beautifully, you instantly feel as if you were stepping back in time. Our waiter Brian was wonderful, helping us to choose our cocktails when we asked him what he recommended and even what to order as he described the menu in such a way it was hard to decide. But it didnt take much to convince me to order the Delmonico - Oscar style and the first bite made me close my eyes in bliss. Our experience was wonderful and needless to say - Delicious! I will be returning soon.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMBusiness GemThis place reminds me of the 21 Club in NYC, only with better food. I have nothing but great things to say. Amazing Oysters!5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMTasty, but.....Food was good, on the salty side. Both meat selections (Porterhouse and Pork Chop) were top quality, cooked to perfection, but I was a little disappointed that everything was very salty and had a heavy buttery taste. Our server Brian was amazing, recommended a great wine! Overall, a nice (expensive) experience.4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMOur waiter, Bill made ourOur waiter, Bill made our dining experience 1st class. His explanation of the menu was clear, his recommendations were right on target.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMAs always, outstanding foorAs always, outstanding foor and very good service. Somewhat crowded and noisy, but that's OK it 7 PM on a Friday night, it "should" be that way. A bit pricey, but again, I don't mind if I am getting value for what I am paying. And I always do at B&S. Loved it, will be back again and again. The steaks are outstanding!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful night outAmazing food & service!! After casually mentioning that we were there celebrating a birthday, our server brought out our dessert with "Happy Birthday" written on the plate & a lit candle. So thoughtful & unexpected. Very impressed with everything at this restaurant & would absolutely recommend.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food and service.Excellent food and service. Everyone in my party (7 of us) was very satisfied.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMRemarkable Top 5-10 ContenderB & S serves one of the best steaks in the country and has a top-shelf bar and wine list to match it. Service is superb at both bar and table. Everything served on time and never rushed. I have eaten at most of the Top 100 steakhouses in the country--B & S is Top 10--perhaps, Top 5.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful evening! Wasn'tWonderful evening! Wasn't quite prepared for the dim lighting (coming from the bright outdoors) but adjusted quickly.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AM
