A word from buku: Global Street Food
Located at the corner of Wilmington and Davie Streets in the heart of downtown Raleigh, bu•ku is a local restaurant that tells a global story. The name "bu•ku" itself is an international slang twist on the phrase, "Merci, beaucoup" meaning, "Thank you very much." Inspired by the pushcarts of street vendors across the globe, our chefs harvest an array of unique and distinct flavors and present them authentically, in a virtual kaleidoscope of plates. The common link: these are foods that people love. Working within different regional traditions, our menu brings together complex and flavorful dishes that have been honed over generations. Foods like Polish pierogis, Colombian arepas, and Thai barbecue prawns served in a banana leaf with green papaya salad can be found on the street corners of Warsaw, Bogota, and Bangkok. We strive to convey the immediate thrill a traveler feels eating foods like these as they first cross over the cart and exchange hands into the urban setting. Continued

  • "I love this place. The menu and food is awesome!! The staff is always accommodating. This is the second year I celebrated my bday with BuKu and I will do it again and again. BUKU Rocks!!!"

  • "A fun mix of small plates, a couple of great asian salads, respectable sushi rolls and some interestimg entrees. The filipino dessert was a fantastic end to our meal."

  • "So many delicious dishes so would be great to go with a few people that are ready to share off their plate! After several appetizers and delicious main course we were stuffed but every bite was unbelievable."

  • "We went there last thursday. We ate outdoor. Not a good idea!!!!!!! We were annoyed by so much flies!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The food was good but expensive!!! 2 veggies small plates, 2 larges plates, for me it was a pad thai with chicken and for my husband it was Hanoi style red snapper and a bottle of red wine and it was $160.00 !!! The food is good but it's not outstanding!! For lunch, maybe, it's more affordable!"

  • "It's been a long time since I have experienced such a lovely evening at a restaurant. Went on Sunday night, and spent 3 hours having cocktails, wine, and fantastic food. Wish I lived in Raleigh so that I could return on a regular basis. Fabulous :)"

  • "I have heard such wonderful reviews about the brunch at Buku. We have been previously for lunch and enjoyed it so figured brunch would be worth a try. We went this past Sunday and it was so incredibly disappointing. Aside from the waffles (which were pretty good) the food was not good at all. The items in the chafing dishes were dried out and not fresh. There was a nice variety of food but that did not compensate for the quality which was sub-par. Definitely not worth $20 per person."

  • "Had a great experience. Emily is a fantastic server and knows the menu, and what drinks pair well with the menu. She made the birthday dinner an amzaing and memorable one! :)"

  • "Great restaurant when you want to try a little of everything. Vietnamese crepe & empanadas picantes were very good. Loved the chocolate creme brûlée and red hat mojito."
    Dined on 6/21/2014
  • "Had lunch there the other day and we found that the food was only fair. The Thai soup was mediocre and the Thai salad was rediculously overpriced. My sushi rolls were tastless and the skin tough. On the other hand others in the group found their dishes very good."

  • "We really enjoyed brunch for our Father's Day celebration!!"

  • "Did not expect our meal to be perfect. I was a little dissapointed at first when I found out only brunch buffet was served last Sunday but there was a wide selection of food, all very tasty. Will be coming back soon!"

  • "We went to buku for an early Father's Day celebration! The food was wonderful- we shared a lot of small plates and were impressed by all of them. The flavors were great and the presentation was thoughtful. Our server did a great job- we ordered a lot of stuff all at once and he put together some great courses that made sense with everything we threw at him. We also enjoyed their fantastic wine selection! Can't wait to be back!"

  • "We would go back every time we are in town. Our group ordered almost one of everything and shared. Every coarse was an adventure. The presentation and taste were wonderful from dumplings to arepas. Service was the best, attentive but not rush us. We will look forward to visit again."

  • "Really tasty food with pretty presentation; unique flavor combinations. Really cool bar decor. Very friendly and attentive service. Convenient valet."

  • "My date and I felt that the caliber of food did not match the price; it was too expensive for what it was. The portions were appropriate..the pad thai really just tasted like aoy sauce. I would reccomend buku for drinks and appetizers but not dinner."

