Diner Reviews
  • "The bread, salad, and entree are just ordinary, very ordinary. However, the desserts are very tasty."

  • "I tried this place as it was the only spot around that was open late. The food was, admittedly, pretty good but overpriced for sure."

  • "Went there before the Paul McCarthney concert at the Stick. The place was jumping with other concert and the staff was excellant. Knowing the majority of the diners were heading to the concert, the waiters were trying their best to get dishs out quickly. My girlfriend had the Gnocchi al Pesto and called them "tiny pillows of love". They were great! The Tortellini Buon Gusto was excellent too. A place to visit again!"

  • "Good food in a pleasant place in downtown South San Francisco. The owner is nice. Prices are reasonable, except I found the cocktails and wine to be on the high side."

  • "We were the first people to enter the restaurant so we received attentive service even after the restaurant filled up. All three of us had some form of veal which was cooked perfectly. The polenta and the vegatables which came with the veal were average. Larry was an excellent waiter as he realized all three of us were celebrating our birthdays and we received individual desserts which were outstanding! Especially loved the cannolli and the cheesecake. We will recommend the restaurant to our friends. Ask for Larry!!"

  • "Great neighborhood Italian restaurant! Easy parking next door. The food was very good and the menu has all the Italian favorites from meatballs and spaghetti to veal saltimbocca! I had a very good Cioppino although it wasn't quite as brothy as what I have had in other places. Lots of seafood though! Excellent SF style crusty sour dough bread. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for excellent food and service in a semi casual atmosphere!"

  • "Food, service and setting makes visiting this restaurant for our special occasions a regular. The prices are very reasonable, the food well prepared and servied, and the owner is almost always on hand to great both new comers and regulars. I recommend the fillet of sole as one of my favorite dishes there."

  • "I have not been there for many years. I had petrale sole it was perfect . 3 people had pasta, 1 veal scalapini. Nothing was left on their plates. Pasta was al dente! Great place for solid home style Italian food."

  • "A true gem. Excellent food, fantastic service and a warm homey atmosphere. Love the Italian music, yeh Frank Sinatra! Parking is really easy too."

  • "When we arrived we had to park in a lot next to the restaurant that was metered. I had no change for the meters so I went into the restaurant to get some. The owner just dug some change out of his pocket and gave it to me and paid for my parking. My wife and I were seated at a nice table and the service was immediate. Our waiter was very attentive and made good solid recommendations. We ordered a bottle of Italian wine, a Borolo and ordered an appetizer, Carpaccio. Very nice. My wife ordered a fish special and I ordered Veal. Neither had to be seasoned as they were seasoned perfectly. We closed down the evening with a chocolate marscaponni amaretto dessert. Very tasty. A very nice dinning experience."

  • "Lovely Italian. The owners greet you with a smile and make you feel a part of the familia. Waiters have a nice sense of humor and patience and the food is delicious. Lovely decor with linen and fresh flowers on tables. Noise level is quiet compared to most. Very clean and comfortable. I can't say enough compliments. It is a "gem" of an Italian restaurant."

  • "Had never heard of Buon Gusto but wanted Italian dinner for my son who was visiting. Found Buon Gusto on web and decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise. Wonderful food and attentive service in a charming dinning space. Probably the best Italian meal I have had in years. Will definitely return. In fact am planning to bring a friend who is celebrating his 84th birthday in a couple of weeks for Lunch. A awesome dinning experience."

  • "Since I try to limit my calories for lunch, the meal was only petrale sole and a salad. But it was spectacular petrale sole. Have put together a small group for dinner this week and will be trying more of the menu. If the other dishes measure up to the petrale sole, this place is a real winner. Will let you know."

  • "We been coming here for the past 25 years +, since Buon Gustos opened their doors. This place is amazing yet somehow continues to get better each time. Loyal staff have been there for so long and it shows in how they take care of their customers; you're family. Food is delish and decor is inspiring. Great place to dine alone, with someone special or with a large group."

