Diner Reviews
  • "The food was amazing and prepared as ordered. The ambiance was quiet and romantic. I love the couch as a seat to the table very relaxing and cozy. "

  • "We had theater tickets at 8 and did not arrive at the restaurant until 6:30, so we had to make the dining event less leisurely than we wanted. Our waiter was very accommodating and got everything to us on time, including the check. The steaks were outstanding! We can't wait to go back a have a more relaxing dinner."

  • "My husband and I have dined at the Bull and Bear over the course of many, many years. We hadn't been there for several years and were very disappointed. We were there on a Saturday evening with our family of eight. The dining room was virtually empty when we arrived for our reservation at 7:30 and even the bar, which used to be a very energized place, was quiet with only a few patrons. There seemed to be more staff than customers, and yet, we still had to wait for our table to be set up. Our food was marginal, and that's being generous. The service was the worst we've had anywhere and the whole experience was very sad, considering what this once fabulous restaurant had been. Never again."

  • "So glad we found the Bull and Bear Steakhouse! We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria and could not pass up the chance to try this steakhouse. Everything from the generous shrimp cocktail, authentic Waldorf Salad (surprisingly with a hint of truffle oil) to the Veal Oscar and the Steamed Seafood Platter, was fabulous! So sorry to learn Veal Oscar will soon be removed from the menu. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and anticipated our every need. Definitely don't miss the Bull and Bear!"

  • "Visited NYC for 4 days and 3 nights with my Wife, our son and his wife and our soon to be 16 year old Granddaughter, took in several Broadway plays and many of the great places to visit in New York City, capped it off with great dinner and amazing night of wonderful ambience and great service at the Bull & Bear Steakhouse..When I come to NYC again, I will visit this restaurant for sure."

  • "My wife and I are on a short vacation and we're looking for quiet place with great food to enjoy our time together. This place was awesome. The staff was exceptional, the food was perfect and it was quiet. Have to try the side of lobster Mac and Cheese"

  • "My $50 rare-to-medium rare steak was medium-to-medium well at best. Disappointing."

  • "Great potential. Food was good but let down by my steak which apart from being tiny was somewhat tough and not cooked as ordered. Service very ordinary and some of the male waiters should probably should have retired many years ago. Thank goodness for the young manageress who stood out and saved the night."

  • "We had a group of 9 attending the theater and the Bull and Bear had all in order! Some got their reasonable Pre Theater Price Fixe and some split or simply ordered from menu. The waiter was good about our dividing into couples for payment and accommodated all of our requests. The food and service was excellent not to mention the lovely, famous Bull and Bear! We stepped out the restaurant's revolving doors and hailed a taxi in seconds to arrive comfortably for our show. Great experience!"

  • "Expected more tender, hotter meat cuts. Quite overpriced. Could do a wonderful job, tone down the prices a bit, and come off more gloriously."

  • "This place is like out of Mad Men. An old fashioned menu, quiet and dark with great ambiance. And the food is pretty good. The steak was wonderful. But it is TOTALLY overpriced. Our water glasses were not even refilled, much less our wine glasses. The waiter came over once. And the manager and maitre d' barely paid us a glance. Completely ruined what should have been a fun splurge at $250 for 2."

  • "The food is impeccable as you would expect. Everything is equal or better than you expect even with it being the Waldorf. Worthy bucket list item for all."

  • "We are locals who are spoiled for choice. We had guests in town and thought it would be a nostalgic experience for our friends. I have to say while our food was good, we were utterly let down by the level of service. Our server was abrupt and not very attentive, we had to flag her down for almost everything. I understand that it is more a more relaxed service, if you are looking for a Per Se, Eleven Madison Park or Jean George experience, do not look for it here. I do have to say that our sommelier was fantastic and the recommendations she made were an excellent accompaniment to our meal."

  • "My wife and I both had steak. It was the best tasting steak we have ever eaten. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere was quiet and the cost was reasonable. We are definitely going to return."

  • "For many reasons, dinner at Bull and Bear was ideal for us. First, I was entertaining out of town friends and the overall history and ambiance of the Waldorf Astoria made it feel definitively New York. The dining room is beautiful. Our waiter (Ahmed I think, from Bangladesh) was a wizened, career waiter who was charming and efficient. He gave some great recommendations that we tried and enjoyed. The food was delicious. Second, the location was ideal because we had tickets to Steve Cohen's Chamber Magic which takes place in the Waldorf Towers. That meant that we could take our time and know that we were steps away from the show. Third, our old fashioneds were delicious and the best of the weekend. Kudos to the chef, bartender, and waiter."

