A word from Buona Tavola - Paso Robles
For over 18 years Antonio Varia has been delighting the palates of the Central Coast with his inventive yet traditional Northern Italian cuisine. Using only the freshest local and imported ingredients, Buona Tavola offers a romantic garden setting to enjoy fine dining lunch and dinner. The esteemed Zagat Survey gave Buona Tavola the highest ratings of any restaurant in the county, calling it "Superb dining with great wine in a charming setting... one of the best between Los Angeles and San Francisco." The loyal staff at Buona Tavola still consists of more than a handful of the original opening crew, and as you walk through the front door you truly become a part of the family. The skill that comes with hard-won years of experience and the area's freshest seasonal ingredients are apparent in every dish served. Plus the main ingredient comes from Antonio himself: "I cook with love!"Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Nothing like eating out and cleaning your plate. From the tapanade to the main course I truly enjoyed my supper. I had the special salmon and my husband ordered the fettuchini veal, duck, beef noodles, he said it was the best Italian he's ever had. Dessert came w/ pistachio sorbet w/ basil syrup. A must try! Really enjoyed our dinner and next time we are in town we will be back."

  • "Pasta was terrible. First pasta we ordered was swimming in sauce. Sent it back. Second one we tried was better, but nothing to rave about. We were very disappointed since we went there especially for a bowl of pasta. However, the salad was good."

  • "I have been eating at this restaurant since it opened. I can always count on a wonderful eating experience. The attitude is casually sophisticated, but not snooty. Feel free to relax here after a day in the vineyards or for any special occasion. They will never disappoint."

  • "Hubby and I were driving through to Santa Barbara. It was late Buona Tavola was open until 10AM. We stopped and had a wonderful meal with great service. Hubby had the wild salmon and I had homemade ravioli. Both were extraordinarily delicious."

  • "The food was good Italian but nothing that caused us to rate the restaurant beyond average. The dining room is narrow and the tables along the side are very close together, making the dining experience less intimate and romantic. Both my wife and I had pasta dishes that were good but the ambience of the restaurant and the noise level (the restaurant was full) impacted our enjoyment. We preferred The experience at Il Cortile, were we had dined earlier in the week (and received exceptional service and food/wine pairing recommendations from Vanessa, our server)."

  • "Eat here at least once per visit to Paso Robles and always terrific, food is excellent, choices great, always check out the specials and a nice wine list and cozy place on the main drag in downtown Paso."

  • "We enjoyed our food very much. Split a green salad with walnuts, prosciutto & shaved Parmesan that was unusual & delicious, & individual portions very generous. Both of us had pasta dishes well sauced (not drowning in it). Wine list had plenty of excellent choices, including half bottles, a Seghesio zin half bottle was perfect. If the close tables & noise level acceptable for you, an excellent choice for great food, wine & full bar."

  • "Remarkably, the dining scene in Paso Robles has matured from cowboy steak houses and bars to sophisticated eateries like Buona Tavola. Excellent food, supported with one of the best wait staffs we can remember, Buona Tavola should be on everyones list during a visit to the up and coming wine district. The staffs attention to detail, courtesy, and knowledge of the menu made our dining experience one to remember. It may be located in tiny Paso Robles, but Buona Tavola would give any of the best in Napa a run for their money. "

  • "Reliably excellent. And you can hear your dining companion, a welcome relief from the current fashion of too-noisy restaurants."

  • "Found this spot via a search of places in Pasa Robles and was more than surprised. Not the usual Italian spot but really on the best of the higher end meals. Totally pleasant surprise. Great service and food and a find and a half. If I lived here I would be here lots."

  • "We stayed at the Paso Robles Inn and walked across the street to this wonderful restaurant. The food was fantastic and after a day of driving it was so nice to find a quiet place that took good care of us."

  • "We went to your restaurant to try the food to see if you might cater a wedding rehearsal dinner on September 26, 2014 at Hammersky Vineyards. If you would be interested in doing this please contact us. The menu would be Spaghetti, Sausage, meatballs with a marinara sauce, eggplant parmesan, garlic bread, green salad & anti pasta salad, bruschetta and a desert. Cathy & Frank Giordano 661-297-3467"

  • "Buona Tavola was great about accommodating our group of 5 which turned into 7 during the salad course. The meals were excellent."

  • "This was our first time to eat here, all tho we have been coming to Paso for over 25 years. Don't know how this happened! Anyway, Buona Tavola is a top restaurant and I hate to recommend it as it will just continue to get busier and busier. Service was perfect and everything we ordered was wonderful. We ordered the special salad of the evening which consisted of grapefruit segments, kalmata olives, sun dried tomatoes, parmesan cheese with greens. My husband had tortellini stuffed with veal and mushrooms. He said it was the best tortellini he had ever had anywhere. I had salmon which was equally wonderful. They are happy to substitute veggies for starch if you do not want the starch. Enjoy...it is wonderful."