  • "I always stop by when I'm in town. Food is great - reasonably priced with wonderful service. The place is packed for lunch and dinner. I suspect this is a popular destination for folks headed to the airport (or even those arriving in town). Try the fried calamari, gnocchi and meatballs.....mmmm!"

  • "This was our first time at Buon Gusto. It was close to SFO, and upon return from Ireland, we made a reservation upon reentry. The place was jammin' and there were only two tables available when we arrived; the head waiter appeared to have no clue we had a reservation through Open Table, so we were fortunate to get seated. Service was attentive, several guys bringing bread, water, the wine, etc. Our waiter was friendly -- on th edge, frankly. And he was in a hurry to go somewhere else toward the end of our meal, reached over me for the bottle, pouring the last of the wine -- still some left in the bottle! -- and charged $40, instead of the $34 we discussed beforehand. These "details" detracted from othewise good food and atmosphere."

  • "We found this restaurant while on vacation last year and we had to go back. The best Alfredo I've ever had!!! We brought the kids this year. They brought the kids dishes out immediately which was great, but the adult plates seemed to take forever. Yes the service was a bit slow. One of the owners came to our table several times and did magic tricks for the kids. It was fun!!"

  • "Always enjoy this small Italian restaurant gem in South San Francisco. Love the veal marsala. Trade out the polenta for a side of bolognese pasta. Don't be afraid to stray from you usual wine selections. We had a wonderful 2009 bottle of Amarone."

  • "Our family decided to try this restaurant as recommended by the hotel we were staying at nearby. It was an excellent choice. We will return the next time we are in the area."

  • "We both had a veal dish and it was the most tender veal we've had in a long time. Good service. Staff really made you feel welcome."

  • "We tried Buon Gusto for the first time. The host greeted us and sat us right away. The waiter was friendly and had an Italian vibe going which fit the restaurant. We ordered two glasses of wine. I got the incorrect type of wine but it was still good. We ordered our main dishes and salads. My wife got the wrong dressing but still liked the salad. The waiter was really nice to bring over a complementary small pasta for my baby. She liked it but had the runs later that night. We liked the place overall and thought the food was good. "

  • "We were on vacation and had a fantastic dinner at Buon Gusto. The pasta, bread and salads were amazing. My 10 year old ordered a steak. I was a bit nervous as I did not think that would be their specialty. It was one of the best steaks I have ever had. Definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in South San Francisco! "

  • "Our family has been dining at Buon Gusto for many many years and find it to be the best Italian food in the area. The selections are diverse and delicious, the wait staff are friendly and courteous and Vincenzo (one of the owners) is a great entertainer with his card and dice tricks. He makes everyone feel welcome and at home. I would recommend this wonderful restaurant to anyone who loves Italian food! "

  • "I had the most incredible pappardelle pasta with salmon and Gorgonzola cream sauce for lunch. I boxed a bit so I could enjoy it for dinner and all I can say is ... More, please. Great service and very easy parking. A true gem of a spot. "

  • "I took my mom to Buon Gusto on Mother's Day. She ordered a fish dish but she said it was too salty. All the rest of the food was very good. The octopus appetizer and fried calamari were very good. The service lagged quite a bit. We had to flag down the owner of the restaurant several times to bring items we had ordered but never received. The owner (not sure what his name is) is very friendly and sweet, and took care of our every need. It was just the waiter that was a dud."
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "The food was not as great as I remembered and the price for pasta with no protein ($17) is priced too high! "
    Dined on 5/10/2014
  • "This has always been a favorable restaurant. Soup was col, salad not up to par. Filet mignonette chewy. Too bad. Maybe because it was Mother's Day. "

  • "This was recommended by a work colleague. We were looking forward to some good Italian food, having returned from Italy two weeks earlier. The waiters were friendly but the food drab and overpriced. Will not be returning "
