  • Small tables, large plates

The food was fine: our favorites were, surprisingly, not any of the small plates, but the starter bread and the main course (a shared branzino), which was fantastic. I'd go back for those alone and skip the small ones. My major complaint (and this is not limited to Bustan, but many restaurants of its ilk) involved the timing of food brought to the table. At a small-sized table, it is very difficult to juggle two plates, two water glasses, two glasses of wine, and several so-called "small plates" (some of which were plated on quite large plates), a salad. We ate in constant fear of knocking something over, and we witnessed both tables on either side drop things (just cutlery, but still.) Bring out the salad later. It was really annoying.

The lamb tartare and grilled octupus were delicious. My husband really enjoyed the sticky pudding. When we ordered a cheese platter and they had not received their cheese delivery, the staff went out of his way to still find a way to comp us different cheeses. Very attentive! Extensive wine list.

Between the lovely garden and a menu filled with many delicious, multi-cultural, Mediterranean items, this is a great addition to the UWS. The greek salad, mazettim and so many of the small plates were fantastic.

Definitely a keeper; we will return again. Our server was delightful - not intrusive, but present whenever needed. The food was, simply put: delicious! The flat breads are divine. We ordered mushroom & ricotta and it was so good we then ordered the Margherita - also great. Could happily make a meal of those and a salad. My husband ordered a deep dish very delicious lamb pie, someone had the hummus bowl with mushrooms, someone had a salad with roasted beets ... we were four happy diners. Sad to say, the noise level is a little challenging, although the garden, in which we did not get to eat but will request next time, is quiet and lovely. Bustan is a wonderful addition to the Upper West Side dining scene!!

The food at this UWS restaurant is a cut above its neighbors. Some interesting variations on traditional themes, very good fish, bread, etc. Wait staff is overworked; it took 3 requests to get bread. The back (garden) area is delightful but eating anywhere else means screaming to be heard and ignoring the press of people around you.

The food was fresh, well prepared, and delicious. The hummus was the best I have ever eaten. The margarita flatbread, shrimp, French toast, and salad left us totally fulfilled, eagerly planning our next meal there. I would highly recommend this to anyone wishing an exceptional dining experience.

I thought the food was good not great in that I found it overall on the bland side including dessert. I was expecting more use of herbs, spices etc. The jalepeno spiced apricot marquerita was very good and the garden lovely. Service was attentive at first, and then as it got busier, less so.

At first we were seated at a small table next to the bathroom, and were moved only after I complained. Its a pet peeve of mine when restaurants don't try to give you the best option if there is one available. The glass of wine I ordered was not very good -- for some reason I expected a good selection of wines by the glass. We ordered the mediterranean dips, and the bread ran out before the dips did and we didn't get any more bread. Overall, the food was very good, but I expected the service to be better.

We have monthly dinners and have a hard time finding places that have good food and service and comfortably accommodate about six people who really like to talk. Most places are too noisy (or too expensive.) I'd been to Bustan with another group, then with some apprehension suggested it to these friends, who are ready to return next month.

I have to say in spite of what some of the reviews said we decided to give it a try and ended up dissapointed. Like some if the reviews said- the food is hit or miss. My husband and I ordered from the appetizers - a few to share and they were ok but not great. While the octopus appetizer was great- the squid one was not. Now the service... We had ordered a half bottle of wine and the sommelier or actually, I think he may have been the manager was great. He came over to see how we were enjoying it and the food. He was real attentive. Out waiter was opposite. We had to call him over after twenty minutes to let him know we were ready to order. He never checked on us. He neglected us.

what a terrific place - while the garden wsa booked, the inside space is bright and airy, so it was just s delightful. service is friendly and efficient, and gives great recommendations. fun cocktails and good wine and beer choices. food is gorgeous and delicious. bread from the oven is warm and flavorful. stand out disshes were the chopped salad, the beet salad, any of the flat brads, the soft egg burek and the silan (an ice cream sundae with halvah and puffed rice).

It's good to have a reasonably satisfactory Mediterranean restaurant in the UWS. Some mezze were better than others. The smoked eggplant was large, bland and completely lacking in flavor, but the hummus and breads were good. The Greek cheese fondue was salty and tough. I couldn't give you a fair review ad I only ordered vegetarian. I would eat here in a pinch but still trek over to Beyoglu in spite of the crowds.

We enjoyed ourselves when were taken here by another couple enough so return with friends of our own. It's a neighborhood hot spot so good to be part of the scene. The food was good but not as exceptionally fab as our first time, still better than most places...not complaining. Service was pretty good but became slower as the eve progressed and the place became jammed. Friends pushed away and said the food was good but all complained about be very full! So there! Thanks.

I love the food here but I was disappointed by the perfunctory service during my second visit. The wait staff was very attentive during our first visit but this last time it decidedly less so. Bustan's is a good addition to the neighborhood, but has several characteristics preventing a top recommendation: Noisy, to the point of having to yell to be heard 3-4 feet away across small tables, jammed next to each other. Also, inconsistent food quality: One dish was excellent, while the other was extremely poor.

The noise level was beyond belief, you couldn't even hear or talk to the person right next to you. I could have forgiven that, but the food was awful (only 1 of the 4 entrees between us was even edible). The service was not much better, a "superior" waiter who recited a list of his favorite dishes from the menu. Maybe he was instructed to do this but it was most annoying. It was a fight to get a second glass of water and the bread never appeared. All in all, a disaster. I'd never eat there again.

The diner at Bustan was above and beyond what we have expected. It was our first time and we were a group of 8 ages 17 to 84. Everyone loved the food. The humus bowls are delicious, the falafel is very well done crispy and no extra oil perfectly seasoned. The salmon was placed on sweet potatos latke with a grilled fennel on the side and was one of the best i ever had. The flat breads are on thin crust - we tried the margarita one that was delicious. Desserts were very good . my favorite one was the chocolate cake with the espresso ice cream. The silan was very good as well. excellent food. The service was attentive, efficient, accommodating and very pleasant. will definitely go again.