  • "The menu was wide ranging, food presentation was exquisite and service exemplary. "

  • "This spot is within walking distance to concerts, held at performance center. It's great during Food Week too, when it's possible to try foods from all over the world. Some of the desserts are delicious unusual combinations not found in other restaurants."

  • "Came for Triangle Restaurant Week. Due to a misunderstanding, we were planning on the Chef's Table which wasn't being offered. Sean Degnan made it happen anyway. He found the previous menu, had it recreated in the kitchen, made the wine pairings, & personally served us. Above & beyond doesn't begin to cover it. Oh, and by the way, the food was superb. Not our first time here. We've never had less than a stellar experience."

  • "We enjoyed our dinner at Buku. The dishes were interesting and fun to order. We ate slowly, ordering new items as we finished the previous. It's a good restaurant if you are looking to try something new. The dishes themselves are not the best food I've ever had, but the experience is enjoyable. "

  • "Lots (almost too many) of international influences. Most taste authentic. Great venue-- busy bar, room for large groups and a quiet dining area. "

  • "My husband & I dined at the bar, which is our preferred location. The bar here has a beautiful water feature & the atmosphere is very inviting. This was our second visit & most likely our last. We shared the vegetable dumplings which were very good. My husband had the Indian Tandoori-style chicken & cleaned his plate. I had the Moroccan Sea Scallops. The scallops themselves were melt in your mouth delicious. Unfortunately there were only 3 of them, which seemed small for an entree portion. The cous cous salad beneath, was interesting and unusual but, in my opinion, the flavors did not meld & I left most of it behind on my dish. I think this restaurant has good food & a great atmosphere, I am just not sure it's worth what they are charging. "

  • "We have been on a food tour of Raleigh since relocating from Chicago this winter. I had heard great things about buku from friends who know I have an affection for ethnic foods- I was not disappointed at all!! My husband and I had an appetizer and 4 small plates to share so we could sample the menu, left full and happy! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "buku is an excellent place to turn a mundane Monday into a melodramatic one. The food is on par with world class chefs, the ambience is perfect whether sitting outside and getting some night air or dining in one of the over-sized booths on the inside, and the cocktails are panty droppers! The bill will edge on the pricey side if you want to fill up but it's a good place to feel special for a night."

  • "Victoria was a wonderful server... She was on top of things without "smothering" us. She was very helpful in explaining everything about the restaurant - and even gave us a guided tour and description of foods on the buffet. (Both of us were new to the place.) The only thing that could have improved the dining experience would be improved acoustics. Baffle the noise a bit... it was not especially loud, just clanging/echoing - hampering quite conversation - especially when a dialect was involved."

  • "This is my favorite place to eat before going to the theater in downtown Raleigh . Valet parking is great. I,love their selection of small,plates--my favorite is the Vietnamese crepe with an Asian pear salad. Their tiramisu is to die for! "

  • "The food was good. Not excellent, but good. We enjoyed the outside seating area that was nicely shaded with a nice breeze blowing through; a blessing on a hot day. The bar produced some expertly crafted drinks. The waitress was fair, but that was just the (un)luck of the draw as the table next to us had a more attentive one."

  • "Mothers day brunch was fantastic. Great variety with everything from Omelets to roast beef and Asian dumplings."
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "Every dish on the brunch menu may seem authentic, however the rice and Masalam curry needs more work. I should have stuck to the waffles and eggs instead of trying the global cuisine. "

  • "One of the best restaurants in the Triangle: outstanding food and presentation, superb service, convenient location near performance halls, ideal for pre-concert or pre theater dinners! Unusual dishes, but tasting great. Altogether our dinner was a wonderful experience! "

  • "Celebrated my daughter's graduation with 9 family members. The entire experience was delightful! The menu had a nice variety of choices. We tried several different small plates and entrees. Everything was excellent. The service was impeccable. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and had such a great personality. He handled a few of our picky diners with complete respect and patience. He made the evening enjoyable. Overall the entire experience from drinks to dessert was amazing!! I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a very enjoyable evening out."

  • "We ate at BuKu prior to going to the Symphony and as always, the selection of food was very good. We shared several small plates which was perfect, so that we could try a variety of dishes. The service was superb, and timing was good....not to rushed, but did not have to wait too long for the next courses. Highly recommended."
