Diner Reviews
  • "It was absolutely amazing experience. Atmosphere, food, service, location - you name it."

  • "I've lived in this immediate neighborhood for years and this is the first time I've eaten in whatever restaurant has occupied this space. I went for Restaurant Week and one thing that drives me crazy is when restaurants include items on this menu but there's an upcharge - Burke & Wills do this with 1 of 3 apps, and 1 of 3 main courses. Restaurant Week is about restaurants offering a Prix Fixe menu, not demonstrating that this policy doesn't settle with them. Also, the waiter was less than helpful when recommending wine - maybe I shouldn't hold that against the restaurant."

  • "Definitely go for happy hour, delicious cocktails with oysters and bar snacks. Keep in mind that the happy hour specials do not apply in the back dining hall. The back end of the restaurant for dining is very pleasant and great for a lunch/early evening date."

  • "The service is really nice and attentive. We ordered Grilled Asparagus with poached egg, heart of palms puree, crispy onions, kaffir chili sauce was very nice and and well balanced. The Coriander Crusted Lamb Ribs was simple delicious, and the fluke ceviche was fresh and had a nice flavor. My friend and I really enjoyed the experience here and you definitely want to have desert. They are amazing :-"

  • "We liked the rebirth of what was once called the Sunburnt Calf. The restaurant essentially feels like it was re-skinned, not many major changes to food or the quality of service, but with a nice new paint job. The new decor and ambiance are more swanky, but it's not too snooty for a casual weekend brunch. The food tasted good, as it did before, though they seem to have polished it a bit, and everything was particularly sharp on our visit. We look forward to returning again. Only negative was that the music was blasting when we first arrived, though they happily adjusted it upon request. We will certainly return."

  • "The neighborhood needs this place. To all who read this review, definitely try Burke & Wills...just don't make it so popular that I won't be able to get a table."

  • "Ate at the restaurant 7/11/14. Loved the decor, we were seated comfortably, and the wait staff was attentive. I had the duck, which was delicious. My Husband had the salmon, which was better than average, although the side of leeks were a bit chewy. We both thought the wine list needed improving. There are many delicious Australian wines, yet the list is limited for "by the glass" purchases. Will return perhaps for brunch and give it another try. The owners were very cordial."

  • "I can't believe I did not know about this place. The food was outstanding and the service even better. I loved the steak tartare and the duck was excellent. I highly recommend and can't wait to go back."

  • "We were there early when it was empty. Our signature cocktails took forever, long after we got our appetizers and moments before our quickly served entrees. Our server who hovered over us when we first got in disappeared once other tables came in and one employee was on the phone right next to us for most of the meal."

  • "This is a 'foodies' restaurant with dishes that are beautifully presented. The menu is quite interesting. The grilled red snapper, served with Garbanzo puree and sun-dried tomato sauce, was wonderful. The Roo burger and steak tartar were excellent, and a nice break from the usual UWS fare. Don't skip desert! On the downside, the service was a little slow, but very solicitous and responsive. They served drinks immediately, but it took them a while to bring bread to the table and take our orders."

  • "Heard about this place online and decided to give a try with my girlfriend on date night. I read about the Roo burger and gave that a try and absolutely loved it."

  • "The restaurant was not busy on Monday night and the service we experienced was disgraceful. We waited 15 minutes for a cocktail on two occasions during the meal. The young woman who served us seemed to be inexperienced. We had to flag her down to have our wine poured. The manager seemed to be entirely disinterested that he had customers. We wrestled the staff to have bread brought to the table. The courses were staged in a way that one of our guests waited five or six minutes for his food while we waited to start until his food arrived. We had been to this restaurant on numerous occasions and enjoyed the experience. We will not return and would discourage others from eating there."

  • "Food was very good and presented well. The staff and service were excellent. My only complaint was that my order was served with brocollini and not the asparagus listed on the menu. I was told that the chef made the change a few days ago but the menu has not been updated. Not a big deal as I like brocollini, just not as much as asparagus. :-)"

  • "The food was great and the drink specials are outstanding. The main dining room has a glass ceiling so there's lots of natural light. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. CASH ONLY!"