  • "We liked Buona Tavola so well, we ate there twice in three nights on our recent trip. The only downside was table noise coming from a nearby table with a group of 6 or 8 people. Think they had a little too much wine."

  • "We've now been to both Buona Tavola locations .. and neither disappoint. Paso is a much smaller venue but no less effective however the lack of a great back patio like SLO offers was missed especially with the warm Paso nights. Food was excellent as always and the service was the highlight.. friendly, fast and well annunciated! Our only complaint was a $2.75 split charge when we ordered a prawn & scallop salad and mentioned we were going to share it and it was brought on 2 plates with the unmentioned charge attached to our bill. Would have been nice to have been asked if we preferred (as we commonly share off of one plate) or warned of the heavy extra on an already pricey $15.50 appetizer. other than that Buon appetito ~ molto bene!"

  • "Four of us had a great dinner. Food was the highlight. We each loved our entree. Appetizer was also very good. Service a bit uneven (our server spent an inordinate amount of time chatting up a few tables.) Wine list featured a number of Central Coast wineries, which we liked, as that was our reason for being in Paso. Surprisingly good, we'll go back."

  • "We are locals and visit this restaurant fairly often. The food and service are generally very good. Only problem is the place is noisy, so it can be hard to have a conversation at a normal voice level. So I'd say it's a place to visit when you're in the mood for a livelier atmosphere, but not so great for a business dinner or a date night where you're looking for quiet conversation."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "The acoustics in the restaurant are not great. I found it difficult at times to hear the waiter explain the specials and I found it difficult to hear my spouse sitting across from me. The food was exceptional!"
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "Had to wait 15 minutes to be waited on. 15 minutes to order food after being served a beverage would be acceptable, but we waited 15 minutes to have a waiter first ask us what we wanted to drink. Food was very good."

  • "Extra busy the night before Valentine's. Service was slow and we thought we were forgotten for a while; waiter appropriately apologized, but attitude was overly friendly and somewhat patronizing. Food was good, as usual. Wine was unexceptional, especially for the price (white not fully chilled)."

  • "The experience was good but not as good as the previous two visits. The room was really noisy but the food was GREAT. The food price was fair. The service was a little slow and getting a waiter was a challenge a couple times. The dining area is long and skinny, so most of the "tables for two" leave one person with their back to rest of the room. The noise was so high we couldn't have a conversation during dinner so I sat staring at the wall most of the evening. I suggest you take your own bottle of wine. The wine list has several Italian wines but many are unknown and priced higher than they should be based on the quality. If the night temps are slightly chilly, don't sit near the door, It always breezy. Go for the food.......nothing else."

  • "Like their sister restaurant in San Luis Obispo, the food and service was outstanding"

  • "The pasta was some of the best outside Italy. One glitch was that we were never served the bruschetta we ordered. Restaurants are hard enough businesses as it is without missing out on revenue like that."

  • "The food was nothing special.Pasta good but sauce much too rich. Halibut mushy and dry, spinach stringy ."

  • "This is the seventh year that my husband and I have been going to Paso Robles. Buona Tavola is one of the best restaurants in the area! We always dine here, and have always had a wonderful meal and a great overall experience."

  • "We met friends in Paso for wine tasting & found this venue on line. Two of us had delicious veal while the other two in our party had salmon & shellfish. All were excellent. Or waiter, Ryan was fun & knowledgeable !! What a great place!! We will eat there every time we are on the central coast!!"

  • "We have eaten here several times and always experienced excellent food with great service. We will be back in the near future. However, I was hopping to purchase your salami but was told I could purchase it at the farmers market in Templeton and I will. Thank you for a fine evening as we were celebrating our 57th anniversary and enjoyed every minute."

  • "We really enjoyed the food in particular Buono Tavolo. We each had pasta - one a papperdelle plate, the other house-made ravioli. Both were excellent. The ravioli in particular stood out as the pasta was delicate, allowing the lamb inside to stand out. To often I find ravioli is too thick, hiding the goodness inside. In a word the food was awesome. Half price wine night on Wednesday always puts me in a good mood too!"

  • "A real gem in Paso Robles (and San Luis Obispo). You won't find your typical Lasagna and Fettuccine Alfredo on this Northern Italian restaurant's menu. Instead you'll be treated to regional Italian like you've likely never had."

  • "Exceptional bar service, attentive staff casual and pleasant atmosphere."

  • "Fairly standard italian food offerings but very good. The pasta and everything are hand made locally and it shows. I was there at 7PM on a weekend and it was quite crowded and fairly loud, but the experience was still good and the service was very professional."
