  • "We ordered a few appetizers, as there were only 5 entree items and no specials. The food was good but service was a bit slow (not very slow, and they did bring out the kid's food first and quickly). After exploring the restaurant, we found a great bar and game room upstairs, which looks like a fun hang out for groups. We'll definitely go back and have drinks and appetizers upstairs."

  • "We dined at Buffalo Nickle about 5 weeks after it opened and really enjoyed it. We at up at the bar. I wrote a wonderful review for that visit. This time we came with friends (party of 4) and ate downstairs. There were two other tables in the restaurant when we arrived - party of 2 and a party of 4. This was at 7:20pm on a Thursday. Took 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks? WTF? Food was just ok. My fish was raw in the center &the rice had way too much cumin in it. My husband's steak was ok. Hamburger was raw in center. Probably will try again because everyone has an off night, but things need to improve. There are way too many restaurants in Asheville to have many nights like this and survive in this town."

  • "West avl overflows with very good dining options, and Buffalo Nickel is a great addition to the mix. The place has a nice glow to it, with all the mismatched chandeliers and lighting fixtures and wooden tables. The waitstaff is friendly, timely, and knowledgable. This was our third or fourth visit, and my health conscious husband has ordered fish every time, which he reports is excellent. I have ordered fish, pork chops, hamburger, pierogies, terrine, and eaten many different apps with our dining parties, and it's all more than good! Vibrant flavors, colorful veggis and some unique prep. Game room upstairs is such a bonus - husband and I took in a little game of pool before heading to a concert down the street. Very enjoyable time."

  • "We had high expectations for Buffalo Nickel. We have heard a lot about chef Ryan Kline and we were excited for the opportunity to eat his food. The Perogis we're mush and had absolutely no texture, even the cabbage on top was limp, then we ordered the pork cheek app and it had no flavor and was very bland. For my entree I had the clams and they came out Luke warm with cold toast, my husband had the Ribeye for $27 and it was severely over cooked. Dessert was so tasteless that the waitress brought us something else to replace it with because the bourbon cinnamon icecream we ordered was vanilla. $200 later and we were disappointed w every dish that hit the table!"

  • "I was surprised to see a more formal dinner menu at Buffalo Nickel. The chef is clearly very talented but I think they are confused as to what kind of menu they should present. A more modest selection of sandwiches and similar options would have been appreciated and I think it would be more appealing. The ambiance is very informal but the menu did not really reflect that. That probably is why there were so few people in the restaurant at 7:30 on a summer Wednesday night. Still the food was very good and I believe people should give it try."

  • "Party of 4 had reservations at six. We were seated promptly, drinks were delivered quickly. The server was very helpful with recommendations and explanations of appetizers and entrees. Four different appetizers were delicious; three ordered the Wreck fish entree which was outstanding and the one with the pork chop was completely satisified. The pound cake/ice cream dessert was perfect. The restaurant is uniquely decorated; ambiance was perfect for our group. Highly recommend; we will return."

  • "Parking in back is for employees according to Hostess, leaving patrons to find non-existent onstreet parking. Ribeye presented well but was undercooked although tasty. The mushrooms were very good. Hobby Wreckfish presented well but the Shrimp & Andouille gumbo smeared on the plate lacked shrimp. The herb rice was very good. Apple pie with bourbon ice cream lacked bourbon and the candied bacon scattered on the plate seemed like an after thought. The cheese pie crust was soft. Everything was good, but for the price we expected the food to be great. A bit of tweaking and the food will match the price. The restaurant is very nice and we enjoyed the atmosphere."

  • " We took neighbors for a going away dinner. Restored old building, warehouse height ceiling, low noise level . Shot gun style- with kitchen visible from first floor tables. 2nd story, large bar area with pool tables, foosball and stage area ( double down stair's space). We came for the food, we were not disappointed. Chef Ryan Kline, made several off menu appetizers that were shared by all. Special of the night was Jambalaya Terrine ( cold) it was great. This was a "creative" menu - not sure I could define, all four had different main courses and all were not disappointed. We also tried several different local brews- large selection. All in all a great experience, will definitely bring others back."

