The food was excellent yetThe food was excellent yet again. I've eaten here 5 times now and each time they do the same great job with the food. It's very consistent which I find to normally be a rare thing in a non-foodie town like San Diego. Maybe things are finally changing for us here. One can only hope, and Burlap is a shining example of how to do it right.
The only thing I could wish for were inside tables a bit more removed from the bar and band sound level. Sitting down, our server was very pleasant, and tentative. We arrived in the beginning of dinner so our food was cooked and served to us within a timely manner. Food was amazing. Black Cod entree was really nice and the sorbets were jummy (hint - order one raspberry and one passion coconut and eat them together!). There is covered patio outside seating and there is a Coy fish pond in the outside seating area. They have awesome decor inside and just a lively atmosphere. A great place for Happy Hour as their specialty drinks are super delicious. Their Sunday brunch is a must-try. If you actually enjoy quality food, innovative food pairings, spices, sauces and a changing menu, this is the place. The wine list is solid, in both selection and a wide price range. This last time (a Wednesday night) it was not as crowded as it had been the previous times I had been there. Granted it was Wednesday and it was for a late dinner (8:45), but the service was terribly slow. Not sure why. Once we got our server's attention, things got back on track. When we arrived, there were only a few small parties. We could not understand why it took so long. The salmon was cooked medium rare (their usual temperature), but it was not even warm. I ordered the pork tenderloins which were delicious. But, it was served rare (or medium rare). I was unaware that it would be served rare and preferred the pork to be cooked well or medium well.
