A word from buku: Global Street Food
Located at the corner of Wilmington and Davie Streets in the heart of downtown Raleigh, bu•ku is a local restaurant that tells a global story. The name "bu•ku" itself is an international slang twist on the phrase, "Merci, beaucoup" meaning, "Thank you very much." Inspired by the pushcarts of street vendors across the globe, our chefs harvest an array of unique and distinct flavors and present them authentically, in a virtual kaleidoscope of plates. The common link: these are foods that people love. Working within different regional traditions, our menu brings together complex and flavorful dishes that have been honed over generations. Foods like Polish pierogis, Colombian arepas, and Thai barbecue prawns served in a banana leaf with green papaya salad can be found on the street corners of Warsaw, Bogota, and Bangkok. We strive to convey the immediate thrill a traveler feels eating foods like these as they first cross over the cart and exchange hands into the urban setting. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Had a wonderful meal with good friends. The food was eclectic and yummy. Our friend said it was out of his comfort zone and ate every last crumb. The ambience was perfect.. A great evening for all"

  • "This is the second time we have been to BuKu and each time have experience good food, and good service. Need to be careful ordering small plates, as they add up quickly, especially if you have drinks, so is a little cost prohibitive for a casual night out, more for special occasions."

  • "It was our first time trying this restaurant with another couple. We had heard good things about it from friends and radio advertisement. We enjoyed our evening out. We sat outside as the weather was very enjoyable so I cannot say how the inside of the restaurant was. Our server was friendly, energetic and informative. We tried several small plates, which were okay, and the Hot Pot Yam Talay (which was delicious), then had the Argentine Short Ribs, the special for the day Pecan Crusted Snapper and Belgian Steak Frites and they were all good. I would go again, but just stick with a large plate and their specialty drinks (yummy)."

  • "The food is over the moon great.... still dreaming about the Vietnamese Street Roll. The bar is a little slow, but Andy, the server makes up for it with awesome service."

  • "This place is better every time we go, they asked if we were celebrating and yes my birthday.....magically a cake arrived. Service wonderful, and food absolutely incredible!!!!!!"

  • "Congrats for the food, really eclectic food, we enjoyed dinner"

  • "We enjoyed the food tremendously. Pork dumplings, empanadas, and arepas were especially tasty and highly recommended. Our table was back by the kitchen which diminished the overall ambience for us but tables in the front section looked to offer a better overall feel. Place has a nice vibe with patrons of all ages. If there can be such a thing, we found the service to be a bit too attentive and a tad intrusive when our conversations were interrupted to clear individual plates as soon as they were finished. Overall we enjoyed our experience and would return for an occasional visit."

  • "Went through open table for a reservation, great starters, good drinks, and great entree. Did not try the dessert but the ones that passed us looked great. We had the lamb, did not particularly love the potato salad but the rest was good. Also the pierogies were great!"

  • "Love the concept of this restaurant and was excited to eat here based on the reviews. That said, the execution fell short of what I felt was promised. The food was okay, but not anywhere near the level of excellence needed to justify the prices. Service was disappointing. Our server came around a lot, but never seemed to really connect with us or what was going on at our table. She asked a lot of misplaced questions and didn't listen to our answers or understand what we wanted when we asked questions, which in the end resulted in us being interrupted a lot but not really being served. ADD, maybe? Who knows. Really a shame. The watermelon white wine sangria was awesome. The rest of our experience left us wanting more."

  • "A fun mix of small plates, a couple of great asian salads, respectable sushi rolls and some interestimg entrees. The filipino dessert was a fantastic end to our meal."

  • "Excellent find. Very different kinds of food - an Americanization of foods one would find in distant places, often sold by street vendors. Our server was very good and the food was fantastic. We will be going back soon."

  • "So many delicious dishes so would be great to go with a few people that are ready to share off their plate! After several appetizers and delicious main course we were stuffed but every bite was unbelievable."

  • "I love this place. The menu and food is awesome!! The staff is always accommodating. This is the second year I celebrated my bday with BuKu and I will do it again and again. BUKU Rocks!!!"