  • "the food was pretty great. we shared the perogies (which were just ok in our opinion). my boyfriend ordered the chicken pot pie...it was good, but nothing really to write home about. he also ordered a side of animal fries, which he loved. they were definitely yummy. i ordered the ribeye and i really think it might have been the best darned steak i ever ate ever. we spent every bite trying to figure out just what they put in their marinade. our best guess, which we were told was kinda close, was lime, garlic, cilantro, and shallots. whatever it is, it's heavenly! try it...you must. i was also a huge fan of the wine list, which i almost just referred to as the champagne list because it has 3 great dry options for a great price!"

  • "My girlfriend and I stayed in West Asheville for a short vacation. We 'commuted' back and forth to downtown the majority of the time, but decided to give the Buffalo Nickel a try since it was about 5 minutes closer to our rental. We went on a Monday night, at 6:30, so I assume that is why the restaurant only had a few patrons. However, the food was terrific and easily compares with some of the other trendy restaurants in the downtown area. In addition it is a very attractive and well designed restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place. It provides a chance to see a different side of town and have some truly great food."

Friend's trout was also delicious and the chef's creativity did not go unnoticed! Beautiful presentation and the staff was accommodating to dietary concerns. Wine list is not elaborate but offers good options. Waiter was a bit inexperienced but worked hard."

  • "This was our first visit - certainly won't be our last. Buffalo Nickel succeeds in its stated mission to provide a warm, comfortable atmosphere where you can relax. You can also enjoy great food and service! The menu offers a lot of options both plate size (appetizers, small and full entree) and ingredients (something to please everyone from vegans - steak lovers). Despite the range the quality doesn't suffer. We all had something different and every dish was excellent! We ordered wine from the specials list - enjoyed a very lovely wine for a very modest price. The service was friendly, attentive and professional. The manager stopped by to welcome us and check in. A great spot for dinner for two or a gathering with friends and family."

  • "My husband and I had deviled eggs (far to salty) and green salad to start. For main course I had trout which was good but not a balanced plate. It came served over a plate beans (thank goodness I had some greens from another course). My husband had the spinach fettuccine and it was so bland. I gave him half my trout to make his dinner taste better but it was big disappointment. Hopefully the chef and kitchen can get these details worked out. "

  • "My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner here a few weeks back. The lower level is mainly dining (I think). We went upstairs to the bar/dining/pool hall area and ate at the bar. I anticipated "bar food". I was wrong! My husband ordered the fish of the day...wreckfish prepared simply broiled over a magnificent creamy risotto. My husband is not a risotto fan and ate every morsel! I had the beef carpaccio and it was wonderful. I definitely recommend and will be back."

  • "West Asheville is turning into Downtown 2.0 as foodie spots pop up all up and down Haywood. The Admiral set the bar high, and few have lived up to expectation. However, Buffalo Nickel has answered that call. You can get large or small plates, and my wife and I had a hard time just deciding on what to eat. I finally settled on the Apple Brandy Farms Burger, and my wife went with the WNC Trout. The burger was excellent with the cheddar whip and onion jam. I could have eaten a whole bowl of the cheddar whip. My wife loved the trout, and we both greatly enjoyed the Field Peas, Baby Limas, Confit Tomatoes. For dessert, we were really excited to try the Cheerwine Creme Brulee and Caramelized Apple Pie, and were not disappointed either."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed the Buffalo Nickel's Mother's Day Brunch. The arrival of our main course was a bit slow but the wait staff were very attentive and explained that the restaurant just recently opened and the kitchen was still working out some of the "kinks". The wait was well worth it. The portions were generous and the food well prepared. Their beer selection was quite extensive. My wife had a special Bloody Mary which she really enjoyed. The long stem red rose presented to my wife in honor of Mother's Day was a very nice touch. The restaurant is bigger than it looks from the outside. We had no issues finding parking close to the restaurant. We definitely plan on returning with friends to try their dinner menu items. "

  • "I had the soft shell crab, and my friend got the pear salad. Neither was disappointing! Finally there is a place in Asheville with good softshell crab! It was served on a leek/potato pancake which was good but a little tough. The whole thing was topped with roumelade sauce and some micro green sprouts. There were so many good choices on the menu. It's doubtful that any would disappoint!"