  • "We just moved to the area and Burke & Wills was a great find. We went for Sunday Supper which is a limited prix fixe menu, but everything we had was delicious, and at $30 per person for three courses and a glass of the wine, the value of the meal was truly incredible. It's a small dining room and the ambiance is cozy and very pleasant -- the bar area in the front has a great look and feel as well. The service was a perfect balance of attentive and friendly/laid back. We wholeheartedly recommend Burke & Wills and look forward to returning both for Sunday Supper again, and also on another night to try some of the other items on their very interesting menu."

  • "Really enjoyed the food. Best Bloody Mary I have had in awhile. Would come back for brunch and especially to enjoy their happy hour during the week. Not only is the 2 for 1 a great deal but the bar is beautiful."

  • "We did not know when we made the reservation (having been to Burke & Wills a number of times for happy hour), that on Sunday evenings they have a pre-fixe menu called Sunday Supper. It was Memorial Day weekend and we had out of town guests, so we were pleased that our dinner there was so special. The food was excellent and the service even better. All in all a great experience."

  • "While I usually think of Australia as being a casual place, Burke & Wills manages to keep the unpretentiousness and combine it with excellent dishes. Beer list was a bit short, but the wine list was good, and the variety on the menu was appreciated. Definitely worth a visit."

  • "I picked Burke and Wills for dinner based on the interesting menu selections shown on Open Table. From the moment our party of 4 walked in we were taken back by the warm inviting speak easy feel of the restaurant. This was followed by great service from a highly knowledgable Aussie native server that made ordering fun and efficient. We ordered lots of share food and enjoyed everyone as we sipped perfectly prepared margaritas. After dinner we were shown an indiscreet door that led to a private upstairs bar that nailed the speak easy atmosphere. A highly skilled bartender made an assortment of drinks that truly hit the spot."

  • "I saw B/W on a new travel channel show and really wanted to check it out. Went with my fiance and her mother on Saturday night and had a really nice experience. We arrived on time for our reservations though our table was not ready for 15 minutes. The hostess was very gracious and the bar was accommodating. The service was excellent, I wish I remembered our server's name but she was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable and she really made the experience great. Awesome apps, the beef tar-tare and bass crudo were my favorites. The ladies had the lamb t-bone which they raved about while I had the kangaroo burger. It is actually kangaroo and was really interesting and delicious, especially with the tomato jam. I "

  • "I've been wanting to go to MANHATTAN CRICKET CLUB since it opened, but never seemed to find the right time or right friends to go with. We happened by one night and popped in. The place was packed. Next reservation was 3 hours away, but we were invited to sit at the bar and eat there. Which we did. My steak was perfect and the enormous fries to die for. Great cocktail menu. After dinner, we were escorted upstairs, passing through this stunningly beautiful leather door and into a room that felt right out of colonial Australia. There mixologist Jason concocted three lovely cocktails in an incredibly intimate and inviting atmosphere. That was last week. I've been back twice since. But was smart enough to use Open Table to book in advance! GO!"

  • "The restaurant/bar has a hip, young feel. Service is very attentive and the servers/hosts were all very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. The lamb chop was absolutely divine and I have no idea what they did to make the polenta taste so good. My friend had the duck and it was also very succulent. The only complaint I have is that the portion runs small even for non-American standards (my lamb portion was about the size of 3 fingers WITH the bone, the duck came with 4 pieces, each the size of a Godiva truffle). As a result, the prices may run a bit high. But the flavors are spot on."

  • "First time dining here and what a surprise to find this neighborhood gem. I had the kale salad - and it was the best rendition i have ever tasted (among many kale salads). Cod, which is often bland, was so memorable and unique -- pan seared with a delicate blend of spices and light sauce around the side of the plate (yogurt? pesto? not sure but amazing) - taste of dates too. The dining room has windows in the ceiling , like an atrium, bringing you outside within the cozy warm ambiance. Can't wait to return"