  • "We went there last thursday. We ate outdoor. Not a good idea!!!!!!! We were annoyed by so much flies!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The food was good but expensive!!! 2 veggies small plates, 2 larges plates, for me it was a pad thai with chicken and for my husband it was Hanoi style red snapper and a bottle of red wine and it was $160.00 !!! The food is good but it's not outstanding!! For lunch, maybe, it's more affordable!"

  • "It's been a long time since I have experienced such a lovely evening at a restaurant. Went on Sunday night, and spent 3 hours having cocktails, wine, and fantastic food. Wish I lived in Raleigh so that I could return on a regular basis. Fabulous :)"

  • "I have heard such wonderful reviews about the brunch at Buku. We have been previously for lunch and enjoyed it so figured brunch would be worth a try. We went this past Sunday and it was so incredibly disappointing. Aside from the waffles (which were pretty good) the food was not good at all. The items in the chafing dishes were dried out and not fresh. There was a nice variety of food but that did not compensate for the quality which was sub-par. Definitely not worth $20 per person."

  • "Great restaurant when you want to try a little of everything. Vietnamese crepe & empanadas picantes were very good. Loved the chocolate creme brûlée and red hat mojito."

  • "If your a foodie who wants professional, polite, and knowledgeable service then baku is the place for you! Stephen was my server and he knew his menu and was prompt in all aspects to service. My friend has recently relocated to Charlotte and we asked Stephen about food in the area, we were pleasantly surprised that he was a fountain of knowledge on the Charlotte foodie scene! Wonderful date place!!!"

  • "Had lunch there the other day and we found that the food was only fair. The Thai soup was mediocre and the Thai salad was rediculously overpriced. My sushi rolls were tastless and the skin tough. On the other hand others in the group found their dishes very good."

  • "Had a great experience. Emily is a fantastic server and knows the menu, and what drinks pair well with the menu. She made the birthday dinner an amzaing and memorable one! :)"

  • "Did not expect our meal to be perfect. I was a little dissapointed at first when I found out only brunch buffet was served last Sunday but there was a wide selection of food, all very tasty. Will be coming back soon!"

  • "We really enjoyed brunch for our Father's Day celebration!!"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We went to buku for an early Father's Day celebration! The food was wonderful- we shared a lot of small plates and were impressed by all of them. The flavors were great and the presentation was thoughtful. Our server did a great job- we ordered a lot of stuff all at once and he put together some great courses that made sense with everything we threw at him. We also enjoyed their fantastic wine selection! Can't wait to be back!"

  • "My date and I felt that the caliber of food did not match the price; it was too expensive for what it was. The portions were appropriate..the pad thai really just tasted like aoy sauce. I would reccomend buku for drinks and appetizers but not dinner."

  • "We would go back every time we are in town. Our group ordered almost one of everything and shared. Every coarse was an adventure. The presentation and taste were wonderful from dumplings to arepas. Service was the best, attentive but not rush us. We will look forward to visit again."

  • "Came for Triangle Restaurant Week. Due to a misunderstanding, we were planning on the Chef's Table which wasn't being offered. Sean Degnan made it happen anyway. He found the previous menu, had it recreated in the kitchen, made the wine pairings, & personally served us. Above & beyond doesn't begin to cover it. Oh, and by the way, the food was superb. Not our first time here. We've never had less than a stellar experience."

  • "Lots (almost too many) of international influences. Most taste authentic. Great venue-- busy bar, room for large groups and a quiet dining area. "

  • "My husband & I dined at the bar, which is our preferred location. The bar here has a beautiful water feature & the atmosphere is very inviting. This was our second visit & most likely our last. We shared the vegetable dumplings which were very good. My husband had the Indian Tandoori-style chicken & cleaned his plate. I had the Moroccan Sea Scallops. The scallops themselves were melt in your mouth delicious. Unfortunately there were only 3 of them, which seemed small for an entree portion. The cous cous salad beneath, was interesting and unusual but, in my opinion, the flavors did not meld & I left most of it behind on my dish. I think this restaurant has good food & a great atmosphere, I am just not sure it's worth what they are charging. "

  • "We have been on a food tour of Raleigh since relocating from Chicago this winter. I had heard great things about buku from friends who know I have an affection for ethnic foods- I was not disappointed at all!! My husband and I had an appetizer and 4 small plates to share so we could sample the menu, left full and happy! Can't wait to go back!"