  • "Server pushed me to order a more expensive entree when I ordered. Maybe that works with tourists but not with New Yorkers. Total turn off. Service was slow...maybe because I did not order the most expensive entree on the menu. Why isn't there a "too loud" selection for noise level? Kids screaming, bar out of control. It was "loud" not "energized." Will not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Ate at the Bull & Bear whilst staying at Waldorf Astoria, cocktails in the bar started the evening: we received excellent attentive service and then moved into restaurant for dinner and had fabulous steaks. Couldn't fault service or food - well done Bull & Bear, can't wait to return"

  • "We had a $99 Gilt City voucher for 2 and used it on a Sunday night for dinner. Drinks were not included in the voucher. however all food was included. Where they get you was drinks. Cocktails ranged from $20 and up, and wine could be $$$ by the glass. Bill: our drinks added another $128, plus tip (on entire check value above & beyond the voucher price). So what looked like a deal, was not. Most of our meal was enjoyable. However, the 30 ounce T-bone steak I ordered was about 30% fat and was clearly not 30 ounces, and was probably about 18 ounces. Having eaten at some of the top steakhouses in NYC this place does not come close to the caliber of my other dining experiences. I wouldn't recommend if looking for an excellent steak."

  • "From the moment we were greeted at the door to the moment we finished dessert the evening was flawless. The care and attention provided to us by all staff, and in particular our waiter Boris, was perfection personified. We felt very welcomed and looked after without being bothered every 10 minutes. The décor is classic and gives an atmosphere perfect for an intimate romantic dinner. The food was impeccable with very generous portion sizes; wonderful cocktails, extensive wine list and Boris was very knowledgeable and happy to offer recommendations and pairings for certain dishes. Overall a magical experience, perfect for celebrating our 10th Wedding Anniversary."

  • "The title says it all. Arrived at the desk/reception area that was difficult to assess whether to approach it or not and was not greeted. Ordered a vodka martini with a blue cheese stuffed olive and it was an oily mess. Service was slow and not friendly. I felt as though the staff had better things to be doing. Menu lacked interest. It was a huge disappointment. Will not be returning or recommending. Positive remark, bar area looked interesting and historical. Although I would like to make excuses for them because it was XMAS day, I cannot."

  • "When we first arrived we were seated at a wobbly table! We ordered a side of broccoli and it had apparently been soaked in some sort of garlic sauce, it was awful. The steaks were excellent and the wine was very good but you would expect that for the price. Our waiter was not one to refill wine glasses which is okay with me but at high end restaurants you generally expect more attentive service. It will be along time before we go back, if ever. To be fair, I mentioned to the waiter that we were celebrating my son's birthday and he brought a complimentary glass of champagne to the table which was nice and unexpected. The cost per person came to about $115. I left thinking the overall experience wasn't worth the price."

  • "Went there for a Valentine's Day and while somewhat busy, the restaurant was not overwhelmed but the service was extremely slow. Took like 20 minutes to get after dinner coffee after we ordered, and we lost sighting of our waiter for long stretches."

  • "I travel all over the world for business and since I'm a native New Yorker I just had to try the whole Waldorf Experience. I had an amazing meal and the service was spectacular. I never had a desert that was just so well balanced (apple crisp with bacon ice cream). I highly recommend the Bull & Bear Steakhouse. You must try this experience at least once in your life."

  • "We had reservations at 5pm in order to make a 7pm show. We selected from the pre theater menu. My husband and I both ordered the lobster bisque which was absolutely wonderful. For my entree I had the salmon and my husband had the beef. Both were served with mashed potatoes and broccoli. For dessert we both selected the red velvet cake. Everything was cooked to perfection, very tasty, and beautifully presented. It definitely was a most memorable meal...especially for $55 each. This has to be one of the best values in Manhattan. Also, our waiter was very attentive and made sure that we were served in a timely manner so as to be able to get to the show on time."

  • "A fantastic venue. The place is steeped in history, the bar area full of life and great for people watching. The choice of steak and accompaniments together with the choice of wines was very good. The service was excellent ant very attentive, the staff always in presence but not pushy or overbearing. I had the Porterhouse Steak which was coked to perfection, medium for me, my wife had the Fillet, also done as requested. Overall and awesome dining experience for me and my wife and I would recommend to others, even just a cocktail in the bar is worth a visit."

  • "We waited for 20 minutes even with a reservation. We sat at the bar, which wasn't busy, and were ignored for 20 minutes by the bartender. The staff was not welcoming or friendly. The waiter was not attentive at all. We had a difficult time getting just our water glasses refilled. The substandard service ruined the entire experience."

  • "I have eaten in previous years in B and B, and loved it. Recently (last week, in Jan 2014) there were far too few waitpeople, and thus long waits between courses, plus harassed service and mix-ups with requests. This was not the waiters' fault and they were polite-- but has this restaurant changed hands, or else, are they economizing so much in running it that they will spoil their reputation?"
